Obama And Congress Give One More
Push For Immigration Reform

President Obama Nominated the Very First Native American
Woman For Federal Judge

D

iane J. Humetewa, a member of the Hopi tribe and
former U.S. attorney in
Arizona, has been nominated to
serve on the U.S. District Court for
the district of Arizona as a federal
judge. If confirmed, she would be
the first active member of a Native American reservation, and first
Native American woman to serve
as a federal judge. Not only would
this bring more diversity to the federal bench, but Arizona’s prominent Native community will finally
be represented in a state that is infamous for ignoring Native issues.

This is a big deal because she is
a Native woman from the same
Arizona that has become a police state through its insistence on
criminalizing communities of color,
deportations, and via renegade
leaders like Sheriff Arpaio. Arizona
is swiftly becoming a state known
for its extreme racial profiling regarding folks who look “brown.”
In Obama’s first term he nominated Arvo Mikkanen of the Kiowa
Tribe, but Republicans blocked the
nomination.

International Jazz Sensation “Jimena Bautista” Swings
With The United Nations Across The Border
By Nathan James

I

was singing before I started
speaking”, says Jimena Bautista, a young jazz vocalist from
Mexico who has been enthralling
international audiences with her
unique sounds and style, “when I
was 2, my family already had recordings of me. I was completely
amazed and dazzled by Michael
Jackson’s Beat It.”  With the knowledge that music was her passion,
even at that early age, Jimena’s
path was set out before her.  Born
in Mexico City and raised in Cancun, it soon became clear that
Jimena had inherited the talent
that ran in her family.  Her father,

who played with the notable
pop band Mister Loco, won accolades such as “World’s Most
Popular Song” at the Yamaha
contest in Tokyo during 1975,
for Lucky Man. Following her
education at a British private
school, where she became bilingual,  Jimena was eager to
follow in his footsteps.  “By the
time I was 13 or 14, it was a
different world for me.  When I
first heard Manhattan Transfer,
I knew I wanted to do jazz,” she
recalls.  “I was also inspired by
Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday,
Louis Armstrong and Duke
Ellington’s orchestra.  This is
how I got started in the music
industry--it was a little difficult

for me at the beginning.”
Jimena persevered, and soon
met the legendary George
Duke, who became her mentor.
“I met George Duke in 2003, at
the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival.
I was walking in the street and
recognized him, and asked him
where he was going to sing,”
Jimena says.  “He invited me
to sing with him, live, and I was
like, ‘Are you sure you want
me to sing with you tonight?”
Following that improvisational
performance, Jimena’s career
began to roll.  She performed
in such diverse locales as the
Caribbean, Canada, Mexico,
and recorded tracks at Bennett
Studios in New Jersey.  Jimena

is also a composer, and she
produces all of her own music.  “I create music in a variety of genres, a fusion of jazz,
blues, and Mexican,” Jimena
observes.
Jimena has also become involved in social causes, joining
the United Nations’ Say NO,
Unite To End Violence Against
Women in Latin America campaign.  “I was very honored to
become part of this campaign,
to send a message around the
world to stop the violence,” Jimena states.  “Violence against
women in Latin America is
a severe problem, and we
shouldn’t be afraid to say it out

Culver City Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr Day
“What did Dr. King say? And what
will we do?” is the theme for Culver City’s 9th Annual Celebration
of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. The day-long celebration
will feature a special screening of
the epic 1970 Sidney Lumet film,
“King: A Filmed Record. . . From
Montgomery to Memphis. “ The
keynote presentation will be given
by Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith of
Agape International Spiritual Center. Culver City’s MLK celebration
will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday,
January 18, at the Culver City Senior Center, 4095 Overland Avenue
in Culver City. The event is free.
Other activities during Culver City’s
King Day celebration include a
panel discussion on the impact of
Dr. King’s legacy; a dramatic rendition of Dr. King’s “I have a Dream
Speech” by Actor Gerald Rivers;
the debut of “Ways to Practice Nonviolence” public service announcement created by members of Culver
City Teen Center and edited by animator Bruce Heller; and a special
performance by singer-songwriter
Rickie Byars Beckwith, Music and
Arts Director of the Agape Interna-

tional Spiritual Center. Actress and
playwright Christina Harley and motivational speaker Wayne Slappy
will co-host the day’s activities.
The featured film “King: A Filmed
Record . . . from Montgomery to
Memphis” was originally released in
theaters as a “one-time-only” event
on March 24, 1970 and has been
rarely seen since. There was a
limited re-released in 2013 to commemorate the 50th anniversary
of the March on Washington. The
film chronicles the life and work of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from the
beginning of the Civil Rights movement in Montgomery, Alabama and
culminating with his 1968 assassination in Memphis. Nominated
for the Academy Award for Best
Documentary, the film combines
dramatic readings by Harry Belafonte and others involved in the civil
rights movement with newsreel and
archival footage to create a powerful and comprehensive record of Dr.
King’s legacy.
Keynote speaker Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith founded the Agape
International Spiritual Center in
1986 based on faith in a vision of

a trans-denominational spiritual
community. Agape reaches deep
into local and global communities teaching individuals about
the transforming, healing power
of prayer, meditation, and selfless
service. Since its inception, the
movement has expanded into a
community of 9,000 local members
and 1,000,000 friends worldwide.

During Culver City’s Martin Luther King’s Celebration, Common
Peace, a non-profit committed to
the practice of nonviolence, will debut a public service announcement
(PSA) created by members of Culver City’s Teen Center. Common
Peace teamed up with veteran filmmaker and animator, Bruce Heller
to implement an on-going animation

WEEKLY JOKE
Will you marry me?
An elderly widow and widower were dating for about five years.
The man finally decided to ask her to marry. She immediately
said “yes”.
The next morning when he awoke, he couldn’t remember what
her answer was! “Was she happy? I think so, wait, no, she looked
at me funny...”
After about an hour of trying to remember to no avail, he got on
the telephone and gave her a call. Embarrassed, he admitted that
he didn’t remember her answer to the marriage proposal.
“Oh”, she said, “I’m so glad you called. I remembered saying ‘yes’
to someone, but I couldn’t remember who it was.”

THE

Los Angeles County Sheriff, Plagued By
Scandals, Announces Retirement

“I didn’t want to have to enter a campaign that would
be full of negative, contentious politicking,” said Baca,
71, who has spent 48 years
in the Sheriff’s Department
since becoming a deputy.
Last month, federal prosecutors indicted 18 current
and former sheriff’s deputies for alleged crimes that
included beating inmates
and jail visitors, falsifying reports, and trying to obstruct
an FBI probe of the nation’s
largest jail system.
U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte
Jr. said the indictments
showed that “some members of the Sheriff’s Department considered themselves to be above the law”
and “demonstrated behavior
that had become institutionalized.”

Baca was born in East Los
Angeles. His mother was
brought illegally from Mexico when she was a child.
Later, she worked as a
seamstress.
“In those days, undocumented was different than it
is today,” Baca was quoted
as saying in an interview
with KPCC, a Southern California public radio station.
“And so it wasn’t difficult for
her to become a citizen.”
Baca recalled in the interview that his parents divorced, and that his mother
came close to putting him
up for adoption.
“She couldn’t handle three
kids at the same time, so I
was put up for foster care,”
he said, according to KPCC.

Cal State L.A. Celebrates Installation of
Celebrated Artist Rick Hohn’s Art Piece,
‘Victorious Struggle’
Cal State L.A. will celebrate the
installation of renowned artist and
writer Rick Hohn’s painting, “Victorious Struggle,” to be mounted in
the hallway outside of the University’s Charter College of Education
office (King Hall D2069). A reception will immediately follow the installation ceremony.
This eight-foot mural painting with
seven progressive scenes from
left to right depicts the struggle
that Hohn’s childhood friend, Jamie, went through to get off the
floor. Though severely paralyzed
from polio, he could walk with
braces and crutches, by raising
and swinging his legs in front of

his crutches for a step. The
painting also demonstrates
the fortitude in overcoming
insurmountable odds in
spite of Jamie’s acute paralysis.
Hohn, who was born with
cerebral palsy, has limited use of his limbs and
paints. When Hohn was
15-years-old, his mother
taped a paintbrush to his head
pointer. They discovered that although his head pointer improved
his communicative effectiveness, it
also allowed him to paint. His first
watercolor paintings were impressionistic landscapes. Today, he is

El Camino College Professor Sets Another
International Swimming Record

EYE

In a move that many around
him said they did not expect,
Los Angeles County Sheriff
Lee Baca announced on
Tuesday that he will retire at
the end of this month.
Baca, whose department
and jails have been under
fire that includes indictments of his deputies for
allegedly beating inmates
and visitors and falsifying
reports, was expected to run
for a fifth term despite all the
scandals.
The announcement came
as the Sheriff’s Department
and its jails have been under increasing scrutiny.
In an emotional statement,
Baca said the major reason for his decision was the
“negative perception” the
upcoming campaign would
have on his department.

El Camino College professor and
master swimmer Traci Granger
set yet another world record in a
regional swim meet earlier this
month. One of the fastest swimmers in the world, Granger tied the
world record in the short course
50-meter butterfly, with a time of
31.13. She also went five for five
at the meet, bringing home five
first-place medals.
The victory caps a tremendous
year for Granger, who set several
national and international speed
records this past spring and summer. This month’s victory is the third world
record for 2013. She is a 10-time national
champion and has bested many athletes in
younger age brackets, claiming these victories after taking nearly one year off from
competing due to hip surgery.
Granger set her first national record in 2008,
winning her division in the 50-yard butterfly at the United States Masters Swimming
(USMS) Short Course Championships.
Since then, she continued to win gold medals and break records, often finishing with
better times than competitors in younger age
groups. Reaching the age of 55 this year,
she moved into the 55-59 bracket.
And yet, as a lifelong competitive swimmer,
Granger does not set out to be a champion;
she just enjoys the workout and the camaraderie of swimming with a group.
“I do better in the pool when I am pushing
myself and not thinking about what is going
on in the races,” said Granger, who trains
year-round at the Torrance Plunge with
a motivated group of South Bay masters
swimmers called the Los Angeles Peninsula
Swimmers, or LAPS.
“When I won the world record, I didn’t know
how fast I was swimming but when I finished,
they announced it, and I was surprised.
When I race, I’m just trying to beat one of
the guys on the team who always challenges
me – Duncan McBride – we have an ongoing
competition between us.”
Granger took a break from competitive
swimming in 2012 when she noticed her leg
and hip were giving her some trouble. After
consulting with doctors, she was diagnosed
with a torn hip flexor and surgery was sched-

an accomplished artist, minister,
consultant and author of several
books. For more about Hohn:
http://blog.dynavoxtech.com/authors/rick-hohn/
The art piece is donated by Sherry
Best, a professor of special education, physical and health impair-

uled. The rehab required her to slow down in
everything, including walking, and definitely
no swimming for three months. She was
bored immediately.
“I couldn’t sit on the stationary bike all day – I
had to find something interesting to do,” she
said.
Granger soon met up with El Camino College exercise fitness specialist Kim Jones,
who created personalized workouts to help
with the rehab.
“Training with Kim was outstanding – she is
good for me because she asked me about
my goals and helped me become stronger.”
Granger said. “I told her that I would do anything that was going to make me stronger
in the pool, anything that would be good for
swimming. It was wonderful, with a lot of
variety; I was getting bored doing the same
thing. I needed to get my exercise, but I also
wanted it to be interesting.”
Turns out, Granger came back even faster
after surgery.
In May, Granger traveled to Indianapolis and
shook up the short course nationals, winning
five events: the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard butterfly; the 50 free; the 100 IM, and broke a
national record in the 50-yard butterfly, with
a time of 27.45. She felt tired, but did not detect post-surgery problems, so she decided
to compete on the international level and enter the long course competition, though she
has very little experience in this venue. The
long course season includes races measured in meters, versus the yards presented
at nationals. International competitors race
in metered pools, so champions in these
races are considered the fastest in the world.

“This was a new fight I could sink
my teeth into. That’s what really I

Federal officials say a children’s

the idea of incorporating wounded

where veterans account for 30
percent of the workforce, ran with
the idea.
“They built their career upon fighting for this country and keeping cit-

said. “What better to get somebody
already with that mindset into a
program where it’s another battlefield, very similar, but you’re keeping our children safe. You’re taking
predators off the street.”
The agency relied on the U.S.
Special Operations Command to
get the word out to wounded service members transitioning out of
the military or already separated.
The veterans were given about
11 weeks of intensive computer
and legal training before being assigned to an ICE field office.

Obama And Congress Give One More Push
For Immigration Reform
His agenda tattered by last
year’s confrontations and
missteps, President Barack
Obama begins 2014 clinging
to the hope of winning a lasting legislative achievement: an
overhaul of immigration laws.

THE SECRET WORLD
OF ESPIONAGE

WEST COAST PREMIERE

SUMMARY
It will require a deft and careful
use of his powers, combining
a public campaign in the face
of protests over his administration’s record number of deportations with quiet, behind-thescenes outreach to Congress,
something seen by lawmakers
and immigration advocates as
a major White House weakness.
In recent weeks, both Obama and
House Speaker John Boehner, ROhio, have sent signals that raised
expectations among overhaul supporters that 2014 could still yield
the first comprehensive change in
immigration laws in nearly three
decades. If successful, it would
fulfill an Obama promise many Latinos say is overdue.
The Senate last year passed a
bipartisan bill that was comprehensive in scope that addressed
border security, provided enforcement measures and offered a path
to citizenship for 11 million immigrants in the United States illegally. House leaders, pressed by tea
party conservatives, demanded a
more limited and piecemeal approach.

Indicating a possible opening,
Obama has stopped insisting the
House pass the Senate version.
And two days after calling Boehner to wish him happy birthday in
November, Obama made it clear
he could accept the House’s billby-bill approach, with one caveat:
In the end, “we’re going to have to
do it all.”
Boehner, for his part, in December
hired Rebecca Tallent, a former
top aide to Sen. John McCain and
most recently the director of a bipartisan think tank’s immigration
task force. Even opponents of a
broad immigration overhaul saw
Tallent’s selection as a sign legislation had suddenly become more
likely. Boehner also fed speculation he would ignore tea party

pressure, bluntly brushing back
their criticism of December’s modest budget agreement.
“The question is what are the
core things that Republicans can’t
move away from, what are the
core things that Democrats can’t
walk away from,” said Republican
pollster David Winston, who regularly consults with the House leadership. “You may have preferences
and then you may have core elements. That’s part of the process
of going back and forth.”
If successful, an immigration compromise could restore some luster
to Obama’s agenda, tarnished in
2013 by failures on gun legislation,
bipartisan pushback on his efforts
to take military action against Syria
and the disastrous enrollment start
for his health care law.

Eva Longoria - Actress, Businesswoman,
Stunner - Named ‘Maxim’s Woman Of The Year’
Eva Longoria always looks hot and
sporting only a white tank top, the
Latina bombshell sizzles as she
graces the cover “Maxim’s” January/February issue, in which she is
named “Woman of The Year.”
“It’s especially awesome after how
long it’s been since my first cover
[in 2005],” Longoria told the magazine.
The 38-year-old has become wellknown for her screen roles, but
has truly become a source of inspiration and an icon in the Latino
community for her work as a producer, businesswoman and philanthropist. “Maxim” took notice.
“I’ve had a beautiful relationship
with ‘Maxim’ over all these years,”
the former “Desperate Housewives” actress said. “When someone sees the cover of this issue,
they’re going to say, ‘Que rico!’”
The unbelievably busy Longoria
had just presented her thesis for a
master’s degree in Chicano studies at Cal State Northridge when
the interview with the magazine

happened.
“I was like, ‘My
brain can’t jump
that fast from a
‘Maxim’ interview
to a thesis!’” she
said, explaining
why she had to
reschedule the
interview. “Back
in high school
I really was the
chameleon, too.
I got along with
the honors math
club, then I would
go to cheerleading
practice,
and then I was
a band geek as
well.”
So what does
Longoria do to
unwind? She hits the kitchen.
“One thing people are usually surprised about when they get to know
me is how domestic I am,” she told
the magazine. “So when you see

the sexy ‘Maxim’ cover and then
you put it against me in an apron
with flour in my hair, it takes a moment to reconcile that image.”
The issue hits the stands Jan. 17.

the 25-year-old actress tweeted:

According to Just Jared, Vega and
Peña have taken each other’s last

names and will now go as Alexa
PeñaVega and Carlos PeñaVega.
The couple released a joint statement about their big day: “We are
so thrilled and blessed that we
were able to have all our close

mother stepped in and said ‘No, I’ll

County Supervisor Don Knabe told
the Associated Press that Baca informed him of his decision late Monday.
“I don’t think anyone expected this,”
Knabe said. “We’re all caught a bit
off guard.”
Because Baca is not serving out
his term the five-member Board
of Supervisors will be tasked with
choosing an interim sheriff. Baca
recommended Assistant Sheriff Terri
McDonald.
Baca has acknowledged mistakes
while strongly defending his department and distancing himself personally from allegations of misconduct.
The sheriff said he made improvements including creating a database
to track inmate complaints. He has
also hired a new head of custody
and rearranged his command staff.
On Monday, Baca said he would accept the outcome of the FBI investigation but strongly denied criticisms
that abuse was rampant.
The American Civil Liberties Union
sued the Sheriff’s Department in
2012 saying the sheriff and his
top commanders had condoned
violence against inmates. The organization released a report documenting more than 70 cases of misconduct by deputies.
A federal jury in October found Baca
personally liable for $100,000 for
failing to stop inmate abuse by deputies in Men’s Central Jail in a case
brought by a man who said he was
severely beaten while awaiting trial.
The Sheriff’s Department also faced
recent scrutiny over hiring. The department announced it was reforming its hiring practices last month after it was disclosed that 80 deputies
had criminal convictions, histories of
misconduct or other problem backgrounds. It also gave preferential
hiring treatment to friends and relatives of its employees under a special “Friends of the Sheriff” program

RECORD from Pg. 3
This year’s competition was scheduled for August in Mission Viejo, the
one-year anniversary of Granger’s
surgery. She competed in five
events, took first place in four, second in one, and broke the world record in the 50-meter butterfly, with a
time of 30.97.
“I never want to look at the records
or the times because I don’t want to
put any pressure on myself,” said
Granger, who competed in the 50-,
100-, and 200-meter butterfly, the
50-meter freestyle and the 200-meter IM. “At the Mission Viejo event,
since it was close to home, we had
some friends and family come out to
cheer for each other. That’s what is
fun. Good exercise, good friends.”
The national and world champion
does not like to talk about her victories; instead, Granger is looking
forward to getting into the pool every day and working with students
at El Camino College, where she
teaches intermediate and advanced
swimming, health, and first aid.
A faculty member at El Camino
College since 1992, Granger was
previously the head swim coach at
California Polytechnic University at
San Luis Obispo. At Cal Poly SLO,
Granger developed several AllAmerican and national qualifying
athletes. As an athlete, Granger
was an All-American sprinter and
an NCAA Division II Championship
finalist. She has a master’s degree
from Colorado State University, a
bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly
SLO, and an associate degree from
College of the Sequoias.
“I’m just trying to have fun and get in
my exercise,” she said. “Swimming
seems to be a good way to do that.”

ment of Veterans Affairs for educational expenses.
In exchange, they’re gaining expertise in computer forensics, a skill
that’s in high demand with law enforcement agencies, and one that
should lend itself to job offers once
the internship is completed.
In general, the veterans work in
a lab and scour the computers
and flash drives that agents in the
field confiscate when conducting a
search warrant. The veterans have
two priorities: analyze the evidence
to assist in the prosecution of a suspect, and help determine if there are
children still in harm’s way who need
to be rescued.
The veterans also are called on to
help agents carry out a search warrant. Zepeda said that’s how he
spent his first day on the job.
“We went on a raid and it was almost
like I never left the Army,” he said. “It
was like, ‘I’m ready. Let’s do it.’”
When it comes to child pornography,
a child is defined as any person under the age of 18. The Department
of Justice said 2,331 defendants
were charged in federal court during
the past fiscal year with producing,

distributing or receiving child pornography. During the previous four
years, the number of federal defendants charged with child pornography offenses ranged from 2,012 to
2,254.
The veterans say they’ve already
seen what Krieger called the “real
dark side of what humankind can
do.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are

this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title
insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this
information. If you consult either of these resources, you should
be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage
or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed
one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are
risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding
on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a
trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear
ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien
being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest
bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying
off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can
receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may
exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or
a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee
for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you
should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one
mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may
be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary,
trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California
Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale
postponements be made available to you and to the public, as
a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn
whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable,
the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you

Humetewa, a member of the Hopi tribe and former U.S. attorney in Arizona, has been nominated to serve on the U.S. District Court for the district of Arizona as a federal judge. If confirmed, she would be the first active member of a Native American reservation, and first Native American woman to serve as a federal judge. Not only would this bring more diversity to the federal bench, but Arizona’s prominent Native community will finally be represented in a state that is infamous for ignoring Native issues. This is a big deal because she is a Native woman from the same Arizona that has become a police state through its insistence on criminalizing communities of color, deportations, and via renegade leaders like Sheriff Arpaio. Arizona is swiftly becoming a state known for its extreme racial profiling regarding folks who look “brown.” In Obama’s first term he nominated Arvo Mikkanen of the Kiowa Tribe, but Republicans blocked the nomination. CCN International Jazz Sensation “Jimena Bautista” Swings With The United Nations Across The Border By Nathan James I was singing before I started speaking”, says Jimena Bautista, a young jazz vocalist from Mexico who has been enthralling international audiences with her unique sounds and style, “when I was 2, my family already had recordings of me. I was completely amazed and dazzled by Michael Jackson’s Beat It.”  With the knowledge that music was her passion, even at that early age, Jimena’s path was set out before her.  Born in Mexico City and raised in Cancun, it soon became clear that Jimena had inherited the talent that ran in her family.  Her father, who played with the notable pop band Mister Loco, won accolades such as “World’s Most Popular Song” at the Yamaha contest in Tokyo during 1975, for Lucky Man. Following her education at a British private school, where she became bilingual,  Jimena was eager to follow in his footsteps.  “By the time I was 13 or 14, it was a different world for me.  When I first heard Manhattan Transfer, I knew I wanted to do jazz,” she recalls.  “I was also inspired by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington’s orchestra.  This is how I got started in the music industry--it was a little difficult for me at the beginning.”  Jimena persevered, and soon met the legendary George Duke, who became her mentor.  “I met George Duke in 2003, at the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival.  I was walking in the street and recognized him, and asked him where he was going to sing,” Jimena says.  “He invited me to sing with him, live, and I was like, ‘Are you sure you want me to sing with you tonight?”  Following that improvisational performance, Jimena’s career began to roll.  She performed in such diverse locales as the Caribbean, Canada, Mexico, and recorded tracks at Bennett Studios in New Jersey.  Jimena is also a composer, and she produces all of her own music.  “I create music in a variety of genres, a fusion of jazz, blues, and Mexican,” Jimena observes.  Jimena has also become involved in social causes, joining the United Nations’ Say NO, Unite To End Violence Against Women in Latin America campaign.  “I was very honored to become part of this campaign, to send a message around the world to stop the violence,” Jimena states.  “Violence against women in Latin America is a severe problem, and we shouldn’t be afraid to say it out MULTI-CULTURAL NEWSPAPER 5 see JAZZ Pg. 6 Serving Southern California • Los Angeles • Inglewood • Gardena • Hawthorne • Lawndale • Torrance • Redondo Beach • Manhattan Beach • Ladera • Baldwin Hills • Windsor Hills • Leimert Park • Westchester Fox Hills Shopping Mall • Culver City • and surrounding areas

CCN Culver City Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr Day “What did Dr. King say? And what will we do?” is the theme for Culver City’s 9th Annual Celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The day-long celebration will feature a special screening of the epic 1970 Sidney Lumet film, “King: A Filmed Record. . . From Montgomery to Memphis. “ The keynote presentation will be given by Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith of Agape International Spiritual Center. Culver City’s MLK celebration will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, at the Culver City Senior Center, 4095 Overland Avenue in Culver City. The event is free. Other activities during Culver City’s King Day celebration include a panel discussion on the impact of Dr. King’s legacy; a dramatic rendition of Dr. King’s “I have a Dream Speech” by Actor Gerald Rivers; the debut of “Ways to Practice Nonviolence” public service announcement created by members of Culver City Teen Center and edited by animator Bruce Heller; and a special performance by singer-songwriter Rickie Byars Beckwith, Music and Arts Director of the Agape Interna- tional Spiritual Center. Actress and playwright Christina Harley and motivational speaker Wayne Slappy will co-host the day’s activities. The featured film “King: A Filmed Record . . . from Montgomery to Memphis” was originally released in theaters as a “one-time-only” event on March 24, 1970 and has been rarely seen since. There was a limited re-released in 2013 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. The film chronicles the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from the beginning of the Civil Rights movement in Montgomery, Alabama and culminating with his 1968 assassination in Memphis. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary, the film combines dramatic readings by Harry Belafonte and others involved in the civil rights movement with newsreel and archival footage to create a powerful and comprehensive record of Dr. King’s legacy. Keynote speaker Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith founded the Agape International Spiritual Center in 1986 based on faith in a vision of a trans-denominational spiritual community. Agape reaches deep into local and global communities teaching individuals about the transforming, healing power of prayer, meditation, and selfless service. Since its inception, the movement has expanded into a community of 9,000 local members and 1,000,000 friends worldwide. During Culver City’s Martin Luther King’s Celebration, Common Peace, a non-profit committed to the practice of nonviolence, will debut a public service announcement (PSA) created by members of Culver City’s Teen Center. January 9 - January 15, 2014 COMMUNITY THE Los Angeles County Sheriff, Plagued By Scandals, Announces Retirement “I didn’t want to have to enter a campaign that would be full of negative, contentious politicking,” said Baca, 71, who has spent 48 years in the Sheriff’s Department since becoming a deputy. Last month, federal prosecutors indicted 18 current and former sheriff’s deputies for alleged crimes that included beating inmates and jail visitors, falsifying reports, and trying to obstruct an FBI probe of the nation’s largest jail system. U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said the indictments showed that “some members of the Sheriff’s Department considered themselves to be above the law” and “demonstrated behavior that had become institutionalized.” Baca was born in East Los Angeles. His mother was brought illegally from Mexico when she was a child. Later, she worked as a seamstress. “In those days, undocumented was different than it is today,” Baca was quoted as saying in an interview with KPCC, a Southern California public radio station. “And so it wasn’t difficult for her to become a citizen.” Baca recalled in the interview that his parents divorced, and that his mother came close to putting him up for adoption. “She couldn’t handle three kids at the same time, so I was put up for foster care,” he said, according to KPCC. “Then my paternal grandsee RETIREMENT Pg. 6 Cal State L.A. This eight-foot mural painting with seven progressive scenes from left to right depicts the struggle that Hohn’s childhood friend, Jamie, went through to get off the floor. Though severely paralyzed from polio, he could walk with braces and crutches, by raising and swinging his legs in front of his crutches for a step. The painting also demonstrates the fortitude in overcoming insurmountable odds in spite of Jamie’s acute paralysis. Hohn, who was born with cerebral palsy, has limited use of his limbs and paints. When Hohn was 15-years-old, his mother taped a paintbrush to his head pointer. They discovered that although his head pointer improved his communicative effectiveness, it also allowed him to paint. His first watercolor paintings were impressionistic landscapes. Today, he is 3 El Camino College Professor Sets Another International Swimming Record EYE In a move that many around him said they did not expect, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca announced on Tuesday that he will retire at the end of this month. Baca, whose department and jails have been under fire that includes indictments of his deputies for allegedly beating inmates and visitors and falsifying reports, was expected to run for a fifth term despite all the scandals. The announcement came as the Sheriff’s Department and its jails have been under increasing scrutiny. In an emotional statement, Baca said the major reason for his decision was the “negative perception” the upcoming campaign would have on his department. www.calcrusnews.com El Camino College professor and master swimmer Traci Granger set yet another world record in a regional swim meet earlier this month. One of the fastest swimmers in the world, Granger tied the world record in the short course 50-meter butterfly, with a time of 31.13. She also went five for five at the meet, bringing home five first-place medals. The victory caps a tremendous year for Granger, who set several national and international speed records this past spring and summer. This month’s victory is the third world record for 2013. She is a 10-time national champion and has bested many athletes in younger age brackets, claiming these victories after taking nearly one year off from competing due to hip surgery. Granger set her first national record in 2008, winning her division in the 50-yard butterfly at the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) Short Course Championships. Since then, she continued to win gold medals and break records, often finishing with better times than competitors in younger age groups. Reaching the age of 55 this year, she moved into the 55-59 bracket. And yet, as a lifelong competitive swimmer, Granger does not set out to be a champion; she just enjoys the workout and the camaraderie of swimming with a group. “I do better in the pool when I am pushing myself and not thinking about what is going on in the races,” said Granger, who trains year-round at the Torrance Plunge with a motivated group of South Bay masters swimmers called the Los Angeles Peninsula Swimmers, or LAPS. “When I won the world record, I didn’t know how fast I was swimming but when I finished, they announced it, and I was surprised.  When I race, I’m just trying to beat one of the guys on the team who always challenges me – Duncan McBride – we have an ongoing competition between us.” Granger took a break from competitive swimming in 2012 when she noticed her leg and hip were giving her some trouble. After consulting with doctors, she was diagnosed with a torn hip flexor and surgery was sched- an accomplished artist, minister, consultant and author of several books. The rehab required her to slow down in everything, including walking, and definitely no swimming for three months. She was bored immediately. “I couldn’t sit on the stationary bike all day – I had to find something interesting to do,” she said. Granger soon met up with El Camino College exercise fitness specialist Kim Jones, who created personalized workouts to help with the rehab. “Training with Kim was outstanding – she is good for me because she asked me about my goals and helped me become stronger.” Granger said. “I told her that I would do anything that was going to make me stronger in the pool, anything that would be good for swimming. It was wonderful, with a lot of variety; I was getting bored doing the same thing. I needed to get my exercise, but I also wanted it to be interesting.” Turns out, Granger came back even faster after surgery. In May, Granger traveled to Indianapolis and shook up the short course nationals, winning five events: the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard butterfly; the 50 free; the 100 IM, and broke a national record in the 50-yard butterfly, with a time of 27.45. She felt tired, but did not detect post-surgery problems, so she decided to compete on the international level and enter the long course competition, though she has very little experience in this venue. The long course season includes races measured in meters, versus the yards presented at nationals. International competitors race in metered pools, so champions in these races are considered the fastest in the world. ments at CSULA, and her husband John Best.   Thursday, Dec. 12,  4:45-6 p.m. King Hall building’s main entrance. • 5. January 9 - January 15, 2014 Community www.calcrusnews.com 5 Obama And Congress Give One More Push For Immigration Reform His agenda tattered by last year’s confrontations and missteps, President Barack Obama begins 2014 clinging to the hope of winning a lasting legislative achievement: an overhaul of immigration laws. THE SECRET WORLD OF ESPIONAGE WEST COAST PREMIERE SUMMARY It will require a deft and careful use of his powers, combining a public campaign in the face of protests over his administration’s record number of deportations with quiet, behind-thescenes outreach to Congress, something seen by lawmakers and immigration advocates as a major White House weakness. In recent weeks, both Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, ROhio, have sent signals that raised expectations among overhaul supporters that 2014 could still yield the first comprehensive change in immigration laws in nearly three decades. If successful, it would fulfill an Obama promise many Latinos say is overdue. The Senate last year passed a bipartisan bill that was comprehensive in scope that addressed border security, provided enforcement measures and offered a path to citizenship for 11 million immigrants in the United States illegally. House leaders, pressed by tea party conservatives, demanded a more limited and piecemeal approach. Live, discover and explore this secret world... TICKETS: REAGANLIBRARY.CO M/TICKE Indicating a possible opening, Obama has stopped insisting the House pass the Senate version. And two days after calling Boehner to wish him happy birthday in November, Obama made it clear he could accept the House’s billby-bill approach, with one caveat: In the end, “we’re going to have to do it all.” Boehner, for his part, in December hired Rebecca Tallent, a former top aide to Sen. John McCain and most recently the director of a bipartisan think tank’s immigration task force. Even opponents of a broad immigration overhaul saw Tallent’s selection as a sign legislation had suddenly become more likely. Boehner also fed speculation he would ignore tea party pressure, bluntly brushing back their criticism of December’s modest budget agreement. “The question is what are the core things that Republicans can’t move away from, what are the core things that Democrats can’t walk away from,” said Republican pollster David Winston, who regularly consults with the House leadership. “You may have preferences and then you may have core elements. That’s part of the process of going back and forth.” If successful, an immigration compromise could restore some luster to Obama’s agenda, tarnished in 2013 by failures on gun legislation, bipartisan pushback on his efforts to take military action against Syria and the disastrous enrollment start for his health care law. The 38-year-old has become wellknown for her screen roles, but has truly become a source of inspiration and an icon in the Latino community for her work as a producer, businesswoman and philanthropist. “Maxim” took notice. “I’ve had a beautiful relationship with ‘Maxim’ over all these years,” the former “Desperate Housewives” actress said. “When someone sees the cover of this issue, they’re going to say, ‘Que rico!’” The unbelievably busy Longoria had just presented her thesis for a master’s degree in Chicano studies at Cal State Northridge when the interview with the magazine happened. “I was like, ‘My brain can’t jump that fast from a ‘Maxim’ interview to a thesis!’” she said, explaining why she had to reschedule the interview. “Back in high school I really was the chameleon, too. She hits the kitchen. “One thing people are usually surprised about when they get to know me is how domestic I am,” she told the magazine. “So when you see the sexy ‘Maxim’ cover and then you put it against me in an apron with flour in my hair, it takes a moment to reconcile that image.” The issue hits the stands Jan. 17. Baca recommended Assistant Sheriff Terri McDonald. Baca has acknowledged mistakes while strongly defending his department and distancing himself personally from allegations of misconduct. The sheriff said he made improvements including creating a database to track inmate complaints. He has also hired a new head of custody and rearranged his command staff. On Monday, Baca said he would accept the outcome of the FBI investigation but strongly denied criticisms that abuse was rampant. The American Civil Liberties Union sued the Sheriff’s Department in 2012 saying the sheriff and his top commanders had condoned violence against inmates. The organization released a report documenting more than 70 cases of misconduct by deputies. A federal jury in October found Baca personally liable for $100,000 for failing to stop inmate abuse by deputies in Men’s Central Jail in a case brought by a man who said he was severely beaten while awaiting trial. The Sheriff’s Department also faced recent scrutiny over hiring. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-573-1965 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com , using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-13-590685-BF . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee, or the Mortgagee’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only. As required by law, you are hereby notified that a negative credit report reflecting on your credit record may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit obligations. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 877-484-9942 or 800-280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site www.USA-Foreclosure.com or www.Auction.com using the file number assigned to this case 7042.11676.
