Model Rationale
Any profession, especially an emerging one, requires conceptual
models in order to:
• Define and describe the profession
• Provide a basis for future learning
• Allow practitioners to practice in a consistent manner
Define and describe the profession
Given our present day environment of constant
health care reform, it is critical that the helping
professions clearly describe and define their
respective roles and responsibilities within the
health care system and communicate the same to
decision makers and the public. By articulating a
clear mission and purpose, conceptual models
ensure that the unique role of a profession is
communicated and understood.

Provide a basis for future learning
Conceptual models provide a framework
for future learning by identifying key
elements for discussion and examination.
In this sense, conceptual models advance
both the theory and the practice of the
profession.

Allow practitioners to practice in
a consistent manner
Conceptual models offer
guidelines for practitioners.
Although different programs
will create their own policies
and procedures that fit for their
environment and clientele, the
model that is adopted by an
organization provides the
scaffolding on which to build its
support services.
