Editor's Notes
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128694776NOTE: US Black and Hispanic youth are primarily and much of the data suggests that they are using them primarily to interact with their friends, to listen to music, to play games. And while those activities are certainly, you know, viable and can be argued as important, it doesn't necessarily suggest that they're using their access to the Internet via their mobile devices for social educational or civic related kinds of matters.what you see is a kind of generational disconnect within black and Latino youth households where they aren't necessarily getting the guidance. Where they aren't necessarily able to have conversations or meaningful conversations with their parents or guardians about what's happening on Facebook, about the kinds of images, about the kinds of messages that friends are sharing with each other. And I think those kinds of conversations, that lack of guidance, that lack of mentoring is something that I think is quite crucial in young people's digital lives and how they navigate these experiences.Unequal difference and barriors that are contributing to differebncehttp://pewinternet.org/Reports/2011/Cell-Phones/Section-1/How-Americans-Use-Their-Cell-Phones.aspxAn interesting TWIST to the digital divide is arising – based on SOCIO-ECONOMIC factors. Those who participate and contribute to knowledge on the internet and those who only consume (read/view.)The difference lies in HOW we ACCESS information. In America it is the Black African and Latinos who have been identified with the HIGHEST use of Cellphones and Internet Access. However they have the LOWEST contribution to the internet content. The reason being that the CURRENT state of applications on Cellphones is not great for creating content on the internet.Hence there is now a SOCIO-ECONOMIC divide- impacting RACE – esp Black African and Latinos.Part two of our definition of Digital Divide, looks at the division within the groups who have access to technology and information technology. How they access the internet resources, and What they do with them differs.Listen to the NPR interview (or read the transcript) and try to answer the following questions – Why is it important for teachers to build the bridges? What technology is increasingly used?Who is being disenfranchised? What is media illiteracy? What can we do to overcome this problem?
