Since 2008, the denial rate for immigrants applying for citizenship has been rising and is
now forty-three percent. This leaves for a fifty-seven percent of an acceptance rate for
immigrants applying for a citizenship. Twenty-four years ago, there was a young man that had a
dream to come to the United States to earn a better live for him and his family. At age 16, he
crossed the border as an illegal immigrant and stayed in California for one year. He later
ventured to the state of Georgia in which he met a woman which took him under her care. This
woman then hired an immigration lawyer of the family to help the young man through the
process for becoming a U.S. citizen. With the help of this lawyer, this man gained citizenship
and later started a family of his own. The first child of this man named Alberto Alvarez is me.
Because of the impact that this lawyer had on my father, I have been attracted to the idea of
being an immigration lawyer also to help others like my father. For this reason, the topic of my
research paper is the recent demand for immigration lawyers today. This topic coincides with my
career since the recent flow of immigration to the United States has increased very drastically.
This issue is very important because the increasing flow of immigrants causes the need of
immigration lawyers to also increase. Because of the increase of immigration lawyers, there are
many openings in major cities where immigration lawyers are able to. I choose this topic since I
wanted to foresee the number of opportunities that would be available in the future if I were to
enter this career field. My research paper has helped me discover that if I were to enter this
2. career field, I must know how the system works in order to succeed. Because of this, I have
decided to visit several court cases and write down my prior observations and compare them to
the experiences I encounter in going to immigration court cases. Now that you know what I have
decided to do, I will now explain to you the steps that I took in producing my product.
To complete my product and have guidance and information for it, I choose Layli
Eskandari to become my facilitator. The qualities that I found important to search for in a
facilitator were the years of experience that they may have in the career and also the types of
diplomas they may have gained throughout his/her years. Why sending emails and visiting few
lawyers, I encountered a lawyer that was curious to what the senior project was and was excited
to help out a prospective student heading towards that path. My facilitator, Layli Eskandari,
received her B.S. degree in economics at the Canisius College Buffalo, New York. She later
gained her J.D. degree from New York Law School in New York, New York. Furthermore, with
the cooperation of my facilitator I began working on my senior project which was visiting court
cases and observing them closely. The following explanation is the steps that I took in creating
my Product.
The first step that I took in complete my project was searching for a qualified facilitator
that could help me attend some court cases. After I found my facilitator, I worked to establish a
meeting with her during the week and also after school. Because I had school the whole day, I
did not have enough time to spend with my facilitator since she had personal affairs to attend to
early in the afternoon. The days that I could not meet with her much time, her partner Ken
Levine helped me with the remainder of the time. Later, I began to attend court cases with my
facilitator and her partner Levine at the immigration court in Atlanta. The times in which the
immigration cases began were early in the morning during the same time school started. We
3. looked at our schedules to see if they had any court cases during the time in which I had the
week off in school. I then collected all my observations and reviewed it with Layli to see if the
majority of what I observed is an accurate assumption to how the immigration court works as. I
did not have enough observations for her to make any accurate comments into which could help
me better them. I attend more court cases with both Layli and her partner Ken Levine. Finally, I
began typing up my observations and put them together as if it were a small informational book.
Throughout this project, I have learned to become more efficient and aware of deadlines
in my classes. The Senior Project has helped my work through my procrastination and laziness
by utilizing an agenda and motivating me by speaking to others about their own Senior Project. I
have also learned to venture out and speak to professional adults which I would have never done
before this specific project. I have also learned how to write proper emails to these professional
workers and speaker properly. Even though I am very tied with this career emotionally, I am
pondering hard on whether I will pursue this career or follow my uncle’s steps in foreign affairs.
I will attend Georgia State University for 2012-2013 and either major in political science or
international affairs. Thank you very much judges. Are there any questions?
