   Introductions
   Syllabus
   Pretest
   Variables
   Integers
   Evaluating Variables
   Go and find one other person in this class.
    ◦ Introduce your self (name), family, and what city do
      you live in.
    ◦ Together, you must create a short list of:
      2 ways Math (all Math but extra credit for
       Algebra/Geometry) is used in real life.
      2 things you don’t understand or don’t like about
       Math.
   Now, we will take turns and introduce each
    other.
   Important things to note:
    ◦ Phone number – please call if you can’t attend
    ◦ Blog – I will post interesting and informative info
      here. You can use JCAE computers to access this
      when you are in class.
    ◦ Things you need for class
    ◦ Homework – I will try to keep it to a minimum but
      you need to practice your skills.
My favorite Algebraic expression is:

                            -3x2
This has 4 parts:
                                 Sign
                             Coefficient
                               Variable
                              exponent


    Every variable has all of these parts
            Consider    y    What are the values of the 4 parts?
   Variables are simply letters which
    take the place of a number
   Variable can stand for anything
    and they can change (therefore
    they name – variable)
   They are the mystery that we are
    trying to solve
   We solve the mystery by getting
    the variable by itself.
   Inverse means “Opposite”

   Opposite of Addition is
                    Subtraction


   Opposite of Multiplication is
                      Division
   Integers are positive and negative
    numbers
    ◦ Think of a number line or a thermometer




   To add integers with the same
    signs, you just add and keep the sign.

   For example, +2 + (+12) = +14
                 - 6 + ( -4) = -10
   Consider that +5 + (-5) = 0
    ◦ If I gave you $5 then took it back you would have
      $0. This is called a zero pair.
   We are going to “pair up” the positives and
    negatives to see what is left

   For example: -7 + 5 =
   -7+5=
   Would look this




   = -2
   So, the rule is you find the difference of the
    numbers (subtract) and the bigger number
    makes the sign.
   Time to practice
             -7 + (+12)
              8 + (-5)
              -17 + 12
              9 + (-14)
              8 + (-5)
            -16 + 16
            -24 + 15
          6 + (-13) + 16
          -12 + 7 + (-5)
       14 + (-27) + (-13)+8
   Addition of Integers

             Same sign, keep and add!
              Different signs: subtract
        Take the sign of the bigger number,
                Then you’ll be exact
   Remember your inverse properties?
   We will now use these by defining subtraction as:

    Subtraction is same as
       Adding the Opposite.
   So
   -8 – 11 becomes
       -8 + (-11)
   3 – 27 becomes
       3 + (-27)
   -5 – (-9) becomes
       -5 + 9
    Ok,

Algebra & geometry class tues wk 1

  • 2. Introductions  Syllabus  Pretest  Variables  Integers  Evaluating Variables
  • 3. Go and find one other person in this class. ◦ Introduce your self (name), family, and what city do you live in. ◦ Together, you must create a short list of:  2 ways Math (all Math but extra credit for Algebra/Geometry) is used in real life.  2 things you don’t understand or don’t like about Math.  Now, we will take turns and introduce each other.
  • 4. Important things to note: ◦ Phone number – please call if you can’t attend ◦ Blog – I will post interesting and informative info here. You can use JCAE computers to access this when you are in class. ◦ Things you need for class ◦ Homework – I will try to keep it to a minimum but you need to practice your skills.
  • 5. My favorite Algebraic expression is: -3x2 This has 4 parts:  Sign  Coefficient  Variable  exponent Every variable has all of these parts Consider y What are the values of the 4 parts?
  • 6. Variables are simply letters which take the place of a number  Variable can stand for anything and they can change (therefore they name – variable)  They are the mystery that we are trying to solve  We solve the mystery by getting the variable by itself.
  • 7. Inverse means “Opposite”  Opposite of Addition is  Subtraction  Opposite of Multiplication is  Division
  • 8. Integers are positive and negative numbers ◦ Think of a number line or a thermometer  To add integers with the same signs, you just add and keep the sign.  For example, +2 + (+12) = +14 - 6 + ( -4) = -10
  • 9. Consider that +5 + (-5) = 0 ◦ If I gave you $5 then took it back you would have $0. This is called a zero pair.  We are going to “pair up” the positives and negatives to see what is left  For example: -7 + 5 =
  • 10. -7+5=  Would look this  = -2  So, the rule is you find the difference of the numbers (subtract) and the bigger number makes the sign.
  • 11. Time to practice -7 + (+12) 8 + (-5) -17 + 12 9 + (-14) 8 + (-5) -16 + 16 -24 + 15 6 + (-13) + 16 -12 + 7 + (-5) 14 + (-27) + (-13)+8
  • 12. Addition of Integers Same sign, keep and add! Different signs: subtract Take the sign of the bigger number, Then you’ll be exact
  • 13. Remember your inverse properties?  We will now use these by defining subtraction as: Subtraction is same as Adding the Opposite.
  • 14. So  -8 – 11 becomes -8 + (-11)  3 – 27 becomes 3 + (-27)  -5 – (-9) becomes -5 + 9
