  2. 2. 2
  3. 3. Acts 16:22 And the multitude rose up together againstthem: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. 23 And when theyhad laid many stripes upon them, they cast theminto prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust theminto the inner prison, and made their feet fast in thestocks. 3
  4. 4. Pray and sing.29 Then (the jailer) called for a light, and sprang in,and came trembling, and fell down before Paul andSilas, 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, whatmust I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe onthe Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, andthy house. 4
  5. 5. Acts 16:33 And he took them the same hour of thenight, and washed their stripes; and wasbaptized, he and all his, straightway. 34 And whenhe had brought them into his house, he set meatbefore them, and rejoiced, believing in God withall his house. True faith brings joy! Faith is choosing to believe in God, in His Word, and in His Power by His Spirit. 5
  6. 6. 35 And when it was day, themagistrates sent theserjeants, saying, Let thosemen go. 36 And the keeper ofthe prison told this saying toPaul, The magistrates havesent to let you go: nowtherefore depart, and go inpeace. 6
  7. 7. 37 But Paul said unto them, Theyhave beaten us openly uncon-demned, being Romans, and havecast us into prison; and now do theythrust us out privily (secretly)? nayverily; but let them comethemselves and fetch us out.Born a Roman citizen (22:28), Paul had certainrights, including a public hearing. And no Romancitizen was supposed to be scourged. The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty. 7
  8. 8. 38 And the serjeants told thesewords unto the magistrates: andthey feared, when they heard thatthey were Romans. 39 And theycame and besought them, andbrought them out, and desiredthem to depart out of the city. 8
  9. 9. 40 And they went out of theprison, and entered into thehouse of Lydia: and when theyhad seen the brethren, theycomforted them, and departed. Who has been in prison? Who needs comforting? 9
  10. 10. How can Paul and Silas, just out of prison, comfort the church gathered at Lydias house? With the comfort of Gods Holy Spirit. 10
  11. 11. They didnt run out of Philippi with their tails tucked between their legs in fear. They took time to meet with the church and to reassure them that they were well.God had led them to Philippi to do His work; They landed in prison. 11
  12. 12. Did that indicate that Paul and Silas had missed Gods direction? Souls were saved and God was glorified. The hardships didnt matter to these men of God.May we have that same mindset! 12
