1. General Anesthesia in Pediatric Dentistry

2. • Dental treatment is one of the most common reasons for
administering General Anaesthesia to Children.
• Most Operative Pediatric Dentistry is carried out to treat
Dental Caries, which is a preventable disease of the
mineralized tissues of the teeth.
• Dental treatment may involve the restoration of teeth,
extraction using precaine gels for teeth that cannot be
restored.
• In children, these procedures are often associated with a
significant amount of pain and anxiety.

3. • Safety is a parent’s prime concern when their child is to be
receiving any form of sedation when undergoing a dental
procedure.

4. Perception of pain in children

6. Types of Sedation and Anesthesia Used on
Children—Know Your Options:
Nitrous oxide
• This is a mild sedative and the least invasive. It's commonly
known as 'giggle gas' or 'laughing gas.'
• Children breathe this with a little oxygen.
• They don't usually go to sleep, but most will get more
relaxed.
• Most will get a little silly and lightheaded, but a few don't like
the feeling.

7. Mild sedation
• This medication (or a combination of medications) is
commonly used on older children and adults.
• Your child would be calm and awake and sometimes able to
do what the dentist or oral surgeon asks him or her to do.
• After the procedure, your child may not even remember
things about the dental visit.
• Dentists and oral surgeons can safely give these medications
while they do the dental work, because your child remains
awake.

8. Moderate sedation
• Under moderate sedation children are sleepier, but they are
usually able to do what the dentist or oral surgeon asks them
to do.
• They breathe on their own and will usually wake up easily.
• Most children will not remember anything about the
procedure.
• Dentists and oral surgeons can safely give these medications
while they do the dental work.

9. Deep sedation
• This involves intravenous (IV) medications to help your child
sleep through the procedure.
• While your child may still move a little and sometimes make
noises, he or she may not be able to breathe well on his or
her own.
• Additional qualified personnel is always present during this
procedure to monitor the child’s vitals such as the heart rate,
heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen saturation during the
procedure and until the child wakes up.

10. General anesthesia
• Under general anesthesia, your child will be completely asleep
and pain free.
• Specially-trained anesthesia professionals (physicians,
dentists, or certified nurse anesthetists) will administer
medications and monitor your child while the dentist or oral
surgeon performs the dental procedure or surgery.
• General anesthesia is to be given only in a dental office which
is especially equipped or a hospital.

12. Indications of General Anesthesia
General anaesthesia may be required for Pediatric Dentistry in
circumstances where:
• The use of local anaesthesia is either contraindicated, or
inappropriate due to the presence of acute orofacial infection.
• There has been previous failure of local anaesthesia or
sedation.
• The patient is unable to cooperate with the proposed
treatment due to immaturity, disability, or language
difficulties.

13. • The patient suffers from a psychological disorder such as
severe anxiety.
• Extensive treatment is required.
Before Sedation
• A range of preventive measures are taken before commencing
the procedure.
• Parents must restrict food and drink before sedation, and it's
especially important that parents follow these guidelines
closely for key safety reasons, as sedation poses the risk of
stomach contents being vomited and inhaled into the lungs.

14. • Dressing the child in loose-fitting clothing also helps because
it allows dental assistants to attach monitors quickly and
without fuss.
• Parents must provide a full medical history and tell the dentist
if the child is receiving any prescriptions, over-the-counter
medication or herbal supplements.

15. After Sedation
• Once the child wakes up after sedation he/she may feel funny
or nauseated and may be fussy. Dentists in North Delhi, advice
that the presence of parents help manage the child once
he/she wakes up after sedation.
• Longer-lasting aftereffects of sedation include loss of physical
coordination, dizziness, sleepiness and nausea, so close
monitoring at home is mandatory.

give the child only soft foods. If the child experiences
vomiting, severe pain, severe bleeding or fever, parents
should contact the dentist immediately. When the mouth has
healed, the child may continue caring for his teeth as normal,

the requirement of the procedure.
• Once the anesthesia is given, the child sleeps and does not
move, does not feel the pain thereby allowing the dentist to
do the procedure.
