Having spent a majority of his education dedicated to learning about marine biology, Dr. Christian Heesch, found it interesting that zooplankton has a community-oriented behavior. In the oceans there are millions upon millions of zooplankton living and providing a balance to the aquatic ecosystem.
1. Dr. Christian Heesch has Studied
Cnidarians
Throughout his studies to become a marine biologist, Dr. Christian Heesch became
fascinated with the organisms known as cnidarians. This phylum is home to the true
jellyfish. A true jellyfish is one that has offensive and defensive capabilities, such as the
ability to sting its prey or a threatening predator. Stinging smaller forms of copepod
zooplankton is what helps to keep the copepod population at a reasonable level in all of the
oceans around the world.
2. Dr. Christian Heesch and the Importance
of Krill
As a marine biologist, Dr. Christian Heesch grasps the delicate and crucial relationship
between krill and other marine species or organisms. Krill is a specimen which feeds on the
phytoplankton called diatoms in colder waters. In warmer ocean areas the krill tends to eat
smaller animals. As a member of the food web, krill is the largest nutrient source for all
types of whales in existence today. Without krill, one population would die while another
would become overwhelming.
3. Dr. Christian Heesch and Zooplankton
Communities
Having spent a majority of his education
dedicated to learning about marine biology,
Dr. Christian Heesch, found it interesting
that zooplankton has a community-oriented
behavior. In the oceans there are millions
upon millions of zooplankton living and
providing a balance to the aquatic
ecosystem.
However, not all zooplankton live in the
same areas. The prefer to group together
in a communal fashion that suits their
habitat and nourishment needs. This
helps scientists place boundaries within
a large water mass.
4. Dr. Christian Heesch has Hiked Kalalau
Trail
Hiking is one of marine biologist
Dr. Christian Heesch's best loved
pastimes. Over the last fifteen
years he has had the opportunity to
hike is some of the finest locations
around the world, and Kalalau
Trail in Kauai is one of his
favorites. Though this trail is
known to be one of the most
dangerous in the United States, it is
also one of the lushest with
greenery and wildlife. He is
especially fond of the waterfalls.
