Discussion Time
 Use Readings: “The Land-Grant Tradition,” “Mission and Current Strategic Plan,”
“ISU Founding and Land-Grant Status,” “ISU Timeline, 1858-1874”
 Groups of 5-6: select roles
 Monitor: keep the group on-time (at least 3 minutes per person)
 Recorder: note important points of discussion
 Speaker: will summarize your group’s discussion to the class, you can choose more than
one Speaker
 Each person bring up your discussion point from the readings, spend at least three
minutes discussing each person’s idea/question
Large Discussion
 Each group: Speaker(s) summarize your group’s discussion using Recorder’s notes
to the rest of the class
 Share Examples: how does your program’s mission fit into what you know about
ISU?

 Read from Text pp. 52-56 (“Small Groups: The Spirit of Collaboration”) SG
 Review from Text pp. Chapter 22 EW and pp. 47-48 SG, design decisions

 Think about image sources
 You must cite where images come from
 Get in groups of 3-4
 Find an image from a Public Domain site (go to ePortfolios Quick Links and Resources
on Canvas)
 Practice wrapping text around an image with partners (using links on Canvas)
 Insert a picture
 Wrap sample text around it
 Insert an appropriate caption
 Cite your image using MLA Formatting and Style Guide (Works Cited: Electronic Sources)
Online Documents
 Individually: look at an online public document for your campus organization or
program. Describe the document’s:
 Main ideas
 How it is organized
 The view it gives of the place or organization
 How does it fit ISU’s and the land-grant mission?
 Discussion: Share with your group your answers to these questions, showing them
the document along with your talk
 Save your answers and partner responses as notes for Assignment 3
Assignment for Friday
 Read Kotaku Article (on Canvas) on game review plagiarism; pay attention to how
paraphrasing too closely is the same as plagiarism
 Work on Assignment 3
 You will sign up for one-on-one conferences on Friday (to be held during Week 5);
you must sign up for a conference or you will be marked absent that week

 Ask questions
 Collect hard copies of documents (brochures, etc)
 Select a visual for your paper and work on inserting it, wrapping text around it, and
captioning it.
 Read from Texts: Chapters 15 and 23 EW; Review pp. 49-52 SG.
 Bring draft of #3 to conference. At your conference, be prepared to show how you
are integrating source material.
 Missing a scheduled conference counts as an absence.
 Peer conferences will be Monday of Week 6: bring your latest draft of Assignment
3 to class
Field Trip Overview: University Museums
 Spend time exploring the location
 Spend at least 10 minutes writing about what you saw, heard, and felt
 Based on your visit, how might the this Museum fulfill ISU’s mission as a Land Grant
University?
 Will meet briefly at the end of class time to discuss what we wrote
 Share with the class: what is one visual you could get to support what you wrote?
