4. Gamification and Augmented Reality: 2 Emerging
Technologies that can Boost and Engage Learning
Today we look at two new tools to engage students through
their mobile devices using Las Vegas history as example.
Layar.com: A browser for reading AR in print.
Parwinr.com: An app to create “gamed” videos.
We’ll explore other genre’s of helpful mobile uses to help you
stimulate student’s critical thinking and deep learning.
See the Presentation Wiki for the full list and post your examples:

5. How Augmented Reality
Stimulates Deeper Learning
Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world
environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input
such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. (from mashable.com/)
Enhanced 3D and physical representations
Extended information on demand
Student-controlled access
and exploration.
Multiple media inputs
Appeal to kinesthetic & spatial
intelligences, especially for athletes
and those with ADD.

Apple files new AR
system patent GeoTravel: AR enhanced
In a new patent filed
last month, Apple is
developing an
augmented reality
system that combines
the real world with
computer-generated
imagery — i.e., a live
video over-laced by an
informational layer.

8. The Morning Challenge! … Tool 1
Layar
Layar is an easy download: http://layar.com/
Here’s a fast look at how …
It has effective tutorials, but there are always glitches. Check
the “How-to” link on the Wiki page.
To use the Browser App, download it to your mobile device. It
shows you a couple static pages, then it opens in READ mode.
That’s it!
Point at any image or document and if it has hot spots (or QR
Codes) it will find them. It can also be coded to a GPS location.

9. The Morning Challenge! … Tool 2
ParWinr: with a 10-second learning curve, one of the newest
and most exciting tools to gamify any video content.
Open a free account and start working immediately … really!
You don’t need to have an account to do today’s activities.
Go to http://parwinr.com and sign up.
Here’s a fast look at how it works in action and how to create!
Right now, there are individual accounts, but later there will be
teacher-controlled student accounts also.
Parwinr works on the Web on Android devices. It will soon be
launched on iPads but may or may not be ready by our show
time. Test it and see! All games are easily viewed on computer.
It only launched 4 weeks ago, so you see it in action first.

10. The Hunt!
The posters around the room have 4 POLLS and a link with 2 history VIDEOS with
embedded questions (4 min. & 5 min.). Get all the answers you can! Answers will be
revealed on the Wiki at showtime.
