Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Today many grandchildren are going to live with their grandparents because of death, divorce,
incarceration, and bad parenting. The grandchildren mostly come from dysfunctional families and
may have been exposed to sexual and physical violence and illicit drug and alcohol use from their
parents. Many grandparents do not have a clue about how their life is fixing to change with raising
their grandchildren and challenges that lie ahead. This research will look at the challenges
grandparents face, the effects on the grandchildren, substance abuse, interventions, support groups,
and public policy. When grandparents are put into the caregiver role for their grandchildren many
things are going to change for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Substance Abuse.
These contributing factors do play a major role and does affect the grandparent and this will affect
the grandchild emotionally, behaviorally, and physically (Pinson–Millburn, 1996). The main
contributing factor that grandparents face is their limited physical or emotional health and their main
concern is that their grandchild will miss out on the physical activities with their parents raising
them (Backhouse & Graham, 2012). The research does show how this can very overwhelming with
everyone involved.
The Effect on Grandchildren The effects on grandchildren can be both positive and negative by
being raised with their grandparent or grandparents. The main contributing factors that
grandchildren face are the loss of their parents because of abusing drugs and alcohol, parents who
are incarcerated, parents who abused and neglected them, and parents who have died from AIDS,
accidents and other illnesses (Pinson–Millburn, 1996). These factors can lead to potential problems

Biography of Grandparent
"I had an amazing life. I had wonderful husband I loved more than anything else is the world. I had
six beautiful children, who gave me nine grandchildren, and the strength I needed throughout my
life. I have regrets; but everyone does. I believe my life was wonderful because everyday I pray for
my family and thank God for what he has given me throughout the years. The good times, and the
difficult ones – everything was a blessing." Winnie, now 75 years old, believes she has been blessed
everyday of her life. It sounded surprising after I interviewed her to hear how religious and
optimistic she is about her life. You see, I knew her as my quirky grandmother – who used to

Every Sunday, after church, her father would bring her and her siblings to the park near their house
and play with them until her mother was finished making lunch for the family. Winnie's friends
during her childhood were the "kids who were in her church and her neighborhood." She never
remembered having her mother dislike any of her childhood friends; but emphasized that she spent
the most of her time with her older sister Angela. Annie and Angela were best of friends growing up,
always playing dress up and house. To this day, her and Angela have a strong bond despite living
miles apart. In her teenage years in the 1950's, her mother and father never emphasized the
importance of her schoolwork. They were still very strict religiously, but believed that the woman

My Grandparents Speech
Many people only have the privilege of seeing their grandparents on birthdays and other holidays.
Luckily for me, I see mine almost every week. My grandparents, specifically my mom's parents,
have both played a large role in shaping me into the person I am today. My grandpa, or "Pa",
especially, has been more of a father to me than my own. He has held an essential role in my life,
and is continually shaping me each day. My grandpa is a strong–willed and old fashioned man. He
likes to do things his way. In addition, he always works hard and provides for his family.
Throughout the course of my rather short life, my grandpa has taught me many lessons. Here are
three stories that stick out to me the most. They taught me to be adventurous, to work hard, and to
get back up after failure. The whole family was there, as my grandpa decided to make a big
purchase. He was buying a 2005 Chevy SSR convertible, and five year old me was ecstatic. After a
long night of waiting for all the details to be worked out, the car was his. Me, being the bratty kid I
was, jumped in and said, "I get the first ride!" On my first ride, I remember the roar of the engine.
"That sounds like kitties purring." I said. My grandpa laughed and said, "You are right. Those are
kitties!" I exclaimed, "Well then make those kitties purr!" He laughed and revved the engine as I
stuck my hands out into the wind, laughing and yelling as I did so. The fun continued as we
continued to laugh and yelled, "Faster!

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Video Analysis
In the video "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren," they discuss the struggles of grandparents
having to take on the parental role of their grandchildren because their grandchild's parents could no
longer take care of them. The grandparents who chose to look after their grandchildren acknowledge
the difficulties of raising their grandchild, but they still chose to go forth with their decision because
they feel a sense of responsibility to look after their grandchildren when their parents are not in a
positive position to look after their own children. An example of this reason in the video is when
Mic, the founder of The Grandparent's Foundation, revealed that she began looking after her
daughter's children because her daughter was involved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mic conveys the hardships of raising a grandchild when she states that she must work two jobs in
order to provide food for her family because the organization she founded does not provide enough
income. Mic's worries of having to provide enough money to support her household has notably
negatively affected her mental health due to the number of responsibilities that has been put on her.
This is a common situation for many grandparents who look after their grandchildren as Burke
reveals that many grandparents "report feeling emotionally drained, depressed, and worried about
what will happen to the children if their own health fails" (Burke 435). Also, the issue of
grandparents raising grandchildren relates to the generativity versus stagnation stage of
psychosocial development. This is due to the fact that in this psychosocial stage "adults focus more
intently on extending commitments beyond oneself and one's life partner to a larger group––family,
community or society" (Burker 423) when adults in middle adulthood become generative. These
qualities of generativity are easily found in Mic and the other grandparents that were interviewed in
the video because they have made the selfless decision to take on the responsibility of caring for
their grandchildren in order to give them a better future although they should be retiring at this point

Herman, the part of rural Minnesota no one even knows exists, population 426. The worn down
elementary school, the old elevator, post office, liquor store, and bank. That's it. That's all that exists
in the tiny town. Broken, crumbling roads. Houses falling to pieces, lawns overgrown with weeds.
Everything falling apart. Except there's my grandparents' house. The tall, wooden brown house
perfectly put together on the edge of town, towering over everything that used to be.
A balcony sits to the north, overlooking what's left of the city beyond it. Huge, triangular windows

weekend is going to be great! After I got inside I caught myself smiling like an idiot. I texted Jordan
telling him that my parents just left, and reminded him to use the back gate and just walk up to my
room. He already knew about their long weekend cruise and how I will be home alone. The best

My Grandparents ' House Is My Heaven
My grandparents' house is my heaven since I was born there; I didn't moved out with my parents
until I was seven.
My grandparents live in an old apartment which is surround by orderly and crowded houses that has
aged through time. As I mentioned, the apartment they lived in is special and honorable since it was
provided by the company that my grandparents worked with. "Paper Machinery Company", as what
my grandfather said when I asked him where he works, with a proud smile stapled on his face.
Three blocks away from the building where my grandparents work their hearts out is where you'll
find my heaven. It is surrounded with a variety of colorful fruits, and freshly picked soil stained
vegetables. I could still remember the strong smell of the salt stinking fish when I passed by that
crowded market. My family who comes from my father's side worked there three generations ago.
My grandfather was a senior engineer; this house was given by the factory director as a gift. From
the first floor to fifth, every family member that lived in that building had a similar but different
background. Some of the family members were leaders from the factory, and some were designers.
When I was young, I spent most of my days at my grandparents' house when my parents went to
work for a living. I always watch people hurriedly walk out from their doors with different colors,
and rushed into the narrow small gates, and get on the bus. They never forgot to wear their smile as

My Experience With My Grandparents
My entire life I have lived with or in close proximity to my grandparents. I have had countless
conversations with them through my life. But the older I noticed our conversations diminishing and
becoming less frequent due to my busy schedule. When this assignment was introduced to me, I
jumped at the opportunity to interview and reconnect with one of my grandparents. I decided on
interviewing my grandmother because she is comfortable with english and our native language,
tagalog. By speaking to someone I am blood related to and grew up with, I automatically gained a
sense of rapport. If I interviewed a stranger, I feel it would have been more difficult to gain their
trust. Geertz explains in his article Daedalus, how him and his wife struggled to gain the acceptance
of a certain group of people and of how one day they finally gained their trust. He states, "In Bali, to
be teased is to be accepted. It was the turning point so far as our relationship to the community was
concerned, and we are quite literally "in"" (Geertz, 2005:59). While conducting my interview, one
tip I used that Joseph Hermanowicz suggested was to "Play the innocent sometimes,"
(Hermanowicz, 2002:486). Since the interviewee was a relative, this tip was used many times
throughout the interview. At many points during the interview my grandmother would say
something like, "I've told you this many times already." Although this was true, I noticed playing the
innocent and convincing her to retell me those

Living At Your Grandparent 's House
Growing up in your grandparent's house is a wish that many kids have. As a kid your grandparents
are the people who tend to spoil you rotten and let you do things that your parents wouldn't let you
do. What young kid wouldn't find that appealing? I know I did, however, my wish happened to
come true. I grew up in my grandparent's house until I was about six years old. I remember hearing
the six o'clock siren which meant it was time to eat, or seeing the street light come on which meant
it was time to come in for the night. I walk around and see empty lots where houses once were. I
notice new buildings in place of old ones and new people rather than the regulars. From time to time
I make my way back to Fessenden North Dakota to visit with my grandparents. In doing so, I have
witnessed many changes to not only the town but to their house. While living at my grandparents I
had a few close friends. My best friend even lived right down the street from my grandparent's
house in a motel that her father owned. As I drive down that same exact street I no longer see the
flashing open sign that was once lit. It looks like an abandoned, haunted building. I pull into the
drive way and notice something strange. It's very noticeable but strange at the same time. Not only
is the house painted a more white color other than the old blueish one, there is a four–teen foot
garage staring me right in the face. I get out of my car and soon realize the front door has moved.

Speech On Grandparents
Nani and Pop have had many unforgettable and defining moments in our lives together. But
becoming grandparents six times (so far!) is right at the top of the list! We know that you have heard
stories about how excited we were to become your grandparents. I immediately nicknamed myself
POP, and shouted about it to the world. We fell head–over–heels in love with each of you the
moment we met you, and we couldn't wait to begin sharing adventures with you. And that love
grows stronger and deeper with each passing day.
What a joy it has been for us to watch you all as you have grown, and to see you develop your own
unique personalities. And we hope that you all know how important it is to us to always be here for
you, and to share with you some valuable lessons that will help you as you go through life.
We wish – perhaps more than you will ever know – that we could promise you a life free from pain,
temptation and suffering. But we know all too well from the personal experiences of living life in
this world that this will not be true for you. You will face many challenges. As a matter of fact, the
Bible tells us that, as Christians, we will be continually engaged in a spiritual battle, that we are at
war!
The Apostle Paul tells us (Ephesians 6:13) to "take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able
to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm." In the next few verses, he describes
the various pieces of armor that God has given Christians to help

Grandparents influence their grandchildren both directly, through face–to–face interaction, and
indirectly, by providing emotional support (Doucette–Dudman 98). When a grandchild confronts a
problem and knows that her grandparents are there to support her, she is indirectly influenced by
their emotional support.
Grandparents also serve as role models to their grandchildren. A role is defined by the "set of
expectations, rights, obligations, behaviors, and duties associated with a particular status position"
(Newman 592). Grandparents have a variety of roles that they play in respect to their grandchildren.
They are stress buffers, watchdogs, supporters, family historians, and much more. Children, often
fearing punishment, do not want to go to their parents with their problems. Grandparents can
indirectly teach children the lessons that they need to learn by joking and kidding with them, talking
about growing up, giving advice, discussing problems, providing discipline, taking trips, teaching a
skill or game, or talking about disagreements the child had with the parents (Doucette–Dudman
112). Parents seem to be more uptight with their children, perhaps because it is the first time they
have ever had to be responsible for another human being's life. On the other hand, grandparents
have already been through parenthood, making them more confident, and therefore, more relaxed in
their attitude towards raising children (Kornhaber

However, my grandmother told me that how they faced the hardships in the 1900s because they had

economically stable as equal because their employment rates had been stabled and most people were

the total fertility rate of the Korea decreased to 4.5 to 1.7 because the technology had been improved

How Grandparents Are Assuming the Role as Caregivers
In the absence of biological parents, grandparents may assume the role as the caregivers of their
grandchildren. The absence of a biological parent may be due to incarceration, drug abuse, mental
illness or military deployment (Yancura, 2013). Each of which disallow acceptable care from the
biological parent which sometimes places the burden to care for the child on the grandparent. This
absence is commonly known as custodial grand–parenting (Population Reference Bureau, 2011). In
these circumstances the grandparent often takes the grandchild into care to avoid them going into
foster–care. While this may be necessary for the children's safety, permanency, and well–being, this
may also contribute to serious problems affecting the grandparent's own well–being. According to
Yancura, the risk of physical, intellectual, or emotional stress becomes greater the longer a
grandparent cares for their grandchild. It may be severely overwhelming for grandparents to meet
the essential needs for a child's well–being when already at a point in life when their own health
problems are at a rise (Barusch, 2013). Balancing care for oneself and for the grandchild becomes
stressful. Barusch (2013) explains, often grandparents must sacrifice their own well–being and
instead nurture the grandchild. However, among the difficulties, grandparents still may feel an
obligation to care for their grandchildren. Census (2010) reports a growing number of grandchildren
in the United States are living

Taking care of a grandchild may put the grandparent's future in jeopardy. Some grandparents have to
make job related sacrifices while grandparents who were comfortably retired deplete their savings to
take help support their grandchildren. Taking on a parental roll has effects on a person's lifestyle and
his or her relationship with friends and family. The extent of the effects depends upon the extent of
child–care that is provided by the grandparent. Grandparents who are raising their grandchildren
assume that when their children were grown, it would relinquish the role of raising children but now
they are raising their grandchildren. Sometimes it makes the grandparent resentful (Driver et. al,
1997).
Legal Issues
There are numerous legal issues that complicate grandparents raising grandchildren. Living
arrangements within these households are quite often fluid and informally arranged. Grandparents
raising grandchildren are likely to move in and out of the grandparent caregiver role throughout
their life depending on the needs of adult children and grandchildren (Lee, E. & LaVeist, 2005). Due
to these types of living arrangements, grandparents who raise their grandchildren have no legal
rights concerning their grandchildren. They may be viewed as "babysitters." By not having rights
concerning the grandchild, the grandparent must abide by whatever

The Current Development Of Grandparents
Subjective data. Both parents feel that they are unable to satisfy their grandparents' health needs, or
in completing the regular daily tasks. The mother stated "We are putting all our efforts to care for
them, but seems that is not enough because they are not getting well; We don't know what to do".
They feel overwhelmed, tired, and stressed. The maternal grandmother stated that "she wants to help
her daughter in the house chores as before, and now she is useless and a burden to the family". They
stated that sometimes grandparents are more private about their feelings and do not openly talk.
Objective data. The family roles have changed due to the maternal grandmother illness. They are not
dealing well with the situation. There is evidence of role overload. The current development of
grandparents' physical and psychological conditions is affecting the family function. The family
does not have an emergency plan to deal with family crisis. They show symptoms of anxiety
(crying), and feelings of powerlessness. The paternal grandmother does not have health insurance;
she is also noncompliance with the medication regimen and she does not want to visit a doctor.
Grandparents are not adjusting well to their age developmental tasks regarding health and role
changes. The two parents are trying to adapt and accommodate the caregiving roles between
children and grandparents, but they are unable to do so.

I Am Talking About My Grandparent 's Home
In life, there are things and places that shape who we are. Those objects that we hold near and dear
to our hearts is what makes these things significant to ones life. For me, it is a certain place that I
hold near and dear. This place not only was always a safe haven for me, but also a spot to where I
could just be free and relax from all obstacles life has thrown. The place I am talking about is my
Grandmother 's house. As a child, my cousins and I would visit her and my grandfather. Coinciding
with their home and personalities, their yard alone, was so full of life. Of course family were not the
only people who were allowed to visit their home. Anyone who had problems at home, nowhere to
go, or just wanted to be somewhere where there is peace and quiet were always and still are
welcome. The reason to why my Grandparent 's home is so influential to me is because just like
other things in my life, it shaped and molded me into the person that I am. Along with giving me
insight to what my family is truly all about. One example would be that my grandparents still follow
traditions of our ancestors, like preserving fruits and vegetables for example peaches, pears, and
apples, and growing vibrant vegetable gardens. Another would be the wild life and vivid open space
my grandparents had. Also, the stories, pictures, and history of our ancestors that were told and
showed to us as children. These things, in general, are what is significant about my Grandparent 's
home to me.

Grandparents Against Homework By Joseph Biscoglio And...
Joseph Biscoglio and Nieli Langer, in their academic journal "Grandparents Against Homework,"
promote to the readers that devoted grandparents can be of great assistance to their grandchildren in
regards to homework. Biscoglio and Langer's purpose is to inform the audience of an ongoing
debate over the impact of homework, or rather the lack thereof. Much of this debate is centered
around the idea that homework is beginning to take over student's time to do other socially
enriching activities such as sports, music, family, community, religion and even sleep. While
Biscoglio and Langer do a good job informing their readers of this debate, they tend to make a lot of
broad assumptions and do not clearly tie together their argument. Biscoglio ... Show more content

Biscoglio and Langer believe ultimately that homework is getting in the way of created a balanced
social life. They say, "If parents were no longer held captive by the demands of their children's
homework, they could develop their own priorities for family life" (157–158). In the next section of
their journal, Biscoglio and Langer refer to No Child Left Behind and their standards, and how this
effects how much homework is given out. They spell out the idea that in order to keep up with the
standards and to stay competitive, teachers will give more homework on topics that have not been
taught. They say that "Homework has displaced real teaching and real learning during school time"
(158). Before getting to the main point of their article, Biscoglio and Langer explain what less
homework might look like. They say that in addition to helping with the children's health, "we could
also be reducing children's and parents' stress levels and increasing positive mood levels..." (159).
Lastly, Biscoglio and Langer end their article with their main argument that the help of grandparents
with schoolwork will be overall most beneficial to the students and their families as a whole. They
provide the reader with the idea proposed by Erik Erikson call generativity. Their definition states:
Generativity...involves the demonstration of a clear capacity to unselfishly guide the next

The Pros And Cons Of Grandparents

pregnancy, divorce, drug or alcohol addiction, physical health issues, death of the parent, unstable
home life, homelessness, child neglect or abuse, or one of the parents is in jail.
In "The Real Reality" program, we saw two different examples; one was the two foster care youths
that they moved into a foster family within less than an hour, for their mother won't be able to take
care of them, because she was going to the jail. Second example was, the grandparents that were
taking care of their two grandchildren, even though they were suffering with their bills, yet they
were feeling themselves responsible for their grandchildren. According to (Langosch, 2012) "Grand
parents generally step in when parents troubled lives – as a result of substance abuse, child abuse
and neglect, family violence, or physical or mental illness threaten children's well–being". 2. Grand
parents will prefer to raise their grandchildren rather than leave them to stranger, for they love them
more than anyone else, they have a close blood bond, emotional bond, and attachment with their
grandchildren, they have the same family history, values, and culture, that they want to pass them to
the next generation; by

Interview With A Interview With Grandparents
For this interview, I decided to interview my grandma. Her name is Diane Smith, she is 74 years old
and does not look it! She was recently widowed last year, yet they had many happy years together.
They had two children together, my Uncle Dave and my mother, Cherie. I asked her what was the
best thing about being her age and she the first thing she said was seeing her children and
grandchildren grow up. She is enjoying seeing and interacting with her grandchildren in just the
daily activities. Ever since she has moved from Wisconsin to Iowa about 3 years ago, she has been
able to go to her grandchildren's sporting events or birthday parties. Another great aspect that she
mentioned was her senior discounts, she says she takes full advantage of those. The worst part about
her age is arthritis. Arthritis makes her daily life just a little more challenging and harder to get up in
the mornings. "Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints accompanied by pain, stiffness, and
movements problems. This incurable disorder can affect hips, knees, ankles, fingers, and vertebrae."
(Santrock, 380). While she is a generally happy and content person, there are a few things that tend
to occupy her mind. Since she has gotten older, she has had a harder time with small things. After
the move to Iowa, she had become depressed and was feeling rather down. During this time, my
mother would usually provide meals for her. She also would get meals from Meals on Wheels. She

Importance Of Grandparents In Richard Wagamese's Indian Horse
Grandparents shows you the way of life, the morals, the values and the culture. This is what Naomi,
grandmother of Saul always taught her family in the novel "Indian Horse". Richard Wagamese, tells
his story through his novel 'Indian Horse' in the hope to heal and reclaim his life. In the novel, the
main character Saul faces tough circumstances which shattered him completely and make him feel
worthless. In Richard Wagamese's novel "Indian Horse" the relation of a grandson with his
grandmother shows the importance of elders in person's childhood. While stating his life story he

When they do, they will find Saul and we will lose them both." (Wagamese 17). Out of many
important things Naomi also taught Saul how to hunt and harvest rice through efficient techniques
so that they can learn how to make food. Also, in her last days she took great care of Saul even after
his parents abandon them. She made all the arrangements to move from Gods lake to Minaki
because if they stayed there they would have died from hunger and cold. During the entire journey,
she had ensured that Saul should remain warm even though she had to sacrifice, like in the novel
Saul questioned her what about you and she made a gesture that we have to keep moving. These all
things showed how important was Saul to her which made her to risk her own life to save him that's
why when Father Leboutilier hugged Saul he felt loved and made him think of Naomi, who he still

My Grandparent Era
In my grandparents' era, many people were having hard times with their financial and social support
for the families because they had to deal with an invasion of the Japan from 1910 through 1945 and
they had been experienced the family lost during the Korean War. Many people survived from the
hardships in these situations so that they could give better environments for the future generations.
My grandparents were meeting each other during the Japanese invasion era during the 1930s
because they did not have choices to listen to their parents in the future. Therefore, my grandparents
got married each other and had many kids in the later. Also, my grandparents found the partners
from the different families in that time so that they could get married in happy lives. In Korean
Society, marriage arrangement between two families became trends so that they could listen to their
parents and have kids to live in the society. My grandparents and parents era, they were thought that
finding the partner or their children is very important to have a secure family life. However, most of
the young people are postpone their marriage because they have a hard time to find jobs to prepare

Being Raised By Grandparents
Being raised by grandparents. Every day, the thoughts of never being loved enough by the parent to
stay or to help the person, who has the custody, take care of the child; run around the mind in a
repeated process like a scratched CD. Grandparents basically do a rear march as they repeat the
process of taking care of the children of their children. Grandparents are the parents of a person's
father or mother – paternal or maternal. There are many different reasons to why parents give, lend,
or are forced their parental rights to their parents, who are the child's grandparents such as the parent
being incarnated, death/illness, on drugs, completing school, or in the armed forces such as the
military, navy, or the air force. So basically when the grandparents take on this role they are
becoming a "safety–net" which catches the parents so they don't hit the harsh ground of reality. ...

In what used to be called the golden years, a surging number of grandparents are slammed with
continued family obligations. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of grandkids living
with a grandparent has jump shot a shockingly 64% in the past two decades. This increase comes as
states are placing more foster children with relatives in response to research which shows that
children are better off with family rather than in foster care. There is an economic incentive, too.
Generations United, nonprofit advocates for "kinship families," says taxpayers would see significant
savings by keeping children out of foster care and placing them with family members. African–

Grandparents are people who can have an impact on their young and adolescent grandchildren lives.
Grandparents can influence their grandchildren decisions, by sharing their experiences and lessons
they have learned. In other word, grandparents' choices and lived experience can help their
grandchildren make better decisions. In addition, grandparents can guide their grandchildren by
being childcare providers or caregivers. Grandparents who provide childcare can show their
grandchild guidance, by teaching or advising them how to do things that will help them throughout
their life. Additionally, grandparents who are caregivers can be a guidance, because they are

Through the Eyes of a Baby Boomer
"The baby boomers owe a big debt of gratitude to the parents and generations – who we haven't
given enough credit to anyway – for giving us another generation (Steven Spielberg)." This quote
reminded me of my grandma and based on the quantity of her interview I did with her. The majority
of baby boomers consistently think they had to work for themselves because no one else was going
to bring in the funds for them. This is true, but at the same time without having their parents and
grandparents help produce another complete generation, they wouldn't even be here. We don't give
them enough credit just like Steven Spielberg said. My grandma is a baby boomer, and in one of the
questions I asked her, she completely said, "We knew we had to work for what we wanted and that
our parents weren't going to give it us. We had to get what we wanted." She states this message all
right here. What she is forgetting however without her parents and many other parents and
grandparents, there wouldn't have been a greater, full capacity generation that I know call my
grandparents as many others do as well.
I had the opportunity to interview my grandma as someone that is diverse from me because she
grew up in a different time and has experienced the many different changes over the years. That was
the first question I asked my grandma Dorothy, what was growing up like when you were a child?
My grandma grew up with eleven in her family. She was the oldest of the

The grandparents may have several issues for refusing to say anything negative about the daughter.
One reason may be due to the daughter and grandchildren being here illegally and are fearful of the
deportation of the children but most likely it is as Diller explained, "Asian clients value a collective

the families trust that they will at least open up and talk to you, although Dr. Hocoy states, "It is,
however, important to lead with regard to the direction of therapy and spell out expectations the

Opioid Epidemic Has Grandparents Becoming Parents Again
Opioid addiction rates are on rate s are on the rise and is creating a new sort of problems for
children because when addicted parents are addicted, locked up, or going away for treatment. What
happens to their children? This brings a whole new light to grandparents responsibilities and roles in
a family. When children haven't been formally removed from a home the grandparent who gets the
call is left with two options come retrieve the child or they will go into foster care. Grandparents are
faced with a difficult task, raising their grandchildren while their children are in jail, being treated,
or dead from overdose. Grandparents are called upon to take care of their grandchildren with little
resources, support, or warning. When the grandparent decides to take in their grandchild they
become a different kind of caregiver neither parent nor grandparent it's called kinship care. Formal
kinship care provides legal guardianship, monetary government assistance, court appearances, visits
from child protective services, or mandated caregiver training. That can be disrupting to a child and

A Grandparent And Grandchild
ABSTRACT This paper defines the challenges that both grandparents and grandchildren face when
they are involved in a skipped–generation household. Custodial grandparents face many obstacles
and stressors when they take on the role of caregiver to their grandchildren. The children also face
many difficulties when living in a household without their biological parents. This can be both a
rewarding experience but also very trying one for both grandparent and grandchild. With the help of
supportive systems, such as financial assistance programs and social support groups, the stress and
overwhelming feeling can be reduced.
Becoming a Custodial Grandparent:
The Physiological, Psychological, and Economical Effects Throughout history grandparents have
always played an important role in their family's lives and in the lives of their grandchildren. These
roles may have included caring for their grandchildren while parents worked and acting as a support
system for the entire family. Grandparents and grandchildren also share a special bond and
relationship. They teach their grandchildren about their cultural beliefs and help shape the child into
a successful adult. In recent years there has been a dramatic change in the roles that grandparents are
playing. More grandparents are taking on the responsibility of raising their grandchildren. This is
known as a "skipped–generation household" and is defined as households where the grandparents

My Grandfather is a shining example of what hard work can get you. Growing up, my Grandpa had
a very hard life, filled with hand–me–downs and a low food supply. Life was hard and bills were
high. Education wasn't a high priority in his family, so he found no reason to go on through high
school. He decided to get a job at a gas station, but after a while he thought long and hard about the
direction he wanted to go with his life and that he wanted his children to have all the opportunities
they wanted. That was when he and his brother came up with an idea, an idea that would morph into
a thriving business. They decided to start H&H Industries in Oak hill at first a small one room
building, then growing into a huge building and garage with profits soaring through the roof.
Through this my Grandpa has shown me that working hard can get you anywhere you want to go in
life. He has shown me how much hard work and determination mean. What it means to truly work
hard for something. I look up to my Grandfather in the sense that he started from nothing and went
so far. I try to live my life this way as well, working hard at school and at everything else I do in my
life. My Grandfather has made a lasting influence on my

Every person is in need of a home. It is a place that feels natural and welcoming. It instills a sense of

home. It is a place that protects them from the struggles and obstacles that life inevitably thrusts
onto people. It is a safe haven. For me this particular feeling is bestowed upon me every time I step

Grandparents Become An Important Figure For Many Children
Throughout growing up, grandparents become an important figure for many children. My
grandparents impacted my life enormously through teaching me things as I grew up. I remember my
Grandpa Farber impacting my life immensely, even though his time with me and my other cousins
lasted a few years to short. He always made me laugh and he remained there when I needed him.
Throughout his life and mine, he became the strongest and uttermost caring person that I knew. I
endured his life coming to an end at the age of seven, but I cherish every day I got with him.
Memories helped me to remember my grandpa through the great times we enjoyed and forget about
the tough year of him battling cancer. My Grandpa Farber became always a role model for me as I
started to grow up. A memory that comes to my mind would be the time that he helped me to color
in the lines. I would scribble outside of the lines when I colored in a coloring book. Believing that I
could stay in the lines became dense for me so I continued to scribble outside of them. Once my
grandpa realized that I colored outside of the lines, he thought that he could fix the issue by showing
me how to properly color. Considering that I was only three years old, my grandpa never gave up on
me and knew that he could encourage me to color right. Eventually I caught on and started to keep
my colors inside the lines and soon my pictures went from scribbles to masterpieces. At around the
age of four, I began to learn how to ride my bike.

Role Identity Conflict For Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Role Identity Conflict for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Throughout history, grandparents have played a part in the raising of their grandchildren. Most
usually this involved grandparents helping parents economically, physically, or emotionally but in
some cases such as death or abandonment by a parent; grandparents have been left the total care of
their grandchildren. In recent years, however, the trend of grandparents raising their grandchildren
has grown by exponential numbers. There is some evidence that this trend might be due to the rising
number of parents with substance abuse issues, child abuse and neglect, divorce, abandonment, etc.
The purpose of this study is to show the correlations between grandparents becoming custodial
caretakers for their grandchildren and the change of role identity within that relationship as well as
the increase in parenting roles the grandparents will utilize in raising their grandchildren. Custodial
grandparents, as defined for this study, will include grandparents who have full legal and physical
custody of their grandchildren through a court order. This study will be conducted on a
representative sample of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren through the social service
system as well as grandparents representative of the general population who are not raising their
grandchildren. The study will be a comparative analysis of the differences in the roles each group
plays within their grandchildren's lives and

It is because even though we had a close kinship, our relationship is so unfamiliar that I did not have

my grandmother all had to leave home for something important. My mother told me: "All you need
to do are calling me if there is an emergency." Thus, I decided to kill my time by watching the
television which was only used when I came to the home. My grandfather got used to learning news
through the radio, but his worse hearing made it harder and harder. Then, my grandfather waddled
out from his room and turned off the television suddenly. He shouted, "Don't watch it for a long
time! It is bad for your eyes!" I actually only watched half an hour, but I sit there without saying
anything. We did not share any interesting topic to talk at this awkward time. My grandfather
snuggled on the sofa like a sleeping tiger, while I was too bored to use my tiptop to trace the shadow

about his time in the army. Experienced Big Famine, Cultural Revolution, and Students Revolution,

Grandparents: A Multigenerational Study
The strong emotional bond between grandparents and grandchildren (Bengston,2001), has become
of great interest in today's literature. As life expectancy has increased, so have the amount of
multigenerational families (Barranti, 1985). Grandchildren are therefore able to have a relationship
with their grandparents for longer. Positive health and well–being outcomes for both grandparents
and grandchildren are able to be observed in this relationship. For the purpose of this essay, health
will be defined as mental health including the absence of depressive symptoms. Psychosocial
development and well–being of children aged between 11 and 16 will be discussed. No definitive
aged grandparents will be observed however, child (11–16), adolescent (18–23) and adult

As a child, I was raised in an uppity, wealthy family. I was the child of the family failure. My

wall, to stave off the winter chill was a wood–burning stove, collecting wood to burn a task for the

My great grandparents mean the world to me and it was very hard for me when they started to

nice and awesome people, a lot of people looked up to them, including me. They lived in Indiana
which meant I didn't get to see them a lot but when I did it was the best times of my childhood.
When we would go over there, my cousins, my brother, and I would play with the stuffed animals
they had and we would hang out with family. One of my favorite memories of going down to visit
was going to see the campus of Notre Dame. My grandparents have created a name for the Berges

Id. at 67. The Court stated that the statute allowed the judge to "disregard and overturn a fit
custodial parent concerning visitation whenever a third party affected by the decision files a
visitation petition, based solely on the judge's determination of the child's best interests". Id.
The Court, which characterized the case as involving nothing more than a simple disagreement
between [the trial court] and the mother concerning the child's best interest, held that the visitation
order was an unconstitutional infringement on the mother's fundamental right to make decisions
concerning the care, custody, and control of her children, and the courts failure to accord the
mother's determination any material weight. The court relied on three factors in reaching its holding.
First, there is a presumption that fit parents act in the best interest of their children, and the
grandparents did not allege and the court did not find that the mother was an unfit parent. Id. at 68.
If a parent is fit, there is normally no reason for the state to inject itself into the private realm of the

of that parent's children. Id. (quoting Reno v. Flores, 507 U.S. 292, 304 (1993)). The second factor
surrounded the decisional framework used by the Washington state court in reaching its

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

  • 1. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Today many grandchildren are going to live with their grandparents because of death, divorce, incarceration, and bad parenting. The grandchildren mostly come from dysfunctional families and may have been exposed to sexual and physical violence and illicit drug and alcohol use from their parents. Many grandparents do not have a clue about how their life is fixing to change with raising their grandchildren and challenges that lie ahead. This research will look at the challenges grandparents face, the effects on the grandchildren, substance abuse, interventions, support groups, and public policy. • 2. Biography of Grandparent "I had an amazing life. I had wonderful husband I loved more than anything else is the world. I had six beautiful children, who gave me nine grandchildren, and the strength I needed throughout my life. I have regrets; but everyone does. I believe my life was wonderful because everyday I pray for my family and thank God for what he has given me throughout the years. The good times, and the difficult ones – everything was a blessing." Winnie, now 75 years old, believes she has been blessed everyday of her life. It sounded surprising after I interviewed her to hear how religious and optimistic she is about her life. You see, I knew her as my quirky grandmother – who used to crotchet dolls on top of soda bottles, or kiss a penny that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every Sunday, after church, her father would bring her and her siblings to the park near their house and play with them until her mother was finished making lunch for the family. Winnie's friends during her childhood were the "kids who were in her church and her neighborhood." She never remembered having her mother dislike any of her childhood friends; but emphasized that she spent the most of her time with her older sister Angela. Annie and Angela were best of friends growing up, always playing dress up and house. To this day, her and Angela have a strong bond despite living miles apart. In her teenage years in the 1950's, her mother and father never emphasized the importance of her schoolwork. They were still very strict religiously, but believed that the woman should raise children in the house [[relate to watching tv and seeing a commercial for her period and saying that's inappropriate on tv]] She was not allowed to date until she was eighteen. But, when she was fifteen, she met a boy in school that she had a crush on. Although she knew it was wrong, the boy and her started dating secretly. It was nothing serious, she remembers, "Going to the park and having him pick her flowers and kissing her hands." It was the first time she took interest in a boy, or that a boy had taken interest in her. Unfortunately, her older brother Gerard had heard about Annie having a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. My Grandparents Speech Many people only have the privilege of seeing their grandparents on birthdays and other holidays. Luckily for me, I see mine almost every week. My grandparents, specifically my mom's parents, have both played a large role in shaping me into the person I am today. My grandpa, or "Pa", especially, has been more of a father to me than my own. He has held an essential role in my life, and is continually shaping me each day. My grandpa is a strong–willed and old fashioned man. He likes to do things his way. In addition, he always works hard and provides for his family. Throughout the course of my rather short life, my grandpa has taught me many lessons. Here are three stories that stick out to me the most. They taught me to be adventurous, to work hard, and to get back up after failure. The whole family was there, as my grandpa decided to make a big purchase. He was buying a 2005 Chevy SSR convertible, and five year old me was ecstatic. After a long night of waiting for all the details to be worked out, the car was his. Me, being the bratty kid I was, jumped in and said, "I get the first ride!" On my first ride, I remember the roar of the engine. "That sounds like kitties purring." I said. My grandpa laughed and said, "You are right. Those are kitties!" I exclaimed, "Well then make those kitties purr!" He laughed and revved the engine as I stuck my hands out into the wind, laughing and yelling as I did so. The fun continued as we continued to laugh and yelled, "Faster! ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Video Analysis In the video "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren," they discuss the struggles of grandparents having to take on the parental role of their grandchildren because their grandchild's parents could no longer take care of them. The grandparents who chose to look after their grandchildren acknowledge the difficulties of raising their grandchild, but they still chose to go forth with their decision because they feel a sense of responsibility to look after their grandchildren when their parents are not in a positive position to look after their own children. An example of this reason in the video is when Mic, the founder of The Grandparent's Foundation, revealed that she began looking after her daughter's children because her daughter was involved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mic conveys the hardships of raising a grandchild when she states that she must work two jobs in order to provide food for her family because the organization she founded does not provide enough income. Mic's worries of having to provide enough money to support her household has notably negatively affected her mental health due to the number of responsibilities that has been put on her. This is a common situation for many grandparents who look after their grandchildren as Burke reveals that many grandparents "report feeling emotionally drained, depressed, and worried about what will happen to the children if their own health fails" (Burke 435). Also, the issue of grandparents raising grandchildren relates to the generativity versus stagnation stage of psychosocial development. This is due to the fact that in this psychosocial stage "adults focus more intently on extending commitments beyond oneself and one's life partner to a larger group––family, community or society" (Burker 423) when adults in middle adulthood become generative. These qualities of generativity are easily found in Mic and the other grandparents that were interviewed in the video because they have made the selfless decision to take on the responsibility of caring for their grandchildren in order to give them a better future although they should be retiring at this point in their ... • 5. Descriptive Essay About My Grandparents House Herman, the part of rural Minnesota no one even knows exists, population 426. The worn down elementary school, the old elevator, post office, liquor store, and bank. That's it. That's all that exists in the tiny town. Broken, crumbling roads. Houses falling to pieces, lawns overgrown with weeds. Everything falling apart. Except there's my grandparents' house. The tall, wooden brown house perfectly put together on the edge of town, towering over everything that used to be. A balcony sits to the north, overlooking what's left of the city beyond it. Huge, triangular windows look out towards the golden fields and trees to the south, allowing the sun to light up the entire house with the warm, glistening rays of sunshine. The kitchen windows ... It is everyone else who doesn't have a family to celebrate with that night too (which only goes to prove the type of people my grandparents are). You can literally almost feel the love and happiness in the air. Looking back at all my life's memories, it is clear that this is my favorite. 18 days of the past 18 years stick out to me the most. It is impossible not to take a moment to yourself and just think about how incredibly blessed you are to be a part of something so pure and happy in this crazy world. Everything just feels right. I could be having the worst day of my life, and I know that the moment I walk through that worn front door that I am going to be okay and that I am loved more than anyone deserves to be loved. My grandparents are good people. They are kind, smart, wise, and everything that's good in this world. There is not a soul who could argue otherwise. It is home. It is happiness. It is my grandparents' house. But I think it goes beyond just my grandparents' house. It is more about the ideas, morals, and lessons I've learned within it. • 6. Creative Speech On Grandparents The first time of many "No having people over Hailea! I have people watching the house." "Of course I'm not going to have anybody over Dad...I'm not stupid, I know we have a security system." "James, we need to go...our flight leaves at 4 o'clock and it's already 3 o'clock!" "Okay" "All right well you two have fun! Call me when your flight lands." "We will, give your Dad and I hugs before we leave." After giving both Mom and Dad hugs and kisses goodbye, I thought to myself this weekend is going to be great! After I got inside I caught myself smiling like an idiot. I texted Jordan telling him that my parents just left, and reminded him to use the back gate and just walk up to my room. He already knew about their long weekend cruise and how I will be home alone. The best thing is no siblings because they are at our Grandparents house. Mom and Dad left me home alone to take care of the animals. Obviously seeing that as a opportunity to break the rules! My speaker was playing my awesome playlist of music I made. The bathroom mirror began to fog up while I got undressed to get in the shower. 20 minutes of me singing and I finally decided to get out. I went to my bedroom and put on my favorite and most comfortable dress. Then proceeded to dry my hair. After drying my hair the song "Fergalicious" came on. Of course that meant a dance break! • 7. My Grandparents ' House Is My Heaven My grandparents' house is my heaven since I was born there; I didn't moved out with my parents until I was seven. My grandparents live in an old apartment which is surround by orderly and crowded houses that has aged through time. As I mentioned, the apartment they lived in is special and honorable since it was provided by the company that my grandparents worked with. "Paper Machinery Company", as what my grandfather said when I asked him where he works, with a proud smile stapled on his face. Three blocks away from the building where my grandparents work their hearts out is where you'll find my heaven. It is surrounded with a variety of colorful fruits, and freshly picked soil stained vegetables. I could still remember the strong smell of the salt stinking fish when I passed by that crowded market. My family who comes from my father's side worked there three generations ago. My grandfather was a senior engineer; this house was given by the factory director as a gift. From the first floor to fifth, every family member that lived in that building had a similar but different background. Some of the family members were leaders from the factory, and some were designers. When I was young, I spent most of my days at my grandparents' house when my parents went to work for a living. I always watch people hurriedly walk out from their doors with different colors, and rushed into the narrow small gates, and get on the bus. They never forgot to wear their smile as they leave their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. My Experience With My Grandparents My entire life I have lived with or in close proximity to my grandparents. I have had countless conversations with them through my life. But the older I noticed our conversations diminishing and becoming less frequent due to my busy schedule. When this assignment was introduced to me, I jumped at the opportunity to interview and reconnect with one of my grandparents. I decided on interviewing my grandmother because she is comfortable with english and our native language, tagalog. By speaking to someone I am blood related to and grew up with, I automatically gained a sense of rapport. If I interviewed a stranger, I feel it would have been more difficult to gain their trust. Geertz explains in his article Daedalus, how him and his wife struggled to gain the acceptance of a certain group of people and of how one day they finally gained their trust. He states, "In Bali, to be teased is to be accepted. It was the turning point so far as our relationship to the community was concerned, and we are quite literally "in"" (Geertz, 2005:59). While conducting my interview, one tip I used that Joseph Hermanowicz suggested was to "Play the innocent sometimes," (Hermanowicz, 2002:486). Since the interviewee was a relative, this tip was used many times throughout the interview. At many points during the interview my grandmother would say something like, "I've told you this many times already." Although this was true, I noticed playing the innocent and convincing her to retell me those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Living At Your Grandparent 's House Growing up in your grandparent's house is a wish that many kids have. As a kid your grandparents are the people who tend to spoil you rotten and let you do things that your parents wouldn't let you do. What young kid wouldn't find that appealing? I know I did, however, my wish happened to come true. I grew up in my grandparent's house until I was about six years old. I remember hearing the six o'clock siren which meant it was time to eat, or seeing the street light come on which meant it was time to come in for the night. I walk around and see empty lots where houses once were. I notice new buildings in place of old ones and new people rather than the regulars. From time to time I make my way back to Fessenden North Dakota to visit with my grandparents. In doing so, I have witnessed many changes to not only the town but to their house. While living at my grandparents I had a few close friends. My best friend even lived right down the street from my grandparent's house in a motel that her father owned. As I drive down that same exact street I no longer see the flashing open sign that was once lit. It looks like an abandoned, haunted building. I pull into the drive way and notice something strange. It's very noticeable but strange at the same time. Not only is the house painted a more white color other than the old blueish one, there is a four–teen foot garage staring me right in the face. I get out of my car and soon realize the front door has moved. Where it once was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Speech On Grandparents Nani and Pop have had many unforgettable and defining moments in our lives together. But becoming grandparents six times (so far!) is right at the top of the list! We know that you have heard stories about how excited we were to become your grandparents. I immediately nicknamed myself POP, and shouted about it to the world. We fell head–over–heels in love with each of you the moment we met you, and we couldn't wait to begin sharing adventures with you. And that love grows stronger and deeper with each passing day. What a joy it has been for us to watch you all as you have grown, and to see you develop your own unique personalities. And we hope that you all know how important it is to us to always be here for you, and to share with you some valuable lessons that will help you as you go through life. We wish – perhaps more than you will ever know – that we could promise you a life free from pain, temptation and suffering. But we know all too well from the personal experiences of living life in this world that this will not be true for you. You will face many challenges. As a matter of fact, the Bible tells us that, as Christians, we will be continually engaged in a spiritual battle, that we are at war! The Apostle Paul tells us (Ephesians 6:13) to "take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm." In the next few verses, he describes the various pieces of armor that God has given Christians to help ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He said, he didn't like living with his grandparents, but he had no choice after his parents died in a fire that destroyed their home," Andrew said, staring at the TV unable to believe what he was hearing as the announcer repeated the information. Grandparents influence their grandchildren both directly, through face–to–face interaction, and indirectly, by providing emotional support (Doucette–Dudman 98). When a grandchild confronts a problem and knows that her grandparents are there to support her, she is indirectly influenced by their emotional support. Grandparents also serve as role models to their grandchildren. A role is defined by the "set of expectations, rights, obligations, behaviors, and duties associated with a particular status position" (Newman 592). Grandparents have a variety of roles that they play in respect to their grandchildren. They are stress buffers, watchdogs, supporters, family historians, and much more. Children, often fearing punishment, do not want to go to their parents with their problems. Grandparents can indirectly teach children the lessons that they need to learn by joking and kidding with them, talking about growing up, giving advice, discussing problems, providing discipline, taking trips, teaching a skill or game, or talking about disagreements the child had with the parents (Doucette–Dudman 112). Parents seem to be more uptight with their children, perhaps because it is the first time they have ever had to be responsible for another human being's life. On the other hand, grandparents have already been through parenthood, making them more confident, and therefore, more relaxed in their attitude towards raising children (Kornhaber ... • 14. How Grandparents Are Assuming the Role as Caregivers In the absence of biological parents, grandparents may assume the role as the caregivers of their grandchildren. The absence of a biological parent may be due to incarceration, drug abuse, mental illness or military deployment (Yancura, 2013). Each of which disallow acceptable care from the biological parent which sometimes places the burden to care for the child on the grandparent. This absence is commonly known as custodial grand–parenting (Population Reference Bureau, 2011). In these circumstances the grandparent often takes the grandchild into care to avoid them going into foster–care. While this may be necessary for the children's safety, permanency, and well–being, this may also contribute to serious problems affecting the grandparent's own well–being. According to Yancura, the risk of physical, intellectual, or emotional stress becomes greater the longer a grandparent cares for their grandchild. It may be severely overwhelming for grandparents to meet the essential needs for a child's well–being when already at a point in life when their own health problems are at a rise (Barusch, 2013). Balancing care for oneself and for the grandchild becomes stressful. Barusch (2013) explains, often grandparents must sacrifice their own well–being and instead nurture the grandchild. However, among the difficulties, grandparents still may feel an obligation to care for their grandchildren. Census (2010) reports a growing number of grandchildren in the United States are living ... Taking care of a grandchild may put the grandparent's future in jeopardy. Some grandparents have to make job related sacrifices while grandparents who were comfortably retired deplete their savings to take help support their grandchildren. Taking on a parental roll has effects on a person's lifestyle and his or her relationship with friends and family. The extent of the effects depends upon the extent of child–care that is provided by the grandparent. Grandparents who are raising their grandchildren assume that when their children were grown, it would relinquish the role of raising children but now they are raising their grandchildren. Sometimes it makes the grandparent resentful (Driver et. al, 1997). Legal Issues There are numerous legal issues that complicate grandparents raising grandchildren. Living arrangements within these households are quite often fluid and informally arranged. Grandparents raising grandchildren are likely to move in and out of the grandparent caregiver role throughout their life depending on the needs of adult children and grandchildren (Lee, E. & LaVeist, 2005). Due to these types of living arrangements, grandparents who raise their grandchildren have no legal rights concerning their grandchildren. They may be viewed as "babysitters." By not having rights concerning the grandchild, the grandparent must abide by whatever

This place not only was always a safe haven for me, but also a spot to where I could just be free and relax from all obstacles life has thrown. The place I am talking about is my Grandmother 's house. As a child, my cousins and I would visit her and my grandfather. Coinciding with their home and personalities, their yard alone, was so full of life. Of course family were not the only people who were allowed to visit their home. Anyone who had problems at home, nowhere to go, or just wanted to be somewhere where there is peace and quiet were always and still are welcome. The reason to why my Grandparent 's home is so influential to me is because just like other things in my life, it shaped and molded me into the person that I am. Along with giving me insight to what my family is truly all about. One example would be that my grandparents still follow traditions of our ancestors, like preserving fruits and vegetables for example peaches, pears, and apples, and growing vibrant vegetable gardens. Another would be the wild life and vivid open space my grandparents had. Also, the stories, pictures, and history of our ancestors that were told and showed to us as children. These things, in general, are what is significant about my Grandparent 's home to me. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Joseph Biscoglio and Nieli Langer, in their academic journal "Grandparents Against Homework," promote to the readers that devoted grandparents can be of great assistance to their grandchildren in regards to homework. Biscoglio and Langer's purpose is to inform the audience of an ongoing debate over the impact of homework, or rather the lack thereof. Much of this debate is centered around the idea that homework is beginning to take over student's time to do other socially enriching activities such as sports, music, family, community, religion and even sleep. In the next section of their journal, Biscoglio and Langer refer to No Child Left Behind and their standards, and how this effects how much homework is given out. They spell out the idea that in order to keep up with the standards and to stay competitive, teachers will give more homework on topics that have not been taught. They say that "Homework has displaced real teaching and real learning during school time" (158). Before getting to the main point of their article, Biscoglio and Langer explain what less homework might look like. They say that in addition to helping with the children's health, "we could also be reducing children's and parents' stress levels and increasing positive mood levels..." (159). Grandparents raise their grandchildren, for their biological parents cannot care, or choose not to care the child that they born. Some common reasons are teenage pregnancy, divorce, drug or alcohol addiction, physical health issues, death of the parent, unstable home life, homelessness, child neglect or abuse, or one of the parents is in jail. In "The Real Reality" program, we saw two different examples; one was the two foster care youths that they moved into a foster family within less than an hour, for their mother won't be able to take care of them, because she was going to the jail. Second example was, the grandparents that were taking care of their two grandchildren, even though they were suffering with their bills, yet they were feeling themselves responsible for their grandchildren. According to (Langosch, 2012) "Grand parents generally step in when parents troubled lives – as a result of substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, family violence, or physical or mental illness threaten children's well–being". 2. My grandparents impacted my life enormously through teaching me things as I grew up. I remember my Grandpa Farber impacting my life immensely, even though his time with me and my other cousins lasted a few years to short. He always made me laugh and he remained there when I needed him. Throughout his life and mine, he became the strongest and uttermost caring person that I knew. I endured his life coming to an end at the age of seven, but I cherish every day I got with him. Memories helped me to remember my grandpa through the great times we enjoyed and forget about the tough year of him battling cancer. My Grandpa Farber became always a role model for me as I started to grow up. A memory that comes to my mind would be the time that he helped me to color in the lines. I would scribble outside of the lines when I colored in a coloring book. Believing that I could stay in the lines became dense for me so I continued to scribble outside of them. Once my grandpa realized that I colored outside of the lines, he thought that he could fix the issue by showing me how to properly color. Considering that I was only three years old, my grandpa never gave up on me and knew that he could encourage me to color right. Eventually I caught on and started to keep my colors inside the lines and soon my pictures went from scribbles to masterpieces. At around the age of four, I began to learn how to ride my bike. ... • 34. Role Identity Conflict For Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Role Identity Conflict for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Throughout history, grandparents have played a part in the raising of their grandchildren. Most usually this involved grandparents helping parents economically, physically, or emotionally but in some cases such as death or abandonment by a parent; grandparents have been left the total care of their grandchildren. In recent years, however, the trend of grandparents raising their grandchildren has grown by exponential numbers. There is some evidence that this trend might be due to the rising number of parents with substance abuse issues, child abuse and neglect, divorce, abandonment, etc. The purpose of this study is to show the correlations between grandparents becoming custodial caretakers for their grandchildren and the change of role identity within that relationship as well as the increase in parenting roles the grandparents will utilize in raising their grandchildren. Custodial grandparents, as defined for this study, will include grandparents who have full legal and physical custody of their grandchildren through a court order. This study will be conducted on a representative sample of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren through the social service system as well as grandparents representative of the general population who are not raising their grandchildren. The study will be a comparative analysis of the differences in the roles each group plays within their grandchildren's lives and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Grandparents And Grandparents The relationships between grandparents and grandchildren, to some extent, are often magical. That means you can discover something new and interesting every time you meet with them. My grandfather is a retired soldier with all characteristics a soldier should have–tough shell and tough heart. In my childhood memories, he seems like a familiar stranger. However, the precious time that I spent alone with my grandfather enabled me to gain insight about what kind of person my grandfather truly is and what influences he exerts on me until now. My grandfather did not play an intimate role in my life until he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Since I was a little girl, my grandfather never played with me or held me up. Instead, he was always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is because even though we had a close kinship, our relationship is so unfamiliar that I did not have the chance to see his physical and mental change brought by cancer. Spending time alone with my grandfather seemed like a challenge for both of us. However, this happened because my parents and my grandmother all had to leave home for something important. My mother told me: "All you need to do are calling me if there is an emergency." Thus, I decided to kill my time by watching the television which was only used when I came to the home. My grandfather got used to learning news through the radio, but his worse hearing made it harder and harder. Then, my grandfather waddled out from his room and turned off the television suddenly. He shouted, "Don't watch it for a long time! It is bad for your eyes!" I actually only watched half an hour, but I sit there without saying anything. We did not share any interesting topic to talk at this awkward time. My grandfather snuggled on the sofa like a sleeping tiger, while I was too bored to use my tiptop to trace the shadow of the television. My grandfather tried to say something to entertain me, thus, he then began talking about his time in the army. Experienced Big Famine, Cultural Revolution, and Students Revolution, my grandfather lived in a strong generation. In my grandfather's words, these tough experience were actually his happiest time but also brought him pains. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Grandparents: A Multigenerational Study The strong emotional bond between grandparents and grandchildren (Bengston,2001), has become of great interest in today's literature. As life expectancy has increased, so have the amount of multigenerational families (Barranti, 1985). Grandchildren are therefore able to have a relationship with their grandparents for longer. Positive health and well–being outcomes for both grandparents and grandchildren are able to be observed in this relationship. For the purpose of this essay, health will be defined as mental health including the absence of depressive symptoms. Psychosocial development and well–being of children aged between 11 and 16 will be discussed. No definitive aged grandparents will be observed however, child (11–16), adolescent (18–23) and adult grandchildren (32 years) will be focused upon. Results were taken from 328 multigenerational families across seven waves between 1985– 2004.Participants were selected from the US Longitudinal Study of Generations (374 grandparents and 356 adult grandchildren). The mean age of grandparents was 78 compared to grandchildren's average age of 32. Affinity, contact, functional exchange, familism and grandparent health were measured at each wave to determine levels of solidarity (amount of unity or agreement between two individuals). All independent variables were measured using self–administered scales. For example, affinity was measured using a six item scale in response to statements (1 not at all and 6 extremely well). • 37. My Grandparents As a child, I was raised in an uppity, wealthy family. I was the child of the family failure. My Grandparents raised me. I was the child of the youngest and most enabled of the 11 kids my grandparents had. My father was a meth addict and my mother was selfish who was more concerned with her image and social life than her children. My grandmother loved me because she had children one after the other. By the time she was a master parent, all of her children had left the nest. With empty nest syndrome, she was all too happy to accept her name sake into her life and raise a little girl that was did not include an army of screaming children on top of the small infant she was handed. My grandmother never realized the amount of favoritism she displayed caused me a terrible childhood by my relatives. I was abused verbally and physically due to jealousy of her adult children and her other grandchildren just followed the example. My father, due to his drug addiction was not respected or treated as a parent. He was not allowed an opinion, at all. They began to make claims that were false, including an opinion I had mental health issues. One of my uncles had adopted a son with his previous wife and had been raising him fine until his divorce to my previous aunt due to his adultery with my current aunt. • 38. My Grandparents And Great Grandparents Pouring rain on the lush green foliage of Southwestern Mississippi marked my birthday; born April 3, 1938, on Poplar Hill Plantation in Jefferson County, Mississippi, the eighth of thirteen children. My parents, Willie Jackson and Sarah Whitney Jackson spent their entire lives in Jefferson County, born, baptized, married in 1926, died and their final resting place, the Poplar Hill Cemetery behind the church. Family stories of the experiences during the Civil War and reconstruction, seldom talked about, the guilt of beatings, the shame of miscegenation, the humiliation of these events became the secrets to keep. Consequently, families who suffered through those ugly times, did not speak of them and did not want the children to hear those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Farming was our life, generation to generation, once a farmer always a farmer, what we knew was working in the fields of Poplar Hill, working from sun up until dark, we knew little else. In the spring, planting and then you go to school, the fall harvesting first and then school. My school was a small building of about 900 square feet, a two–room school house, with a moveable wall in the center, it divided the grades first through fourth and grades fifth through eighth. Along the outer wall, to stave off the winter chill was a wood–burning stove, collecting wood to burn a task for the younger children, the older students oversaw keeping the fire going during class time. Homespun benches, no desks, no books (from first grade through fourth grade) pencils, paper, we had none, we did have an hour for lunch (that's if you had one), and then back inside to learn. Comfort at school was not paramount, we sat on benches made of hard wood, of course a desk was out of the question. Lunch time was great, except for the students who did not have a lunch, my older siblings remembered having little or nothing for their lunches. Lunch for me was a biscuit with preserved fruit or a boiled sweet potato, maybe a hard–boiled egg, once we finished eating there was time for play, recess in the front yard of the school, if you had a ball we played catch, hide–n–seek, tag, if you had a piece of rope we jumped rope, maybe a game of tag, and we made up ... • 39. My Great Grandparents My great grandparents mean the world to me and it was very hard for me when they started to become sick. They have inspired me to be the best I can be and to never give up. They were very nice and awesome people, a lot of people looked up to them, including me. They lived in Indiana which meant I didn't get to see them a lot but when I did it was the best times of my childhood. When we would go over there, my cousins, my brother, and I would play with the stuffed animals they had and we would hang out with family. One of my favorite memories of going down to visit was going to see the campus of Notre Dame. My grandparents have created a name for the Berges family there and now since they both died, Notre Dame is one of the only places I have left of them. Without knowing my great grandparents I don't know who I would be today. My great grandpa was a very smart guy. He was the brains of our family. One thing that always makes me feel good is that my family believes that i'm taking after my grandpa with the brains because we share a lot of the same traits. For example we both love to read and we both love history very much. My great grandfather has helped to to become who I am today by being a role model for me and inspiring me to be succeed in not only academically but in life. Grandparent Visitation To: From: Date: June 10, 2004 Subject: Grandparent's Visitation MEMORANDUM Based on the limited facts, the Johnson Superior Court should, at the least, modify the Agreed Entry between the parties that, among other things, granted Catherine McHugh (hereinafter the "grandmother") visitation of the minor child Christopher A. Cronin (hereinafter the "child"). There is an issue as to whether the grandmother is entitled to visitation rights to the minor child and whether the bad relationship between the Alice Cronin (hereinafter the "mother") and grandmother is a consideration in determining the child's best interest. The Court stated that the statute allowed the judge to "disregard and overturn a fit custodial parent concerning visitation whenever a third party affected by the decision files a visitation petition, based solely on the judge's determination of the child's best interests". Id. The Court, which characterized the case as involving nothing more than a simple disagreement between [the trial court] and the mother concerning the child's best interest, held that the visitation order was an unconstitutional infringement on the mother's fundamental right to make decisions concerning the care, custody, and control of her children, and the courts failure to accord the mother's determination any material weight. The court relied on three factors in reaching its holding. First, there is a presumption that fit parents act in the best interest of their children, and the grandparents did not allege and the court did not find that the mother was an unfit parent. Id. at 68. If a parent is fit, there is normally no reason for the state to inject itself into the private realm of the family to further question the ability of the parent to make the best decisions concerning the rearing of that parent's children.
