2. An event that shows my theme would be
when we find out that Job has a stack of
money hidden. This shows us that he has
a plan. That he is trying to survive
considering the circumstances of domestic
violence
3. Task Two
Characters
Job Jeffries – He is kind of lonely, takes the
blame for most things
Jobs mother – His mother is selfish, rude
and mean to her son. She’s also a bit of a
slag
Jobs mothers partner – Abusive, Rude, Drug
addict, thinks he’s better
Luke– Kind hearted, concerned, Obedient, A
good friend, caring, smart, better off than
Job
Crisis
The Crisis Job is in would be his life at home. He
leads a relatively hard life at home facing
things like abuse and a mother who is a
frequent drug user. He doesn’t have many
options or anywhere else to go. He feels like
he isn’t good enough so he acts out and
pretend he doesn’t care or have emotion. He
is mostly alone and this is his crisis. But his
crisis is mostly at home.
How he coped
Job coped with his crisis through the help of his best
friend. His friend helped him get through it. He
also put a large amount of money away for
himself for when he wanted to get away. This
shows he had a plan and that this plan of
freedom may have helped him make it through.
In the end he gets away from his household
crisis by fleeing and making his own life.
The lesson
We learn a lot about the type of person he is through
the text. We learn that he is a survivor and a
fighter. That he is willing to go to extreme
lengths (being blowing up the house) to survive.
We learn that he is smart but a very good
pretender because like his principle said it takes
a lot of skill to get just enough wrong to be the
lowest in his class but enough right too pass. We
learn that he can be secretive about his life at
home and that he doesn’t like sharing it. We
learn that he cares about his friend. Job was a
very tactical character and a SURVIVOR.
4. Compare & Contrast
TWWB
Both contain an
explosion
Both have violence
In both stories there is
a time when the
characters are in a
conflict (conflict of
opinion for example)
Both stories have a
narrator
JOB
Domestic conflict
Involves a lot of
drug use
Has a smaller
amount of main
characters
Is mostly based
at home and
school
Takes place in
the middle of a
invasion
Involves armed
officials and is
between two
countries
Has a large
amount of main
characters
Is based in a rural
forest area (for
most of the story)
5. Task 5
The setting in this story is an abusive home
because most of the story is told about
how Job’s home life is
His home is . . .
- Not very clean there a cigarettes and
magazines lying around
- His home life is abusive
- The home smells of smoke
- There is a hole in the roof (where he crawls
up to his hidden money)
These examples are subtle hints that the home is
not in very good condition. People who sell
drugs usually don’t have homes that are in
good condition. This is a stereo type of
those types of people.
This setting has resulted in a negative attitude for
job. His mother does not believe in him or
that he is very smart. This shows through his
school work. He is not stupid but the terrible
place he lives in and his mother make him
believe he is.
If I were in this type of setting myself I could
imagine it would have the same affect. It
would cause a negative attitude and I would
not feel like I am worth much because my
family is not worth much
I feel that the author placed job in this setting
because it would make us understand the
fact he is unhappy and gives imagery of a
messy character who is not very well off. The
authors intention could have been that he
wanted us to see how he was from a bad
place so people thought he was a bad person
(his friends father for example)
6. Protagonist
The agonist of this short story is Job because people feel bad for
him. They empathize
Job
- Lonely
- Sad
Job had been quiet all day. He slunk off after the final bell
- Mistreated
He had his shirt pulled up and was inspecting his skinny belly. It was
a mass of bruises, interspersed with red craters the diameter
of burning cigarettes
- Undermined
- Underestimated
I know that you aren’t as stupid as you want to look. You know
how? Job, you manage every year to be dead bottom of your
class, but never bad enough to be held back. And that’s not
easy. In fact, it’s damn difficult. You see, Job, to judge it that
fine, to get it that right, you need to know all the answers.
Antagonist
The antagonist is jobs best friend. He is not in hard circumstances
so people do not feel as bad for him.
Luke
- Obedient
Job, I promised Dad I wouldn’t hang around with you.’
- Smart
- Helpful
- Caring
That day at school was misery. I knew what I had done.
- Loyal
‘Luke,’ he said, ‘Don’t tell anyone.’
‘Sure,’ I said.
‘I mean it,’ he said. ‘Not anyone.’
‘Sure,’ I repeated. And I did owe him, over and over again.
Every time there was
trouble at school, Job took the blame.
7. Theme study
Survival
- Job
- Jobs mother
Job is trying to survive his home
life, in the end he does this by
escaping
Jobs mother is trying too survive
in the world. She sells crack
too make money so perhaps
she’s not educated or qualified
enough too get a real job
Overcoming Adversity
- Job
Job is also used in the second
theme where he is overcoming
adversity. This being his life at
home because it is abusive.
