2. ❖ Alcoholic Beverages
Alcoholic beverages are liquid obtained through
the fermentation of a sugar containing liquid.
There are many members of the alcoholic family,
but ethyl is the one which concerns us the most as
it is the principal alcohol to be found in all
alcoholic beverages.
3. ❖ Types of Alcoholic Beverages
• Wine
• Beer
• Brandy
• Whiskey
• Rum
• Gin
• Vodka
• Liqueurs (IMFL and Country Liquor)
4. ❖ Packaging Of Alcoholic
Beverages
Packaging Functions
• To preserve and protect the product.
• To transport the product.
• To make the product more attractive for the client.
• To publish the brand.
• To identify the product from other.
5. ❖ Packaging Material : What It
Does
• Containment
• Protection
• Preservation
• Convenience
• Presentation
• Environmental responsibility
6. ❖ Glass As a Primary
Packaging Material
We can use Glass as a primary packaging material. Glass is
“Generally rated as Safe (GRAS)” and is graded safe by the U.S.
Food & Drug Administration. The basic benefits of glass as a
primary packaging material is as follows –
• Best barrier protection
• Best preservation
• Best presentation
• Best convenience
Glass Bottles
7. ❖ Metal Cans As a Primary
Packaging material
The notable reasons which give support to the metal cans as
a primary packaging material is as follows –
• Hermetic seal
• Light-proof
• Lightweight
• Recyclable
• Unbreakable
• Formability and decorative potential
Metal Cans
8. ❖ Plastics As a Primary
Packaging material
• Plastics are fluidic in nature and also moldable to make different types of
sheets, shapes and structures.
• Flexible in nature.
• Light weight.
• They have wide range of physical and optical properties.
• Plastics are heat sealable.
• It is easy to print on plastic.
• Integrated into production processes where the package is formed, filled,
and sealed in the same production line.
9. Disadvantages of Plastics: Variable permeability to light, gases,
vapors, and poor barrier properties. Low molecular weight plastics are not
durable. Reuse and recycling properties are also limited.
Disadvantages of Metal Cans: Cost of the metal is very high
compared to other metals. Inability to be welded, which renders it useful
only for making seamless containers.
Glass is durable, impermeable and also hygienic. In hygienic and safe glass
packaging, premium products remain completely fresh and retain their
true flavour over long periods. Because of having good barrier protection
properties glass materials dominates over the other packaging materials.
10. For Wines –
The most common form of packaging used for wines is the glass
bottles sealed with natural cork. Since wines are affected by
sunlight, the bottles usually used are of coloured glass.
For Beers –
The traditional packaging media for beer is the glass bottle sealed
with a crown closure. Metal cans mainly aluminium cans are used in
beer packaging. Recent development is the use of PET bottles for
packaging of beer.
For Whisky, Brandy, Rum, Vodka –
These drinks have different alcohol percentage. Because of their
high alcohol percentages, these liquors are mostly packed in glass
bottles so that they can be kept for an infinite time after opening.
Now-a-days PET bottles are implemented in this field.
11. ❖ Smart Packaging Techniques
of Alcoholic Beverages
▪ Augmented Reality
▪ QR Code
▪ NFC-enabled Packaging
12. ▪ AUGMENTED REALITY
Augmented reality (AR) is a Image Recognisation Technology. With the
help of advanced AR technology the information about the product and
surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive. This information
can be virtual or real.
14. ▪ QR Code : the smarter way
QR code is a machine generated code on implementation of
which a consumer can access a factsheet containing detailed
information including technical data on the content and
complementary food suggestions.
16. ▪ NFC - ENABLED PACKAGING
NFC (Near Field Communication) is a set of protocols that enable
electronic devices to establish radio communication by bringing
them within 10 cm or so of each other. NFC has the advantage of
being cheap, flexible and not requiring an app. NFC chips and tags
can easily be incorporated into a mobile device.
Advantages :-
• Ideally suited for simple systems
• High-volume low-cost manufacturing
• Wide range of functions – sensors, displays, memory, antennas etc.
18. ❖ Conclusion
The primary purpose of alcoholic beverage packaging must
continue to be maintaining the safety, wholesomeness, and
quality of drinks.. The impact of packaging waste on the
environment can be minimized by prudently selecting
materials and reviewing expectations of packaging in terms of
environmental impact. Knowledgeable efforts by industry,
government, and consumers will promote continued
improvement, and an understanding of the functional
characteristics of packaging will prevent much of the well-
intentioned but ill-advised solutions that do not adequately
account for both pre-consumer and post-consumer packaging
factors.
