This document provides instructions for an extra credit journal assignment. Students are asked to choose a poem from a list of poems written by other students describing their backgrounds using images. They are then asked to create their own journal page using the images from the poem, including a collage, newspaper clippings, and color. The assignment is due on November 30 with no exceptions and will replace any missed journal grade if completed.

I am from the land that struggles for freedom. I am from old pictures
I am from the rice field, water buffaloes and cows. and hand sewn quilts.
I am from the place where I am from the Yerba Buena
Blood floats like rivers. to the old walnut tree that is no more.
Innocent souls are trapped under the ground. I am from carne con chile
Dead bodies haven't yet been buried. to queso con tortillas.
A beautiful barn becomes a cemetery. I am from farmers and ancient Indians
to the frijoles and sopa
It wasn't supposed to be like this. they ate.
I am from the place I hold now only as a memory. Lurdes Sandoval
I am from a family with hearts like stones.
Cang Dao
I am from bobby pins, doo rags, and wide tooth I am from Aztlan
combs. where many battles and wars were fought.
I am from prayer plants that lift their stems I am from the strength and courage of the Aztecs
and rejoice every night. who died for our freedom.
I am from traditions and customs
I am from chocolate cakes and deviled eggs from posadas and quinceñeras
from older cousins and hand-me-downs to día de la muerte and buena suerte.
to "shut ups" and "sit downs"
I am from the blood of my ancestors,
I am from Genesis to Exodus, the dreams of my grandmother,
Leviticus, too. the faith of my mother,
church to church, pew to pet and the pride of my culture.
I am from a huge family tree that begins with dust I am from the survivors.
and ends with me.
