Where I am From Poem

 1. 1. Ashley Bell
5th period
11-24-10
Cherokee Daughter
I’m from a land that flows with crops and herds of bison
From a place where everyone has their own special place in the tribe
I am from living in tepees with many people
With this house we must travel with quite often
I’m from a nation divided into separate tribes
From gathering with my entire family in one small tepee
From fires to keep us warm and used to prepare our next meal.
I am from gathering around open fires with lots of dancing and merriment
From medicine men and match makers
I’m from the eagle as my symbol of life
From times of happiness suddenly turning into times of hardships
Mostly when our crops failed and people would starve
I am from the Appalachian mountains all the way down to the Cumberland Basin
I’m from the land of my forefathers
From lands passed down and invaded by foreigners
I am from staying with my mother while my father left for the daily hunt
From watching the men work in the fields, and helping mother cook and clean
I’m from watching after the little ones while mother worked and father went into the field
From making upo games just to keep the little ones quiet
I am from times of sadness and fear once the seasons changed
From days waiting for weather to clear in order to find food
I’m from days spent just watching mom and learning how to work
From finally becoming a woman and helping more with my mother
I am from the decent summers and terrible winters with little food and warmth
From lying next to the fire huddle together with my brothers and sisters just to stay warm
I’m from a dwindling population because of illness and food shortages
From hardships that everyone suffered tremendously from
I am from worshiping the gods of the land and my people
From thanking the gods with celebration and praise for our accomplishments
I’m from foreigners attacking us and capturing some of us
From running to save our lives from torture or even death
I am from being caught by evil men and forced to work
From traveling for days without any break and most of the time no food at all
I’m from the Trail of Tears
From losing those that were dear to me because of this horrid trail we were forced to travel
I am from learning to defend myself and my brothers and sisters
From struggling to hold on to life as I knew it
I’m from despair and fear for those who are still alive if we will live longer
From my life changing before me never to be the same again
Now after we reach the end of this journey most of us have passed
But now we are faced with what lies ahead if we are freed or held captive
Today most of us live on reservations trying to remember what life used to be like before
We have better houses and no longer have the fear of invasion
Most remember where they are from like me
I’m from life as I knew it to now living how people want me to live
But I will always be a Cherokee Daughter
