Strong cognitive abilities are usually considered a very important and positive trait to seek when
hiring new employees. However, one police department decided not to higher those who scored
too high on a cognitive skills exam on the grounds that people who are too intelligent will not be
satisfied with their job as a police officer and will end up quitting (Naish, 2013). This of course
is a controversial policy that resulted in at least one lawsuit.
For this assignment we will be looking at individual characteristics that may predict job
satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job performance for police officers. Being a police
officer is a demanding job that required strong physical capacity, sharp mental capacity to deal
with difficult and life-threatening situations, and strong interpersonal skills in order to effectively
work with the communities they protect and serve. The issue of what traits to look for in police
officer recruiting is a controversial one.
Review the background materials on individual traits, personality, and attitudes such as job
satisfaction and organizational commitment. Then read these articles on law enforcement
recruitment with the issues in the background materials in mind:
Naish, R. (April, 2013). Too clever by half. E. Learning Age, 8. [ProQuest]
Means, R., Lowry, K., & Conroy, D. (2011). Hiring: Background investigation, part 3. Law &
Order, 59(3), 12-13. [ProQuest]
Reaume, S. (2009). Improved hiring for child protective investigators. Law & Order, 57(2), 19-
20,22,24. [ProQuest]
Now suppose a police department has hired you as a consultant to come up with an exam to
assess personality and other traits of applicants to the department. The department is looking to
hire applicants who meet the following criteria:
Using what you
Solution
1.
Cognitive abilities should be the part of the exam as this would help to evaluate the mental
process of reasoning, remembering, understanding, and problem solving. These skills are very
important for the police officers. The police officers under critical situation have to analyze the
situation and formulate a response strategy. Thus, it should be a part of the exam to identify
whether the applicants have such lifesaving skills.
The requirement varies according to the requirement of the job. Higher cognitive abilities should
be hired as only interested candidates apply for the job. The department should not limit the
candidates with an upper bound. This may restrain the applicants to perform little lower than
their ability. Thus, the department should hire those who has higher cognitive abilities.
2.
Personality:
Personality is defined as the combination of qualities and traits that forms a distinctive behavior
of an individual. Personality is derived from the word persona and is build up of thoughts,
feelings and behaviors due to which each individual is different from each other.
Joint effects of Traits and Skills:
Various researches have been conducted to consider the joint effects of different traits and skills.
The term traitsrefer to a variety of individual attributes, including aspects of personality needs,
motives and values, whereas skills refers to the ability to do something in an effective manner.
These both are important for making decisions under stress::
The traits and skills increase the effectiveness of the officer but they are applicable differently in
different situations as they don’t guarantee effectiveness.
The emotional stability of the police officers can be analyzed under Neuroticism trait. This
evaluates the tendency to experience anger, anxiety, impulse control etc.
3.
Personality affects individual behavior:
An individual behavior is guided by the variety of individual differences and certain qualities
that influence or control his behavior.
Individual differences arise due to differences in personalities. Biological factors like family and
cultural influences the behavior of a person. The culture and environment in which the person
grows up determines the personality of that person.
Individual differences also arise between the persons of the same cultural group because every
person sees things from his/her own perspective. One act may be right according to one culture
or it may be unethical according to the other culture.
The traits that deal with such characters are Conscientiousness trait, Extraversion, and
agreeableness.
The tendency to be organized, self-discipline, acts dutifully, and aims for achievement are
analyzed under conscientiousness trait.
Extraversion analyzes the positive emotions and the ability to seek simulation in the company of
others.
Agreeableness analyses whether they are friendly and compassionate or analytical and detached.
