Virginia Tech Massacre Research Paper
One of the worst cases of failed reporting of mental health checks was the Virginia Tech Massacre, in
April 2007, where a Virginia Tech student named Seung–Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and
injured 17 others, then killed himself on the college campus in Blacksburg, Virginia ("Mental Health
Reporting"). Cho bought a gun despite going through two background checks through licensed gun
dealers and having a mental health history in the records that should have prevented him from
receiving a gun. Although Virginia had some background check laws at the time, certain cases were
masked from the system. But, this is not the only instance, in fact, there have been 102 mass
shootings in 2017 alone, from January 1st–April 18 ("Mission."). Though...show more content...

Giovanni, people turn to poetry "in times of stress" because "it goes to the heart of things." Poetry
replenishes the "emotional" void left during stressful times or after a crisis. For instance, when
Ms. Giovanni speaks to the grieving community at Virginia Tech after one of their students goes
on shooting spree in 2007, killing 32 students and wounding many others, she connects with the
audience by acknowledging that "We are sad today and will be sad for quite a while." She quickly
sets the mood with her word choice and shows the audience that she understands, shares, and
accepts their pain. Poetry reminds people of their struggles and informs her listeners, "We are
strong enough to stand tall," and "We are sad enough to realize, we must laugh again." These words
evoke an image of a strong school that will not allow an incident such as this to tear them down
permanently. Their valor and honor is too sturdy to

The Virginia Tech Massacre
Over two hours Seung Hui Cho roamed the campus of Virginia Tech University murdering
innocent students. Once again it took the shooter committing suicide for the violence to stop. The
police were little help in pursuing the shooter and stopping the killings from occurring. In 2007
Cho killed 32 teachers and students making it the deadliest school shooting in the nation's history.
(Massacre at Virginia Tech leaves 32 dead) At 7:15 am Cho went into a dorm and killed a female
and male student. He then went to his room sent a package and changed clothes before walking into
a building full of classrooms. Armed with two handguns he locked and chained doors close and went
room to room shooting and killing students. (Massacre at Virginia Tech leaves

Essay On Why I Chose Virginia Tech
I chose Virginia Tech for a few reasons which included The College of Natural Resources and
Environment, the Appalachian Mountains, and being known as Hokie. The college of Natural
Resources and Environment is nationally ranked and known worldwide for their academics and
field studies. Virginia Tech was one of the few colleges in the area that offered Wildlife
Conservation as a major and I was set on my major since freshman year of high school. My cousin,
Mark Jones, who is the head biologist of the Black Bear population for the East Coast attended Tech
and I am striving to follow in his footsteps. I enjoy how the programs is hands on and competitive to
all students in the program. I am alongside of students, graduated and not graduated, who...show

The support around the university is phenomenal and has made the adjustment easier. The
atmosphere of the school is unbelievable and still surprises me today with all it can offer. I am
part of the biggest freshman class Virginia Tech as ever had and I am truly honored to be part of
something so monumental. I am overwhelmed with the fact I get to call Virginia Tech my home
for the next four years and truly make a difference around campus. My academic goals for the
next four years are to make the dean's list and keep at least a 3.5 GPA. I hope to succeed above
and beyond in all my classes and stand out. My career goals are to work with Black Bears as a
Wildlife Biologist or possibly a game warden, I hope to soon find the right path for my upcoming
future. I aim to maybe add a minor in the upcoming year, however I am still debating. In the past, I
was an active member in various organization and clubs like Future Farmers of America, DECA,
Future Business Leaders of America, Community Service, and National Honor Society. I have
volunteered multiple hours around my community at basketball tournaments, food pantry's, blood
drives, and company

Virginia Tech Motivation
There are thousands of colleges and universities in the US, but for some reason I've gravitated to
making Virginia Tech my number one choice. My motivation for this may stem from my passion
of pursuing a career structured around engineering and fast cars, and I feels as if this school may
be the place where I can begin to achieve my goals. Virginia Tech is onecollege that offers tons of
courses in that field of study, which is great for a person like me who wants to learn as much as I
possibly can.
Another great thing about this school is that it offers access to a few different extracurricular
activities that I would be thrilled to take part in. Thanks to my enthusiasm for automobiles some of
the activities I look forward to are the Rally

Virginia Tech's Future Study
Since its opening in 1901, the Virginia Tech Central Steam Plant has played an integral part in
producing electricity for the university and the greater Blacksburg area; however, over the past 113
years, the plant has shifted its primary focus from producing electricity to producing steam and hot
water for the university. The plant, which uses a mixture of fuels including coal and natural gas, is
classified as a "cogeneration" or "combined heat and power" plant. Simply put, this means the
facility produces both electricity and steam/heat. Virginia Tech is one of the few universities in the
commonwealth that helps to serve the electrical needs of its surrounding community; moreover, it is
the only university that supplies the community via a...show more content...
This was just nine short years after Thomas Edison established the first power plant in the United
States, the Pearl Street Station in New York City ("Pearl Street Station"). Although Virginia Tech's
electric plant was the first collegiate electric plant in the Commonwealth of Virginia, it is now
joined by over 100 coal–fired boilers on 60+ college campuses nationwide. The Morgantown Energy
Facility, located just 1/4th of a mile from the West Virginia University, is one of the only other
coal–fired cogeneration in the United States. The plant uses bituminous coal and waste coal as its
primary fuel sources, and is able to output 68.9 MW of electricity. Comparatively, the Virginia
Tech plant, which focuses on steam production more than the Morgantown plant, is only able to
reach 6.5 MW at peak capacity. What the Central Steam Plant lacks in electrical output, it makes
up for in its strict emissions standards. In 2006, the Virginia Tech Central Steam Plant recorded
emissions equivalent to roughly 285,000 tons of CO2 and an extremely low 90 tons of SO2. The
West Virginia facility, on the other hand, reported over 650,000 tons of CO2 emissions and 850
tons of SO2 emissions. The WVU plant uses much more coal than the VT plant, which leads to
higher levels of CO2 and SO2 emissions. The baghouses and scrubbers on two of the Virginia Tech

"Where are you?" Morgan asked, doing her best to stay calm.
"Two–Eleven Norris Hall," the voice said so softly that it was obvious to Morgan that the person did

How safe do you feel when you attend school everyday? Many students and faculty don't really think
too much about school being a dangerous place; however, after a couple of school shootings had
taken place their minds and thoughts may have changed completely. On April 16, 2007, in the town

It wasn't long before Roy had noticed that Cho seemed to have some issues and suggested him to
go to the counseling center. Roy claimed that she had tried to explain to the board and faculty
members that there was a serious problem with Cho; however, nobody took notice to anything
she was saying. Next, On April 16, 2007, Cho Seung Hui, a student at Virginia Tech College,
apparently had nowhere else to turn in his life other than to go on a massive killing spree.
According to CNN News, a timeline of exactly what happened during the massacre was explained.
It all began at 7:15am in the West Ambler Johnston Hall, which houses close to 900 students, a 911
call was made claiming that two students had been shot. Between the hours of 7:30am and 9am
police and school board members discussed who on earth would possibly do something like this.
Shortly after the school began to send students notices via email to notify them of the shootings.
Around 9:45am another 911 call was made claiming that more shootings had taken place in the
Norris Hall and this time 31 students were killed including Cho, who shot himself after going on the
viscous rampage. Several messages were sent to the students of Virginia Tech notifying them of the
second shootings via email. Shortly after noon the president of the college released information that

Growing up in a household of six, there is a lot of competition, especially when you are the
middle child. My mother always says,"Focus on your education. Education is the one thing that
no one can take away. Take control of your life." This is what I'm doing now, I'm taking control of
the opportunities I am given. I am a highley eligable candidate because of my wonder for new
knowledge and my drive for more. Being an agressive and competitive athlete, I am easily excited
by challenging things that I face everyday, that's why I love the challenges that come with my school
curriculum. It makes you think, and I'm a thinker. I already have one college that I really want to go
to, but it is in Virgina and out of state tuition is a lot. I am planning on getting a ph.d in Data
analytics at Virginia Polyetich institute of technology, also known as Virginia tech. I have a teacher
that has a degree in engineering and she said that they're program is an excellent one, and that is
what I am initially looking for. With my degree, I would like to help not change, but re–mold the
world into something our ancestors never thought to even imagine.

Virginia Tech Shooting Essay
DATELINE: MAY 10, 2007, BLACKSBURG, VIRGINIA (US)– The tragic shootings at Virginia
Tech on Monday, April 16 were over by mid–day; for Tech's Office of Transportation and its
subsidiary Parking Services group, the challenges were just beginning.
Even as the department reeled from the loss of one of its own, Tech senior Jarrett Lane, mourning
took a back seat to dealing with an onrushing media horde.
Media: This is Bigger Than Columbine
"One of the media folks told us that, at the peak, this was bigger than Columbine [High School
shooting], bigger than O.J. [the O.J. Simpson murder trial], bigger than anything else from the
media's perspective that had ever happened in America," says Steve Mouras, director of Tech's
Office of Transportation & Records Management. "This was the largest media event of all time, they
said."...show more content...
His wife, who had joined him on the trip, summoned him to the television where they watched in
horror as CNN reported the deaths. After conferring by phone with Virginia Tech's Manager of
Parking Services, Richard McCoy, Mouras decided to return immediately to Blacksburg, catching the
first flight available.
The Media Swarms to the Story
Upon landing at the Roanoke Valley Airport later that afternoon, Mouras was shocked to see the
normally placid facility bustling, noting "...three fourths of the people in the airport were media. At
the rental car counter, there was a line of 30 people." It should have been a tip–off to what was
coming.
Most emergency plans anticipate the exodus of people from a calamity; few anticipate a flood into
its epicenter.
Yet this would be exactly the challenge the parking and transportation (P&T) professionals at Tech
would face for the next two weeks. "Our disaster plan centered around that which could normally be
conceived," Mouras laments. "What happened here was

Virginia Tech Security Analysis
With large–scale information leaks and system hacks of major companies and industry titans being
more heavily covered by the media and drawing public scrutiny, emphasis has been placed on the
need for tighter digital and physical security. Some organizations, such as Virginia Tech, have turned

security. As the standards for password and item based security, such as Identification Cards or
personal phone acceptance, have become more advanced, so to have the systems and techniques of

It can cost a company up to $10,000 to apply biometrics to a single door. However, if security is a
top concern for a company, this may be a worthy investment. A one–time fee of $10,000 security fee
to implement this technology might be more worth it to a company than risking the theft or

already been implemented at Virginia Tech's data center. The employee has to enter a passcode and
provide a fingerprint to access the door to the center. Behind the door over hundreds of thousands of

"We Are Virginia Tech" Speaking is form of art that can either be a natural gift or a practiced
talent. Much like there are several different ways a person can draw: cartooning, free hand, or
realistic, there are many ways in which a person can speak. Nikki Giovanni's speech "We Are
Virginia Tech" makes people cry, rejoice, and move on. A speech is one form of art that can
evoke these types of emotions from people. In Nikki Giovanni's poem "We Are Virginia Tech,"

she gives may help them connect with the loss some are experiencing. Speeches can affect people
in different ways, some speeches will inspire you, others will make you reflect on your own life,
some will teach you a life lesson, but Nikki Giovanni's poem was meant to bring together a group
of disheartened people. Giovanni's speech did not affect me as intensely as it did to the families
of the victims who actually saw her give the speech. Similar to whether you are seeing a photo of
a piece of artwork or seeing it in person, seeing or hearing a recording of a speech it will affect you
differently. Sontag says, "real art has the capacity to make us nervous" (Sontag 759). This speech
is meant to bring out the sadness, but also the hope for a better future that people are feeling.
Preston Risser said, "her poem brought out the hurt people were feeling and brought awareness to
the situation at hand." As seen in the video people are either crying after she is finished, or
standing up with a newfound inspiration to stand tall and put this tragedy in the past. The way a

Giovanni believes that poetry "balances" an empathetic void prevalent in American society. She
claims, "(America) is a quick nation," and that, "Your mother can die, and someone can say, 'you
really need to move on.'" She combats this in her poem as she says, "We are not moving on, we are
embracing our mourning." This statement expresses what the grief–stricken audience feels, but is
too afraid to say. It eases the burden when they know that someone else understands the pain they
are going through and that it is difficult to move on. Giovanni perceives her listeners as tough,
courageous, and resilient. She proudly proclaims, "We are strong, and brave, and innocent, and
unafraid," with a more hyper and secure tone than used before. She shows that poetry unites people
by emphasizing their strength in numbers. For instance, Nikki Giovanni constantly accentuates a
combination of action and unity words such as "we will" and "we are" that proves that the victims
have her and each other who will help them rebuild their lives. She then instills in her crowd a
victorious plea that will help them heal when she concludes, "We will prevail, we are Virginia

  • 1. Virginia Tech Massacre Research Paper One of the worst cases of failed reporting of mental health checks was the Virginia Tech Massacre, in April 2007, where a Virginia Tech student named Seung–Hui Cho shot and killed 32 people and injured 17 others, then killed himself on the college campus in Blacksburg, Virginia ("Mental Health Reporting"). Cho bought a gun despite going through two background checks through licensed gun dealers and having a mental health history in the records that should have prevented him from receiving a gun. Although Virginia had some background check laws at the time, certain cases were masked from the system. But, this is not the only instance, in fact, there have been 102 mass shootings in 2017 alone, from January 1st–April 18 ("Mission."). Though...show more content... For most people, somberness is not very alluring, but for those who have been through a traumatic event such as a school shooting, poems that begin in sorrow and conclude with hope are most fitting. These poems are sometimes used inside obituaries to help restore peace to a broken family. One poet whose poem heals people is Nikki Giovanni. In her, "We are Virginia Tech," she addresses a crowd who has fallen victim to a tragedy. Giovanni, people turn to poetry "in times of stress" because "it goes to the heart of things." Poetry replenishes the "emotional" void left during stressful times or after a crisis. For instance, when Ms. Giovanni speaks to the grieving community at Virginia Tech after one of their students goes on shooting spree in 2007, killing 32 students and wounding many others, she connects with the audience by acknowledging that "We are sad today and will be sad for quite a while." She quickly sets the mood with her word choice and shows the audience that she understands, shares, and accepts their pain. Poetry reminds people of their struggles and informs her listeners, "We are strong enough to stand tall," and "We are sad enough to realize, we must laugh again." These words evoke an image of a strong school that will not allow an incident such as this to tear them down permanently. Their valor and honor is too sturdy to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 4. Essay On Why I Chose Virginia Tech I chose Virginia Tech for a few reasons which included The College of Natural Resources and Environment, the Appalachian Mountains, and being known as Hokie. The college of Natural Resources and Environment is nationally ranked and known worldwide for their academics and field studies. Virginia Tech was one of the few colleges in the area that offered Wildlife Conservation as a major and I was set on my major since freshman year of high school. My cousin, Mark Jones, who is the head biologist of the Black Bear population for the East Coast attended Tech and I am striving to follow in his footsteps. I am part of the biggest freshman class Virginia Tech as ever had and I am truly honored to be part of something so monumental. I am overwhelmed with the fact I get to call Virginia Tech my home for the next four years and truly make a difference around campus. My academic goals for the next four years are to make the dean's list and keep at least a 3.5 GPA. I hope to succeed above and beyond in all my classes and stand out. My career goals are to work with Black Bears as a Wildlife Biologist or possibly a game warden, I hope to soon find the right path for my upcoming future. I aim to maybe add a minor in the upcoming year, however I am still debating. Virginia Tech is onecollege that offers tons of courses in that field of study, which is great for a person like me who wants to learn as much as I possibly can. • 6. Virginia Tech's Future Study Since its opening in 1901, the Virginia Tech Central Steam Plant has played an integral part in producing electricity for the university and the greater Blacksburg area; however, over the past 113 years, the plant has shifted its primary focus from producing electricity to producing steam and hot water for the university. The plant, which uses a mixture of fuels including coal and natural gas, is classified as a "cogeneration" or "combined heat and power" plant. Simply put, this means the facility produces both electricity and steam/heat. This was just nine short years after Thomas Edison established the first power plant in the United States, the Pearl Street Station in New York City ("Pearl Street Station"). Although Virginia Tech's electric plant was the first collegiate electric plant in the Commonwealth of Virginia, it is now joined by over 100 coal–fired boilers on 60+ college campuses nationwide. The Morgantown Energy Facility, located just 1/4th of a mile from the West Virginia University, is one of the only other coal–fired cogeneration in the United States. The plant uses bituminous coal and waste coal as its primary fuel sources, and is able to output 68.9 MW of electricity. Comparatively, the Virginia Tech plant, which focuses on steam production more than the Morgantown plant, is only able to reach 6.5 MW at peak capacity. What the Central Steam Plant lacks in electrical output, it makes up for in its strict emissions standards. In 2006, the Virginia Tech Central Steam Plant recorded emissions equivalent to roughly 285,000 tons of CO2 and an extremely low 90 tons of SO2. The West Virginia facility, on the other hand, reported over 650,000 tons of CO2 emissions and 850 tons of SO2 emissions. The WVU plant uses much more coal than the VT plant, which leads to higher levels of CO2 and SO2 emissions. Virginia Tech Shooting Essay DATELINE: MAY 10, 2007, BLACKSBURG, VIRGINIA (US)– The tragic shootings at Virginia Tech on Monday, April 16 were over by mid–day; for Tech's Office of Transportation and its subsidiary Parking Services group, the challenges were just beginning. Even as the department reeled from the loss of one of its own, Tech senior Jarrett Lane, mourning took a back seat to dealing with an onrushing media horde. Media: This is Bigger Than Columbine "One of the media folks told us that, at the peak, this was bigger than Columbine [High School shooting], bigger than O.J. [the O.J. The Media Swarms to the Story Upon landing at the Roanoke Valley Airport later that afternoon, Mouras was shocked to see the normally placid facility bustling, noting "...three fourths of the people in the airport were media. At the rental car counter, there was a line of 30 people." It should have been a tip–off to what was coming. Most emergency plans anticipate the exodus of people from a calamity; few anticipate a flood into its epicenter. Yet this would be exactly the challenge the parking and transportation (P&T) professionals at Tech would face for the next two weeks.
