Essay Methods for Assessing Students
Abstract
This article discusses the four methods I use for assessing students, which are questioning,
observation, student–teacher dialogue, and selected–response. Included, are explanations about the
author's prior knowledge of assessment, what I have learned regarding assessments, how this
knowledge transferred to the classroom, and its use in future classes.

If something should happen and a new instructor takes over the class, they will be able to use the
paper trail to help the students move forward. When I took over the class, I had to start from day one
and assess for myself because the previous instructor did not have a paper trail of student assessment
other than Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) scores. Although we
administer Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System tests at the end of every quarter, in
my opinion, these tests are not an accurate representation of students' abilities in Reading, Writing,
Listening, and Speaking. Daily classroom assessments more accurately represent a student's ability.
The two main learning targets for my class are knowledge and skills. To assess these two targets I
mainly use, student–teacher dialogue, teacher observation, and questioning. I use selected responses
to asses my students' knowledge by matching graphics to words–can the student recognize which
word goes with which graphic; however, I do not use selected responses to demonstrate skills
because it is impossible to measure a skill by means of a true/false or multiple–choice test. The only
way to assess skills properly is to see them demonstrated physically.

reaction to my class. Students come to school with so much baggage that if you only chose one day
a week, or four or five times a marking period to assess them, chances are, they may be having a bad

Since I was always off task and not being able to finish what I planned, the work was starting to bile
up, including school work and attending extracurricular activities. In order to overcome the
