Violence is one of the most problematic issues society faces today, and it has been increasing day
after day, in the streets of our cities. The most common description of what violence really is can be
given as negativity towards something or someone either through physical or verbal actions, which
often causes the victim to suffer pain. The different types of violence that exist in our multi–cultural
society are out–numbered, but the most evident ones are domestic, gang, sexual, and racial violence.
While violence can definitely be reduced, it will never be eliminated due to the nature of humans.

On October 24 2000, a news article headline read, "Gang wars 6 Dead". This event had taken place
in Etobicoke, and the news article contained sentences like "Six victims in six months" and
"calculated executions". It also contained terms like "Bloods" and "Crips". These terms and
sentences have officially crossed the border and have become all too familiar in Canadian cities.
In order to cut back this outlaw behaviour, we need to educate our youth about the ill effects of
gangs, drugs, guns, and should try to persuade them to instead make friends with those who accept
you for who you are and use all their time in doing something positive and proactive. As a result of
reducing and preventing gang violence, many cities have created special task forces and given
schools their own police officers.
Sexual violence is another form of violence that has plagued our cities. This crime involves violence
that is specifically sexual in nature, to which the victim does not give consent. According to 2005
statistics, 51% of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual violence. 6
out of 10 victims who reported being sexually violated were under 17. These numbers are alarming
and scary. It is extremely important to get rid of such sinister crimes in our communities because it
robs the victims of their innocence, self–esteem, confidence, and even trust in our society. The

Domestic Violence in Society Essay
The Women's Aid federation defines domestic violence as the physical, psychological, sexual or
financial violence that takes place within a family type or an intimate relationship, and forms a
pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour. It may involve partners, ex–partners or other relatives.
Though the more common view of domestic violence is that it is the behaviour of some disturbed
'sick' individuals.
However sociologists have questioned this, saying that it's far too widespread to be the work of just

Secondly police and prosecutors maybe somewhat reluctant to investigate, record or prosecute those
cases that are reported to them. According to David Cheal this reluctance is due the fact that the
police make 3 assumptions that cause them to be unwilling to become involved in the family. The
first assumption is that the family is private so access to it should be limited, secondly they see the
family as a good thing and so they tend to neglect the 'darker side' of it and thirdly its assumed that
the women is able to leave if she is suffering abuse and is unhappy, though this is not technically true
many women that suffer abuse are often financially dependant on their husbands and are actually

Violence is a social problem that increases over the years. Violence is not so much shown in
magazines and books as it is on television and the media. This does not mean that violence on
television is the only source for aggressive or violent behavior, but it is a significant contributor.
Children can also pick up violence from a parent or guardian at an early age. Peers are important in
a child's life. It has been psychologically proven that males are more aggressive than females.
Therefore, if a child's peers are being aggressive, their actions tend to be imitated.
American children watch an average of three to four hours of television daily, which can be a

Some people fail to see that they are being imitated and looked upon as a role model from those
younger than them. If a babysitter is listening to music that contains violent lyrics or profanity, they
should not be shocked if the child copies it. Parents' arguments are also taken in by the child.
Parents should try not to show violence towards each other when around a child. They should also
disapprove of the violent episodes in front of the children, stressing the belief that such behavior is
not the best way to resolve a problem.
A child's peers mean a lot to their attitude whether one wants to believe it or not. It blends in with
their need to fit in. Popularity is what one hopes and dreams for during their teenage years.
Therefore, children try to duplicate others actions. This factor may tend to lead to racial or sexual
stereotyping consequently making the child believe that anyone different from these characteristics
should be punished. This takes the child into the stage of what type of music to listen to as spoken
about before.
Everyday we are all caught in a losing battle, the challenge of our society to preserve safety for
children and protect them from violence and guns. The facts are that violence is everywhere, it is
impossible to ignore them. It even seems as though no one recognized this as their problem

Violence in today's society is at an all time high. There are many causes for the increase in violence
in our society. Violence is defined by (1) criminal law, the illegal use of unjustified force, or the
intimidating effect created by the threat of this (2) the use of physical force to injure somebody or

school? It is a public school, it is in an area with lower incomes, the children and teachers who
populate this school are mostly of a singular race or ethnicity, the education they receive may be
