What is Leadership? Essay
Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership
is the "office or position of a leader" (Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one
that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the ability
someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition,
others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. In the end, leadership
takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking
ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to
help leaders define leadership for themselves. The Leader's...show more content...
As Gardner (1990) points out "Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a
fraction – usually a rather small fraction – of the potentialities within them" (p. 7). I happen to agree
with Gardner on this point. As a teacher you see numerous children who, with the proper training,
could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these
children grow up never knowing they have that possibility inside them. "We can do better. Much,
much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978)
who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today
because according to Burns (1978) "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger
for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns
wrote about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a
number of decades. "If we know all too much about our leader, we know far too little about
leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that
we, as a public, know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able
to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not otherwise be

Leadership in Innovation
LEADERSHIP
The activity of leading a group of people or an
organization or the ability to do this.
Leadership involves
(1) establishing a clear vision,
(2) sharing that vision with others so that they will
follow willingly,
(3) providing the information, knowledge and methods
to realize that vision, and
(4) coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests
of all members and stakeholders.
Leadership is "organizing a group of people to achieve
a common goal".

Innovation includes three different stages, which are all dynamic and iterative (constant):
1. Idea Generation
2. Evaluation
3. Implementation
The two types of innovation include exploratory innovation, which involves generating brand new
ideas, and exploitative innovation, which involves modifying and improving ideas that already
exist.[10][11][12][13] It is of importance to note that the ideas generated need to be useful in order to
be considered innovative. Innovation should also not be confused with creativity, which is merely
the generation of a novel idea that may not necessarily be put into operation, although these words
are sometimes used interchangeably in research literature when speaking about innovation
leadership. Innovation leadership is a quite complex concept, as there is no single explanation or
formula for a leader to follow to increase innovation. As a result, innovation leadership encompasses
a variety of different, activities, actions, and behaviors that interact with one another to produce an
innovative outcome.
Innovative Organizational Culture/Climate
Some studies have shown evidence of organizational culture as the mediator of the relationship
between transformational leadership and organizational innovation [21][22][23][24] and
performance.[25][26] In other words, in order for transformational leadership to have an effect

Essay on The Leadership Challenge
One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals
do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there
are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary
leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to
act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns
and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research
conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the

Once I have found my voice, I need to set an example and be a role model to my team. I think it
would be beneficial to create an award system that would allow people in our department to
nominate coworkers who have done an amazing job or went out of their way to help our
department. People who earn the award can leave early from work on a day of their choosing.
Having an award system that recognizes our staff will reinforce our department's shared values.
The second practice is to inspire a Shared Vision. A leader should be able to imagine a shared
vision for the future. Next, a leader should be able to inspire others to believe in the common vision.
Leadership is about engaging with others to solve problems. Leaders need to know what values,
hopes, and aspirations that their team wants to utilize for success.
Leaders are able to inspire a shared vision by imagining the possibilities and finding a common
purpose within their team. Currently, my department is trying to revamp their image. Before I
started working at Texas Wesleyan, our department had developed a bad reputation for accepting the
status quo and not advancing our University to the next level. As a leader, I must listen to my fellow
staff members and initiate a conversation about what we want our legacy to be as a department.
The third practice is to Challenge the Process. As I have mentioned earlier, one of the greatest
challenges in leadership is changing the

motivation which relates to several types of leadership styles that relates to specific followers. In
the path goal theory there are three leadership styles that make an effective leader, these include,
the leader must be directive, and this includes clarifying performance goals, using rewards and
being task orientated. Leaders should also be supportive this means the leader should be friendly
and approachable, treats everyone equally and with respect. The last leadership style if
participative, the leader should consult employees, ask for suggestions and take their ideas into
consideration (McShane, p388). Albert was a good leader due to his excellence in leadership
qualities which where it was an excellent listener, he was always motivated and have good
knowledge, power and influence in how to lead. Einstein always listened to everyone and never

many people put him down, and he also had a clear relationship between leadership and ethics

Leadership in Crisis: Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance
1. In what context should the Endurance expedition be analyzed? As a scientific endeavor? An
entrepreneurial venture? An exercise in imperial opportunity? By what criteria should the expedition
be evaluated? Given your answer to the preceding question, was it a success or a failure?
I believe that this expedition should be analyzed as an entrepreneurial venture because the South Pole
had already been found so there were no more continents for Shackleton to conquer. He would not
be a hero in this venture because Robert Falcon Scott had already been there and died a hero.
Shackleton had to find his own resources for this adventure as most entrepreneurs...show more

Was Shackleton an entrepreneur?
I believe Shackleton definitely was an entrepreneur in this expedition. Shackleton had to pursue
opportunity and he did with the few resources that he had. Entrepreneurs are made, not born, and
entrepreneurship is a way of managing, not necessarily a way of being as a person. Any of us can
be an entrepreneur. Shackleton showed great skill as a manager and entrepreneur in this
situation. He was able to motivate and keep his "company" together through very hard times.
Shackleton was able to revise and reset his objectives as the venture changed many times as well.
This was not a good time to explore the South Pole because England was at war and this
expedition had been done before. Not many people were behind Shackleton at the time of his
grand plan to walk across the South Pole. He was considered to be out of touch with his crazy
idea. Shackleton was a huge risk taker that many other entrepreneurs have been in history. He was
also proved he was such a great leader that 8 of the men who were on the voyage, signed up to join
him on his next trip to Antarctica.
3. What parallels do you see between Shackleton and other entrepreneurs or leaders whom you have

The Five Levels Of Leadership Essay
The Five Levels Of Leadership
By Nick Pollice
Jun 30, 2011
Becoming an effective leader is a lot like being in the stock market. You don 't make your fortune
in a day; you make it daily, a little bit at a time. What matters most is what you do day after day,
over the long haul. The secret to leadership success is investing in your leadership development,
much like letting your assets compound. The final result is "Leadership Growth" over time.
Leaders aren 't born; their made. The process of leadership is long, complicated and has made
elements. Respect, dignity, discipline, people skills, vision, emotional strength, opportunity,
preparedness and experience are just some of the intangible elements which come into play when
talking leadership.
We can, over a period of time, increase our leadership potential if we can understand and accept the
five levels of leadership. They are:
Level One – Leadership From Position
This is the basic level of leadership. At this level people follow you because they have to. Your
ability to lead people is totally geared to your position and does not exceed beyond the lines of your
job description or the authority granted to you by the company and your boss. Your security with the
company is based on title and position, not talent.
To be an effective leader at this level know your job, be prepared to accept responsibility, exercise
authority with caution, assess the strengths and short comings of your people, do more than what is

What Makes a Leader? Essay
To me, leadership is more than a title. It is more than just being in charge. Leadership is honestly,
learning, listening, and most importantly application. Leadership means going the extra mile or two,
doing the right thing no matter who's looking, staying encouraged and encouraging other even when
times are hard and you have every reason to quit. Leadership doesn't mean you're rich, well known,
liked, or respected but it does mean you are a passionate, caring, and authentic. Leadership means
you care about something so much you are willing to risk everything you have for this belief or
idea. Leadership is doing whatever you can in your power to make things better for those around you.

You don't have to be sure of every single action but you can't fear the future or change because in
order to accomplish your goal change is often necessary. A bold attitude is a definite must.
Leaders will always come against someone or something that opposes what they believe,
boldness will give them the strength to keep going even when the people they lead have start to
disappear or they have grown weak. At the first that you are ready to give up they will abandon
ship as the leader it must be a part of your character to be bold and keep going no matter how hard
things may seem. This characteristics tie in with the earlier trait of inspiration. When other see how
bold you are they will realize that just maybe if you're willing to put this much on the line, face the
probability of being ridiculed and disowned by your and the rest of society just maybe you stand for
something that is right and maybe they should too.
These characteristics are all great but to have the ability to truly lead you need conviction.
Conviction to keep going you going when your boldness has eliminated your friends, when your
yourself needs inspiration, when you don't want to be genuine, when you want to give up and take
the easy way out. Conviction is that thing that keeps us going, it helps us stay true to our task no

Leadership and Change Essay
Change is when a person does not follow their everyday routine. They may want to try something
different, or be forced to. Change can be for the good and the bad. Places can deal with change
ranging from the weather, to the animals present, or the seasons changing. Also, objects can deal
with change too. Objects like an iceberg can start to melt, or a forest fire can kill many trees in an
area. As a human, we are the ones deciding on change. We are in a position to make big decisions
and possibly even become a leader in order for change to happen. If one person starts to change,
others will follow and hopefully, the change benefits all. Change affects us in the work place,

If a leader took initiative to show others the seriousness of global warming, we could save animals
lives. The penguins from the book Our Iceberg is Melting, had a mixture of emotions while
dealing with change. Some embraced the change of moving icebergs while others tried to
convince the others moving was a bad idea. The penguins embraced change by having Fred
discover their iceberg was in danger. He then told Alice, who is a penguin with higher authority
and they formed a bigger team of penguins. "None of those with whom Alice spoke showed any
enthusiasm about the idea of swimming into a big dark cave" (Our Iceberg pg 20). The team of
penguins brought the idea of changing icebergs to the colonies attention and had their scouts
search for a new home. After searching, the scouts found a new iceberg which was safer for the
penguins and in the end, most of the penguins adapted to their new home and made new
traditions. The move was a success and some of the penguins who were originally against the
change are happier with the new iceberg. This past year the Stockton Softball team hired a new
coach to add our staff. The hitting coach was new to all the returning players because we had never
had a coach specifically for hitting and a new addition to the staff. The whole team and I had to

What Leadership Means To Me
Leadership is something that is of incredible importance to myself. I am a naturally outspoken
person and tend to take charge in group activities. Due to both my intelligence and self–confidence,
people tend to look towards me for leadership. However, that is simply the position that I am in, it
does not speak to the actual quality of leadership nor what leadership means to me. Leadership is
the ability to bring out the best in those around you, to recognize their strengths and weaknesses,
along with your own, and work to optimize those strengths and compensate for those weaknesses.
However, when one does this, it is not simply about dictating orders, but working in coordination

especially in need of help, I try my best to go out of my way to provide it, not just by telling them
what to do, however. I find that those who have trouble rarely have it due to blatant incompetence,
but a lack of confidence, so I do what I can to instill self–confidence within them. Sometimes I do
this simply through encouragement or private instruction if they are nervous. However, I find the
best solution is to work on these issues at their root. I begin transitioning them into working in front
of other people, or bringing them to the front row of the lineup, never entirely alone. In doing so,
they become more comfortable working with others. Furthermore, among those who have a
particular talent in a certain technique, I try to expose them to teaching, building their confidence in
themselves and their abilities by instructing students in need of help. Some of those students, in fact,
begin to help regularly without supervision. I feel my greatest accomplishments as a leader has been

to have great social skills in order to be communicative with clarity and objectiveness, and to have
a good relationship with the ones I lead. As a leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and
praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not always
the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way
of being a productive leader is discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while
maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels that
he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier
to work at being all that he can be. A leader to me, does not need to always know the answer, but
believes it to be important to have the initiative to make an answer appear. One form of bad

Communication skills and leadership go hand in hand. In order to lead a group and influence their

It allows for the inspiration, organization, and implementation of a vision (Ginter, Duncan, &

success. It allows all employees to see the "positive" in the future. It allows for camaraderie and for
achievement. Being a good leader and a role model allows for inspirational motivation–a vision. An
effective leader relies on feedback from their peers and does not become self–obsessed, but rather
self–aware (Goleman, 2014). Jack Welch states "Nothing you do anymore as an individual matters

characteristics of a quality leader. As General George Patton would say "Know what you know

any stifling of ideas that would solve the Crisis so he literally vacated the room. He did so after
dividing the large group of experts who had diverse knowledge bases and opinions about the matter,
into smaller groups, eliminating the chance of groupthink (Sutton, 2014). Their self knowledge and
organizational knowledge was spot on. Effective listening, verbal and nonverbal skills, trust,

Essay on Leadership Theories: Great Man Theory
Chapter 1: Leadership theories
Leadership theories are attempts to answer some of the question people have about leadership. These
theories range from simple "armchair philosophies" about the personal characteristics and effect
relationship between leaders and followers and situations.
Great man theory
Thomas Carleyle, an influential Scottish historian, is given credit for the dictum: "the history of the
world is but the biography of great men". We can easily relate to Carleyle's view since specific
examples of men who seem to have changed the course of history come readily to mind de Gaulle,
Hitler, Jesus Christ, Lincoln, Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Lenin, and Martin Luther King.
Winston Churchill, a man who for many personifies the...show more content...

Leadership trait theory
This theory is based on the premise that there are certain personality characteristics that are essential
for a person to possess in order to be a leader. The main emphasis is on what the person is in terms of
a constellation of personality traits. This theory searches for that set of universal leadership traits
that will assure success. Numerous traits have been suggested: courage, integrity, loyalty, charisma,
ambition, intelligence, honesty, clairvoyance, persistence, arrogance, health, political skill,
confidence and vision.
The major problem with this theory is that no one has ever found a set of leadership traits that could
be supported as truly universal an essential to successful leadership. Years of leadership research
have not led to the conclusion that there is any consistent pattern of personality traits that
characterize leaders.
Many factors have contributed to the failure to discover the leadership trait: difficulty and
measuring and describing personality traits; problem in establishing cause and effect relations (due
traits cause leadership or does leadership cause traits?); and disagreements on the meaning of terms,
such as loyalty and courage and even leadership
However, the primary factors that accounts for the failure to establish a definite link between
personality traits and leadership is the same factor that limits the value of great

Empowerment and Leadership
Leadership is a term that generates a variety of definitions from people. The definition of leadership
is defined as much from what a person has experienced with previous leaders just as much as what
they have been taught about leadership. There is a common school of thought that leadership and
management are synonymous. I personally do not participant in that sentiment. I believe that
leadership is not the same as management, because you can lead without having any management or
positional power. The author John C. Maxwell defined a test of leadership from management this
way, "To test whether a person could lead rather than manage is to ask him to create positive change."
Leadership is promoting a positive experience and is not due to a position or rank. Leadership
can be categorized by three traits. Those traits are; Empowerment, Discipline, and Character. The
first trait, empowerment is one's ability to create a positive change by helping others achieve their
own great success. The second trait is discipline or consistency, which is defined as a leader's
ability to gain support from the dependability of their actions and motivations. The third trait of
leadership is an individual's character or professionalism. A leader needs to be professional in all of
their interactions with others regardless of the other person's position or rank.

Concept of Leadership
Leadership – what is it? Many definitions have been offered, cultural stereotypes abound, numerous
programs focus on leadership development, but the question remains. In fact, leadership is many
different things to different people in different circumstances. When we think of leadership, we often
think first of famous individuals. We may think of great political leaders: Washington, Churchill,
Roosevelt. We may think of the leaders of social movements: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Caesar
Chavez. We may think of spiritual leaders: Jesus, Mohammed, Mother Theresa. Do we also include
in our definition some of the infamous leaders such as Hitler, Stalin, or David Koresh? Obviously,

In Leadership Is an Art (1989), De Pree asserts that "the first responsibility of a leader is to define
reality". Bennis (1990) writes that leaders "manage the dream" . Vision is defined as "the force
which molds meaning for the people of an organization" by Manasse (1986).
According to Manasse, this aspect of leadership is "visionary leadership" and includes four
different types of vision: organization, future, personal, and strategic. Organizational vision
involves having a complete picture of a system's components as well as an understanding of their
interrelationships. "Future vision is a comprehensive picture of how an organization will look at
some point in the future, including how it will be positioned in its environment and how it will
function internally" (Manasse, 1986). Personal vision includes the leader's personal aspirations for
the organization and acts as the impetus for the leader's actions that will link organizational and
future vision. "Strategic vision involves connecting the reality of the present (organizational vision)
to the possibilities of the future (future vision) in a unique way (personal vision) that is appropriate
for the organization and its leader" (Manasse, 1986). A leader's vision needs to be shared by those
who will be involved in the realization of the vision.

LEADERSHIP 2
Abstract
What comes to mind when the words leader or leadership are heard? Usually a president, a
teacher, a C.E.O, a work supervisor or a prime minister comes to mind. Well these are people who
are considered to be leaders because they work to achieve a positive change for a particular
organization or community.Leadership is the process in which a particular individual influences
others to achieve an objective or a common goal. This paper will explain what the term leadership

A leader is not someone who dictates or makes up rules; a true leader is someone that is on a
never ending process of self study, education, and training to become a better person and help
others achieve a common goal. Developing good leadership skills does take practice and a great deal
of time, it does not just happen from one day to another. Good leaders are continually working and
studying to improve their leadership skills. It is good to be a leader, but it's even better to be a
leader everybody wants to follow and admire.
A leader usually has influence on the team members to work hard, but most importantly to be
committed to their goals. There are two types of leaders: task oriented and person oriented
LEADERSHIP4 leaders. The task oriented leaders are more focused in training, and in
performance, while the person oriented leaders are more interested in the interpersonal
relationships with the team. Another very crucial characteristic a leader must possess is trust.
Trust is the basis for all the relationships in our lives. Without trust we have nothing, and that
makes it almost impossible to create a healthy relationship as well as a nice work environment
with others The leadership process is not about things is about people. The characteristics of a
leader come to light in our day to day interactions with the people who are around us. A true leader
is the one who really has a great relationship with

Leadership Essay Ideas

  • 1. What is Leadership? Essay Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership is the "office or position of a leader" (Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. In the end, leadership takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to help leaders define leadership for themselves. The Leader's...show more content... As Gardner (1990) points out "Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a fraction – usually a rather small fraction – of the potentialities within them" (p. 7). I happen to agree with Gardner on this point. As a teacher you see numerous children who, with the proper training, could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these children grow up never knowing they have that possibility inside them. "We can do better. Much, much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978) who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today because according to Burns (1978) "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns wrote about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a number of decades. "If we know all too much about our leader, we know far too little about leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that we, as a public, know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not otherwise be Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Implementation The two types of innovation include exploratory innovation, which involves generating brand new ideas, and exploitative innovation, which involves modifying and improving ideas that already exist.[10][11][12][13] It is of importance to note that the ideas generated need to be useful in order to be considered innovative. Innovation should also not be confused with creativity, which is merely the generation of a novel idea that may not necessarily be put into operation, although these words are sometimes used interchangeably in research literature when speaking about innovation leadership. Innovation leadership is a quite complex concept, as there is no single explanation or formula for a leader to follow to increase innovation. As a result, innovation leadership encompasses a variety of different, activities, actions, and behaviors that interact with one another to produce an innovative outcome. Innovative Organizational Culture/Climate Some studies have shown evidence of organizational culture as the mediator of the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational innovation [21][22][23][24] and performance.[25][26] In other words, in order for transformational leadership to have an effect Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. The second practice is to inspire a Shared Vision. A leader should be able to imagine a shared vision for the future. Next, a leader should be able to inspire others to believe in the common vision. Leadership is about engaging with others to solve problems. Leaders need to know what values, hopes, and aspirations that their team wants to utilize for success. Leaders are able to inspire a shared vision by imagining the possibilities and finding a common purpose within their team. Currently, my department is trying to revamp their image. Before I started working at Texas Wesleyan, our department had developed a bad reputation for accepting the status quo and not advancing our University to the next level. They are: Level One – Leadership From Position This is the basic level of leadership. At this level people follow you because they have to. Places can deal with change ranging from the weather, to the animals present, or the seasons changing. Also, objects can deal with change too. Objects like an iceberg can start to melt, or a forest fire can kill many trees in an area. As a human, we are the ones deciding on change. We are in a position to make big decisions and possibly even become a leader in order for change to happen. If one person starts to change, others will follow and hopefully, the change benefits all. The penguins from the book Our Iceberg is Melting, had a mixture of emotions while dealing with change. He then told Alice, who is a penguin with higher authority and they formed a bigger team of penguins. "None of those with whom Alice spoke showed any enthusiasm about the idea of swimming into a big dark cave" (Our Iceberg pg 20). The team of penguins brought the idea of changing icebergs to the colonies attention and had their scouts search for a new home. After searching, the scouts found a new iceberg which was safer for the penguins and in the end, most of the penguins adapted to their new home and made new traditions. The move was a success and some of the penguins who were originally against the change are happier with the new iceberg. This past year the Stockton Softball team hired a new coach to add our staff. Due to both my intelligence and self–confidence, people tend to look towards me for leadership. However, that is simply the position that I am in, it does not speak to the actual quality of leadership nor what leadership means to me. Leadership is the ability to bring out the best in those around you, to recognize their strengths and weaknesses, along with your own, and work to optimize those strengths and compensate for those weaknesses. When I encounter those I find especially in need of help, I try my best to go out of my way to provide it, not just by telling them what to do, however. I find that those who have trouble rarely have it due to blatant incompetence, but a lack of confidence, so I do what I can to instill self–confidence within them. Sometimes I do this simply through encouragement or private instruction if they are nervous. However, I find the best solution is to work on these issues at their root. I begin transitioning them into working in front of other people, or bringing them to the front row of the lineup, never entirely alone. In doing so, they become more comfortable working with others. Furthermore, among those who have a particular talent in a certain technique, I try to expose them to teaching, building their confidence in themselves and their abilities by instructing students in need of help. Perhaps what these leaders are really saying is that they are resisting change. Technology is here to stay and leaders have to get on board and become proficient in it's use because many of the people that are being led are very proficient in the latest I pads, IPods, cell phones, email, Skype, and many other forms of communication. If a leader is being pounded with so many messages that the thought process is being impaired, I suggest turning off your I Pad and taking time out to speak with Jesus, lest we allow anything or anybody to separate us from hearing and understanding what Jesus intends for us to do. As a leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not always the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way of being a productive leader is discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels that he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier to work at being all that he can be. These theories range from simple "armchair philosophies" about the personal characteristics and effect relationship between leaders and followers and situations. The main emphasis is on what the person is in terms of a constellation of personality traits. This theory searches for that set of universal leadership traits that will assure success. Numerous traits have been suggested: courage, integrity, loyalty, charisma, ambition, intelligence, honesty, clairvoyance, persistence, arrogance, health, political skill, confidence and vision. The major problem with this theory is that no one has ever found a set of leadership traits that could be supported as truly universal an essential to successful leadership. Years of leadership research have not led to the conclusion that there is any consistent pattern of personality traits that characterize leaders. Many factors have contributed to the failure to discover the leadership trait: difficulty and measuring and describing personality traits; problem in establishing cause and effect relations (due traits cause leadership or does leadership cause traits?); and disagreements on the meaning of terms, such as loyalty and courage and even leadership However, the primary factors that accounts for the failure to establish a definite link between personality traits and leadership is the same factor that limits the value of great Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The definition of leadership is defined as much from what a person has experienced with previous leaders just as much as what they have been taught about leadership. There is a common school of thought that leadership and management are synonymous. I personally do not participant in that sentiment. I believe that leadership is not the same as management, because you can lead without having any management or positional power. The author John C. Maxwell defined a test of leadership from management this way, "To test whether a person could lead rather than manage is to ask him to create positive change." Leadership is promoting a positive experience and is not due to a position or rank. Leadership can be categorized by three traits. Those traits are; Empowerment, Discipline, and Character. The first trait, empowerment is one's ability to create a positive change by helping others achieve their own great success. The second trait is discipline or consistency, which is defined as a leader's ability to gain support from the dependability of their actions and motivations. The third trait of leadership is an individual's character or professionalism.
