The Articles Of The Draft Of Capitulation
The Articles of Capitulation signed 1760 marked the concluding chapter of France's hegemony in
North America. By 1764 the French possession of Ile Royale and Ile St.Jean along with their prize
colony of Quebec were handed over to Great Britain. Therefore, why are these articles important in
contemporary society and does it indicate British hegemony in Canada? The Articles of Capitulation
of Montreal in 1760 was a diplomatic tool used by the British military command to supplant the
military forces in New France, by confirming to the needs and rights of regular Francophones within
Quebec while placing strict editions that legitimized their hegemony in North America. Therefore, it
is the purpose of this essay to analysis the Articles of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the increased population, the colony stabilized its economic situation, thereby investing in the
welfare of the colony.
However as the Articles of Capitulation indicated the period of stability for New France had
political and economic problems. With a higher and stable population, French goods and access to
tradable goods; furs, pelts and natural resources produced an economic rivalry between the English.
As the economic rivalry increased, it began to cause friction in their political relations. Gradually,
Franco–Anglo relations began to encompass territorial supremacy of the North American region.
Interestingly, the geopolitical situation during the early 18th century displayed English territory
along the Atlantic seaboard and in Rupert 's Land, while France's territory concentrated in the centre
of North America.
Hostilities between France and Great Britain broke down in 1702 due to the Spanish succession. In
North America, this conflict had been referred to as Queen Anne's War and resulted in the
accelerated downfall of the New France. When the war ended in 1713 with the signing of the Treaty
of Utrecht France was forced to ceded parts of its colony; Acadia, Newfoundland, Hudson Bay and
the country of the Iroquois. The Treaty of Utrecht is important because it signified the growing
emergence of English hegemony over North America, but more importantly it exhibited English
ambition to seize all French possession, indicating a policy of Britain's interest to

The Acadians
In the early 1700s, settlers from France came to the Atchafalaya River Basin to trade furs with the
Native Americans and perform raids into tribal areas to gather slaves. Peace was eventually reached
in 1718, but the Native American population had decreased tremendously as a result of warfare and
new diseases. Once the British won the French and Indian War in 1763, Acadians from Nova Scotia
began seeking a new Acadia, or nouvelle Acadie, in America. It wasn't until 1765 that they reached
Louisiana and settled in New Orleans along the Teche Ridge. The Acadians developed a variety of
new skills such as: rudimentary farming, logging, and ranching. Throughout the course of time,
Acadians gradually began intermarrying with the other settles in the area. Hispanics, Old World and
Canadian French, Native Americans, and enslaved Americans are all examples of such. This resulted
in what became known as the French Creole culture. Cajuns are the descendants of the Acadians that
were exiled by the British, and make up a large portion of southern Louisiana's population. Several
of the current residents of the Atchafalaya Basin area can trace their family all the way back to the
Acadians. Their unique way of doing things, whether that be through the food, music, or traditions,
greatly show their Cajun heritage. As the number of Euro–Americans increased ... Show more

The Atchafalaya Basin
The Atchafalaya Basin could be perceived as the embodiment of the Cajun Culture within the
southern Louisiana region. It has not only been a home to the growing Cajun population but a safe
haven for Native American settlers and French colonist that have been exiled. The Basin has existed
for hundreds of years dating back to the 15th century. The basin itself is one of the most ecologically
varied regions within the United States and has provided for over hundreds of different species. The
benefits of the Atchafalaya Basin are endless and have continually provided the inhabitants of the
area with bountiful resources, hunting grounds, homes, and transportation. The Atchafalaya river

About 200 years ago, the first Europeans gradually moved into the Atchafalaya region and Acadians,
otherwise known as Cajuns, soon followed behind. Those who developed the Acadian culture came
from rural areas of western French. By 1604, these same people ventured off to Acadie, currently
known as Nova Scotia, Canada, where they became farmers and fisherman. Unfortunately, over the
next 100 years, the ownership of the colony of Acadie changed over several times. This caused great
distress between the colonies and created an easy access for anyone to take over. In 1713, Great
Britain took permanent control of Acadie, however many Acadians refused the rule over them. They
denied their new British title and would not swear allegiance to the British crown and church. Due
to their outlandish refusals, the British began to remove the Acadians from the homelands and herd
them onto British ships where they would set sail to an unknown destination in exile. Many of the
former Acadian colonist found their way to the southern area of Louisiana. The Acadians took
refuge in a murky swamp called Atchafalaya. They made a home out of the basin. The Acadians had
to start over their whole lives but many were relieved to be out of the hands of the British and to
maintain their independent culture they had once established. The Acadians adapted to the
constantly, changing nature of the basin environment. The settlers

How Clearcutting Severely Impacted The Biodiversity Of...
Natural Resources Canada defines biodiversity as the "variety of life", and expresses that
endangered tree species are mainly threatened by forest clearance. In tandem with forest clearance,
climate change also places stresses on endangered tree species, such as increased insect outbreaks
and drought. Canadian forests compose 10% of the world's total forests, and they consist of a wide
range of plant and animal species, which places significance need for the impact of clearcutting in
Acadian forests to be addressed. This paper will analyze how clearcutting severely impacts the
biodiversity of Acadian forests through the review of several reports, articles, and studies, will

Acadian Biodiversity
The Acadian forest in Canada takes up 12.1 million hectares, and can be distinguished from other
parts of Canadian forests by its location in the lowlands and deep valleys and by its mixed hardwood
and softwood composition. The position of these trees in deep valleys isolates them from other
forests, and limits their ability to further naturally spread their population geographically, and causes
them to be more significantly impacted by disturbances. The Acadian forest region covers the
Canadian provinces of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, with a rich
diversity of plant and animal species consisting of many shade–tolerant trees and lichens. Yet these
shade–tolerant trees are slowly transitioning into small seedlings as logging practices abolish old
trees. The old–growth hardwood population in specific provides critical habitats for animal species
though these trees are declining in numbers due to extensive logging. With the declining old–growth
trees, the number of critical habitats will also decline and animal species will most likely die out.
These regions are affected by climate change at the same time, which increases the vulnerability of
Acadian biodiversity.
Increasingly more species are becoming at risk of extinction in Canada, and the natural landscapes
are consistently being altered by industrial,

Police Dispatcher Observation
On Monday January 29, 2018 I was responding to a call of shots fired at College Villa Apartments
when I heard Gautier Police Dispatchers announce there was a white vehicle leaving the scene. As I
was travelling down Ladnier Road I observed a white vehicle turn north onto ladnier from College
Villa and immediately turn around and head onto West Park Drive. I proceeded to follow the
vehicle, as I turned onto West Park I observed the vehicle pull into a driveway and cut their lights
off. As I pulled close I observed a dark figure run from the car towards the back yard. As I exited my
vehicle i was rushed by two females stating their cousin had been shot, then two other females
appeared from the front corner of the house screaming "she's been shot do something". I observed a
Black female lying half in the seat half in the floor board behind the drivers seat. I approached the
vehicle and noticed the female was still breathing but bleeding profusely from the mouth area.
While trying to keep the females out of the vehicle and secure the scene the best I could the female

Essay on The Deportation of Acadians
Colonists from France came to Canada and settled in Acadia also known as present day east coast
colonies during the seventeenth century. The name given to the French colonists from the time of
arrival to Canada was the "Acadians". The Acadians from France continued their formal lifestyle by
farming, fishing and maintaining a close family oriented culture in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland,
Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The Acadians had created a prosperous agriculture
economy up until the late eighteenth century, when there was a colonial struggle in power between
the French and the British. British had conquered Port Royal and the Acadians refused to recognize
British rule, wanting to keep their religious freedom and not wanting to ... Show more content on

Activities such as fishing, mining, and agriculture were ways in which the east coast had an
abundant of resources. Fish, salt and livestock were the food the Acadian's relied on for survival, so
it was important that enough resources were available in the East coast. There was a direct route for
due to the geographic location of their settlement being right on the coast line. They resided close to
the Bay of Fundy making it easier for them to trade with others coming into the colony. By living
close to waterways the Acadians were able to make a living by trading with other colonies and
continue providing their families with food and resources for a formal lifestyle. Geographically,
Nova Scotia was a great place for their agriculture and in which it boosted their economy. Therefore
Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick were lands where the
Acadians could continue the lifestyles and continue to provide for their families due to the fertile
soils making agriculture and livestock an easy transition from former life. The economies were able
to increase with resources being so profitable and promising. The British and French colonies were
struggling with colonial powers but the British conquered and rising tensions begun. The British
colonies thought the land the Acadians inhabited important land to Great Britain's colonial
advancement. Therefore British needed to exile them as far away as possible. The deportation was

Prince Edward Islands’ history is a crucial aspect in...
Prince Edward Islands' history is a crucial aspect in Canada's past. The work of historians has helped
to develop and in essence create its intricate and telling historiography. PEI's early history is difficult
to classify before its entrance into Canada, due to its isolated geography and heavy British influence.
The most notable representations of PEI and the problem of absentee landlordism in the eighteenth

Island's history, politics and land. The use of the word "modern" or the act of modernity is
understood to be the foundation of the transformations and innovations in the region and its people.
Similar to other books on the topic critical analysis of PEI is necessary, it allows for both islanders
and non–islanders to understand the historical value and gain a holistic perspective of the region.
Noted by the editors, there is diversity among those who have and continue to study the history of
the Island. This understanding is once again evident within this publication since "a diversity of
backgrounds, and special interests, were invited to take a fresh look at the Island" (7). As per the
title, Prince Edward is seen in the mid–to late twentieth century as a transformed garden. This
garden being the mythological origin of the Island ¬– "a peaceful, pastoral vision so warmly drawn
in the Anne of Green Gables story and, before that, in historical and folkloric accounts... a romantic
notion of the "Island way of life," which stubbornly resists criticism" (8). The old, traditional, island
way of life becomes challenged, moving from the eighteenth century establishment and modest
developmental picture. For the purpose of the work, the mythology of the Island encompasses the
belief of the Islanders, unlike its usual association with the popular imagination and illusions most

Based on the facts the British were not justified for the deportation of Acadians.Because they were
neutral people who actually helped British soldiers and suffered because of it. Due to this
deportation the Acadians had their homes taken from them and destroyed, separated from friends
and family, and 53% died from disease and harsh conditions while being sent overseas. Because the
Acadians did not sign the oath of allegiance which violated the oath they signed in 1727 their houses
were taken and burned. This was not necessary because they had already signed the oath of neutrality

Acadian Hermit Crabs Lab Report
Construction of each substrate: Rock Crevice: The rock crevice used four rocks to make a crevice
shape Rock Structure: The rock structure was made of three rocks, two rocks on the bottom level
and one resting on top of the others to make an overhang. Seaweed: Find a small bunch of
Bladderwrack–Fucus seaweed and weigh it down with a small rock so it does not disturb the other
substrates. Shells: Collect periwinkles (both smooth and common), dogwhelks, and a mussel or clam
to make up the shell area. It is okay if the periwinkles and dogwhelks move, just make sure they do
not obstruct the test. The Actual Experiment: To begin the experiment, one must pick out one hermit
crab at random from the holding bucket. One person records the data about the species of each
hermit crab, the species of the shell it is dwelling in, and anything else of interest about the hermit
crab itself regarding its appearance. The recorder then must prepare the stopwatch, as the collector

biology generally focuses on, studying the behavior of hermit crabs is still important for the science.

discussion of Acadian Women and their families having to uproot everything they own and moving
to a new French colony in Isle Royale after the defeat of Port Royal .These families would move
from Mainland Nova Scotia to the City of Louisbourg, Cape Breton Island. Once in their new home,

The authors begin by examining colonial records which are a type of primary source that is very
credible, in the sense, it is likely a government recorded document at that time which would have
information regarding the transition from mainland Nova Scotia to what is now Louisbourg . This
source, in general, is a good one but doesn't completely back up the thesis of this article. The second
primary source that is used by Jonah and Tait is an archaeological investigation of Acadian
agricultural households. This is an incredible source that they picked because this source allows us
to understand what the structure of these people's homes would be like in the 18th century. I'm not
sure exactly where the writers get this information for this next source, but I do believe it is a
secondary source worth mentioning. Two historians named Maurice Basque and Josette Brun has
gathered examples of Acadian women who have stepped out in wanting to participate in the public
realm .This would be very credible source because historians do a lot of research into their topics
and often get their work published in books. The last primary source which I find very interesting
and the most credible out of this article would be the estate inventory of Jeanne Thibodeau article

allows the reader to get a sense of what people in this decade would of own for clothes as well as
any other personal items. All of these sources are very good and appropriate in the context of this

Cocaine Is The Most Potent Stimulant Out There
Cocaine has been shown to be the most common, most potent stimulant out there. It was found in
the leaves of the erythroxylon coca plant in the Andean highlands, and it was used for many
centuries as a relaxant and energizing tea by natives. It was used in surgeries to numb the nose,
throat or eyes. It was useful in these areas because it constricted blood vessels and helped stop blood
flow as well as acted as an anesthetic (Virtual Mass Spectrometry Laboratory 2003). Today cocaine
is still used in hospitals for the same reason. Cocaine was also thought to be used to treat depression,
alcoholism, and addiction to morphine. It was sold in pharmacies in Canada until around 1911. It

Individuals who become addicted to cocaine find themselves as slaves to the drug. As stated in the

the psychological dimension. Although some people use cocaine to escape reality and numb the pain
others use it because it may be all they know. As Tara Smith states in discussion forum 2 that in the

This was one reason why the British conducted the expulsion of
Pittman 4 the Acadians because they could not have full control over them. The British Officials
wanted the Acadians to be loyal subjects to the King and be under their control. 'The essence of the
administration's position became clear: the Acadians were told that their loyalty and obedience could
best be properly demonstrated by 'their immediately taking the Oath of Allegiance in the Commons
from before the Council [...], he based his opinions upon the question of their loyalty as subjects,
rather than upon their position as aliens (Griffiths, 126–127).
The British Officials wanted in ensure the Acadians were on their side and signing the Oath would
prove to the British Officials that they were. The British thought they Acadians were a threat
because they would not fall under their command. The British demanded the Acadians to take this
oath because it would also ensure the Acadians would not take up arms against the British Empire.
'The legal argument over the link between the oath of the allegiance and the rights of the Acadians
as British had little import for the immediate circumstances' (Griffiths, 127). The British gave the
Acadians a chance to stay in Nova Scotia by agreeing to the Oath, but the Acadians turned down

Acadian Natives
Acadians are the descendants of a group of French–speaking settlers who migrated from coastal
France in the late sixteenth century to establish a French colony called Acadia in the maritime
provinces of Canada and part of what is now the state of Maine. Forced out by the British in the
mid–sixteenth century, a few settlers remained in Maine, but most resettled in southern Louisiana
and are popularly known as Cajuns.
Before 1713, Acadia was a French colony pioneered mostly by settlers from the coastal provinces of
Brittany, Normandy, Picardy, and Poitou–a region that suffered great hardships in the late sixteenth
and early seventeenth centuries. In 1628, famine and plague followed the end of a series of religious
wars between Catholics and Protestants. When social tensions in coastal France ripened, more than
10,000 people left for the colony founded by Samuel Champlain in 1604 known as "La Cadie" or
Acadia. The area, which included what is now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island,
and part of Maine, was one of the first European colonies in North America. The Company of New
France recruited colonists from coastal France as indentured servants. Fishermen, farmers, and
trappers served for five years to repay the company with their labor for the transportation and

the Mississippi River and the Red River were unassociated with one another and ran in almost
parallel directions. After the start of the 15th century, the Mississippi began heading west making
Turnbull's Bend and intersecting with the Red River. This westward loop, after being connected to
both rivers, became a distributary of the Mississippi River (Micah Bennett, 2013). When the

nonagricultural extractive economy was centered on the seasonal exploitation of fish, crabs, Spanish
moss, crawfish, frogs, and fur animals. This was closely tied to the changing water levels in the
swamp along with other environmental conditions. During the decades after the Civil War,
permanent fishing villages were created in the Basin. The demand for Spanish moss increased to

Compare And Contrast Nova Scotia And Acadians
The Acadians lived in Nova Scotia, part of the French dominion in North America. However, France
was not as interested on the territory where the Acadians lives, as they were in the mainland territory
of New France (present day Quebec). On the other hand, from an early date the British showed
interest on the territory where the Acadians were located. The territory of Nova Scotia is located in a
strategic geographic locations that is the entrance to New France. The British attempted,
unsuccessfully, three times to capture Acadia. However, on their fourth attempt they were able to
capture the territory. In The Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, the French succeeded Acadia to the British.
For the most part, the Acadians were allowed to continue with their

The Five Main Geographic Regions
There are five distinct geographic regions, also known as physiographic provinces, in Virginia that
each carry its own physiography and background in the underline geology. Among these five main
geographic regions of Virginia, the Valley and Ridge of Virginia plays an important role in the
geology of Virginia starting from its Proterozoic period that dates back to 600 Ma through Cenozoic
period in 0 Ma. The significant activities during the Silurian period as far as sediment deposition is
concerned include erosion of Taconic Mountains and deposition of clastic wedge, such as Juniata
Formation and Tuscarora Formation; and as far as carbonate deposition is concerned, these activities

Consecutively, the Taconic and Acadian mountain building occurrences took place, pressing and
adding new land to the margin of North America. Although Acadian orogeny was a bigger mountain
building event as compared to other periods' events, around 250 to 300 million years ago during the
Pennsylvanian and Permian periods, the ultimate mountain building event took place as ancestral
North America collided with Ancestral Africa which had already joined the continents as Gondwana.
As a result of this collision, the central and southern Appalachians were created. Sediment from the
Iapetus ocean basin and the continental shelf and slope of North America was pushed upwards and
pressed along with the crust; this mountain building event has been known as the Alleghenian
Orogeny. However the Acadian orogeny primarily formed the northern Appalachian Mountains, the
Alleghenian orogeny did the ultimate pressing to the margin of the continent which form today's
Appalachian Mountains. The Alleghenian mountain building events, just like other mountain
building events, deformed, folded, uplifted, faulted, introduced, and pressed the crust of the Easter
margin of North America. The affected rocks are comprised of sediments deposited in the inland
ocean throughout the period of Paleozoic. They also include Iapetus and Avalon rocks; these rocks
were added to North America from the Ordovician through the Devonian. In the meantime, as the
Appalachian basin was filled with sediment produced as a result of eroding Appalachian Mountains,
the inland ocean that existed west of the Taconic and Acadian Mountains started to recede slowly.
The collision resulted in the rocks along the eastern margin getting compressed westward similar to
a collapsing telescope. Crust slices were also pushed westward along faults such as the Brevard
Zone that runs alongside the eastern edge of

Louisiana's Cajun Dialect
Louisiana's Cajun Dialect
Linguist and Cajun Megan E. Melancon calls the Cajun dialect a "gumbo". There are many
languages that make up this gumbo. The various languages include Spanish, French, German, and
English. The Cajun language is mainly spoken in Southern Louisiana, but can reach into parts of
Southern Texas and Southern Mississippi due to emigration (Melancon).
The word Cajun comes from the word Acadien. Acadia was a French colony in 1604 located in the
areas now known as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada. In the middle of the eighteenth
century approximately four thousand Acadians moved into South Louisiana, into the region around
Lafayette and the Lafourche Bayou country. This group of people brought with them the French
language. Over the years the Cajun dialect emerged. Many say Cajun is not just a dialect but an
entire language of its own.

The Acadian Conflict Essay
The conflict over the Acadians also added to the misery of the relationship between the French and
the English in Canada. The main example is the war of Spanish Succession that happened between
the two countries from 1710 to 13. The Treaty of Utrecht was signed as a result of this war. The
treaty divided Acadia into English mainland 'Nova Scotia' and Island French 'Acadian' territory. The
Acadians had to face many hardships due to this partition. Initially, after the division of the Acadian
region in 1713, the Acadians were allowed to remain in Nova Scotia by the British officials
operating the colonies at that time.
However, things turned bitter when the Acadians were asked to pledge the oath of alliance to their
British colonialists. While most Acadians were initially reluctant to do this, the British did force
them to take at least an oath of neutrality. The oath of neutrality meant that the Acadians were not on
either the British or the French side. They took an oath to not take up arms with the French either. ...

The oath of neutrality meant that they were now neither British subjects nor French subjects. They
were no one's allies. The Acadians faced with this dilemma refused to sign the oath of neutrality
altogether, as they wanted to be a part of their French origins. This refusal to sign the oath,
unfortunately, led to the belief on the part of British officials that the Acadians were a threat to the
security of the colony, and thus must be contained. A direct result of this act was several atrocities
were forced upon the Acadians, and they were ultimately evicted. The eviction of Acadians is a
major event that has shaped the relationship between the French and the English politically. The
French do not think they are part of the old British kingdom. They are thus fighting for their

The Devonian Era
The Devonian period initiating approximately 416 Mya and culminating 359 Mya represents a
geologic time period, which characterizes a major part of the Paleozoic Era. Traversing between the
Silurian period (444 – 416 Mya), and Carboniferous period (359 – 299 Mya) the Devonian period

In the early Devonian period, also known as the Lochkovian, Pragian and Emsian epoch, due to
substantial tectonic activity, resulted in the convergence of numerous continental land masses,
forming into two supercontinents known as Euramerica and Gondwana. Both these supercontinents

Why Is Bilingualism Important In Canada
Canada has a very unique cultural aspect that not many countries share. It is one of just eleven
countries that has official policies of bilingualism(1). This mix of languages is a result of two
different Colonial empires trying to claim the same land. At first, these two cultures often clashed
and did not fraternize at all. As the years went on however, the two tongues learned to accept one
another. After accepting one another they morphed into one bilingual culture that Canadian's from
the Atlantic to the Pacific came to love and express. Nowadays politics in Canada is constantly

French and Indian Wars (1688–1763) The French and Indian Wars is the American name for the
series of wars that occurred in North America from 1688–1763. They included King William's War,
Queen Anne's War, King George's war, and the French and Indian War, also known as the 7 years
war. A major motive to the wars was the control of North American territory and especially Hudson
Bay, which was very important to the fur trade business. King William's War (1688–1697) King
William's War was the first of the French and Indian Wars. The war was caused due to the treaties
and agreements made at the end of King Phillip's War not being followed. Another main component
was control over the fur trade industry and supremacy of North America. King William's War was
ended by the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697. The treaty gave back north American territorial gains
during the war back to the original holders. Queen Anne's War / War of Spanish Succession Queen
Anne's War was the second of the French and Indian Wars and was fought between 1701 and 1714.
The main reasons for the war included the rivalry between France and England in America, a
problem that was not solved by the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697. Two months after Queen Anne rose
to the British throne, the three allied powers declared war on France on May 1702. The Treaty of

The Acadian Culture Influence The Cajun Cuisine?
Whenever someone thinks of Louisiana, they probably imagine crawfish boils, steaming seafood,
and some type of gumbo or jambalaya. While many people know of the Cajun cuisine, not everyone
knows about the history and the influence the Acadians had on the style of cooking. Acadians were
simple people who lived off the land of Louisiana. They fished in the surrounding water lines and
cultivated crops that they used in their cooking. By manipulating what was available to them and
creating unique dishes, the Acadians inadvertently developed an unprecedented cuisine. The history,
culture, and cooking style would later influence and create the Cajun cuisine.

Firstly, roux's, which originated from the Acadians, are commonly used in many dishes. At its very
core, roux's consist of flour and some type of oil or fat. Roux's are divided into three subcategories:
light, medium, and dark (L. Hartman, personal communication, September 1, 2014). Lighter roux's
are typically used in sauces with darker meats to give a "toasted, nutty flavor" while dark roux's are
commonly used with white meats (Prudhommes, pg 27). Generally, after the roux has reached the
desire color and taste, vegetables are added to it. Cajun cuisine has three main vegetables that are
added to almost every dish: onion, celery, and bell peppers. These three staple vegetables are often
called the 'Holy Trinity.' However, the function of the trinity is not to serve as the primary vegetables
of the dish, rather they are seasoning vegetables. The seasoning vegetables break down during the
processes of cooking and season the other ingredients (Wuerthner, n.d. p. 1). Besides the trinity
vegetables, okra is another common vegetable that is used. Okra is from African descent, which
shows the influences of the other cultures as well (Dry, n.d. para. 2). Additionally, garlic and
different types of peppers are frequently added to Cajun dishes. A common misconception
surrounding Cajun cuisine is that it is spicy because of the type of seasoning and spices used.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine–then still part of

Zilpah Wadsworth, found herself the daughter of a Revolutionary War hero. His father, Stephen

Frances finally accepted his proposal the following spring, bringing in the best eighteen years of
Longfellow's life. The couple had six children, five of whom lived to adulthood, and the marriage
gave him a fighting spirit. In 1847, he published Evangeline, a book–length poem about Evangeline,
which describes the betrothal of a fictional Acadian girl named Evangeline Bellefontaine to her
beloved, Gabriel
Lajeunesse, and their separation as the British deport the Acadians from Acadie in the Great
Upheaval. The poem then follows Evangeline across the landscapes of America as she spends years
in a search for him, at some times being near to Gabriel without realizing he was near.
Finally, she settles in Philadelphia and, as an old woman, works as a Sister of Mercy among the
poor. While tending the dying during an epidemic, she finds Gabriel among the sick, and he sadly
dies in her arms .The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Even to the point of inspiring similar stories, Louisiana Judge

Essay on History Of Cajun Cuisine
History of Cajun Cuisine Cajun cuisine is a fusion of food from different regions with very rich
histories, such as France, Canada, and the southern U.S. It was originated by peasants of French
ancestry. These immigrants settled in the "Acadian" region of the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia from
1604 to 1654. By 1755, the population of these settlers had grown to about 15,000. They survived
on cereal crops such as wheat, barley and oats, and garden vegetables including field peas, cabbage,
and turnips. This diet was supplemented by domestic livestock, wild game, and fish. (History of the

The prairie was ideally suited for cattle, and successful ranches were soon established in this region,
providing New Orleans and the surrounding area with much desired beef. A dual class system
emerged with the Acadian settlers, dividing Acadians into the small elite planter class, and the
working class farmers; a minor intermediate,"middle" class existed as well. The elite planters soon
adopted slavery, farming large tracts of land. They became successful in farming cotton by the early
eighteenth century, which was replaced with sugar by the mid–eighteenth century, and rice shortly
thereafter. The planters identified with the "Creoles," a more wealthy and educated class than the
emerging Cajun culture. As farm land became more valued with the profits of cotton in the early
part of the nineteenth century, the poorer Acadians in the river valley were forced to sell their land
and move into the less desirable unclaimed swamp area. Swamp life was difficult and isolated, but
did provide the emigrants with a generous supply of foodstuffs that added to the unique diet of
Cajuns. (Cajun Country. (2003). www.cs.wisc.edu) In both wetland and prairie Cajun homes,
kitchens were simple and practical. Kitchen cookware consisted simply of a cast–iron kettle
suspended over a hearth; and a few families had a cast–iron frying pan. Subsistence farming and
hunting produced such mainstay foods as corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, squash, okra, and
rice.

Dark Romanticism Vs Transcendentalism Essay
Although Transcendentalism was the first great American literary period, Dark Romanticism
followed closely behind, bringing a dark twist to the previous writing style. Dark Romantic writers,
such as Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville, saw Transcendentalism as overly optimistic. Dark Romantics
wanted to change literature written during the time. While Transcendentalists wrote about the need
for social reform, Dark Romantics wrote about characters failing at change (VanSpanckeren). Both
styles believed nature held a spiritual force, but Dark Romantics viewed this force as evil and

Colonial Eras In Canada
The history of Canada is defined by many different eras of time that symbolize a distinct stage of the
growth of the country. Each of these phases was a step towards where we are today with
immigration policy .We converse, oppose, and sometimes fiercely confront one another over the
significance, issues and outcome of these eras. We modify, redefine, revive and sometimes come to
accept the portrait created by historians of these eras and through that process gain a greater
perceptive of how Canada came to the point in history where we now stand at which helps
Canadians use this knowledge in making decisions about where they will go next.
Historians recognize two distinct colonial periods in Canada's past:
New France, from 1604 to 1763
And British North America from 1670 to 1873.
Within New France era there were two main populations, one in Maritimes known as Acadia and the
other ones in Quebec. Both main populations relied on the crops, livestock and fisheries.
New France fell to British arms in the 1760s, cutting off immigration from the homeland. As a
result, the birth rate had to account for population increases among French Canadians.

After getting familiar with the Billy Goat Trail you can see all the evidence that a great geological

Trail actually started at the bottom of the Iaptus Ocean more than 460 million years ago. At the

The Acadian Orogeny not only started the mountain building in the region but also brought volcanic
activity along and this meant that the rocks in the region now where under a great amount of
pressure and extreme amount of heat.
Some of the evidence that I observed at the Billy Goat Trail from the Acadian Orogeny was the
Gneiss rocks that where hidden underneath the large boulders where we stopped for lunch. The rock
Gneiss requires high pressure and high heat because the rock has U–shaped banding due to the
pressure and black and white striations from the heat. (2) Another observation from the trip that
supports the Acadian Orogeny is the Lamprophyre dikes that cut across the Meta–Greywacke and
are found in both sides of the Potomac River. The Lamprophyre dikes are younger than the Meta–
Greywacke since they cut across them and since the dikes are made of basalt they can be dated back
about 360 million years ago thus linking them to the Acadian Orogeny. Also the dikes weather out
faster than the rock around them. (3)
After the Acadian Orogeny the continent of North America collided with Africa which was at the
time of Pangea. Then the continents separated and opened up a new ocean called the Atlantic Ocean
but there was no evidence found in the region to prove this geological event so the time missing is
called an unconformity. During this time the region was just experiencing weathering

were an independent entity within New France. Today, "the Acadians are the French speaking

This settlement became the capital of Acadia and would remain so until the expulsion in 1713,
interrupted only for three years, from 1610–1613, when Port Royal briefly fell under British rule.
Although the population of Port Royal grew slowly at first, the French settlers lived well, farming
and hunting. However, Port Royal was difficult to navigate, due to the constant flooding and
unstable building materials.
Although [in 1687] Port Royal is the largest settlement, it contains only nine or ten buildings the
others being barns. All the houses are low, made of pieces of wood ... covered with thatch.
Despite the fertile ground, providing the Acadians with a diverse diet, it would be a struggle to
defend Port Royal in times of discord. The fort itself also often fell into disrepair, as it was difficult
to maintain when flooding constantly eroded the riverbank. Due to this fertile ground, Port Royal
became desirable to the growing British empire. Despite the failing fort, the British settlers became
interested in Port Royal and realized the potential of the marshland. "Farming was the main, but not
only, occupation of the Acadians." These people successfully grew a diverse diet including root
vegetables, grains, fruit, and other vegetables, as well as raising pigs, cattle, and sheep. This aided in
flourishment of the Acadian people but also turned the settlement into a potential conquest for the
English Colonies.

Was The British Justified In Deporting Acadians
Acadia was a colony of New France located in northeastern North America during the 17th and 18th
centuries, Which are now located in present–day New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Acadians were
the people who lived on the land, most of them had lived on the land for generations and had built
their farms with back–breaking work. Those who favor this position would argue that the British
were justified in deporting the Acadians. While others would argue the British were not justified.
These are my reasons for why the British were justified in deporting the Acadians.
One important argument that proves the British were justified in deporting the Acadians, is that they
could not trust them. Since Acadians were of French descent there was a possible

Cajun Culture Essays
Nous sommes Acadiens. (We are Acadians.) Some outsiders see us as a quaint, virtuous people,
spending a great deal of time singing, dancing, praying, and visiting? (Conrad, 1978, p.14). Others
see us as independent and unsophisticated. We see ourselves as fun–loving, carefree, happy, proud
people who have a great love for our culture. The Acadians were French settlers of eastern Canada
who were exiled from their land in the 1750?s. The Acadians are known to have settled in the
southern bayou lands of Louisiana around that time. The Acadiana people acquired their nickname,
?Cajuns,? from those people who could not pronounce Acadians correctly. Due to the opinion that
Cajuns were ?different?, they lived close together and became isolated ... Show more content on

It was the primary pastime of families. The music was original and they were proud of it. The
Cajuns sang from the heart, and that is what made the music the best and only one of its kind. They
expressed their love, joy, pain, and grief through song. Playing the accordion was an important
accompaniment to their singing. This instrument gave Cajun music its remarkable sound and beat.
French songs sung by the Cajuns many times reflected their language. Slang phrases such as ?oh–
yai–yi?, an expression of grief or pain, and ?Aaeeh? were shouted during the song when no lyrics
were sung. One particular phrase used most often in French love songs was ?oh, petite
chérie?, which meant ?dear little girl.? A few French songs that became well known around
Acadiana in the 1920?s and 1930?s were ?J?ai Passé Devant ta Porte,? (I Passed in Front of
Your Door), and ?Saute Crapaud,? (Jump Frog). The most well known Cajun French song ever
depicted is ?Jolie Blonde? (Beautiful Blonde). It is popular not only in Acadiana but in many other
places outside of Acadiana, Louisiana, and the United States, even though many do not understand
the Cajun French language. The unique style and beat of Cajun music will never be forgotten, nor
will it ever die out. For these reasons and many more, Cajun French music will always ?laissez le
bon temps rouler? (let the good times roll)!
Housing played an important part in the Cajuns lives just as much as family

The Articles Of The Draft Of Capitulation

  • 1. The Articles Of The Draft Of Capitulation The Articles of Capitulation signed 1760 marked the concluding chapter of France's hegemony in North America. By 1764 the French possession of Ile Royale and Ile St.Jean along with their prize colony of Quebec were handed over to Great Britain. Therefore, why are these articles important in contemporary society and does it indicate British hegemony in Canada? The Articles of Capitulation of Montreal in 1760 was a diplomatic tool used by the British military command to supplant the military forces in New France, by confirming to the needs and rights of regular Francophones within Quebec while placing strict editions that legitimized their hegemony in North America. Therefore, it is the purpose of this essay to analysis the Articles of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the increased population, the colony stabilized its economic situation, thereby investing in the welfare of the colony. However as the Articles of Capitulation indicated the period of stability for New France had political and economic problems. With a higher and stable population, French goods and access to tradable goods; furs, pelts and natural resources produced an economic rivalry between the English. As the economic rivalry increased, it began to cause friction in their political relations. Gradually, Franco–Anglo relations began to encompass territorial supremacy of the North American region. Interestingly, the geopolitical situation during the early 18th century displayed English territory along the Atlantic seaboard and in Rupert 's Land, while France's territory concentrated in the centre of North America. Hostilities between France and Great Britain broke down in 1702 due to the Spanish succession. In North America, this conflict had been referred to as Queen Anne's War and resulted in the accelerated downfall of the New France. When the war ended in 1713 with the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht France was forced to ceded parts of its colony; Acadia, Newfoundland, Hudson Bay and the country of the Iroquois. The Treaty of Utrecht is important because it signified the growing emergence of English hegemony over North America, but more importantly it exhibited English ambition to seize all French possession, indicating a policy of Britain's interest to ... • 3. The Acadians In the early 1700s, settlers from France came to the Atchafalaya River Basin to trade furs with the Native Americans and perform raids into tribal areas to gather slaves. Peace was eventually reached in 1718, but the Native American population had decreased tremendously as a result of warfare and new diseases. Once the British won the French and Indian War in 1763, Acadians from Nova Scotia began seeking a new Acadia, or nouvelle Acadie, in America. It wasn't until 1765 that they reached Louisiana and settled in New Orleans along the Teche Ridge. The Acadians developed a variety of new skills such as: rudimentary farming, logging, and ranching. Throughout the course of time, Acadians gradually began intermarrying with the other settles in the area. Hispanics, Old World and Canadian French, Native Americans, and enslaved Americans are all examples of such. This resulted in what became known as the French Creole culture. Cajuns are the descendants of the Acadians that were exiled by the British, and make up a large portion of southern Louisiana's population. Several of the current residents of the Atchafalaya Basin area can trace their family all the way back to the Acadians. Their unique way of doing things, whether that be through the food, music, or traditions, greatly show their Cajun heritage. As the number of Euro–Americans increased ... • 5. The Atchafalaya Basin The Atchafalaya Basin could be perceived as the embodiment of the Cajun Culture within the southern Louisiana region. It has not only been a home to the growing Cajun population but a safe haven for Native American settlers and French colonist that have been exiled. The Basin has existed for hundreds of years dating back to the 15th century. The basin itself is one of the most ecologically varied regions within the United States and has provided for over hundreds of different species. The benefits of the Atchafalaya Basin are endless and have continually provided the inhabitants of the area with bountiful resources, hunting grounds, homes, and transportation. The Atchafalaya river basin would not have been formed if it wasn't for all the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... About 200 years ago, the first Europeans gradually moved into the Atchafalaya region and Acadians, otherwise known as Cajuns, soon followed behind. Those who developed the Acadian culture came from rural areas of western French. By 1604, these same people ventured off to Acadie, currently known as Nova Scotia, Canada, where they became farmers and fisherman. Unfortunately, over the next 100 years, the ownership of the colony of Acadie changed over several times. This caused great distress between the colonies and created an easy access for anyone to take over. In 1713, Great Britain took permanent control of Acadie, however many Acadians refused the rule over them. They denied their new British title and would not swear allegiance to the British crown and church. Due to their outlandish refusals, the British began to remove the Acadians from the homelands and herd them onto British ships where they would set sail to an unknown destination in exile. Many of the former Acadian colonist found their way to the southern area of Louisiana. The Acadians took refuge in a murky swamp called Atchafalaya. They made a home out of the basin. The Acadians had to start over their whole lives but many were relieved to be out of the hands of the British and to maintain their independent culture they had once established. The Acadians adapted to the constantly, changing nature of the basin environment. The settlers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. How Clearcutting Severely Impacted The Biodiversity Of... Natural Resources Canada defines biodiversity as the "variety of life", and expresses that endangered tree species are mainly threatened by forest clearance. In tandem with forest clearance, climate change also places stresses on endangered tree species, such as increased insect outbreaks and drought. Canadian forests compose 10% of the world's total forests, and they consist of a wide range of plant and animal species, which places significance need for the impact of clearcutting in Acadian forests to be addressed. This paper will analyze how clearcutting severely impacts the biodiversity of Acadian forests through the review of several reports, articles, and studies, will include the past and present logging practices and finally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Acadian Biodiversity The Acadian forest in Canada takes up 12.1 million hectares, and can be distinguished from other parts of Canadian forests by its location in the lowlands and deep valleys and by its mixed hardwood and softwood composition. The position of these trees in deep valleys isolates them from other forests, and limits their ability to further naturally spread their population geographically, and causes them to be more significantly impacted by disturbances. The Acadian forest region covers the Canadian provinces of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, with a rich diversity of plant and animal species consisting of many shade–tolerant trees and lichens. Yet these shade–tolerant trees are slowly transitioning into small seedlings as logging practices abolish old trees. The old–growth hardwood population in specific provides critical habitats for animal species though these trees are declining in numbers due to extensive logging. With the declining old–growth trees, the number of critical habitats will also decline and animal species will most likely die out. These regions are affected by climate change at the same time, which increases the vulnerability of Acadian biodiversity. Increasingly more species are becoming at risk of extinction in Canada, and the natural landscapes are consistently being altered by industrial, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Police Dispatcher Observation On Monday January 29, 2018 I was responding to a call of shots fired at College Villa Apartments when I heard Gautier Police Dispatchers announce there was a white vehicle leaving the scene. As I was travelling down Ladnier Road I observed a white vehicle turn north onto ladnier from College Villa and immediately turn around and head onto West Park Drive. I proceeded to follow the vehicle, as I turned onto West Park I observed the vehicle pull into a driveway and cut their lights off. As I pulled close I observed a dark figure run from the car towards the back yard. As I exited my vehicle i was rushed by two females stating their cousin had been shot, then two other females appeared from the front corner of the house screaming "she's been shot do something". I observed a Black female lying half in the seat half in the floor board behind the drivers seat. I approached the vehicle and noticed the female was still breathing but bleeding profusely from the mouth area. While trying to keep the females out of the vehicle and secure the scene the best I could the female stopped breathing, I then checked for a pulse and was not able to find one. ... The name given to the French colonists from the time of arrival to Canada was the "Acadians". The Acadians from France continued their formal lifestyle by farming, fishing and maintaining a close family oriented culture in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The work of historians has helped to develop and in essence create its intricate and telling historiography. As a result of this collision, the central and southern Appalachians were created. The main example is the war of Spanish Succession that happened between the two countries from 1710 to 13. The Treaty of Utrecht was signed as a result of this war. The treaty divided Acadia into English mainland 'Nova Scotia' and Island French 'Acadian' territory. The Acadians had to face many hardships due to this partition. Initially, after the division of the Acadian region in 1713, the Acadians were allowed to remain in Nova Scotia by the British officials operating the colonies at that time. However, things turned bitter when the Acadians were asked to pledge the oath of alliance to their British colonialists. The formation started in the early Devonian period, however reached its pinnacle during the mid to late Devonian period. As a result of the newly formed mountain range, there was extensive erosion, which produced prodigious amounts of sediment, which was then deposited in lowlands and shallow seas nearby during the mid to late Devonian period. It is one of just eleven countries that has official policies of bilingualism(1). This mix of languages is a result of two different Colonial empires trying to claim the same land. At first, these two cultures often clashed and did not fraternize at all. As the years went on however, the two tongues learned to accept one another. After accepting one another they morphed into one bilingual culture that Canadian's from the Atlantic to the Pacific came to love and express. They included King William's War, Queen Anne's War, King George's war, and the French and Indian War, also known as the 7 years war. A major motive to the wars was the control of North American territory and especially Hudson Bay, which was very important to the fur trade business. King William's War (1688–1697) King William's War was the first of the French and Indian Wars. The war was caused due to the treaties and agreements made at the end of King Phillip's War not being followed. Another main component was control over the fur trade industry and supremacy of North America. King William's War was ended by the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697. The treaty gave back north American territorial gains during the war back to the original holders. Queen Anne's War / War of Spanish Succession Queen Anne's War was the second of the French and Indian Wars and was fought between 1701 and 1714. • 58. The Acadian Culture Influence The Cajun Cuisine? Whenever someone thinks of Louisiana, they probably imagine crawfish boils, steaming seafood, and some type of gumbo or jambalaya. While many people know of the Cajun cuisine, not everyone knows about the history and the influence the Acadians had on the style of cooking. Acadians were simple people who lived off the land of Louisiana. They fished in the surrounding water lines and cultivated crops that they used in their cooking. By manipulating what was available to them and creating unique dishes, the Acadians inadvertently developed an unprecedented cuisine. The history, culture, and cooking style would later influence and create the Cajun cuisine. Pre–note Before knowing the full Acadian history and the influence of the Acadians, it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Firstly, roux's, which originated from the Acadians, are commonly used in many dishes. At its very core, roux's consist of flour and some type of oil or fat. Roux's are divided into three subcategories: light, medium, and dark (L. Hartman, personal communication, September 1, 2014). Lighter roux's are typically used in sauces with darker meats to give a "toasted, nutty flavor" while dark roux's are commonly used with white meats (Prudhommes, pg 27). Generally, after the roux has reached the desire color and taste, vegetables are added to it. Cajun cuisine has three main vegetables that are added to almost every dish: onion, celery, and bell peppers. These three staple vegetables are often called the 'Holy Trinity.' However, the function of the trinity is not to serve as the primary vegetables of the dish, rather they are seasoning vegetables. The seasoning vegetables break down during the processes of cooking and season the other ingredients (Wuerthner, n.d. p. 1). Besides the trinity vegetables, okra is another common vegetable that is used. Okra is from African descent, which shows the influences of the other cultures as well (Dry, n.d. para. 2). Additionally, garlic and different types of peppers are frequently added to Cajun dishes. A common misconception surrounding Cajun cuisine is that it is spicy because of the type of seasoning and spices used. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow epitomized poetry of the nineteenth century, yet remained living, breathing figure through the aisles of history with his work. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine–then still part of Massachusetts–on February 27, 1807, the second son in a family of eight children. His mother, Zilpah Wadsworth, found herself the daughter of a Revolutionary War hero. His father, Stephen Longfellow, served a prominent Portland lawyer and later a member of Congress.Henry assumed the role of a dreamy boy who loved to read. Both books were very popular, but Longfellow's growing duties as a professor left him little time to write more. In addition, Frances Appleton, a young woman from Boston he was courting, had refused his proposal of marriage. Frances finally accepted his proposal the following spring, bringing in the best eighteen years of Longfellow's life. The couple had six children, five of whom lived to adulthood, and the marriage gave him a fighting spirit. In 1847, he published Evangeline, a book–length poem about Evangeline, which describes the betrothal of a fictional Acadian girl named Evangeline Bellefontaine to her beloved, Gabriel Lajeunesse, and their separation as the British deport the Acadians from Acadie in the Great Upheaval. The poem then follows Evangeline across the landscapes of America as she spends years in a search for him, at some times being near to Gabriel without realizing he was near. Finally, she settles in Philadelphia and, as an old woman, works as a Sister of Mercy among the poor. While tending the dying during an epidemic, she finds Gabriel among the sick, and he sadly dies in her arms .The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Essay on History Of Cajun Cuisine History of Cajun Cuisine Cajun cuisine is a fusion of food from different regions with very rich histories, such as France, Canada, and the southern U.S. It was originated by peasants of French ancestry. These immigrants settled in the "Acadian" region of the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia from 1604 to 1654. By 1755, the population of these settlers had grown to about 15,000. They survived on cereal crops such as wheat, barley and oats, and garden vegetables including field peas, cabbage, and turnips. This diet was supplemented by domestic livestock, wild game, and fish. The prairie was ideally suited for cattle, and successful ranches were soon established in this region, providing New Orleans and the surrounding area with much desired beef. A dual class system emerged with the Acadian settlers, dividing Acadians into the small elite planter class, and the working class farmers; a minor intermediate,"middle" class existed as well. The elite planters soon adopted slavery, farming large tracts of land. They became successful in farming cotton by the early eighteenth century, which was replaced with sugar by the mid–eighteenth century, and rice shortly thereafter. The planters identified with the "Creoles," a more wealthy and educated class than the emerging Cajun culture. As farm land became more valued with the profits of cotton in the early part of the nineteenth century, the poorer Acadians in the river valley were forced to sell their land and move into the less desirable unclaimed swamp area. Swamp life was difficult and isolated, but did provide the emigrants with a generous supply of foodstuffs that added to the unique diet of Cajuns. (Cajun Country. Dark Romanticism Vs Transcendentalism Essay Although Transcendentalism was the first great American literary period, Dark Romanticism followed closely behind, bringing a dark twist to the previous writing style. Dark Romantic writers, such as Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville, saw Transcendentalism as overly optimistic. Dark Romantics wanted to change literature written during the time. While Transcendentalists wrote about the need for social reform, Dark Romantics wrote about characters failing at change (VanSpanckeren). Both styles believed nature held a spiritual force, but Dark Romantics viewed this force as evil and mysterious. Romantic writers believed that people were prone to sin. • 66. Colonial Eras In Canada The history of Canada is defined by many different eras of time that symbolize a distinct stage of the growth of the country. Each of these phases was a step towards where we are today with immigration policy .We converse, oppose, and sometimes fiercely confront one another over the significance, issues and outcome of these eras. We modify, redefine, revive and sometimes come to accept the portrait created by historians of these eras and through that process gain a greater perceptive of how Canada came to the point in history where we now stand at which helps Canadians use this knowledge in making decisions about where they will go next. Historians recognize two distinct colonial periods in Canada's past: New France, from 1604 to 1763 And British North America from 1670 to 1873. Within New France era there were two main populations, one in Maritimes known as Acadia and the other ones in Quebec. Both main populations relied on the crops, livestock and fisheries. New France fell to British arms in the 1760s, cutting off immigration from the homeland. As a result, the birth rate had to account for population increases among French Canadians. The Acadian Orogeny not only started the mountain building in the region but also brought volcanic activity along and this meant that the rocks in the region now where under a great amount of pressure and extreme amount of heat. Some of the evidence that I observed at the Billy Goat Trail from the Acadian Orogeny was the Gneiss rocks that where hidden underneath the large boulders where we stopped for lunch. The rock Gneiss requires high pressure and high heat because the rock has U–shaped banding due to the pressure and black and white striations from the heat. (2) Another observation from the trip that supports the Acadian Orogeny is the Lamprophyre dikes that cut across the Meta–Greywacke and are found in both sides of the Potomac River. The Lamprophyre dikes are younger than the Meta– Greywacke since they cut across them and since the dikes are made of basalt they can be dated back about 360 million years ago thus linking them to the Acadian Orogeny. Also the dikes weather out faster than the rock around them. (3) After the Acadian Orogeny the continent of North America collided with Africa which was at the time of Pangea. Then the continents separated and opened up a new ocean called the Atlantic Ocean but there was no evidence found in the region to prove this geological event so the time missing is called an unconformity.
