We began this semester talking about what the definition of a family was. We delved into the
definitions of each type of family, focusing mainly on a nuclear family, a family of affinity, and an
extended family. I recently began watching this TV show called The Fosters. This show is the
definition of a family of affinity, it follows two monogamous lesbian women who aren't married but
have been together for years. One of the women has a son by her ex–husband and the two women
together have adopted two children and are fostering two more. It is interesting following the story

Many people say that they are scared to let people into their lives, but my family loves to let other

The houses do not include just the typically depicted white stone people traditionally think of but all

Australia is a country that is diverse, multicultural and unique. Our geography and cultural history
are different to anywhere else, which has definitely captured the attention of the rest of the world.
For migrants from diasporic communities, assimilating to the Western identity while trying to
maintain the cultural heritage is not an easy task, especially during the 20th century, where racial
discrimination played a large role in impeding multiculturalism. I believe my childhood experiences
is an example of global framework where race, class and gender are the factors that made not only

citizens'. But because of such upbringings, my familial tie with my external family became more
strong and made me who I am today.
Primary school was not the best experience for me as I felt like I was already different for having
been born overseas, and I wasn't about to accentuate this quirk any further. Like every other child of
migrants from another country, I have felt the culture shock and alienation on the first couple of
months of primary school. This estrangement was especially strong for me because my school was
dominated by white kids. I was often picked on and laughed at because I couldn't speak any English.

NTRO I consider myself a member of many groups including my biological family, my church
family, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC–CH) alumni, and George Mason
University's (GMU) Master's in Social Work (MSW) graduate student cohort. My biological family
includes my immediate family members, as well as my extended family members. While I do not
see my extended family often, I do identify them as close family members, as we share many of the
same values and traditions. Similarly, to my biological family, I identify my church family as a
group I am a part of. Before moving to Virginia to begin the MSW graduate program at GMU, I

activities and mission of the church, and it became one of the groups I most identified with over the

My Family As An Extended Family
Introduction From an early age I placed a very high value on being a part of my family. At first it
was most likely feeling safe and secure. That being said, I had the logical realization that family was
important. Of special importance were grandparents and the extended family members. Being born
in a town where both sets of grandparents resided in addition to all the rest of my extended family
was very comforting to me. Being the first–born grandchild had its advantages. I became very
attached to all the grandparents and enjoyed love, attention and quality time frequently until the first
grade when we moved. When my younger sister was born, I never felt replaced or left out because
of the quality time my grandparents invested in me. Even after my family moved a state away we
always went back for holidays, birthdays and summer vacations. I have a great deal of wonderful
memories from my childhood. My mother's father, my grandfather, was a very large presence in the
community. He was well respected in both the white as well as the black community in which he

in Southern Alabama in the 1960's. He was a tall man at six foot five and was a hard worker. He
often bailed people out of jail and helped them with food when they were financially strapped

before I came along he had been an alcoholic, a smoker, had been known for his quick temper, was
not religious and had been unfaithful to my grandmother. As it was told to me, one Sunday morning
he got up, got dressed, went to church and never took another drink or smoked again and was a
radically changed man. He became a kind, caring, charitable person. He was more of a father to me
in many ways than my dad and we had long talks in which he stressed the important things in life.

When I first entered school and had to start making friends, I tried very hard but always seemed to

As an adoptive child, there has always been a little part of me that felt missing or incomplete. It was
not that my family did not feel or act like family, there just seemed to be a deep–down connection or
piece of the puzzle that was absent. This absence established a newly found interested in history and
genealogy. I wanted to know where my biological ancestors originated and the historical events they
experienced. I faced an engrained desire to obtain my biological connections which so many of my

a major for their career solely on the purpose that it is financially sustainable. I am not working hard
right now to be able to make money for my future family. My main reason for working hard is for
myself – to accomplish my goal and to be able to expand the knowledge of humanity. Yes, now I can
see how this can be a dilemma for others, but for me if I succeed, my goal is still able to sustain my
family's finance – not every member in the extended family however – and keep me permanently
happy. This may not be so for others.

Fortunately, the writer with immediate family members currently lives in a neighborhood of people
from the same ethnic group. As an adult, she has chosen to live with her family in the ethnic
neighborhood or community wherein the people are from a similar heritage hence she engages in
ethnic cultural events, such as religious festivals sometimes with dancing associated with new yam
festival. Because she was raised in extended family setting, she lived with grandparents, aunts,
uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces including her siblings. She always references extended family
in her social frames world and maintains close ties/contact with both the young and older

Latino Population And Hispanic Population
Currently within the United States one of the fastest growing minority population (Schwartz &
Scott, 2012) is the Latinos. In 2010 Census Bureau Brief ( Ennis, Rois–Vargas, & Albert, 2011) it
stated how an estimated 15 million Latino individuals were living within the United States, which is
approximately about 16% of the entire U.S. population. There is one big problem with addressing
the Latino population, and that is the family patterns are either misrepresented or not properly
understood, due to the label of Hispanic and Latinos being placed together. These two groups may
share the same spoken language of Spanish and have similar cultural ancestry but the diversity
among Hispanic and Latinos (Schwartz & Scott, 2012) make generalizations about their lifestyles
difficult. The term Hispanic came to be used in the 1970's by government officials (cdc.gov, 2011)
in trying to provide a diverse label on this population that had connections to speaking Spanish and
the Spanish culture. Latino became more of a termed to be used when distinguishing between
Mexican (Hispanics) and Latinos who descendants from Latin America such as Cuba and Puerto
Rico.
