7. What is the issue? 5 The issue as defined by India Club: “Over the years India Club has been able to maintain a consistent membership of approximately 400 members, both undergraduate as well as post-graduate. However, the number of new members recruited each year hides the fact that a lot of current members are hesitant to renew their membership the following academic year. This may stem from the organization being characterized solely by the events it puts together, since students who have been to a number of events may feel the lack of novelty and hence the reluctance to pay for membership again. Our eventual goal is to present India Club as an organization that members feel a sense of attachment to, as a body that brings together all students or faculty who have anything to do with the Indian culture.”
19. Low Sense of Belonging Absence of common thread tying all the members together Lack of representation of general members in selection of events offered Inability of member body to initiate events themselves No forum for members to speak out about their own interests 10
22. Data “I just never got around to [getting involved] plus if anything I only went to garba cuz it was fun, I never really felt like going to the other events.” -Indian GT undergrad non-member 13
23. Possible Solutions Subcommittees Increase involvement and chance for ideas of general members to develop since initiatives can be planned Accessible funding for general members to organize events Registered and justified General Body meeting If not physically in a room, then online forum 14
27. Supporting Data “ I don’t think is worth paying the Membership fee”. “I find it cheaper just to go to the events I am interested in” “I don’t feel comfortable with out of pocket payments, is like a black box and you don’t know where the money is going” 18
28. Potential Solutions 19 Corporate sponsorship Reduce monetary pressure on members Indian companies in the community Transparency Logic behind price hikes Online budget
39. Problem Description Lack of members’ feedback with regards to: Type of events offered throughout the semester Post-event feedback Executive Committee feedback
40. Why Feedback Is Important? Surveying has a direct effect on the general membership by: Increasing satisfaction Increasing Accountability Increasing involvement Offers a detailed picture of the event’s performance to the Executive Board. “Negative feedback is better that none. I would rather have a man hate me than overlook me. As long as he hates me I make a difference.” Hugh Prather
