Brooklyn Museum Article Review
Upon, my visit to the Brooklyn Museum on Wednesday October 12, 2016 I chose African
Innovations instead of The European Art Exhibit. The country that my artifact originated from is
Africa, the country is Nigeria. Nigeria is in West Africa, along the eastern coast of the Gulf of
Guinea, and just north of the equator. The borders of modern Nigeria were not created until the
British united their colonial power over the area in 1914.
The name the piece I performed my article review on is called the Male Nok Head which is from the
village of Nok, located in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The artist is unknown and it dates back to circa
550–50 B.C.E. The materials used for the construction of life–sized statue is Terracotta which is a
baked clay.
There isn't much known about the Nok people of ancient Africa. It is said that the Nok were a
sedentary society, which meant they remained in one location. Nonetheless, they were very talented
iron workers with refined iron forges and made complex iron tools. The Nok themselves create their
advance iron work through smelting, which is the process of heating metal to extract it in a pure
form. This made the Nok a vital part of local ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

from the huge talking drum used on ceremonial occasions to the tiny neck–tambour. Some drums

The Pros And Cons Of Self-Determination In Nigeria
The federal Republic of Nigeria is a country in western Africa, with its federal capital situated in
Abuja. It comprises of 36 states and has about 174 million inhabitants. Nigeria is one of the most
popular countries in Africa because of its economy, cultural diversity, ethnicity, movie– and music
industry. It is also a member of the commonwealth Nations, African Union and the United Nations.
Which implies that its under the English law (Common law).
Nigeria is also called a multinational state, since it has over 5oo ethnic groups or tribes. The three
major tribes are Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. Biafra Biafra was a secession which existed from 30th

Self –Determination versus Territorial Integrity
The Biafra's did not have their Self –Determination, therefore they demanded the right for Self–
Determination and the right to maintain their own territorial integrity because the Nigeria principle
of territorial integrity was held over the Easter ants Self – Determination.
In addition, since someone can argue that Self–Determination is a legal right it must be mentioned
that Self–determination is not an entitlement to independence. This was just an entitlement to
independence in time of colonialism.
The viability of colonial boundaries in Africa
At this time the received wisdom that African boundaries were non– negotiable. "The idea was that
if the boundaries were successfully challenged it would create more agitation and therefore chaos in
Africa and elsewhere as a result the OAU in cooperated in its charter the inviolability of African
boundaries a clause which is defended with a great ceil. It was precisely this principle that Biafra
attempted to challenge in the

Ifemelu's Influence On Americah
In Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel Americanah, the influence of home is very significant to
Ifemelu, one of the main characters, for the reason being that she keeps in touch with her Nigerian
roots even when she is away in the United States.
Once Ifemelu reaches America, she tends to move around a lot, she stays in many different cities
including Philadelphia, Baltimore, Brooklyn, and New Haven. Studying at Princeton she travels all
the way to Trenton just to get her hair braided. This was a change in culture due to the fact that near
Princeton there were not any real black locals. The ones that were considered to be black were often
so light–skinned, Ifemelu never could have imagine them with braids in their hair. Getting her hair
done in African braids is a way she can stay connected to back home.
America was a new vibe for Ifemelu, different culture, people, music, and language. She adjusts to
the people in America, although it takes some time. She arrives in America with a strong Nigerian
accent, everyone aware she was African. People will talk to her slowly for the fact being that they

Sadly this did not last very long, for the reason being that Ifemelu's job search is not going very well
in the wonderful America. Her condition being so bad that she takes this job from a man. After she
finishes this job she is not able to contact Obinze for the fact being that she felt horrible. She regrets
taking the job offer from the man, she falls into depression and cuts out Obinze from her life.
Ifemelu did not believe she had depression due to the fact that in Nigeria there was no such thing.
After this, Ifemelu began to date other guys, which included Curt, and Blaine. During this whole
time Ifemelu is blogging about race. Adding her experiences with other people and her personal life.
The blog becomes a hit and Ifemelu finally begins to earn

As a result of this coming together, the Nigerians saw that they had more in common with each

Nigerian political movements, media outlets, and trade unions whose purpose was the advancement
of all Nigerians, not specific ethnic groups, became commonplace. the nationalistic movement grew
out of some of the modernization the British had instituted in Nigeria. The educated elite became
some of the most outspoken proponents of an independent Nigeria. This elite had grown weary of
the harsh racism it faced in business and administrative jobs within the government. Both the elite
and the uneducated also began to grow fearful of the increasing loss of traditional culture. They
began movements to promote Nigerian foods, names, dress, languages, and religions. Increased
urbanization and higher education brought large multiethnic groups together for the first time. As a

Chimamanda Adichie's Speech : Do You Truly Know?
Do You Truly Know? As a child, Chimamanda Adichie, born in Nigeria, began to write about what
she had read in British and American children's books– a single story. Although never being outside
of Nigeria, she composed the same, ideal foreign character within every story. When she first
discovered African books, her outlook changed. She realized that people like her, with a darker skin
complexion, could also exist in literature. (Tedtalks 2:11) Adichie's success in her speech was
achieved in the sense of her style, tone, and the overall emotional appeal to the audience.

Their poverty was my single story of them." (Tedtalks 3:49). Adichie felt a great amount of pity for
Fide's family. (Tedtalks 3:27). She realized she had stereotyped Fide off of what she had heard about
him. In another story, she spoke about her American roommate. Her roommate was puzzled at the
fact that Adichie could speak English so well, not knowing English is the official language in
Nigeria. Adichie's roommate only knew one single story of Nigerians. "She assumed that I did not
know how to use a stove. What struck me was this: She had felt sorry for me even before she saw
me." (Tedtalks 4:38). Instead of feeling anger, Adichie understood why her roommate stereotyped
her. If she had not lived in Nigeria, she too would feel empathy for the civilians. She stressed about
how easy it is to stereotype, and that she had also labeled someone due to a misconception.
Although her tone suggests empathy, Adichie brightened her speech with humor. Adichie could have
told a gloomy, depressed story. Alternatively, she had an overall tone of humor. In a particular story,
her roommate requested to hear her tribal music, as if every African sang and danced in ceremonies.
Instead of feeling anger, Adichie thought of a comical joke to reply with. "She asked me if she could
listen to what she called my tribal music, and was consequently very disappointed when I produced
my tape of Mariah Carey." (Tedtalks 4:22). Adichie had no recognition of tribal

My Family Permanent Resident Status
I am going to America; I kept retrospection in my mind. My Parents and elder sister have already
traveled to the United States a couple of months back. I was living with my father 's cousin for the
mean time and my two younger sisters were staying with my mom 's friend. The news is now out in
our little town, on the outskirts of Lagos. Are you going to America? That was the question most
people kept asking me. I do not know was usually my reply, trying to be coy about it. In Nigeria,
going to the United States is perceived as winning the lottery, which is ironic because my father won
the visa lottery that guaranteed my whole family permanent resident status in the United States. The

The only downside is that everyone cannot afford to go to school. Even though there is free
education for the public schools. Private schools are often better. My dad worked for the Electoral
commission of Nigeria and my mom was a math teacher in a high school so they were able to send
me to a really good school. Unfortunately for one of my colleagues, he had to drop out of middle
school because he could not afford the tuition and he had to hawk bread so that his parents can pay
the rent. He was a very brilliant student but unfortunately could not get an education. Till this day, I
am sad he did not complete his education. He would always talk about how he wanted to be a doctor
and I think he had the potential to be one. Who knows if he could have been the one to find a cure
for cancer? There are other unfortunate students like him who cannot complete school for various
reasons. The education system is good but not everyone is given a chance to learn. We also were not
allowed to speak our local languages in school and the teachers referred to them as vernaculars. I
have been afraid of teachers my whole life because I was conditioned to fear them. Teachers in
school for any mistake I made often beat me flogged me and that fear has been instilled in me.
The African culture is still there but it is gradually diminishing and most people are adopting the
Western culture. Which takes me to the movie industry and music. Nigeria has the third largest

Meanwhile, the music industry generally refused to see any merit in instituting its own digital
distribution. It took a technology company, Apple Inc., to take advantage of this pent–up demand by
launching an online Web site (the iTunes Store) in 2003 to sell songs, and later videos, for play on
the company's iPod portable digital media player, using the company's iTunes music program. By
2006 Apple had sold more than 100 million iPods, and more than 2 billion songs had been
downloaded from the iTunes Store, with all of the songs paid for and the royalties returned to record
companies and artists. Following Apple's lead, other commercial online music services were
launched, such as those byAmazon.com and Microsoft. However, the largest record companies
generally refused to participate or allowed only a small sample of their record catalogs to be sold
online in digital form. One complaint by the music industry was Apple's flat pricing structure, in
which all songs were sold for the same price. In 2008 Amazon.com negotiated a deal with most of
the major record companies whereby their songs would be priced at different levels according to
market considerations.

Factors Militating Against the Implementation of Early...
Introduction The early childhood education is a field that has been rather slow to take up the
challenge of sustainability; it has a potentially significant role to play not because of underlying
concerns for children's welfare, but because of interest in children's environments and its attention to
social justice. Recently, a new dimension has been added to early childhood education for
sustainability (ECEfS) as an emerging national and international field, given a fillip with the launch
of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005–2014) (UNESCO,
2005). Early Childhood Education for Sustainability (ECEfS) recognizes that young children have

In his book The Great Didactic (1657) he introduced what is now considered one of the first
descriptions of an educational system tailored for young children. In Comenius' view learning
through the senses was the best way to teach during early childhood. He believed that before reading
about the object of study a child should first touch, see, taste or hear it. According to Comenius,
there should not be any gender or social class discrimination in education. He paid specific attention
to individual differences among children; he believed that a child's development depended on his or
her natural inclinations and that one and the same method would not work with each child.
Comenius' system of education included four levels spanning from infancy to adulthood. Each level
outlined the educational experience needed by a person at each stage of development. This idea was
new and became the foundation of other scholars' works on the concept of early childhood
education. Jean–Jacques Rousseau believed in education according to the ways of nature. He felt
that education should be focused more on sensory and rational experiences than on literary and
linguistic ones. One of Rousseau's most famous quotes proclaims that "Our first teachers are our
feet, our hands and our eyes. To substitute books for all these...is but to teach us to use the reasons of
others". In his view education for young children

The Negative Consequences Of Globalization And Culture
Globalization brings more negative consequences that outweighs its benefits. One area it has really
affected that gives me concern is "culture". "Globalization can be defined as the interaction and
integration amongst people, companies and governments of different nations. Its a process that it's
aided by international trade and investment and driven by information technology" extracted from (
globalization101.org) "Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people,
encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts"(published on livesience by:
zimmermann, July 12, 2017). Globalization has impacted so much negatively on culture. The
section of culture I believe globalization has affected most is the fashion industry, language and the
character of people world wide. Nigeria where I come from is a developing country and we see
globalization as an opportunity for development. This has been one of the major mediums that has
earned globalization the lands of Nigeria to dominate and our culture to alter. In the early centuries
in Nigeria, women used to be known for wearing clothes that fully covered their body. And any
woman seen in a cloth that exposes any sensitive part of her body(shape, breast, lap) was regarded
as irresponsible and in most cases, regarded as a prostitute. Young boys were also known for
wearing trousers that weren't tight on them or sagging . This is no longer the case since Nigeria
embraced globalization. Today all over the streets of Nigeria, indecent dressing has captured the
hearts of our youths and even the elderly. Our young girls now wear mini skirts, slacked blouse that
exposes their breast, and also tight trousers all in the name of "civilization". And sadly enough even
some married women Have adopted this pattern of dressing. This has lead to so many divorce and
rape cases in Nigeria. Now, most guys consider sagging of their pants(trousers), wearing tight/
pencil trousers and earrings as fashion. These are things that was regarded in the early centuries as
signs of madness and a show of indiscipline. Globalization has also impacted negatively on our
language system. Our local dialects are no longer spoken and regarded the way it was in

Culture Is A Way Of Life Shared By People
Culture is a way of life shared by people in a society. Culture is exceptional, although it may have
other things in common with other cultures. According to American Culture, "Culture encompasses
religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is
right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a
million other things," said Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in
London. The United States is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. According to
People & Culture, within its vast area, Nigeria has over 250 different ethnic groups, all with their
own languages and heritage. Cultures are made and followed according to the society or family one
comes from or was born in.
According to "USA – Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquette, Americans are extremely informal,
friendly, and call most people by their first name. Most people who come to the United States may
already know a few things about the people through TV. Although this is of course a skewed reality
some of the stereotypes are true, especially American friendliness and informality. People tend to
not wait to be introduced, will begin to speak with strangers as they stand in a queue, sit next to each
other at an event, etc. Americans are very casual in greeting. A handshake, a smile, and a 'hello ' are
all that is needed, which I really agree with but in Nigeria, where I came

There are many features that make up a culture all over the world. Culture can be defined as the
characteristics, attitudes, knowledge and beliefs of a group of people. A culture can make up of
religion, food, interaction, lifestyle, language and more, which is brought about through
socialization. These aspects distinguish the different cultures. Learning and exploring new cultures
can give a new outlook on life, and sometimes make one appreciate their own. I explored the Yoruba
culture, their religion, holidays, relationships and family life, death, and social problems. Their

The religion in the Yoruba culture include christianity, islam, and the belief of deities. The religion
of the Deities is a more traditional one. They believe in a wide variety of deities including Oya

healing), Osun (goddess of fertility, protector or children and mothers), and Sango (God of thunder).
Individuals acquire their own deity known as an "Ori" which is responsible for controlling their
destiny. It is also common for Yoruba to turn to deceased parents and ancestors to protect their lives
as they are known as having the ability to do so. Many Yoruba still uphold these ancient religious
legacies today. The more recent religions of the Yoruba include Christianity and Muslim. When
Islam went over to Africa they used the military to spread the muslim religion throughout
Yorubaland. Many years later, after Islam in came about, Christianity was introduced by the Nigeria

The topic of Igbo culture was chosen due to the complicated relationships Okonkwo has between his
three wives, the way Okonkwo raises his children, and the description regarding the development of
his community over the years. Like stated above, the wives help the other wives around the house
and in the farm. This is displayed in the book when a description of the farm is being told, "The
women weeded the farm three times at a definite period in the life of the yams" (Achebe 33). This is
an action one woman could not do on her own. This topic was also chosen due to the immense detail
that is put into describing when the white men came into the villages. The invasion of them goes
along the similar lines of the British influence on the Igbo culture, changing many things in the
traditional culture to the white man's ways. In Igboland, culture is an important part of life that

Summary Of The Danger Of A Single Story By Adichie
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, author of, "The Danger of a Single Story," explains to her audience
how a single story can wrongly interpret a person because when we hear one side of a story we fail
to accept that there is another side of that story. We often hear "Don't judge a book by its cover"
because what is seen on the outside does not reflect a person's inside. One of Adichie most effective
devices of supporting the danger of a single story is her various exemplifications. Out of all her
personal stories, the only one that stood out the most was her new house boy, Fide, who her mother
spoken of as poor. When her mother told her about his family being poor and nothing about what his
family could do. She only saw Fide as one story and assumed that he was nothing more ... Show

Adichie began to judge Fide as poor because it was the only thing her mother announced him as
because of how he dressed and where he lived, but she never tried to reveal who Fide truly was for
herself. Until one Saturday she visited his village in Nigeria and was bamboozled by a "beautiful
patterned basket" Fide brother made. "All I had learned about them was how poor they were, so that
it had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor" (Adichie). Adichie then
understood how precarious a single story was. In addition Adichie uses a flashback to help the
audience better understand why judging a character can give a person false information. In the
passage, Adichie discuss her background about how she grew up in a middle–class family and on a
university campus in eastern Nigeria. She then goes to speak about her life in

changes to the artist and to society. Society is very different now than it was even ten years ago. I
agree and disagree with statements made in the article "Music can change the world" by Dana Da
Silva. People and societies change over time and music has to change with them.
I agree that music has come along way from what it used to be in the era of jazz and rock and roll.
Silva stated that "South Africa's Miriam Makeba and Nigeria's Fela Kuti have largely been
exchanged for party–hard, live–the–rich–life lyrics." Most artists now relate more to partying, drugs,
and the rich lifestyles and that is how today's society is. Comparing music from

Intro: The Ibo people have a civilized community because they have an organized structure to their
society with rules and laws. A society that employs morals, ethics, and accountability for peoples'
actions is not uncivilized. The importance of religion and communication, showing through art and
music, shows their advanced mindset as a whole society. The Nigerian country also shows these
qualifications, despite many beliefs that African countries are uncivilized, they are civilized as well.
Family must play a large part in the "civilized" culture. This shows civilization by explaining how
each member in a society is watched after and taken care of. Religion also must be taken seriously,
and there must be a majority of one religion in a society, or else the culture is too diverse. This
separates them from each other, halting any possible growing as a civilization.

Nigeria As A Country In The Country Of Nigeria
Nigeria a country located on the west coast of Africa that is divided into 36 States. The country itself
was not created until the British consolidated their colonial power in 1914; however all 36 states
wasn't established until 1996. Nigeria is known for over 527 Languages in which 7 are extinct.
Nigeria has a variety of ethnic backgrounds which range from Arabic to Western European.
Regardless of Nigerians social status being rural or urban; it is tradition to celebrate births and
weddings as well as congregate for funerals; which typically are withheld for a month to gives
families from different regions time to arrive back to the country. Nigerians celebrate common
holidays that's also here in America; however the dates are different, for example Independence Day

Nigerian culture, and is incorporated with celebrations such as festivals and rural events

The Importance Of Festivals And Holidays On Pre Colonial...
"Another area of Nigerian life that is practically unequalled by any other country's is in the way
festivals are celebrated" (Obi 136). Festivals and holidays have made a perpetual impact on Pre–
colonial and Post–colonial Igbo culture. As time has passed over the years, additional holidays of
the Igbo culture are celebrated and traditional aspects of festival celebration have been modernized.
Furthermore, some holiday and festival celebrations have altered based on its secular and religious
aspects. During Pre–colonial Igbo culture, the foundations of festival and holiday celebration were
established with one very special festival called the "New Yam Festival" being the most important
celebrations in Igboland. According to "Zaccheus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Libraries", the
"New Yam festival is celebrated between August and October in order of thanking the gods for a
good harvest and provides opportunity for a social gathering of tribes (Heritage and Culture).
Religion is exceedingly important to the Igbo's and the yam crop also known as the "king crop"
measured wealth in ancient Igbo society which is why the festival is highly significant. Based on the
book "Things Fall Apart" the most important god which tied to the festival was "Ani, the earth
goddess and the source of all fertility" (Achebe 36). If honor was not given to Ani, destruction from
weather would kill the crops which affected overall affected status of wealth. Another

While the rhythm sets the beat, the melody is the main creator of the characteristics. The melody
sets the tone, mood, and the story behind the song. Many songs feature complex melodies in order to
tell its story, but the melody is quite simple in "Oya (Primitive Fire)". The melody is played by
many different percussion instruments, and begins in the second section of the song. At first listen,
the song sounds more like different layers of rhythmic patterns, but the combination of these
patterns creates a distinct melody. Unlike in common western music, the melody is being created
through the use of layers and counterpoint rather than a solo instrument. This is very common in the
ancient African music that Olatunji learned. The melody is played in a pentomic scale, but because a
lot of Nigerian drum music is improvisation, it is difficult to identify the specific major or minor
scale.
The harmony is a harder concept to grasp in Olatunji's musical works because of the style of
Nigerian drum music. Nigerian drum music is commonly layers of instruments put together.
Because each instrument has its own leading role, it is hard to hear which instrument is specifically
harmonizing with the other instruments. In "Oya (Primitive Fire)" however, the harmony is a bit
more prominent; the harmony is played by the drums in section two. In this section there are two
sets of drums being played.

study in England. Nonetheless, when he returned to Nigeria, he is trapped between his tradition and
western culture. In the book, Achebe stresses a theme of colonial mindset through the refutation of
Nigerian culture, through the use of English and through the divinization of the white man.
Achebe highlights the presence of a colonial mindset in Nigeria throughout the book. Indeed, he
shows how colonialism affected Nigerian customs. For instance, ... Show more content on

This mindset elicited a modification of the Nigerian culture, a favoritism of English over local
languages and a deification of white man. These consequences altogether gave birth to a complex of
inferiority still perceptible in Nigeria through the music, movies, the use of British or American

only present in Africa but in almost all African countries. Therefore, the question that should be
asked is what the correlation between underdevelopment in Africa and colonial mindset

Who Is Felia
The rise of Fela and the Afrobeat music brand has been engraved in the heart of people across the
globe, most especially Nigeria. Celebration of Fela and his music is still held on a particular time
every year, in honor of the values he stood by, the courage he instilled on the people and the
entertainment it was meant for. From the very beginning of his career, Fela has strove to set a
standard in living the life he wanted and stick to his guns always. Each step he took was a turning
point and every challenged encountered was the motivating force his entire life as well as his career.
Fela was what one could call a trouble–maker, always ready to rebel against activities of authorities

One in which he could control and be in charge of his destiny. It actually played out just as he
envisioned it all through to the end and most these happenings were not even a shock those close
friends and family members. According to Lindsay, Fela did fulfil the prophecy implicit in that
earlier name change; and the manner of his dying was as dramatic and unruly as the manner of his
living. Lindsay further goes on to write about Fela's devastating illness and the weeks leading up to
Fela very end. Fela was well endowed with family members who specialized in several medical
areas yet rejected help for them all as well as western–trained doctors. "To the end Fela was a
conscious rebel. The themes of his rebellion never changed, and the anarchy which often seemed to
surround his life and music was always tempered by the fundamental truths which he sought to
elucidate with regard to both African society and the ongoing exploitation of people in African
nations." (Lindsay Barrett. "Fela Kuti: chronicles of a life foretold" The wire magazine march. 1998:

After his studies in the UK, returning back to Nigeria, Fela took up a unique music style although

The Unique People of Nigeria
There are many differences between societies in every country in the world. In Nigeria, the society
is vibrant and diverse. With over 370 ethnic groups, there are sure to be differences and similarities
between each group. The people of Nigeria are what make the country stand out from others.
Nigerian people have a unique culture, symbolic customs, and eventful daily lives.
Nigeria has a diverse, unique, and lively culture. Each ethnic group has their own culture, but all
have some similarities. The three largest ethnic groups are Igbo, Hausa–Fulani, and Yoruba, which
all have an appreciation of the arts. The Yoruba people have "developed a variety of different artistic
forms including pottery, weaving, beadwork, metalwork, and mask making"
(www.cometonigeria.com). The Igbo and the Hausa–Fulani both have strong musical influences.
The Igbo people's music focuses on "a melodic music style which incorporates various percussion
instruments" (www.cometonigeria.com), while the Hausa–Fulani enjoy singing "work songs", which
accompany them in the rural areas and markets. In the society of Nigeria overall, the culture
"reflects great changes in inherited traditions and adaptations of imported ones" (Falola and Udo).
The ethnic groups' cultures are influenced by inherited traditions. For example, the Nigerian people

Similarities And Differences Between The Cultures In...
According to Murphy (2011), cultural competence is having the "knowledge, attitudes, and skills
that support caring for people across different languages and cultures" (p.5). It is important to be
cultural competent when providing nursing care for patients because you never know who will be
laying in the bed. As a nurse, you will have to care for people from all walks of life no matter where
you work. In this paper, I will be discussing the similarities and difference between the cultures in
Mexico and Nigeria. Mexico is located in North America, just south of the United States. Nigeria is
located in West Africa.
In Mexico, men and women are equal in the eyes of the law. However, the man is head of the family.
Mexicans use two types of cultural representations to separate the male and female gender roles.
The male role is defined by machismo, which is described as violence, power, aggressiveness, and
assertive behaviors in sexual situations. For the female role, Mexicans use the Virgin of Guadalupe
as an icon. This virgin represents the suffering and sacrifice that women have to make daily for their
families. She also represents the submissive, but virtuous woman that Mexican women strive to be.
While some still follows these gender roles, the cultural is transforming with urbanization and the
roles are shifting ("Mexico", n.d.)
The Mexican culture is very family centered. The extended family is just as important as the
immediate family and provides stability within. The

The Musical Genre Of Afrobeat
In this essay, I will be examining the musical genre of Afrobeat which was created by Fela
Anikulapo Kuti. Afrobeat first came to be in the late 1960's during the Civil Rights Movement in
America. Fela Kuti a Nigerian, was able to create a genre that has change the way we view music
today. Afrobeat is made up of two different words, "Afro" and "Beat". "Afro" correlates with
"African organized sound while beat is a rhythmic counting pattern in relation to such music"
(Oikelome, 2013). Therefore, the meaning of Afrobeat is the unique African rhythmic patterns of
such music. The coming of this genre is very interesting since the man behind it has quite a story.
Fela Kuti's family background plays an interesting role in the making of Afrobeat. Fela's father was
a pastor and his mother was feminist activist active in the anti–colonial and anti– military
movements in Nigeria. "So at an early age, Fela experienced politics and music in a seamless
combination" (Dougan). Yet, he was sent to London for an education in medicine, however Fela
registered at Trinity College's school of music. Which led to the beginning of the creation of
Afrobeat. Afrobeat became a popular genre, due to its diverse Beliefs, Culture significance, and its
Composition in the late 1900's.

Cultural Culture Of Nigeria
Nigeria is located in West Africa along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and bordered by Cameroon
and Benin to the east and west respectfully. It is comprised of over 180 million and is considered
one of the most populated nations in the world. It is a nation that is ruled by a caste of politicians,
wealthy business men, and the educated elite. The rest of the nation is subjugated to sub–par living
standards and mediocre health care. At a glance one would think that Nigerians are doing well for
themselves as they have one of the largest economies on the continent; however most Nigerians are
forced to live in squander and are not given much of a chance to improve their lot. Nearly half of
Nigeria's population is made up of people that are not even considered adults in the United States.
With over five hundred ethnic groups Nigeria has an extremely diverse group although the Hausa,
Yoruba, Ibo, and Fulani make up nearly seventy percent of the nation. There is a minority of British,
American, East Indian, Chinese, white Zimbabwean, Japanese, Greek, Syrian and Lebanese
immigrants in Nigeria as well. (Simpson, 2008) Most immigrants are farmers, merchants, or
missionaries. With all the ethnic groups and immigrants there are nearly five hundred languages
spoken in Nigeria. English is the official language due to a brief British colonization which was
ended around Nineteen Sixty. Nigerian culture however did not suffer the same from British

Kites: Prisoner 1 And 2 By Lupe Fiasco
Introduction The theme of my summative is Kites. Kite in archaic mean a person who exploits or
preys on others. I got here through my past knowledge on the kite runner and searching the word
kite. Therefor I defined Kite as suppressing something or someone, and this brings me to Fela and
Nigeria. Fela was suppressed by his government for his desire of a free Nigeria, and he expressed
his desires trough his music Afrobeat. I picked the theme kites because it relates to me the most, for
I have read novels and articles about countries that are being suppressed. As well as I come from the
Middle East where the governments mostly try to suppress its people, I myself have origins in Iran,
a country suppressed by its government and religion. I believe kite symbolize freedom and to people
who are suppressed a kite flying is there is desire of freedom. For I kite fly's like birds, and birds
symbolize hope and freedom, therefor kite shares the same meaning. However a kite can also mean
suppressing those who hold it, for if a kite breaks, then so does your freedom. In my sources I well
be relating theme kite to Fela, and how he was suppressed. Part A Source 1 Prisoner 1 & 2 by Lupe

Ethnicity In Nigeria
Nigeria's three largest ethnic groups, the Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo, represent 71 percent of the
population because the remaining 300–plus ethnic groups go for the final one–fifth of the
population, and of the remaining 29 percent of the population about one–third consists of groups
numbering more than 1 million members each.Nigeria has many ethnic groups going from Yoruba
people, Igbo people, Fula people, Hausa people, and much more. Nigeria's people can speak at least
500 languages based on how many ethnicities there are and Hausa having the largest one. The main
ethnicities in nigeria is Yoruba , Ibo , and Hausa–Fulani. Apparently there are problems based on
ethnicity and religion that has been a problem since the British left. The culture aspect of nigeria for

Population Growth And Poverty: Nigeria
Population growth is one of the biggest issues that the human species can face no matter where it is
occurring in the world. For years ever since the 1960's, the world's population growth rate has been
rapidly increasing and in some cases doubling. With the rapid growth of population come many
challenges that people have to face and Nigeria is no exception. Nigeria, a country located in West
Africa, is the sixth most populous country in the world with a total population of over 167 million
(Rosenthal). The issues that Nigeria goes through as a result of population growth are just a few of
the issues that many other populated countries face worldwide. The high rates of unemployment,

So, in order to find a solution to this problem, people began to promote "birth spacing" and not
"birth control" meaning that people should only have more kids if they can support a larger family
rather than having a large family in poverty (Rosenthal). The high increase of fertility rate that led to
poverty was once done because Nigeria was agriculturally based and needed more people for
farming. This led to rapid growth and to stop this, family planning was introduced in the 1970s but
the money and attention on family planning later averted to Africa's AIDS problems. Although
Nigeria's replacement fertility rate had decreased, it is still quite high and with an extremely young
population, that can cause major problems. According to statistics, "Sub–Saharan Africa, which now
accounts for 12 percent of the world's population, will account for more than a third by 2100, by
many projections" if the fertility rate was to stay the same (Rosenthal).
Another factor that has arisen due to population growth is lack of health and education. As
Ovbiagele has said, frustration from poverty can create problems such as unwanted births,
abandonment of children and abortions. The people of Nigeria are making these mistakes of
continually having more children because of the fact that they are not educated. Having no

Slavery and The Tropicalia Movement in Brazil
Starting in 1538, nearly four million Africans were taken from Ghana, Nigeria, Angola, Congo and
Mozambique to be forced into slavery in Brazil's sugar plantations and mining industries. The slave
trade was eradicated in 1850, and by 1871 the Brazilian legislature passed the Law of the Free
Womb. This law was designed to grant freedom to slave's newborn children and served as a
precursor to the abolition of slavery in 1888. They made home for themselves in Brazil, as it had the
largest amount of African diaspora. Former slaves and their descendants established an Afro
Brazilian culture and the cultural traditions, notably musical, brought along with them inevitably
mingled with those of Brazil. They brought new rhythmic complexities and melodic patterns with
them, and were recognized for using music as way of bringing people together through communal
participation. Their musical traditions have maintained very well preserved and were legitimate
contributions to Brazil's culture. Afro Brazilian influences became fundamental components for a
new generation of musicians in Brazil, and pride in their African roots flourished for the first time.
On a typical evening in Brazil, an overabundance of vibrant rhythms and people on every corner are
embellished in eccentric fashion filled the streets. Percussion beats, bells, trumpets, whistles and
other instruments sound through the streets as people dance or play along. Music is a defining factor
of identity in Brazilian culture.

It relates to the mental conditionings and the ever increasing accessibility of information which we
keep on gathering and fail to relate in our daily life. The author juxtaposes two aspects in the novel,
one is about the propensity towards realism and interrelation with historical events and other is
propensity towards fictionality and reflexive self– examination. Cole uses Julius as a means to show
various aspects of the city, such as the activities going in the city, big tall buildings, restaurants,

anytime, and keeping this point in mind gives a different perspective about the novel apart from the
revelations made by Julius's contemplations. The book vividly reveals about urban history and

Women 's Role During The Pre Colonial Nigeria
Women have played an essential role in the pre–colonial Nigeria. Chinua Achebe exemplifies this
argument in his book, Things Fall Apart. Also, he emphasizes that British colonization in Nigeria
has expelled women from political, economic and other cherished roles. Before the British
colonization women took part in most of the aspects of life in Nigeria. Although women's role in the
pre–colonial Nigeria was not the same as the role of men, women were highly respected and valued.
Without women, Nigeria would never been able to survive because women played an important role
in Nigeria's future. Their roles were equally important and honored as the men's roles. British
colonization in Nigeria brought an irreversible change to the role of woman, leading them to lose
their value and power. Women's role was vital in pre–colonial Nigeria because it was harmonizing
with the role of men in teaching their children. Sylvia Leith–Ross, the author of African Women: A
Study of the Ibo of Nigeria, explains that "Culturally, African women were the transmitters of the
language, the history and the oral culture, the music, the dance, the habits and the artisanal
knowledge. They were the teachers and were responsible for instilling traditional values and
knowledge in children. Men were also essential in the transmission of knowledge to the youth

ENTERTAINMENT MEDIA ETHICS: MUSIC AND MUSIC VIDEOS
SECTION ONE: INTRODUCTION
Music is an important part of life. Its role as a form of art and entertainment is a significant one but
more important is that it serves to reflect and reinforce societal norms and values. It is not only used
to entertain but also serves as a form of social commentary (Baran, 2009). For instance, the
emergence of Rhythm and Blues (R&B) in America after the Second World War was a means of
advancing the black race and it helped blur the line between white and black as more young white
people became aware of the distinctions that existed in the society. The Hip–hop and rap of the

SECTION TWO: CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Music and Music Videos: Meaning and Purpose
Scholars have attempted to define music, and to be quite honest, it will be a huge challenge to try to
weave a definition around the art that is music, because it is beyond definition. However, for the
purposes of this work, we shall adopt the definition by Aluede & Eregare (2009), not because the
definition is, in itself, complete, but because it captures the very essence of what we look for in the
definition of music. Music, according to Aluede & Aregare (2009), is not only an organization of
sound but also a symbolic expression of a social and cultural organization, which reflects the values,
past and present ways of life of human beings. Also, Jones (1975), cited in Amana and Onogu
(2015), defines music as "a language which encodes emotions, aspirations and people's goals in
autonomous and self–expressive arts forms." These definitions are important in understanding
music, because they highlight the fact that music does not only appeal to the feel–good emotion, it is
not only used for entertainment; it is a valid form of social expression and this underscores the
centrality of music in African socio–cultural life.
The role of music in society can be best imagined when one thinks of a world without music. Music

There are three main ethnic groups; the Hausa, Yoruba and the Igbo. Each have their own beliefs
that they practice such as certain foods they eat, the kind of wedding they have and the religion
rituals they do. Weddings are also a big part of the culture because you have three main types,
known as the court wedding, white wedding and traditional wedding. Every girl no matter what
country they're in has excitement about their wedding day because it is a huge part of their life. The

Brooklyn Museum Article Review

  • 1. Brooklyn Museum Article Review Upon, my visit to the Brooklyn Museum on Wednesday October 12, 2016 I chose African Innovations instead of The European Art Exhibit. The country that my artifact originated from is Africa, the country is Nigeria. Nigeria is in West Africa, along the eastern coast of the Gulf of Guinea, and just north of the equator. The borders of modern Nigeria were not created until the British united their colonial power over the area in 1914. The name the piece I performed my article review on is called the Male Nok Head which is from the village of Nok, located in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The artist is unknown and it dates back to circa 550–50 B.C.E. The materials used for the construction of life–sized statue is Terracotta which is a baked clay. There isn't much known about the Nok people of ancient Africa. It is said that the Nok were a sedentary society, which meant they remained in one location. Nonetheless, they were very talented iron workers with refined iron forges and made complex iron tools. The Nok themselves create their advance iron work through smelting, which is the process of heating metal to extract it in a pure form. This made the Nok a vital part of local ... Nigeria is one of the most popular countries in Africa because of its economy, cultural diversity, ethnicity, movie– and music industry. It is also a member of the commonwealth Nations, African Union and the United Nations. Which implies that its under the English law (Common law). Nigeria is also called a multinational state, since it has over 5oo ethnic groups or tribes. The three major tribes are Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. Self –Determination versus Territorial Integrity The Biafra's did not have their Self –Determination, therefore they demanded the right for Self– Determination and the right to maintain their own territorial integrity because the Nigeria principle of territorial integrity was held over the Easter ants Self – Determination. In addition, since someone can argue that Self–Determination is a legal right it must be mentioned that Self–determination is not an entitlement to independence. This was just an entitlement to independence in time of colonialism. The viability of colonial boundaries in Africa At this time the received wisdom that African boundaries were non– negotiable. "The idea was that if the boundaries were successfully challenged it would create more agitation and therefore chaos in Africa and elsewhere as a result the OAU in cooperated in its charter the inviolability of African boundaries a clause which is defended with a great ceil. Ifemelu's Influence On Americah In Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel Americanah, the influence of home is very significant to Ifemelu, one of the main characters, for the reason being that she keeps in touch with her Nigerian roots even when she is away in the United States. Once Ifemelu reaches America, she tends to move around a lot, she stays in many different cities including Philadelphia, Baltimore, Brooklyn, and New Haven. Studying at Princeton she travels all the way to Trenton just to get her hair braided. This was a change in culture due to the fact that near Princeton there were not any real black locals. The ones that were considered to be black were often so light–skinned, Ifemelu never could have imagine them with braids in their hair. Getting her hair done in African braids is a way she can stay connected to back home. America was a new vibe for Ifemelu, different culture, people, music, and language. Nigerian political movements, media outlets, and trade unions whose purpose was the advancement of all Nigerians, not specific ethnic groups, became commonplace. the nationalistic movement grew out of some of the modernization the British had instituted in Nigeria. The educated elite became some of the most outspoken proponents of an independent Nigeria. This elite had grown weary of the harsh racism it faced in business and administrative jobs within the government. Both the elite and the uneducated also began to grow fearful of the increasing loss of traditional culture. They began movements to promote Nigerian foods, names, dress, languages, and religions. Increased urbanization and higher education brought large multiethnic groups together for the first time. As a result of this coming together, the Nigerians saw that they had more in common with each other than they had previously thought. This sparked unprecedented levels of interethnic teamwork. Nigerian political movements, media outlets, and trade unions whose purpose was the advancement of all Nigerians, not specific ethnic groups, became commonplace. As calls for self–determinationand a transfer of power into the hands of Nigerians grew, Britain began to divest more power into the regional governments. As a result of early colonial policies of divide and conquer, the regional governments tended to be drawn along ethnic lines. With this move to greater regional autonomy, the idea of a unified Nigeria became to crumble. • 9. Chimamanda Adichie's Speech : Do You Truly Know? Do You Truly Know? As a child, Chimamanda Adichie, born in Nigeria, began to write about what she had read in British and American children's books– a single story. Although never being outside of Nigeria, she composed the same, ideal foreign character within every story. When she first discovered African books, her outlook changed. She realized that people like her, with a darker skin complexion, could also exist in literature. (Tedtalks 2:11) Adichie's success in her speech was achieved in the sense of her style, tone, and the overall emotional appeal to the audience. Chimamanda Adichie's speech presents exceptional style. (Tedtalks 3:49). Adichie felt a great amount of pity for Fide's family. (Tedtalks 3:27). She realized she had stereotyped Fide off of what she had heard about him. In another story, she spoke about her American roommate. Her roommate was puzzled at the fact that Adichie could speak English so well, not knowing English is the official language in Nigeria. Adichie's roommate only knew one single story of Nigerians. "She assumed that I did not know how to use a stove. What struck me was this: She had felt sorry for me even before she saw me." (Tedtalks 4:38). Instead of feeling anger, Adichie understood why her roommate stereotyped her. If she had not lived in Nigeria, she too would feel empathy for the civilians. She stressed about how easy it is to stereotype, and that she had also labeled someone due to a misconception. Although her tone suggests empathy, Adichie brightened her speech with humor. Adichie could have told a gloomy, depressed story. Alternatively, she had an overall tone of humor. In a particular story, her roommate requested to hear her tribal music, as if every African sang and danced in ceremonies. Instead of feeling anger, Adichie thought of a comical joke to reply with. I was living with my father 's cousin for the mean time and my two younger sisters were staying with my mom 's friend. The news is now out in our little town, on the outskirts of Lagos. Are you going to America? That was the question most people kept asking me. I do not know was usually my reply, trying to be coy about it. There are other unfortunate students like him who cannot complete school for various reasons. The education system is good but not everyone is given a chance to learn. We also were not allowed to speak our local languages in school and the teachers referred to them as vernaculars. I have been afraid of teachers my whole life because I was conditioned to fear them. It took a technology company, Apple Inc., to take advantage of this pent–up demand by launching an online Web site (the iTunes Store) in 2003 to sell songs, and later videos, for play on the company's iPod portable digital media player, using the company's iTunes music program. By 2006 Apple had sold more than 100 million iPods, and more than 2 billion songs had been downloaded from the iTunes Store, with all of the songs paid for and the royalties returned to record companies and artists. Following Apple's lead, other commercial online music services were launched, such as those byAmazon.com and Microsoft. However, the largest record companies generally refused to participate or allowed only a small sample of their record catalogs to be sold online in digital form. One complaint by the music industry was Apple's flat pricing structure, in which all songs were sold for the same price. In 2008 Amazon.com negotiated a deal with most of the major record companies whereby their songs would be priced at different levels according to market considerations. Introduction The early childhood education is a field that has been rather slow to take up the challenge of sustainability; it has a potentially significant role to play not because of underlying concerns for children's welfare, but because of interest in children's environments and its attention to social justice. Recently, a new dimension has been added to early childhood education for sustainability (ECEfS) as an emerging national and international field, given a fillip with the launch of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005–2014) (UNESCO, 2005). Early Childhood Education for Sustainability (ECEfS) recognizes that young children have capacities to be active agents of change now, as well as in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his book The Great Didactic (1657) he introduced what is now considered one of the first descriptions of an educational system tailored for young children. In Comenius' view learning through the senses was the best way to teach during early childhood. He believed that before reading about the object of study a child should first touch, see, taste or hear it. According to Comenius, there should not be any gender or social class discrimination in education. He paid specific attention to individual differences among children; he believed that a child's development depended on his or her natural inclinations and that one and the same method would not work with each child. Comenius' system of education included four levels spanning from infancy to adulthood. Each level outlined the educational experience needed by a person at each stage of development. This idea was new and became the foundation of other scholars' works on the concept of early childhood education. Jean–Jacques Rousseau believed in education according to the ways of nature. He felt that education should be focused more on sensory and rational experiences than on literary and linguistic ones. One of Rousseau's most famous quotes proclaims that "Our first teachers are our feet, our hands and our eyes. To substitute books for all these...is but to teach us to use the reasons of others". • 17. The Negative Consequences Of Globalization And Culture Globalization brings more negative consequences that outweighs its benefits. One area it has really affected that gives me concern is "culture". "Globalization can be defined as the interaction and integration amongst people, companies and governments of different nations. Its a process that it's aided by international trade and investment and driven by information technology" extracted from ( globalization101.org) "Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts"(published on livesience by: zimmermann, July 12, 2017). Globalization has impacted so much negatively on culture. The section of culture I believe globalization has affected most is the fashion industry, language and the character of people world wide. Nigeria where I come from is a developing country and we see globalization as an opportunity for development. This has been one of the major mediums that has earned globalization the lands of Nigeria to dominate and our culture to alter. In the early centuries in Nigeria, women used to be known for wearing clothes that fully covered their body. And any woman seen in a cloth that exposes any sensitive part of her body(shape, breast, lap) was regarded as irresponsible and in most cases, regarded as a prostitute. Young boys were also known for wearing trousers that weren't tight on them or sagging . This is no longer the case since Nigeria embraced globalization. Today all over the streets of Nigeria, indecent dressing has captured the hearts of our youths and even the elderly. Our young girls now wear mini skirts, slacked blouse that exposes their breast, and also tight trousers all in the name of "civilization". And sadly enough even some married women Have adopted this pattern of dressing. This has lead to so many divorce and rape cases in Nigeria. Now, most guys consider sagging of their pants(trousers), wearing tight/ pencil trousers and earrings as fashion. These are things that was regarded in the early centuries as signs of madness and a show of indiscipline. Globalization has also impacted negatively on our language system. Our local dialects are no longer spoken and regarded the way it was in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to American Culture, "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things," said Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London. The United States is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. According to People & Culture, within its vast area, Nigeria has over 250 different ethnic groups, all with their own languages and heritage. Cultures are made and followed according to the society or family one comes from or was born in. According to "USA – Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquette, Americans are extremely informal, friendly, and call most people by their first name. Most people who come to the United States may already know a few things about the people through TV. Although this is of course a skewed reality some of the stereotypes are true, especially American friendliness and informality. People tend to not wait to be introduced, will begin to speak with strangers as they stand in a queue, sit next to each other at an event, etc. Americans are very casual in greeting. The disrespect towards the Yoruba goes back to the Nigerian Civil War times, where once the war was over, the finance minister, a Yoruba, gave each Igbo only 20 Euros. An amount that was not even comparable to how much was in their accounts. Later, Nwaubani applied to the University of Ibadan, which was in Torba territory. Summary Of The Danger Of A Single Story By Adichie Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, author of, "The Danger of a Single Story," explains to her audience how a single story can wrongly interpret a person because when we hear one side of a story we fail to accept that there is another side of that story. We often hear "Don't judge a book by its cover" because what is seen on the outside does not reflect a person's inside. One of Adichie most effective devices of supporting the danger of a single story is her various exemplifications. Out of all her personal stories, the only one that stood out the most was her new house boy, Fide, who her mother spoken of as poor. "All I had learned about them was how poor they were, so that it had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor" (Adichie). Adichie then understood how precarious a single story was. In addition Adichie uses a flashback to help the audience better understand why judging a character can give a person false information. The importance of religion and communication, showing through art and music, shows their advanced mindset as a whole society. The Nigerian country also shows these qualifications, despite many beliefs that African countries are uncivilized, they are civilized as well. Family must play a large part in the "civilized" culture. This shows civilization by explaining how each member in a society is watched after and taken care of. Religion also must be taken seriously, and there must be a majority of one religion in a society, or else the culture is too diverse. "Another area of Nigerian life that is practically unequalled by any other country's is in the way festivals are celebrated" (Obi 136). As time has passed over the years, additional holidays of the Igbo culture are celebrated and traditional aspects of festival celebration have been modernized. Furthermore, some holiday and festival celebrations have altered based on its secular and religious aspects. During Pre–colonial Igbo culture, the foundations of festival and holiday celebration were established with one very special festival called the "New Yam Festival" being the most important celebrations in Igboland. According to "Zaccheus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Libraries", the "New Yam festival is celebrated between August and October in order of thanking the gods for a good harvest and provides opportunity for a social gathering of tribes (Heritage and Culture). While the rhythm sets the beat, the melody is the main creator of the characteristics. The melody sets the tone, mood, and the story behind the song. Many songs feature complex melodies in order to tell its story, but the melody is quite simple in "Oya (Primitive Fire)". The melody is played by many different percussion instruments, and begins in the second section of the song. At first listen, the song sounds more like different layers of rhythmic patterns, but the combination of these patterns creates a distinct melody. Unlike in common western music, the melody is being created through the use of layers and counterpoint rather than a solo instrument. This is very common in the ancient African music that Olatunji learned. The melody is played in a pentomic scale, but because a lot of Nigerian drum music is improvisation, it is difficult to identify the specific major or minor scale. The harmony is a harder concept to grasp in Olatunji's musical works because of the style of Nigerian drum music. Nigerian drum music is commonly layers of instruments put together. Because each instrument has its own leading role, it is hard to hear which instrument is specifically harmonizing with the other instruments. In "Oya (Primitive Fire)" however, the harmony is a bit more prominent; the harmony is played by the drums in section two. In this section there are two sets of drums being played. ... It is important to be cultural competent when providing nursing care for patients because you never know who will be laying in the bed. As a nurse, you will have to care for people from all walks of life no matter where you work. In this paper, I will be discussing the similarities and difference between the cultures in Mexico and Nigeria. Mexico is located in North America, just south of the United States. Nigeria is located in West Africa. In Mexico, men and women are equal in the eyes of the law. However, the man is head of the family. Mexicans use two types of cultural representations to separate the male and female gender roles. The male role is defined by machismo, which is described as violence, power, aggressiveness, and assertive behaviors in sexual situations. For the female role, Mexicans use the Virgin of Guadalupe as an icon. This virgin represents the suffering and sacrifice that women have to make daily for their families. She also represents the submissive, but virtuous woman that Mexican women strive to be. • 45. The Musical Genre Of Afrobeat In this essay, I will be examining the musical genre of Afrobeat which was created by Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Afrobeat first came to be in the late 1960's during the Civil Rights Movement in America. Fela Kuti a Nigerian, was able to create a genre that has change the way we view music today. Afrobeat is made up of two different words, "Afro" and "Beat". "Afro" correlates with "African organized sound while beat is a rhythmic counting pattern in relation to such music" (Oikelome, 2013). Therefore, the meaning of Afrobeat is the unique African rhythmic patterns of such music. The coming of this genre is very interesting since the man behind it has quite a story. Fela Kuti's family background plays an interesting role in the making of Afrobeat. Fela's father was a pastor and his mother was feminist activist active in the anti–colonial and anti– military movements in Nigeria. "So at an early age, Fela experienced politics and music in a seamless combination" (Dougan). Yet, he was sent to London for an education in medicine, however Fela registered at Trinity College's school of music. Which led to the beginning of the creation of Afrobeat. I got here through my past knowledge on the kite runner and searching the word kite. Therefor I defined Kite as suppressing something or someone, and this brings me to Fela and Nigeria. Fela was suppressed by his government for his desire of a free Nigeria, and he expressed his desires trough his music Afrobeat. I picked the theme kites because it relates to me the most, for I have read novels and articles about countries that are being suppressed. As well as I come from the Middle East where the governments mostly try to suppress its people, I myself have origins in Iran, a country suppressed by its government and religion. I believe kite symbolize freedom and to people who are suppressed a kite flying is there is desire of freedom. For I kite fly's like birds, and birds symbolize hope and freedom, therefor kite shares the same meaning. However a kite can also mean suppressing those who hold it, for if a kite breaks, then so does your freedom. In my sources I well be relating theme kite to Fela, and how he was suppressed. For years ever since the 1960's, the world's population growth rate has been rapidly increasing and in some cases doubling. With the rapid growth of population come many challenges that people have to face and Nigeria is no exception. Nigeria, a country located in West Africa, is the sixth most populous country in the world with a total population of over 167 million (Rosenthal). The issues that Nigeria goes through as a result of population growth are just a few of the issues that many other populated countries face worldwide. So, in order to find a solution to this problem, people began to promote "birth spacing" and not "birth control" meaning that people should only have more kids if they can support a larger family rather than having a large family in poverty (Rosenthal). The high increase of fertility rate that led to poverty was once done because Nigeria was agriculturally based and needed more people for farming. This led to rapid growth and to stop this, family planning was introduced in the 1970s but the money and attention on family planning later averted to Africa's AIDS problems. Although Nigeria's replacement fertility rate had decreased, it is still quite high and with an extremely young population, that can cause major problems. According to statistics, "Sub–Saharan Africa, which now accounts for 12 percent of the world's population, will account for more than a third by 2100, by many projections" if the fertility rate was to stay the same (Rosenthal). Another factor that has arisen due to population growth is lack of health and education. As Ovbiagele has said, frustration from poverty can create problems such as unwanted births, abandonment of children and abortions. The people of Nigeria are making these mistakes of continually having more children because of the fact that they are not educated. Having no education, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Slavery and The Tropicalia Movement in Brazil Starting in 1538, nearly four million Africans were taken from Ghana, Nigeria, Angola, Congo and Mozambique to be forced into slavery in Brazil's sugar plantations and mining industries. The slave trade was eradicated in 1850, and by 1871 the Brazilian legislature passed the Law of the Free Womb. This law was designed to grant freedom to slave's newborn children and served as a precursor to the abolition of slavery in 1888. They made home for themselves in Brazil, as it had the largest amount of African diaspora. Former slaves and their descendants established an Afro Brazilian culture and the cultural traditions, notably musical, brought along with them inevitably mingled with those of Brazil. They brought new rhythmic complexities and melodic patterns with them, and were recognized for using music as way of bringing people together through communal participation. Their musical traditions have maintained very well preserved and were legitimate contributions to Brazil's culture. Afro Brazilian influences became fundamental components for a new generation of musicians in Brazil, and pride in their African roots flourished for the first time. On a typical evening in Brazil, an overabundance of vibrant rhythms and people on every corner are embellished in eccentric fashion filled the streets. Percussion beats, bells, trumpets, whistles and other instruments sound through the streets as people dance or play along. Music is a defining factor of identity in Brazilian culture. ... Cole uses Julius as a means to show various aspects of the city, such as the activities going in the city, big tall buildings, restaurants, music etc. Open City is additionally successful at sensationalizing the connection between objective and subjective experience. In one scene, Julius is stuck on a fire exit, high on the edge of Carnegie Hall. It's evening time. He finds himself lost in relativity, plunged between the wailing of an ambulance "reaching me from seven floors below" and "starlight that was unreachable because my entire being was in a blind spot". The book's title suggests that that the city is kind of vulnerable, that the enemy cam march in anytime, and keeping this point in mind gives a different perspective about the novel apart from the revelations made by Julius's contemplations. • 71. Women 's Role During The Pre Colonial Nigeria Women have played an essential role in the pre–colonial Nigeria. Chinua Achebe exemplifies this argument in his book, Things Fall Apart. Also, he emphasizes that British colonization in Nigeria has expelled women from political, economic and other cherished roles. Before the British colonization women took part in most of the aspects of life in Nigeria. Although women's role in the pre–colonial Nigeria was not the same as the role of men, women were highly respected and valued. Without women, Nigeria would never been able to survive because women played an important role in Nigeria's future. Their roles were equally important and honored as the men's roles. British colonization in Nigeria brought an irreversible change to the role of woman, leading them to lose their value and power. Women's role was vital in pre–colonial Nigeria because it was harmonizing with the role of men in teaching their children. Sylvia Leith–Ross, the author of African Women: A Study of the Ibo of Nigeria, explains that "Culturally, African women were the transmitters of the language, the history and the oral culture, the music, the dance, the habits and the artisanal knowledge. They were the teachers and were responsible for instilling traditional values and knowledge in children. Men were also essential in the transmission of knowledge to the youth because they had a different type of knowledge of the earth and environment, and also of ceremonies and traditions that were performed exclusively by ... • 75. Entertainment Media Ethics : Music And Music Videos ENTERTAINMENT MEDIA ETHICS: MUSIC AND MUSIC VIDEOS SECTION ONE: INTRODUCTION Music is an important part of life. Its role as a form of art and entertainment is a significant one but more important is that it serves to reflect and reinforce societal norms and values. It is not only used to entertain but also serves as a form of social commentary (Baran, 2009). For instance, the emergence of Rhythm and Blues (R&B) in America after the Second World War was a means of advancing the black race and it helped blur the line between white and black as more young white people became aware of the distinctions that existed in the society. The Hip–hop and rap of the 1980s and 1990s had almost the same effect, awakening in Black Americans a sense of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... SECTION TWO: CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK Music and Music Videos: Meaning and Purpose Scholars have attempted to define music, and to be quite honest, it will be a huge challenge to try to weave a definition around the art that is music, because it is beyond definition. However, for the purposes of this work, we shall adopt the definition by Aluede & Eregare (2009), not because the definition is, in itself, complete, but because it captures the very essence of what we look for in the definition of music. Music, according to Aluede & Aregare (2009), is not only an organization of sound but also a symbolic expression of a social and cultural organization, which reflects the values, past and present ways of life of human beings. Also, Jones (1975), cited in Amana and Onogu (2015), defines music as "a language which encodes emotions, aspirations and people's goals in autonomous and self–expressive arts forms." These definitions are important in understanding music, because they highlight the fact that music does not only appeal to the feel–good emotion, it is not only used for entertainment; it is a valid form of social expression and this underscores the centrality of music in African socio–cultural life. The role of music in society can be best imagined when one thinks of a world without music. Music serves as a personal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
