4. What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is a third-party integration to Brightspace
Used to check written submissions for similarity to
existing work, publications or websites etc
Flags suspect actions which may be aimed at
avoiding similarity checks
Also provides tools for grading and feedback
5. Turnitin for formative and summative
assessment
Turnitin ‘Draft Checker’ accessible from the
Brightspace Homepage
Allows students to view Similarity Reports for
drafts of their assignments prior to their final
submission
Helps students identify and rectify any
referencing issues
Draft submissions are not ‘remembered’, so will
not affect assignment submission
6. How does it work?
Comparison between the text of the assignment
submission against Turnitin’s database which
contains pages of active and archived internet
information, a repository of works previously
submitted to Turnitin, and tens of thousands of
periodicals, journals, and publications
7. What does the Similarity
Report show?
The percentage match of the assignment
against Turnitin’s repository of journals,
publications and internet archive.
Highlights potential problem areas that can then
be investigated.
8. How the Similarity Report
aids you
Ensures a level playing field when marking
Checks that online sources have been cited
correctly
Identifies collusion between students at different
UK institutions
Deters students from plagiarising work
Identifying re-sitting students
9. What do the Flags mean?
Hidden characters
Similar looking characters
11. What are Rubrics?
Rubrics are used to evaluate an activity or item based
on a predefined set of criteria.
12. Benefits
Using rubrics;
• Can speed up marking
• Can improve equity and marking consistency
• Students can use the rubric as a guide
• Students can identify how they achieved their
grade and what they need to improve in the
future
14. Attaching a Rubric
Note: an assignment submission must be set up first and
Turnitin enabled.
