OER Wales Cymru Project : A Collaboration to embed Open Educational Resources and Practice in the HE Sector in Wales (Paddling, getting wet and aiming to catch the good waves …)

Editor's Notes

  1. OER Wales Cymru is an all Wales project that is run by Higher Education Wales which is the body that represents the HE Sector in Wales. The project therefore involves all of the Welsh Universities as well as key sector agencies such as JISC and the HEA.
  2. Last Year Wales declared its intention to become an open education nation and signed the declaration of intent in September 2013. All the Welsh universities have signed up to the declaration and the OER Wales Project has been established as a direct result of the declaration and has been funded by HEFCW for £150,000 and this will run upto Jan next year. Higher Education Wales .(HEW) represents the interests of universities in Wales. HEW’s membership encompasses the Vice Chancellors of all the universities in Wales, and the Director of the Open University in Wales.
  3. The Welsh Government also commissioned a separate group to provide some key recommendations for the sector in relation to Online Digital issues. This resulted in the Online Digital Learning Working Group publishing their report in March this year .
  4. We need to develop a sustainability strategy and will be working together with our champions to look at this in our first Open Educational Practice Workshop which is in October. We will be working together to consider how to overcome some of the barriers that we face in using OER’s which impact on ability to engage with open educational practice.
  5. The curriculum was developed by a colleague from USW Denize Macintyre following focus groups with students. We have developed the sMOOC on MOODLE and now that we have a tangible working framework, the curriculum, content and design and format are also now being piloted with existing students who are returning to Year 2 this September. We are using an evaluation-research method in the sMOOC and the course will be constantly developed and updated for each iteration. The reason we are asking existing students to take part is that we will be pretty much guaranteed that they will know exactly what they ‘should’ have been told about when they started last year (as opposed to new intake students who wont know yet ... ) therefore we will hit the ground running hopefully. embedding open digital badges. Students will receive a Participation badge and Gold Badge after they complete the course. Students as Co-Creator Aspect. This will allow us to truly create a course with students, by students and for students.
