Meerkats
Meerkats: Standing Tall
Steven Fetherolf
Strayer University
Introduction
Standing tall, the small animal scans the sky for predators, his neck extended and head swiveling
side to side, ever diligent in the search for anything that may prove a threat to his group of fellow
meerkats. At his fullest height, he barely reaches 12", the average of an adult male in his species.
What is this strange animal, looking similar to a mongoose or an elongated squirrel and sporting
black "bandit" markings around its eyes that are vaguely reminiscent of a raccoon? What does
anyone know of this incongruous, oft–overlooked creature, whose comparable significance to more
exotic animals is virtually unknown? If you have watched the television channel ... Show more

This tolerance to venom ensures that the meerkat has little competition for its diet and further allows
them to maintain a steady, plentiful supply. Due to the harsh, water–scarce deserts in which
meerkats live, finding adequate water supplies is nearly impossible and when present, water is
dominated by larger animals that consider meerkats to be a meal. Therefore, the meerkat must make
use of available moisture and obtains its requirements primarily through its diet.
It has been observed that a gang of meerkats will inhabit underground burrows consisting of
numerous entrance and exit holes, multiple sleeping and birthing chambers, and having hundreds of
feet of tunnels branching off in several directions, which give them the ability to escape predators
who invade their homes. An average gang's burrow may have well over fifteen separate dens and it
should be noted that the number of areas provide them the opportunity to rotate their use every three
to four weeks. This rotation is a result of parasite (ticks, ants, fleas) overload, making living
conditions both unsafe and unsanitary. Once the parasitic levels have reached a reasonable level,
meerkats will re–inhabit the dens. At least one chamber within the burrow is reserved as a bathroom,
or litter box, serving as a safe place for relief of bodily functions. It is extremely unsafe for a
meerkat to exit the burrow at night to relieve themselves, so having a

12 Year a Slave Essay
Twelve Years A Slave Essay During a time of cruel punishment and harsh conditions of life as a
slave in the 19th century South, there was a book that shed a light on the life of a slave unparalleled
in past as well as in modern literature. That book was entitled Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon
Northup. Northup was born a freeman that was obtained from his father after being freed by the
Northup family due to loyal service. Growing up in the free state of New York, Solomon was
allowed an education that was rare because of the sad disposition of the majority of his race.
Solomon gained much knowledge of industry and hard work from his father. As a free man of color,
he enjoyed various jobs and hobbies from timber raft building to playing ... Show more content on

Northup and others were to be shipped to New Orleans. New Orleans had the biggest slave market
in the South. It was a place no slave ever wanted to encounter. Before arriving in New Orleans, they
made frequent stops at other slave pens to resupply goods and acquire more slaves. Escape always
came to mind while on the ship but never came to fruition, as opportunity was lost. Arriving in New
Orleans Northup was given the name "Platt" and placed in another slave pen similar to that in
Washington. While in the pen they were to be kept in a presentable manner, washed, shaved and
dressed in a cheap suit everyday. Slaves were instructed in moving to their spots and "looking
smart". Each slave was to stand in their spot while potential buyers viewed and analyzed them
thoroughly. Northup became well known for his violin skills, so much so that Freeman was able to
exploit such skills in pricing. However, after being exposed to small pox earlier from another slave,
Northup got deathly ill and was rushed to the hospital, decreasing his value. Though still weak, he
returned to the slave pen where he was sold to Mr. William Ford. Many different masters owned
Northup, but two to be discussed are William Ford and Edwin Epps. William Ford, a future Baptist
preacher and owner of a lumberyard, purchased Northup in the New Orleans. Ford lived in the

A Peasant’s Life
A Peasant's Life The peasant has always been looked upon as an object of pity, an underclass citizen
who worked to provide for the higher classes. A passage from Pierce the Ploughman's Creed gives
the perfect description of a day in the life of a peasant: As I went by the way, weeping for sorrow, I
saw a poor man hanging on to the plough. His coat was of a coarse stuff which was called cary; his
hood was full of holes and his hair stuck out of it. As he trod the soil his toes stuck out of his worn
shoes with their thick soles; his hocks on all sides and he was all bedaubed with muck as he
followed the plough. He had two mittens, scantily made of rough stuff, with worn–out fingers and
thick with muck. This man bemired himself in mud ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Behind each house was a garden or small plot of land. The common fields surrounding the village
were some distance away, divided into strips and separated by twigs and pieces of unplowed land.
Past the open fields was the waste, the uncultivated land which provided grazing land for the cattle,
sheep and pigs and also fuel and timber for building.11 Bread was the staple item of the peasant
diet. Eating meat was either a rare or nonexistent occurrence. Peasants ate whatever they grew:
grains and a small percent of vegetables and potatoes. Barley and oats were made into both food and
drink for consuming. The good grains, the meat from the animals, and the tasty fruits and vegetables
went to either the lords or to the upper classes.12 "The peasant's housing was as basic as his diet."
Most houses consisted of two rooms, one for living and one for sleeping. The walls were
constructed of clay or straw supported by wooden frames. The roofs were thatched and animals
were free to wander in and out. The smells of animals, sweat and waste were anything but pleasant
and were more than plentiful.Water was gathered from an outside well or spring and there was no
form of sanitation leading to a low level of personal

"Well, don't you look like the cat that ate the canary" Angelique said as she sailed from the bedroom
to the settee in the parlor of her townhouse. "I could say the same about you," I replied, referring to
her English lover. "You know nothing about Thomas Neville; do not judge him simply because I am
married to your father. Thomas and I go back a long ways – actually, he is the reason I am married
to your father." When she saw that I was listening, she continued. "I was about your age when
Thomas and I met. He was traveling the world writing his first novel... "The Tempest of Milan" was
the title. Naturally, my father thought Thomas below me because if his status, a plain and simple

the Place d' Armes later that night. "Don't forget," she said as I walked toward the door. "Enjoy it

1257, Life as a Villein Essay
1257, Life as a Villein
My name is Katie Longhair. I am twenty–one years old and I am a villein, that's with an 'e' not an 'a',
I'm no criminal you know. I live as a tenant on Lord Richard's land. That means that I have to pay
him rent to live there. However, I can not pay him in pennies because I haven't got enough, instead I
pay him with whatever I can spare off the farm.
I can see you're not from round these parts so let me tell you how life goes in this village. Villein is
just another word for peasant, and peasant life really is tough. All we seem to do is work. Us
peasants are an important part of feudalism. The King gave Lord Richard a share of his land and in

Next year the crops will all move round one field. The Lord keeps most of the land for himself but
all the villagers are allowed some strips of land in each field. They are spread around the field so
that we get a share of the best and the poorest land.
There's John the priest, He's a kind, caring man if ever there were one. He helps the sick or needy if
he can, not like some priests you hear of who drink too much and ignore their duties. We have to
give the priest a tithe that's what the barn over there is for. It can be hard having to give the priest
one tenth of all our crops each year, but I know he's not a selfish man so I don't mind.
That's my husband Alf, he hardly has the time to look after our own land and grow food for our
family. William Reeve has just told him to plough half an acre of the Lord's fields this week. As well
as that he has his week work, to hoe weeds every Monday, but I think we're going to get little Alfie
doing that soon, he's nearly six now and it's about time he started pitching in. Alf's boon work was
three days in June hay making, and three times a year he has to cart grain to another Manor and the
Lord can make him do as much extra work as he wants at seed–sowing time and harvest time. All
we get for all this work is our cottage and just 6 strips of land in the fields and if we annoy the Lord
in any way we could loose it all and

Run For The Manor Creative Writing
I step out of the dark hut that my family lives in and onto the grounds of my lord's manor, which are
being lit by the slowing rising sun. I see other people coming from their huts to the fields. There's
something that doesn't feel right. Not that there are people heading to the fields – that's our daily
lives. It feels odd because it is mostly women who are walking towards the fields, since many of our
men have left to fight battles with the lord of the manor. In fact, that is why I am walking to the
field, because my father and my brothers have gone to fight. I am now the only one of my family
who can go work in the fields. My mother stays and takes care of our baby brother and the other
children are too young to work in the fields. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A deep, loud sound echoing across my home. It can only mean one thing: Run for the manor. I
clutch my basket full of nuts as I race through the trees back to the main grounds. The horn would
only be sounded if the absolute worst happened – we were being attacked. As I near the main
grounds, I can hear the shrieks of the others as they drop what they are doing and being to run. It
may be my imagination, but I think I hear horses pounding against the earth. Just a little further. I
hear something crash into the fields behind me. Before I can see what it was, the lord of the manor
streaks past me with full armor on and his sword at his side. It seems his battles were not
successful... I am huddled in the corner with my family and our animals. My sisters are playing with
my baby brother and my mother is receiving orders from the lord of the house. I look out the
window to see what has happened. Our grounds appear to be untouched, except for the damage done
by our men rushing in. I wonder where the enemy is? "Listen children, the lord wants us to stay in
here and be quiet for awhile. We are going to have dinner and then go to bed." My mother looked at
all of us with worried eyes. It seems that our lord has failed in completely protecting

Farm Subsidies Essay
Agricultural subsidies is a very complex and controversial economic topic today. It will continue to
be a hot topic as government continues it. It is largely debated in the United States as well as in
other countries. The reason it is so largely debated is because it literally have an effect on the entire
world market. Not to mention that the farm has been booming the last 5 to 10 years. This topic also
tends to draw strong opinions in our area in particular due to the large agricultural community in our
region. However, even within different states there are many supporters as well as opponents to
these government subsidies. To really begin to understand this complex topic a person really needs
to understand the basics of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2002 wheat was $3.80 a bushel so farmer's received $.06 for the difference in the guaranteed
price and $.52 for every bushel of wheat they sold ("Farm bill resources, 2008"). The idea behind
the government subsidizing of agriculture is a good idea in theory. However, it is controversial
because there are many people who oppose this policy for different reasons. There are many reasons
why it is controversial but there are a few in particular that cause the most debate. One reason that
people do not support the subsidizing is because of the sheer cost. In 2009, the U.S. government
paid over 12 billion dollars to the agricultural sector (Vogel, 2001). When you consider that fact that
the payments are being made with taxpayer dollars it explains why some people immediately
oppose it. There have been past years where the government has actually paid double that. These
payments do consume a fair portion of our governments budget. Although it is not a confirmed fact,
a Canadian report said that for every dollar earned by a U.S. farmer, 62 cents comes from some
form of government payment (Wikipedia). Basically some people view this as nothing more than
transferring income from the general tax payers to farm owners. In fact, farm subsidies is actually
the United States' largest corporate welfare program. People also blame these subsidies for
increasing poverty in some

A Short Note On Merlin
"Ardeth! Your breakfast is ready!" blurted my lord, Merlin. As I finished picking carrots, I swept the
loads of sweat off my forehead, went over to the table, and saw Merlin dressed up in his linen coat.
He then took a piece of bread off my plate.
"I am going to meet up with another lord. I'll be back soon." He noted. "I need you to pick the
wheat, barley, and peas." I nodded slightly.
As I was eating a tomato that I picked, I was wondering why Merlin seemed frustrated. He is
usually in a good mood, and is not like any other lord. He is a warm hearted and good natured lord.
After breakfast, I went back to the fields and began picking wheat. It felt like it was a thousand
degrees. I looked up at the sky, and saw no sign of a single cloud ... Show more content on

"Oh, no one told you. Your Lord Merlin had died." She growled. I could tell she was secretly
smirking.
"Died? What do you mean died?" I squealed.
"He had a heart attack while riding in a horse carriage." I couldn't believe it. I was so lucky to have
a lord like Merlin, and now he's gone.
"So, now what?" I whimpered.
"Oh, I will be taking you." she bickered. I froze. I have to have her as my master? I couldn't imagine
having her as my master, she is about as mean as a snake.
After a long time of the lady signing papers, she told me to get all of my clothes. I walked to my
room and grabbed three dresses. One is for working in the fields, one is my nightgown, and one
extra just in case one of them gets ruined.
I walked into the livingroom, and as soon as the lady saw me, she grabbed my arm and pulled me
outside to her horse carriage. She seemed like she could be stronger than a gorilla, because of how
hard she pulled me. She pushed me into it and it began to move. I watched Merlin's manor get
smaller and smaller as we got farther away from it. Tears ran down my cheeks. I had such an
amazing lord, and he is now gone.
We then arrived at the lady's manor, with dark, mossy, old brick walls, and many small windows.
"Get out," commanded the lady. We walked inside her manor and she had me sit down in her living
room. "I haven't properly introduced myself," she goaded, "I am Madame Theutberga. And you will

NASHVILLE – They were born into it. But, what was once a 20 cow operation has grown into 150
cows and 700 acres. Spring Walk Farm, the name of which comes from the land and the spring by
which they would have to walk to get to the barn, was established just north of Nashville in the late
1800s by William Wachtel. It 's now run by the father–son team of Bill and Kurt, who inherited it
from William 's son and Bill 's father, Floyd. Floyd was born in 1918 to William and Lena, who
lived down the road from today 's main farmhouse. It 's the same home into which Bill and his two
sisters and Kurt and his two sisters were born. Bill and wife, Beverly, to whom he was married in
1963, moved into the main farmhouse when their children were young. Originally, William Wachtel
milked all his Guernsey cows by hand. It was Floyd who introduced portable milkers, which were
carted from stall to stall, with milk captured in buckets transported by hand to cans stored in a
cooler in the milk house. By this time, the number of cows milked on the farm had doubled. In the
1950s, a milking parlor was constructed and it 's in there, with pipelines running from each
stanchion to bulk tanks, the milk makes its way to await transfer into a cooler truck, which will haul
it away. And, while the job was getting more streamlined, it didn 't make adjustment to farm life any
easier for Beverly, who grew up as a city girl from Millersburg. "I was not a farm girl," she said,

Tolerating a sharp pain in my ankle, I hasten down the cobblestone streets of London. Using the
north star as my guide, I clutch an umber sack, dribbling with blood that stains my alabaster
nightgown. From the sack, I hear the faint sound of a heartbeat, causing me to shudder and cursing
myself for getting into this mess. If only I hadn't agreed to that wretched girl's contract. The contract
that could jeopardize the life that I have created for myself. As it was first proposed, the witch said:

"Your wish has been granted." She vanished. The next morning, I woke in a grand manor, with

favor." She murmured. "Kill the one whose heart is the most selfish, or you will have nothing, once
again." Instantly, I knew she was referring to Elizabeth, the one who cost me my old job all for less
competition. Who else could have a more selfish heart than her pitiful being? The witch further
continues her explanation. "Next, follow the north star, and find what land it radiates its light. Bury
the heart." "That's all?" "Yes." The little girl glares, looking at me like I'm a test subject she would
like to inspect. "I will sacrifice a life. It's in my best interest, is it not?" I asked agreeing to her deal.
"Perhaps. I will see you soon." Just as suddenly as she came, she vanished, and I was off. I quickly
put on a pair of leather boots, snatched a dagger from the games room, and emptied a bag of
potatoes for a bag. I ran out of my manor, and made my way downtown, using memory to scout out
the manor I'd worked in so many years ago. Once I found it, I snuck to the back of the manor and

Cloughbane Farm Shop Is Run By Lorna Robinson
Cloughbane Farm Shop
Introduction –
Cloughbane Farm Shop is run by Lorna Robinson, Sam Robinson and Robert & Richard Robinson,
Sam and Lorna's sons. The Robinsons have been farming at Cloughbane for around 150 years and is
now in its fourth generation. Up until 2002, it was, pure and simple, a farm, selling our beef, lamb
and free range eggs to wholesalers.
However in 2002 they were invited to be a founding member of the farm market set up in
Dungannon. At the market they sold their lamb and beef which they reared at the farm. They would
leave their lamb mature for 10–14 days on the bone and this was because they believed this gives it
a better taste. Their beef is left to mature for 28 days and this is to make it tender and also to gives it
a better taste.
Thanks to the setup of the Dungannon farm market they decided to start their own business selling
their goods at their own farm in a shop. They converted and old pig house in a shop which features
12–foot butchery serve over counter, three other chill cabinets for their own and other locally
sourced products. They also stocked fruit and vegetables plus some ambient lines.
This year Cloughbane farm shop was nominated for 2 awards at the Grow Make Eat Drink 2016
Awards. One of the awards they were nominated for was Best Small Food / Drink Producer and the
other award was Best Food / Drink Marketing Campaign.
Cloughbane have recently signs a contract with Tesco for their ready meals worth £450,000. This is

Cindy Eastwood's Case Study
Cindy Eastwood was a fifth grader who had moved from Boulder Elementary School in Montana all
the way to Orchard Hills Elementary School in Michigan for her mom's job. Cindy's parents had
relatives in Michigan who invited them to stay at their house until they found the right home to buy
since their family was really big. Throughout the weeks leading up to the first day of school, Cindy's
family had a limited amount of time trying to find the "right" house. Fast forward three weeks, the
Eastwood family had already bought their new home and registered for the upcoming school year.

Comparing George Orwell's 'Manor Farm To Animal Farm'
By changing the name of Manor Farm to Animal Farm, the animals are establishing dominance and
are saying publically that they now own the land. The change of name makes the territory of the
animals; and makes surrounding farmers aware of what has happened. The name change was also
the last step in the rebellion for freedom. 2. The animals were all so easy to except squealer's
explanation because they didn't bother to understand what he was saying and also didn't think for
themselves. They continued to remain naïve to the events surrounding them and place enormous
amounts of trust into the pigs. Many of the animals would have also been too frightened to question
what Squealer actually meant due to the pressure of the dogs that surrounded ... Show more content

The working class in Animal Farm can all been seen as incredibly naïve. The animals had a
tendency to do what was ordered and ask questions later; however by the time they began to
question the events it was already too late to ask. The animals often noticed the small changes the
pigs made, but never raised their voices to question it. An example of this was when clover noticed
that the fourth commandment, "no animal shall sleep on a bed", had been changed to "no animals
shall sleep on a bed with sheets". The pigs often took advantage of the working class animals and
were the only animals–apart from the dogs– who benefitted from it. Most animals were easily
persuaded and manipulated due to their lack of education; but also due to the fact that the pigs were
also far more intelligent. The fear and pressure that the pigs placed on the working animals lead
them becoming naïve and quiet towards any new events on the farm; leading them into deeper
poverty and poorer living conditions once

Addition of New Member– The Meerkat relate to the addition of family members as they take in all

Meerkat Manor: Hunter–Gatherers
After watching Meerkat Manor, I believe that the group of Meerkats, called Whiskers, most
resemble the hunter gatherers. To start off, the elders within the Meerkat group would continuously
hunt and gather the food for offspring and those who cannot take of themselves anymore. Just like
traditional hunter–gathers, the men would leave to gather the larger preys while the women would
stay and "babysit" the kids while gathering nuts, berries, herbs, and small prey which they would
use to feed the children of the group to take care and support them through their lives.
Furthermore, the hunter gatherers travel in large groups called hordes, which is what the whiskers
have been shown to do within Meerkat Manor. These large groups of Meerkat claimed land using
scent, and followed the rules that were set up the leader, who was usually a female within the
hunter–gatherer society. In this case, Flower was the head of the horde as she made the rules and
commands that the group must follow. For example, when Flower's offspring became pregnant, she

The Impact Of Working Environment At Drayton Manor
Impact of working environment
In addition to guarantee the working environment at Drayton Manor complies with health and
safety, employers should ensure the work environment is as comfortable as possible for its staff.
A comfortable work environment would be important to the staff at Drayton Manor because without
it if the employees of Drayton Manor 's are not comfortable that would lead to their productivity
levels being low therefore decreasing their profits levels. If Drayton Manor employers do create a
comfortable work environment employees would be productive meaning that their would be an
increase of the profits that Drayton Manor makes. To increase their employees productivity levels
the employers at Drayton Manor should increase their staffs motivation levels which would then for
sure make them work more.
Accidents that occur in the working environment at Drayton Manor would commonly be caused by
things such as falling objects, hand tools and moving objects.
When the employers at Drayton Manor carry out risk assessment they should consider the risk to
their employees of being struck by falling objects.
When employers carry out risk assessments, employers must consider the risk to employees of
being struck by falling objects.
An example of a potential falling object in an office or kitchen environment at Drayton Manor could
be in the Kitchens pantry maybe cans of stored products would fall onto an employees had causing
them harm and possibly a concussion.

The Pros And Cons Of Animal Welfare
Did you know that 56 billion animals are slaughtered each year? People believe that farmers are
abusing and causing stress on the animals. Farmers use confined feeding operations to maximize the
production. By having the confined feeding operations, it gives the animals no room to graze. When
they can't graze, it restricts the animal to move or to exercise ("On The Farm"). The animals are not
given any pain relief during certain practices like castration or dehorning. Animal welfare is not
needed in the farming aspect, because the animals are meant for food. In the 1970's, animal welfarist
got together and tried to sue farmers for being cruel and harming animals. The government created
the right to farm laws. That law protected farmers rights when farming. Twelve states banned certain
farm practices because they were believed to be inhumane. Those bans include, gestation crates for
sows, veal crates for calves, and battery cages for chickens. All those states that banned the practices
were small in the ag field. The farmers are saying that they are not hurting animals, they are
protecting them. People that live in cities or that don't experience the farm work will say it is
inhumane. Farmers are trying to make changes to stop these regulations. State Farm Bureaus are
trying backing up the farmers. The regulations could ruin the agricultural business (Fifield). Farmers
use the most efficient methods which lower the prices for the consumer. The other people would say

Analysis Of The Book ' Chapter One '
CHAPTER ONE She wasn't overly fond of driving, with the faith that one had to put in the other
drivers on the road and their ability to navigate it without incident. Wasn't overly fond of the early
morning traffic that she had spent the past hour in. Wasn't even overly fond of that corner market
coffee that she had purchased from that service station when it was she'd fuelled up earlier that
morning. Not that, considering the manner she'd awoken that morning, she was likely to be fond of
anything that day. Too many details to that dream that she had been trying so hard to banish from
her life. Too many questions attached to those that had already existed before it had shifted. All of
which was made worse by the trip she was taking and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

by factual, verified research. Didn't put stock into those theories concerning cats and their

a mug of tea and laughter. That ten minutes of missed sleep became her reality. That dream that
made no sense became her nightly companion... and it showed. Visible on her features, carved into

her life was slowly circling down that drain of her own psychosis. It also, she had learned, made her

Bly And The Mysteries Of Specter In Henry JamesThe Turn Of...
Bly and the Mysteries of Specter in Henry James' The Turn of the Screw Henry James' most
controversial novella The Turn of the Screw was first published in 1898. The first person narration
is well–known for its thrills, suspense, and the long–lasting uncertainties it leaves in the mind of
readers. Its inexplicable screws and turns have generated arguments among critics, centuries after its
publication, and the story has been analyzed from diverse perspectives – from psychological
analysis to literary allusion. The most fascinating part is how James deliberately create so much
ambiguity around the story and never clearly come out to readers about what he intends them to
believe. Hence, the big question of whether the governess is just a ... Show more content on

The governess' infatuation with her employer lays the foundation for her dangerous fabrication of
hallucination in the form of ghost sighting. The governess' infatuations produce the apparitions that
haunted Bly. In one of her first few days at Bly, the she is fantasizing about running into a kind of a
man who is most likely to be the uncle, and thereafter the first supernatural event occurs, she sees a
ghost. The apparition appears real, since the governess is able to give a vivid physical description of
what he looks like even before she heard about him, nevertheless, that his appearance occurs while
she was daydreaming about her possible interaction with the uncle, seems questionable. This
supernatural activity could be adjudged a display of the governess' torment and repressed mental
state. Edmund Wilson, in one of his 1938 essays entitled "The Ambiguity of Henry James" gave a
psychoanalytic perspective to the story. According to Wilson, "the Governess stands out as a
neurotic and sexually repressed woman, whose secret desires drive her to hallucination and not
sighting of real ghosts" (Edmund Wilson 90). Also, the governess' decision not to disclose her
experience to her colleague, Mrs. Grose, is an indication that the occurrence is merely born out of
her inner fantasy. While she still wallows in confusion of her strange experience, the ghost appears

In The Life Essay
⇨Day In The Life
–Kathrine/ Lord
¨Lady Kathrine, we're going to be late. Please, do hurry!" Michael shouted from down in the
common room.
My family and I were on our way to the Manor house in Holden of Wissilia, a large town that's
packed with people, animals, shops, houses, and children. Lord Clovis, my dead husband, declared
in his will that My family should live in the manor house of Wissilia, he found it charming Sadly
Clovis, and I only had two children, Gwen, and Leo. They are lovely children, but I barely have
time for them. There's the moving, the cooking, and the caring for other noble families, It's all too
much for me too even look at the children.

Clovis would still be alive if he hadn't gone to war. Understandable, he was trying to honor his
King, because as –all the lords he promised to fight in the war when the time comes. But there is
always war, especially now that there is a rebellion going on with all the pathetic people. They
disgust me.
"Mother, w–we a–are here," Gwen silently whispered, "y–you fell asleep."
I slowly lifted my head, we were here. Holden of Wissilia. Great name, if you don't know the
history. I strolled toward the front door when I heard a familiar voice calling my name.
"Kathrine," The voice bellowed. "Katherine, turn around!" I turned and saw my dear brother
Winstin!
"Brother, so glad you have arrived," I politely curtsied. "Where is the wife?"
"Dead. The Black Death fell upon her."
I nodded politely, "I am sorry, Brother."
"No big deal, I will just find the next lucky women," he gave me a low chuckle. "Well, let us go
inside."
I didn't quite understand why he was acting like that, as if he had done something to his dear wife;
that wasn't possible he loved her dearly– it seemed anyway.
I made my way in the manor house. Oh, how horridly it reeked of waste and rats. I hated this manor
so much, it was the worst of all the manors. Clovis had had an affair with another 'lady' – she was
down right a disgrace – and this was the manor house she gave birth in. Disgusting.
"Kathrine," growled Winstin, "who is this man?"
I gasped, "Dominic!"

Mudjacking – Which Method is Better? When it comes to concrete leveling, there are so many
options to choose from. So which method is better? We can compare mudjacking vs polyjacking, so
you can know the pros and cons of both methods. Mudjacking Mudjacking has been used for over
50 years to repair crumbling concrete slabs. During mudjacking, numerous holes are drilled in the
affected slab, then a thick cement mixture is injected in the holes. The mixture fills the voids and
lifts the slab to its original level. Once the slab is leveled, the drill holes are patched up with
concrete. Mudjacking is cost effective method if you are on a tight budget. However, it has a shorter
lifespan than polyjacking because the fill material loses density over time; therefore, settlement may
recur. Because there are numerous injection holes and larger holes, the repairs are more noticeable
compared to polyjacking. Polyjacking Polyjacking involves the same process as mudjacking except
it uses polyurethane instead of a thick slurry mixture. Because the material is lightweight, fewer and
smaller holes are drilled in the concrete

Literary Devices In The Importance Of Being Earnest
Elinor Fuchs sees the play as a world that passes in front of the critic in 'time and space'; one that
has elements that must be understood (Fuchs, 2004, p 6). These elements closely resembles
Aristotle's six elements of a play– plot, character, thought, diction, music and spectacle– elements
that are clearly identifiable in Oscar Wilde's 1895 play 'The Importance of Being Earnest'.
The play is divided into three scenes; acts as the author chooses to refer to them. The scene of these
actions is three different places: 1) a flat on a London city street– Algernon Moncrieff's living
quarters; 2) a manor house garden in Woolton where Mr. John Worthing, J.P and his charge Cecily
Cardew live; 3) and the drawing room at the Woolton manor house, ... Show more content on

Before this direct reference, the theme has only been alluded to when we notice how keen Algernon
is in keeping Lane at his proper social 'place'– a servant who does not discuss his domestic issues
with their boss or social betters. Romance is clearly a theme that the play deals with and is
introduced by the caustic reference to the relationship between his cousin and Mr. Worthington– 'My
dear fellow, the way you flirt with Gwendolen is perfectly disgraceful. It is almost as bad as the way
Gwendolen flirts with you'– clearly this cannot be anything else but love. The play is also very
concerned about the issue of extravagance. Algernon is an extravagant young man, a fact Mr.
Worthington does not appreciate and tries again and again to discourage when they discuss
Algernon's culinary tastes. Through the various comments by the characters the play reveals the
authors cynicism towards the marriage institution which he relentlessly attacks as the flippant 'in
married households the champagne is rarely of a first–rate brand' and through such play with words
as 'divorce was made in heaven' rather than 'marriages were made in heaven'.
Characters use a light hearted banter even as the issues they deal with are heavy– Algernon accuses
Lane of pilfering through a light rhetorical banter – 'Why is it that at a bachelor's establishment the
servants invariably drink the champagne?' The soliloquy is used to deliver profound thoughts like
where Algernon claims rights for

The Flame And Its Beauty
An immensely dense, dark fog covered the sky for many hours, intensifying in color with each long,
drawn out minute that passed. The only visibility of my surroundings that I had was from the tiny
spark of light created by my lantern. The delicate flame was keeping me company – while offering
me a source of comfort in the back of the shaky, jolting buggy. The flicker of the flame entranced
me, the slight warmth produced by it drawing me in. I sat there, studying the flame and its beauty. I
had never been one to fear the dark; the still of night was a beautiful contrast to the vibrant daytime.
Nightmares were things created and fabricated within the mind. The idea of fear was simply a
product of an overactive imagination, and I had been told to suppress the idea of any impossible
creatures lurking in the darkness of my room. My childhood years seemed to be a distant memory,
despite the reality only being a few years prior. A lot had changed since then; I had grown up too
fast, and tragedy had fallen upon me that had aged me beyond my years. I had been anxiously
awaiting the arrival at my mistress 's house since embarking upon the long journey at the first gleam
of morning sun. I had never had experience as a maid, nevertheless I was forced into this job as
most of my money was gone. I needed to find a way to take care of myself now that I had no family

Short Story Sequel To Pride And Prejudice
A short story sequel to Pride and Prejudice Darcy and Elizabeth have been married for three years.
Elizabeth felt extremely happy. It was not easy to manage such a big manor, but with innate
intelligence and clever, she soon became prevalent with everyone though there were several servants
expressing disdain for her origins in the first few months of marriage. Among the love to the new
hostess, Mrs. Reynolds loved Elizabeth the most. Mrs. Reynolds loved Darcy the same as loved her
own child. When she saw Darcy altering the habit of travelling around and beginning to live in the
home, her heart was saturated with gratitude for Elizabeth. Elizabeth enjoyed as hostess dignity and
grace in Pemberley. On condition that she expressed a willingness of any things she loved, Mr.
Darcy would do everything to gratify her. What's more, some of her wishes she does not show.
Nevertheless, as long as Mr. Darcy was conscious of what she had in mind, he would make every
effort to achieve the aspirations of his wife. Although they had been married for one year, he still
loved his wife very much. In Mr. Darcy's heart, the meaning of happiness is together with Elizabeth.
Because of Mr. Darcy's love and gratitude, Elizabeth argued that she should not just act as a
competent female owner's duty as compassionate servants and farmers like her husband, more
important was to take care of his sister Georgiana. Georgiana had no sisters, and her mother died
when she was overwhelmingly small. She had always been exceedingly humble and timid at home.
However, since her brother married, Georgiana had a pretty and clever sister–in–law. Elizabeth's
words and deeds gradually have good effects on Georgiana, for that reason she slowly opened up
mind. She loved the sister–in–law very much, and she treated Elizabeth like her own sister to love in
less than a year together, but also Elizabeth took Georgiana like her own sister. All this, Mr. Darcy
saw in the eyes. As a result, he loved his dear Elizabeth more and more. They loved each other very
much. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have always been so in love, but only on the premise of the biggest
quarrel since three days ago. Elizabeth lay down on the bed of a large goose and looked at

steadiness of character and tremendous powers of work. After the horses came Muriel, the white

instance, he would say that God had given him a tail to keep the flies off, but that he would sooner

he would say that he saw nothing to laugh at. Nevertheless, without openly admitting it, he was

The two horses had just lain down when a brood of ducklings, which had lost their mother, filed into

Impacts of Wyoming’s Agriculture on Economy
Wyoming's economy includes four main aspects: agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and service.
Among them, agriculture takes an important place in Wyoming's economy. It contributes numerous
billions to economy every year. There is a general evaluation of Wyoming's agriculture from a
website. "Historically, agriculture has been an important component of Wyoming's economic
identity. Its overall importance to the performance of Wyoming's economy has waned. However, it
is still an essential part of Wyoming's culture and lifestyle." (www. Wyoming.gov/narrative.aspx) It
shows the importance in Wyoming's culture and lifestyle. What it does not mention are the
economic impacts. They cannot be ignored, either.
This information illustrates the status quo of Wyoming's agriculture. "Historically, agriculture has
been important to Wyoming's cultural identity and the quality of life of its citizens... There currently
9,200 agricultural producers operating in Wyoming. Overall Wyoming agricultural production in
2001 amounted to $1.057 billion and of that sum; gross value added to the economy was $471.2
million."(Bittner, 2) "Agriculture contributes $800 million annually to Wyoming's economy,
approximately 80% of which is cattle production." (www.ourchildrenstrust.org/page/323/Wyoming–
economy) From the previous figures, we can see that agriculture occupies an important position in
Wyoming's economy. It increases economic growth and gross domestic product.

Original Writing Of The Phantomhive Manor
Some say that living in the Phantomhive Manor would be dull and boring. You didn 't think so. On
the contrary, there were things that occurred that made it quite amusing to live on the large estate.
One was the constant misfortunes that befell the servants, such as the breaking of a substantial
amount of dishes, or the accidental killing of an entire garden. These events were the result of the
servants ' own clumsiness, and in part, foolishness; it made the Phantomhive Manor so much more
lively and humorous than it would be without them. One more thing that amused you at the manor
was the head butler, Sebastian. When you first found the house, you were surprised to see another

After that incident, Sebastian made you apologize to his master, although you were rather annoyed

Sir John Soane Research Paper
The 19th century architect, Sir John Soane (1792–1824), is one of the greatest architects and
educators of the Regency era. Despite the Bank of England being his most renowned piece of
architecture, one should not forgot the architectural reputation of the 'Sir John Soane's Museum.' As
stated in the Oxford Dictionary of Architecture, the museum is "one of the most complex, intricate,
and ingenious series of interiors ever conceived." Clearly, without Soane's 'ingenious' and 'complex'
use of top–lit galleries and double – height spaces , the museum would lack it's originality and
inspirational qualities that make it one of the most distinctive museums in London. The atmospheric

The Soane style was not one to be reckoned with. Despite exploring all the classical styles of
architecture in his lifetime, Soane, abstracted these classical conventions to fit his own personal
interpretation , leading "towards a new freedom of architecture." It is this freedom that allows us to
disagree with the critical views of the 19th century, a time where Soane was indeed, "a great
architect who suffered for his originality and integrity. " Additionally, what people struggled to
realise was that no. 13 Lincoln's Inn Field functioned both as a house and as a museum for the study
of architecture, emphasising further the building was entitled to defy convention. As the curator for
the museum from 1945 to 1984, John Summerson understood that despite how deeply the criticism
affected him and the limitations put on his architecture at the time, Soane was successful in
achieving a sense of immortality, "surviving himself in the minds and thoughts of other men,
undying and imperishable (Hazlitt)." This is made clear through the existence of his museum; it is
Soane's most visible projection of himself, whereby the façade of no. 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields acts as
the beginning of a story expressing the embodiment of Soane as an architect. (200

Social And Economic Issues Around Small Farms
Since the founding of America, the small family farm has been a pillar of United States culture and
economics. These small generational farms were known for molding very capable, independent
families that were known for their morality, strong character, and high work–ethic. Urbanization,
industrialization, the growth of U.S. agribusiness, and other economic factors have slowly chipped
away at the presence of the U.S. small family farm. Technology and mechanization developed by
colleges, agribusinesses, and other government sponsored research programs have caused farm
supply to increase exponentially while farm demand grows at roughly the rate of population growth.
Most modern small farms are too commodity focused to compete in niche ... Show more content on

Many of these younger workers often see farming as an antiquated profession and relatively
unprofitable. The draw of higher education and the bright lights of city life are constant distractions
pulling them away from the less "exciting" rural life of farming. Without a generation of farmer to
replace the last many small farms are sold and developed commercially or absorbed by larger
commodity driven farms that surround them. Technological advancements have been a strong driver
of change in agriculture over the last 100 years. "Technology is, in fact, the key force driving the
shift of farm activities off farms" (Smith, 1992, p. 8). After the World Wars, mechanical
advancements were made at a rapid pace. "Advances in mechanization and increasing availability of
chemical inputs led to ever–increasing economies of scale that spurred rapid growth in average farm
size, accompanied by an equally rapid decline in the number of farms and in the farm and rural
populations" (Dimitri, Effland, & Conklin, 2005, p. 6). Essentially, the use of mechanization has
dramatically increased the supply of agricultural products while also drastically reducing the size of
the necessary workforce. "The amount of capital used per farmworker increased 15 times between
1930 and 1980, permitting a fivefold increase in the amount of land cultivated per farmer"

D. Conclusions: ODI has sufficient evidence to target large farms have 50,000 chickens or over, and
focus on market in California and south Atlantic region in the short term and set an initial high price
of about $0.28 per pair. Although it may appear that ODI may have risk of introducing new
products, this option is actually safest and most profitable for expected sales and penetration. Risk
of reluctance to acceptance new technology, low trained salesforce and new competitors in the
future may lead this strategy less efficient. It is suggested that ODI decrease the selling price of the
lenses in the long term and focus on improving the quality and services and build a solid premium
brand image in order to guarantee market share in the future. It would be better to find multiple
ways of advertising and increasing the customers ' awareness and accessibility of products.

Language In The Dark Knight
In the film The Dark Knight, the director Christopher Nolan uses many language features to
effectively highlight the contrast between good and evil, and that people have both good and evil
within them. One of the most significant scenes that highlights these ideas is the scene where Bane
has been knocked to the ground by Batman which crosscuts with the flashback scene of Miranda
and Bane's past.
The language features character actions, camera work and characterisation, helped me see the
contrast between good and evil, and how people have both good and evil within them, in the scene
where Batman has knocked Bane to the ground and is viciously punching him. As Batman is doing
this, Nolan has angled the camera at a low angle on Batman to make him look big, scary, ... Show

Nolan wants us the audience to see that no one is perfectly good, not even Batman because he
abuses people even though it is for a good purpose. Nolan wants us to see that not even someone as
righteously good as Batman, is perfectly good, they still have their evil flaws. Understanding this
makes us humans feel scared and aware that even friendly and nice people, like ourselves, can be as
violent and scary as Batman was.
Nolan uses the language features crosscutting, camera work, costume and symbolism to highlight
the contrast between good and evil and that people have both good and evil within them in the
flashback scene, where we see that, as a child, Miranda was saved by Bane from people who were
attacking the people in the pit she was in, Bane included. After we, the audience, see this, the scene
crosscuts to a scene of the present. Nolan uses a close up camera shot on Bane's face so that we see
the tear that rolls down his cheek. By crosscutting the scene where Bane saves Miranda, with the
close up of Bane's face, our perspective on Bane's character changes and we see the contrast
between good and evil in him. Throughout the film, Nolan had us convinced that Bane was just pure
evil,

Pippin Analysis
On Sunday, November 5th, I viewed the W.T. Woodson production of the musical Pippin. The script
for Pippin was originally written by Roger Hirson and the music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. It
was first performed at Carnegie Mellon University and later on Broadway. The Theo Ending, which
was not part of the original production, was written by Mitch Sebastian. Although the production
itself was excellent, I think the idea of Pippin was slightly better than the scripting. The concept of
Pippin having a dual life could have been presented more clearly, and several points in the plot are
seemingly nonsensical until much later after having watched the play. Some, such as Charlemagne's
rebirth, still seem strange, unless you view all the characters as simply players trying to make
Pippin's life more difficult so he goes through with the finale. However, this script does not present
this idea clearly enough to notice this during the play. The scripting is almost insignificant and only
allows for transitions between the songs, although, as a musical, this is not entirely unexpected. The
songs were very well written and expressed the emotions of the character/s in consideration very
well. The scripting often took away from these moments with vague, poorly put pieces of
information that seemed to mainly serve as transitions. If looking at this as a plot map, instead of
having a steady rising action, it goes up and down from interesting points (typically the songs) to
less important,

Food In Medieval Times
Food. humans depend on it , without food, everyone would end up dying. People in the medieval
times did not have McDonalds or Burger King, no, they made a foundation to the food humans eat
today. Gathering food for the kings and peasants was difficult , it required hard work and
determination, but in the end, the kings and peasants received their food, and food was changing the
world. Society dramatically changed due to peasants and kings eating different food options, feasts,
and the Black Plague.
For those living in the manor house, there was a ride range of food available. According to
medieval–life.net, "Fowl such as capons, geese, larks, and chickens were usually available to the
lord and his family." This was because those living in the manor house were so high up in the social
class, that they had these food options. themedievalclassroom.com states that " Vegetables and fruits
were not often part of their diet as they were seen as peasant ... Show more content on

Melitta Weiss Adamson writes in her book "Food in Medieval Times", "Aside from the diners, the
"actors "in the spectacle that was a medieval feast were the household staff." (162). This shows that
there were many key contributors for a medieval feast. "From the top down they included the
steward, who ran the entire household, the marshal, who was his chief official at dinner, the head
waiter and the taster, known as the sewer, the head of the pantry, known as the pantler, the person in
charge of the drinks, known as the "butler," the ewerer in charge of the hand washing and linen, the
carver, and the lord's cupbearer. This shows that the lord of that time had my "actors" that each had
a specific job to help the lord. (162). "but at royal feasts, noblemen would be given some of the
royal duties, but at royal feasts nobleman would be given some of the serving duties in the hall."

CHAPTER 4 PUTTING TOGETHER THE PIECES
Lord William I is the Lord of the lands in Abalone. He was married to Lady Madison. The lands
were peaceful then. Ordina and Lady Madison were childhood friends and very close. So, Madison
requested that Ordina be by her side at the time of her giving birth. Ordina considered it a great
honor to become her confidant, as well as her midwife. Madison gave birth to a handsome boy
whom she named Christopher William after his father. Charles was in his glory at the birth of the
new heir. He started teaching him very young, all there was about the art of combat. As well as, how
to be a proper lord and the politics that goes with it. Some years later, in a time of great despair, war

The royal doctor could not figure out what the ailment was or how to cure them. They tried many
different remedies with no effect. Desperate for his wife to get well, he again requested the help of
Madison's childhood friend, to see there was anything her remedies could do. She spent many days
and nights trying to heal her very sick friend, whilst being mocked and snickering "witch or
sorceress" as she pass through the halls of the manor house. Unfortunately, after many days of
fighting Madison passed away due to the illness. A few weeks later, an old and ragged looking mule
entered the gates of the manor house. On its back, we're the bodies of Sir Rose and Christopher. At
this point, Charles he had lost his wife, his heir to the throne, and best friend. This is where his
mentally stressful life started to affect him. Charles was on most occasions, not able to make
rational decisions. Ordina was once again called upon to make an antidote that would prolong
Charles's pain and ill temper. This time she succeeded. Eventually, Charles remarried another local
lord's daughter (Leila) and within the year she became pregnant with William George Elton III. With
the doctors gone tending to other wounded soldiers, Ordina was requested to be her midwife. But
during delivery, again something went wrong and Leila died giving birth. After an examination by
another local doctor it was concluded it was due

There are a few key aspects of dairy farming that need to be monitored carefully or result in
unwanted outcomes. This includes the voltage on the fences around the farm, the temperature of the
milk that is in the vat and the activity of the water pump. A constant monitoring system of these
three important farming aspects could improve farm profitability. A mobile phone application will
be designed to incorporate monitoring of these three activities. If the fences do not have the required
voltage on them this can result in animals escaping and injuring themselves. This can be difficult to
monitor as currently to do this you are required to be on the farm using a fence tester. The milk
temperature is required to be below 7 degrees Celsius within 3 hours by the milk company to ensure
it is safe for human consumption. This is done through using chiller machines as if the milk does not
reach this temperature in time the entire vat full of milk must be disposed of which causes a loss of
income for the

Meerkats

  • 1. Meerkats Meerkats: Standing Tall Steven Fetherolf Strayer University Introduction Standing tall, the small animal scans the sky for predators, his neck extended and head swiveling side to side, ever diligent in the search for anything that may prove a threat to his group of fellow meerkats. At his fullest height, he barely reaches 12", the average of an adult male in his species. What is this strange animal, looking similar to a mongoose or an elongated squirrel and sporting black "bandit" markings around its eyes that are vaguely reminiscent of a raccoon? What does anyone know of this incongruous, oft–overlooked creature, whose comparable significance to more exotic animals is virtually unknown? If you have watched the television channel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This tolerance to venom ensures that the meerkat has little competition for its diet and further allows them to maintain a steady, plentiful supply. Due to the harsh, water–scarce deserts in which meerkats live, finding adequate water supplies is nearly impossible and when present, water is dominated by larger animals that consider meerkats to be a meal. Therefore, the meerkat must make use of available moisture and obtains its requirements primarily through its diet. It has been observed that a gang of meerkats will inhabit underground burrows consisting of numerous entrance and exit holes, multiple sleeping and birthing chambers, and having hundreds of feet of tunnels branching off in several directions, which give them the ability to escape predators who invade their homes. An average gang's burrow may have well over fifteen separate dens and it should be noted that the number of areas provide them the opportunity to rotate their use every three to four weeks. This rotation is a result of parasite (ticks, ants, fleas) overload, making living conditions both unsafe and unsanitary. Once the parasitic levels have reached a reasonable level, meerkats will re–inhabit the dens. At least one chamber within the burrow is reserved as a bathroom, or litter box, serving as a safe place for relief of bodily functions. It is extremely unsafe for a meerkat to exit the burrow at night to relieve themselves, so having a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. 12 Year a Slave Essay Twelve Years A Slave Essay During a time of cruel punishment and harsh conditions of life as a slave in the 19th century South, there was a book that shed a light on the life of a slave unparalleled in past as well as in modern literature. That book was entitled Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup. Northup was born a freeman that was obtained from his father after being freed by the Northup family due to loyal service. Growing up in the free state of New York, Solomon was allowed an education that was rare because of the sad disposition of the majority of his race. Solomon gained much knowledge of industry and hard work from his father. As a free man of color, he enjoyed various jobs and hobbies from timber raft building to playing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Northup and others were to be shipped to New Orleans. New Orleans had the biggest slave market in the South. It was a place no slave ever wanted to encounter. Before arriving in New Orleans, they made frequent stops at other slave pens to resupply goods and acquire more slaves. Escape always came to mind while on the ship but never came to fruition, as opportunity was lost. Arriving in New Orleans Northup was given the name "Platt" and placed in another slave pen similar to that in Washington. While in the pen they were to be kept in a presentable manner, washed, shaved and dressed in a cheap suit everyday. Slaves were instructed in moving to their spots and "looking smart". Each slave was to stand in their spot while potential buyers viewed and analyzed them thoroughly. Northup became well known for his violin skills, so much so that Freeman was able to exploit such skills in pricing. However, after being exposed to small pox earlier from another slave, Northup got deathly ill and was rushed to the hospital, decreasing his value. Though still weak, he returned to the slave pen where he was sold to Mr. William Ford. Many different masters owned Northup, but two to be discussed are William Ford and Edwin Epps. William Ford, a future Baptist preacher and owner of a lumberyard, purchased Northup in the New Orleans. Ford lived in the "Great Pine Woods" of Avoyelles Parish by the ... • 3. A Peasant’s Life A Peasant's Life The peasant has always been looked upon as an object of pity, an underclass citizen who worked to provide for the higher classes. A passage from Pierce the Ploughman's Creed gives the perfect description of a day in the life of a peasant: As I went by the way, weeping for sorrow, I saw a poor man hanging on to the plough. His coat was of a coarse stuff which was called cary; his hood was full of holes and his hair stuck out of it. As he trod the soil his toes stuck out of his worn shoes with their thick soles; his hocks on all sides and he was all bedaubed with muck as he followed the plough. He had two mittens, scantily made of rough stuff, with worn–out fingers and thick with muck. This man bemired himself in mud ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Behind each house was a garden or small plot of land. The common fields surrounding the village were some distance away, divided into strips and separated by twigs and pieces of unplowed land. Past the open fields was the waste, the uncultivated land which provided grazing land for the cattle, sheep and pigs and also fuel and timber for building.11 Bread was the staple item of the peasant diet. Eating meat was either a rare or nonexistent occurrence. Peasants ate whatever they grew: grains and a small percent of vegetables and potatoes. Barley and oats were made into both food and drink for consuming. The good grains, the meat from the animals, and the tasty fruits and vegetables went to either the lords or to the upper classes.12 "The peasant's housing was as basic as his diet." Most houses consisted of two rooms, one for living and one for sleeping. The walls were constructed of clay or straw supported by wooden frames. The roofs were thatched and animals were free to wander in and out. The smells of animals, sweat and waste were anything but pleasant and were more than plentiful.Water was gathered from an outside well or spring and there was no form of sanitation leading to a low level of personal ... • 5. 1257, Life as a Villein Essay 1257, Life as a Villein My name is Katie Longhair. I am twenty–one years old and I am a villein, that's with an 'e' not an 'a', I'm no criminal you know. I live as a tenant on Lord Richard's land. That means that I have to pay him rent to live there. However, I can not pay him in pennies because I haven't got enough, instead I pay him with whatever I can spare off the farm. I can see you're not from round these parts so let me tell you how life goes in this village. Villein is just another word for peasant, and peasant life really is tough. All we seem to do is work. He helps the sick or needy if he can, not like some priests you hear of who drink too much and ignore their duties. We have to give the priest a tithe that's what the barn over there is for. It can be hard having to give the priest one tenth of all our crops each year, but I know he's not a selfish man so I don't mind. Alf's boon work was three days in June hay making, and three times a year he has to cart grain to another Manor and the Lord can make him do as much extra work as he wants at seed–sowing time and harvest time. There are many reasons why it is controversial but there are a few in particular that cause the most debate. One reason that people do not support the subsidizing is because of the sheer cost. In 2009, the U.S. government paid over 12 billion dollars to the agricultural sector (Vogel, 2001). When you consider that fact that the payments are being made with taxpayer dollars it explains why some people immediately oppose it. There have been past years where the government has actually paid double that. These payments do consume a fair portion of our governments budget. Although it is not a confirmed fact, a Canadian report said that for every dollar earned by a U.S. farmer, 62 cents comes from some form of government payment (Wikipedia). Spring Walk Farm, the name of which comes from the land and the spring by which they would have to walk to get to the barn, was established just north of Nashville in the late 1800s by William Wachtel. It 's now run by the father–son team of Bill and Kurt, who inherited it from William 's son and Bill 's father, Floyd. Floyd was born in 1918 to William and Lena, who lived down the road from today 's main farmhouse. It 's the same home into which Bill and his two sisters and Kurt and his two sisters were born. Bill and wife, Beverly, to whom he was married in 1963, moved into the main farmhouse when their children were young. Originally, William Wachtel milked all his Guernsey cows by hand. It was Floyd who introduced portable milkers, which were carted from stall to stall, with milk captured in buckets transported by hand to cans stored in a cooler in the milk house. By this time, the number of cows milked on the farm had doubled. In the 1950s, a milking parlor was constructed and it 's in there, with pipelines running from each stanchion to bulk tanks, the milk makes its way to await transfer into a cooler truck, which will haul it away. The Robinsons have been farming at Cloughbane for around 150 years and is now in its fourth generation. Up until 2002, it was, pure and simple, a farm, selling our beef, lamb and free range eggs to wholesalers. However in 2002 they were invited to be a founding member of the farm market set up in Dungannon. At the market they sold their lamb and beef which they reared at the farm. They would leave their lamb mature for 10–14 days on the bone and this was because they believed this gives it a better taste. Their beef is left to mature for 28 days and this is to make it tender and also to gives it a better taste. An example of this was when clover noticed that the fourth commandment, "no animal shall sleep on a bed", had been changed to "no animals shall sleep on a bed with sheets". The pigs often took advantage of the working class animals and were the only animals–apart from the dogs– who benefitted from it. • 17. The Pros And Cons Of Animal Welfare Did you know that 56 billion animals are slaughtered each year? People believe that farmers are abusing and causing stress on the animals. Farmers use confined feeding operations to maximize the production. By having the confined feeding operations, it gives the animals no room to graze. When they can't graze, it restricts the animal to move or to exercise ("On The Farm"). The animals are not given any pain relief during certain practices like castration or dehorning. Animal welfare is not needed in the farming aspect, because the animals are meant for food. In the 1970's, animal welfarist got together and tried to sue farmers for being cruel and harming animals. The government created the right to farm laws. That law protected farmers rights when farming. Twelve states banned certain farm practices because they were believed to be inhumane. Those bans include, gestation crates for sows, veal crates for calves, and battery cages for chickens. All those states that banned the practices were small in the ag field. The farmers are saying that they are not hurting animals, they are protecting them. People that live in cities or that don't experience the farm work will say it is inhumane. Farmers are trying to make changes to stop these regulations. State Farm Bureaus are trying backing up the farmers. The regulations could ruin the agricultural business (Fifield). Farmers use the most efficient methods which lower the prices for the consumer. The other people would say that the most efficient way goes against the animal's welfare. When using the high welfare methods it raises the price of eggs by 18% which is about 49 cents per dozen. Walmart and McDonalds will be using only cage free eggs by 2025. That will increase the price of the eggs. They cages and crates are said to be safe and sanitary ways for egg production. Makes the price of food increase because the farmer can't have as many animals because it requires too much space to be humane (Fifield). Gestation crates are the safest way for a sow to give birth. In one of her first few days at Bly, the she is fantasizing about running into a kind of a man who is most likely to be the uncle, and thereafter the first supernatural event occurs, she sees a ghost. The apparition appears real, since the governess is able to give a vivid physical description of what he looks like even before she heard about him, nevertheless, that his appearance occurs while she was daydreaming about her possible interaction with the uncle, seems questionable. This supernatural activity could be adjudged a display of the governess' torment and repressed mental state. Edmund Wilson, in one of his 1938 essays entitled "The Ambiguity of Henry James" gave a psychoanalytic perspective to the story. The Black Death fell upon her." I nodded politely, "I am sorry, Brother." "No big deal, I will just find the next lucky women," he gave me a low chuckle. "Well, let us go inside." I didn't quite understand why he was acting like that, as if he had done something to his dear wife; that wasn't possible he loved her dearly– it seemed anyway. I made my way in the manor house. Oh, how horridly it reeked of waste and rats. I hated this manor so much, it was the worst of all the manors. Clovis had had an affair with another 'lady' – she was down right a disgrace – and this was the manor house she gave birth in. Disgusting. "Kathrine," growled Winstin, "who is this man?" I gasped, "Dominic!" He bowed and

When it comes to concrete leveling, there are so many options to choose from. So which method is better? We can compare mudjacking vs polyjacking, so you can know the pros and cons of both methods. Mudjacking Mudjacking has been used for over 50 years to repair crumbling concrete slabs. During mudjacking, numerous holes are drilled in the affected slab, then a thick cement mixture is injected in the holes. The mixture fills the voids and lifts the slab to its original level. Once the slab is leveled, the drill holes are patched up with concrete. Mudjacking is cost effective method if you are on a tight budget. However, it has a shorter lifespan than polyjacking because the fill material loses density over time; therefore, settlement may recur. Because there are numerous injection holes and larger holes, the repairs are more noticeable compared to polyjacking. Polyjacking Polyjacking involves the same process as mudjacking except it uses polyurethane instead of a thick slurry mixture. Because the material is lightweight, fewer and smaller holes are drilled in the concrete ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Literary Devices In The Importance Of Being Earnest Elinor Fuchs sees the play as a world that passes in front of the critic in 'time and space'; one that has elements that must be understood (Fuchs, 2004, p 6). These elements closely resembles Aristotle's six elements of a play– plot, character, thought, diction, music and spectacle– elements that are clearly identifiable in Oscar Wilde's 1895 play 'The Importance of Being Earnest'. The play is divided into three scenes; acts as the author chooses to refer to them. The scene of these actions is three different places: 1) a flat on a London city street– Algernon Moncrieff's living quarters; 2) a manor house garden in Woolton where Mr. John Worthing, J.P and his charge Cecily Cardew live; 3) and the drawing room at the Woolton manor house, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before this direct reference, the theme has only been alluded to when we notice how keen Algernon is in keeping Lane at his proper social 'place'– a servant who does not discuss his domestic issues with their boss or social betters. Romance is clearly a theme that the play deals with and is introduced by the caustic reference to the relationship between his cousin and Mr. Worthington– 'My dear fellow, the way you flirt with Gwendolen is perfectly disgraceful. It is almost as bad as the way Gwendolen flirts with you'– clearly this cannot be anything else but love. The play is also very concerned about the issue of extravagance. Algernon is an extravagant young man, a fact Mr. Worthington does not appreciate and tries again and again to discourage when they discuss Algernon's culinary tastes. Through the various comments by the characters the play reveals the authors cynicism towards the marriage institution which he relentlessly attacks as the flippant 'in married households the champagne is rarely of a first–rate brand' and through such play with words as 'divorce was made in heaven' rather than 'marriages were made in heaven'. Characters use a light hearted banter even as the issues they deal with are heavy– Algernon accuses Lane of pilfering through a light rhetorical banter – 'Why is it that at a bachelor's establishment the servants invariably drink the champagne?' The only visibility of my surroundings that I had was from the tiny spark of light created by my lantern. The delicate flame was keeping me company – while offering me a source of comfort in the back of the shaky, jolting buggy. The flicker of the flame entranced me, the slight warmth produced by it drawing me in. I sat there, studying the flame and its beauty. I had never been one to fear the dark; the still of night was a beautiful contrast to the vibrant daytime. Nightmares were things created and fabricated within the mind. The idea of fear was simply a product of an overactive imagination, and I had been told to suppress the idea of any impossible creatures lurking in the darkness of my room. My childhood years seemed to be a distant memory, despite the reality only being a few years prior. It was not easy to manage such a big manor, but with innate intelligence and clever, she soon became prevalent with everyone though there were several servants expressing disdain for her origins in the first few months of marriage. Among the love to the new hostess, Mrs. Reynolds loved Elizabeth the most. Mrs. Reynolds loved Darcy the same as loved her own child. When she saw Darcy altering the habit of travelling around and beginning to live in the home, her heart was saturated with gratitude for Elizabeth. Elizabeth enjoyed as hostess dignity and grace in Pemberley. On condition that she expressed a willingness of any things she loved, Mr. Darcy would do everything to gratify her. What's more, some of her wishes she does not show. Nevertheless, as long as Mr. Darcy was conscious of what she had in mind, he would make every effort to achieve the aspirations of his wife. Although they had been married for one year, he still loved his wife very much. In Mr. Darcy's heart, the meaning of happiness is together with Elizabeth. Because of Mr. Darcy's love and gratitude, Elizabeth argued that she should not just act as a competent female owner's duty as compassionate servants and farmers like her husband, more important was to take care of his sister Georgiana. Georgiana had no sisters, and her mother died when she was overwhelmingly small. She had always been exceedingly humble and timid at home. However, since her brother married, Georgiana had a pretty and clever sister–in–law. Elizabeth's words and deeds gradually have good effects on Georgiana, for that reason she slowly opened up mind. She loved the sister–in–law very much, and she treated Elizabeth like her own sister to love in less than a year together, but also Elizabeth took Georgiana like her own sister. All this, Mr. Darcy saw in the eyes. As a result, he loved his dear Elizabeth more and more. They loved each other very much. After the horses came Muriel, the white goat, and Benjamin, the donkey. Benjamin was the oldest animal on the farm, and the worst tempered. As the curator for the museum from 1945 to 1984, John Summerson understood that despite how deeply the criticism affected him and the limitations put on his architecture at the time, Soane was successful in achieving a sense of immortality, "surviving himself in the minds and thoughts of other men, undying and imperishable (Hazlitt)." • 39. Pippin Analysis On Sunday, November 5th, I viewed the W.T. Woodson production of the musical Pippin. The script for Pippin was originally written by Roger Hirson and the music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. It was first performed at Carnegie Mellon University and later on Broadway. The Theo Ending, which was not part of the original production, was written by Mitch Sebastian. Although the production itself was excellent, I think the idea of Pippin was slightly better than the scripting. The concept of Pippin having a dual life could have been presented more clearly, and several points in the plot are seemingly nonsensical until much later after having watched the play. Some, such as Charlemagne's rebirth, still seem strange, unless you view all the characters as simply players trying to make Pippin's life more difficult so he goes through with the finale. However, this script does not present this idea clearly enough to notice this during the play. The scripting is almost insignificant and only allows for transitions between the songs, although, as a musical, this is not entirely unexpected. The songs were very well written and expressed the emotions of the character/s in consideration very well. The scripting often took away from these moments with vague, poorly put pieces of information that seemed to mainly serve as transitions.
