Still Falls The Rain
Symbolism is used throughout literature in order to create a certain mood or emotion in a work of
literature. It is the use of an object, person, situation, or word to represent a certain idea. In the poem
"Still Falls the Rain" by Edith Sitwell, she uses symbolism to represent the Second World War. "Still
Falls the Rain" is a religious poem that shows war as being sinful, and how people should turn to
God for help. The entire poem revolves around the rain which symbolize the bombs from the Battle
of Britain. The words "dark", "black", and "blind" create a dark, gloomy mood which can be linked
to the great sorrow and mourning of lost loved ones throughout the war (lines 2–3). "The Starved
Man hung upon the Cross" is used to symbolize al–Messiah,

Nursing theories began more than a century ago with Florence Nightingale and began to flourish
around the 1800's, when education became the central focus of nursing (Current Nursing, 2012).
Although several definitions and variations of theories exist, generally speaking nursing theories

Analysis Of ' And Mary Shelley 's ' Frankenstein '
Intertextuality is a literary technique that weaves together and creates a relationship between two
texts, enriching the reader of the primary text with a look into history, and the ability to further
interpret what they are reading. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED Online)
"intertext" is defined as "A text considered in the light of its relation to other texts;" ("intertext" def.
1), meaning that intertext is when a text is better understood by having knowledge of the text that it
alludes to. In Mary Barton, Elizabeth Gaskell uses intertextuality to further demonstrate key
concepts present in the text by alluding to works of other famous authors, well known biblical
passages, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. By doing this, she effectively shows how the
relationship between the working class and the middle to upper class must be compassionate and
understanding of their shared connection in order to be successful. The use of allusions in this text is
both a formal and thematic technique. Appendix C of the Oxford World's Classics edition of this
novel provides two of William Gaskell's lectures on Lancashire dialect, showing the ways in which
he and Elizabeth intensely studied the origin of words from this region. Here, he focuses on tracing
the history of words, everything from who created it first, where it has been used since then and the
ways it is used in Lancashire at the time of the lecture. The reason this point is so important and
interesting is

Essay On The Forsaken: A Hero's Journey
Journey of The Forsaken
Killing people isn't easy ... or so they say. But I never saw it that way. Ever since I was a kid, people
said I lacked empathy, that something was wrong with me ... as I grow older, I come to realize the
same myself.
Other people place too much value on human lives, even that of the worst scum, so I have taken it
upon myself to cleanse the world of this scum. The only thing better than getting to kill the ones that
don't deserve to live? Getting payed for it. I was good at it, maybe a little too good. I started to get
more famous, more and more people were hiring me, but I was not careful enough. This is where I
made my mistake..
A simple job i was told. Silence a well known name, get a hefty reward. A kill I could easily do,
before anybody noticed what was going on. There was one problem. Me. Professional integrity, they
call it.. Unfortunately my employers didn't think i could keep my mouth shut. They held a
celebration for a successful execution. I drank and next thing I know I'm on the way to the land of
the forsaken.
Ibanez, known as the land of the forsaken is ruled over by Gerard, the highest rank of the order of
the divines. They send criminals here to rot and die in exchange for not having the death penalty.

What Is The Theme Of The Poem Planned Suicides
The poem has a tight, intricate rhyme scheme interlacing all three stanzas: abcd, abcd, abcd, a feet in
itself, but the effort shows in the limp line :"Soon they'll be ruffled," which fits the subject but
strains for its rhyme , and the weak "a" and "d" rhymes, especially the latter, push the poem,
inappropriately, toward humor. The point of view in the poem is an impersonal telling, distanced
until the "we" of the last line. Her poem has obvious strengths–a firm opening line with a powerful
verb, alliteration and the musical, a slow build– up to the strangeness of the penultimate line, the
terror of the close – – and more concealed effects. The juxtaposition of indifferent nature, night, out
there, against the apparently ordered hospital, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her last stanza, once again, she deepens the whole situation, gives more universal meaning, by
drawing on Christian symbols:
Final Considerations
Oh, Judas hanging on the tree was close
To Christ in time; in pain perhaps also.
He had the chance to make his peace, God knows,
But only God knows why he had to go
Swinging upon the rope. Men suffer so;
I am with them now who revive but chose. (201)
A third poem, "Personal Easter," again focused on her attempted suicide, is completely interwoven
with the Christian significance of Easter. The opening is more dramatic and striking than usual and
the whole sustained by a type of lyric anger and despair. Only the last line with its awkward
transitive verb form and pulled stress on "Limbo" breaks the strong tone and effectiveness of this
poem.
Personal Easter
Let them bring gifts, let them bring pious eggs.
There are no kings at Easter, only men.
Two nights ago, we drained cups to the dregs
And did not know if we should live again.
The stars move on, we battle with our plagues.
What god will rise now from the frozen

other topics in between. In the first section of chapter 13 the book explains not only the precise
definition of stress but also the ways one can become stressed.Society defines stress as anything
which forces us to change. Though technically stress is defined as "a negative emotional state
occurring in response to events that are perceived as taking or exceeding a person's resources or
ability to cope." . However, stress used to be defined as "the physiological response to harmful or
treating events." This idea of a negative experience creating stress is not applicable today because

We all deal with theses hassles different however they all result in some kind of stress resulting in
health issues. In occurrence with this stamens : researchers have found that the daily hassles people

our body as stress over time that lead to health problems including feeling "drained. grump and
stressed out". Gender can also play a part in what one stresses about and how each deals with stress.
Women are more likely to stress about friends and family, leading them to deal with it by
discussions with their partner. However men stress typically about work or school, leading them to
simply withdraw to sustain from getting more stressed. Even though work stress is typical see in
more men than women it does produce " a significant toll on your physical health". For instance a
college student who works harder and works harder than average can burnt out leading to feeling
exhausted, angry, inadequate. These work burnouts can be prevented when there is a "sense of

Managing Organisational And Individual Change Essay
Managing Organisational and Individual Change (Reflection)
20th of January 2008 is to date the biggest life change I have had. It was a Saturday and I was
playing an important tennis match when I fainted. I woke up in Kings College Hospital Camberwell
South London. I had fainted because my blood sugar levels where too high and I was diagnosed
with type 1 diabetes.
This is not a change I wanted or asked for but had to accept. (Buchannan and Huczynski 1985
pp.14, 15) define learning as "The process of acquiring knowledge through experience which leads
to a change in behaviour". Being diagnosed with diabetes involves learning, "Kolb's learning cycle
1984" activist stage describes individuals that want to dive into the swimming pool and see what
happens, I guess I was more forced into this learning stage rather than wanting to be in this stage.
One psychological theory I can relate to my experience of change is Piaget's theory of cognitive
development which involves 4 different stages. (Blake, B. and Pope, T. 2008).
Equilibrium, Accommodation, Assimilation and disequilibrium. Individuals are comfortable in a
state of equilibrium as they can take information and either assimilate or accommodate into pre–
existing schemes Equilibrium (Agnes, 1999, p. 1282). Assimilation is the process of using new
information in the environment so it can be placed in pre–existing cognitive structure.
Accommodation is the process of changing cognitive structures in order to accept

Sylvia Carrh : A Biography Of Sylvia Plath
"Why can't I try on different lives, like dresses, to see which one fits me best and is most
becoming?" Sylvia Plath once asked in The Journals of Sylvia Plath (Plath 38). Any reader of Sylvia
Plath can instantly recognize Plath's dislike for her life and all that comes with it. Plath grew up with
the realities of death in the forefront because of her father's passing at a young age and her struggles
with at least one mental illness. Much like her characters in her many works, Sylvia Plath struggled
from mental illnesses, such as depression and, possibly, anxiety. Sylvia Plath is famously known for
committing suicide and the "Sylvia Plath Effect", the term coined by James Kaufman, PhD in 2001.
The Sylvia Plath Effect considers the possibility that creative minds, such as writers, poets and
artists can be more susceptible to mental illnesses. Though plenty of studies have not found a causal
link, popular psychology has come to continue the stereotype that poets are generally depressed or
anxious. While Plath is 'famous' in a general sense for this more commonly known information, her
literary work published throughout her life and posthumously is arguably more impressive.
Because The Bell Jar is semi–autobiographical, we are given insight into the younger years of
Sylvia Plath and have general ideas of how she managed her depression. After numerous suicide
attempts, Plath eventually succumbed to her depression and killed herself on February 11th, 1963 at
thirty years old. She left behind her forty–poem manuscript of Ariel on her desk, as well as an
additional nineteen poems, that her husband later published two years after Plath's death. Leaving
the poems behind allowed for Plath to control the narrative of her life, as the poems from "Ariel"
have a noticeable separation between the speaker of the poems, and Sylvia Plath herself.
Plath's desire to try on different lives not only encapsulates the feelings of the writer, but also her
characters with her works, The Bell Jar and "Ariel", specifically, "Lady Lazarus. Like her characters,
Plath wishes for the ability to have more control over who she is and her experiences because trying
on different lives would allow her to eventually choose the life she

An Analysis of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock Essay
The editors of anthologies containing T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" invariably
footnote the reference to Lazarus as John 11:1–44; rarely is the reference footnoted as Luke 16:19–
31. Also, the reference to John the Baptist is invariably footnoted as Matthew 14:3–11; never have I
seen the reference footnoted as an allusion to Oscar Wilde's Salome. The sources that one cites can
profoundly affect interpretations of the poem. I believe that a correct reading of Eliot's "Prufrock"
requires that one cite Wilde, in addition to Matthew, and Luke, in addition to John, as the sources for
the John the Baptist and Lazarus being referenced. Furthermore, the citation of these sources can
help explain Eliot's allusion to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed,
Though I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in
upon a platter,
I am no prophet––and here's no great matter... (81–83)
The reference is not only to Matthew 14:3–11, but also to Oscar Wilde's Salome, the play upon
which Richard Strauss based his opera Salome. In the biblical account, no motivation is ascribed to
Salome for wanting John the Baptist killed. In the versions by Wilde and Strauss, however, Salome
is passionately in love with the imprisoned John the Baptist, who, because he will not let the
temptations of the flesh corrupt his pure love of God, rejects her advances. Wilde's Salome,
determined that if she cannot have John no one will have John, asks Herod for the Baptist's head on
a platter. John the Baptist spurned Salome's affections while he lived; now that he is dead, Salome
lavishes her kisses upon the cold lips of the bloody corpse–head.
Prufrock, too, has had his moments of temptation: he has "known the arms already, known them
all–– / Arms that are braceleted and white and bare / (But in the lamplight, downed with light brown
hair!)" (62–64). And these very sources of temptation, these "arms that lie along a table, or wrap
about a shawl" (67), eventually emasculate Prufrock by rejection:

Mary Barton Essay
Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell serves as a portrait detailing industrial life during the Victorian
period. The Victorian period was the highest point for industrialization in England. With the increase
of industry and growth of urban areas there was social and political unrest within these areas
primarily, in working class people who had suffered through great mistreatment and unfair
distribution of power. Mary Barton is a story that embodies the political philosophy of its author,
Elizabeth Gaskell: The effect of urbanization and industrialization within urban and rural areas, the
complex relationship between the upper and working classes, in particular the employer and
workers, and the social and political unrest that stems from the ... Show more content on

Gaskell also uses not only her own political ideas to formulate her characters and setting, but, she
also uses different opposing political ideologies, such as communism, to create greater character
dynamics and more complex characterizations such as John Barton and Mr. Carson. John Barton,
the father of Mary Barton, is truly the main character in the novel. The primary function of John
Barton's character is to serve as Gaskell's advocate for better communication between the social
classes. He served as the manifestation of class conflict. Also, he embodies the political philosophy
of Gaskell with religious ideology and the communistic ideology of Karl Marx. This duality of
political ideologies can be seen in John Barton in him being a "chairman at many a Trades' Union
meeting, a friend of delegates, and ambitious of being a delegate himself; a Chartist" (25).
The Chartist movement and those involved advocated for the right to vote to be extended to working
class men. So, that working class people could have a voice in parliament. They also advocated for
the elimination of the secret ballot to eliminate voter intimidation. And the narrator states that "John
Barton became a Chartist, a Communist, all that is commonly called wild and visionary" (169). This
meant that he wanted more representation for the workers in working environments such as in the
factories. Another thing that he wanted

A Tough Mind And Tender Heart Analysis
A Tough Mind and a Tender Heart Martin Luther King Jr., a prominent American minister and civil
rights activist, argues that the combination of a tough mind and a tender heart is essential to end
segregation and racism (MLK 13–14). For example, King defines a tough mind as one that is able to
think sharply and decisively and make realistic judgements (MLK 14). Having a tough mind gives
one the ability to discern what is true from what is false on their own without blindly accepting what
they are told (MLK 14). Toughmindedness is essential as shown by how Hitler took advantage of
people by recognizing their softmindedness and therefore using appeals to their emotions to mold
and control them and not logic or reason (MLK 16). Given that a tough ... Show more content on

For example, Bethune showed her tough mind from a young age, walking five miles each day to her
local school because she was so passionate about learning things for herself (Riggs 127). Also, in
support, Bethune's tough mind is evident as she attempted to break down major racial barriers,
encouraging African Americans "to claim their place as full American citizens" (Riggs 127). Lastly,
given her efforts to oppose segregation in the Red Cross, she encouraged African Americans to
volunteer in World War I (Riggs 127). Similarly, after the Nineteenth Amendment was passed, she
used her tough mind to fight against poll taxes and literacy tests in order to promote black women
voting (Riggs 127). Given that Bethune achieved success in breaking racial barriers, she had a
tender heart, shown by how she opened a school for African American girls with only $1.50 in order
to teach them "practical skills and self–confidence" (Riggs 127). Also, her tender heart is shown by
her founding of the National Council of Negro Women with the purpose of uniting African
American women, giving them a support system and broader opportunities for success (Riggs 126).
Some would argue that one can be successful without both a tough mind and tender heart, as shown
with Huey Newton, leader of the Black Panther Party and a civil rights activist. Huey Newton and
the Black Panthers used violence to end police brutality and achieve racial equality, showing their
lack of a tender heart. Newton's tough heart is shown by his fatal shooting of a police officer and
injuring another simply out of fear after being stopped by police (Rout). Even though Newton was
somewhat successful in the movement against segregation, Mary McLeod Bethune, was
significantly more successful due to her possession of both a tough mind and tender heart. Her great
achievement is

The Discoveries Of The Lazarus Phenomena
Deaths Kiss Mankind knows more than they ever have in health and modern medicine. Medical
research professionals have left not an inch of the human body unscathed in their hunt for
knowledge and answers. As a result of such thorough investigations, medical researchers understand
and have cured many illnesses, diseases, and disabilities that have plagued mankind for centuries.
Medical advancements have grown to the point where medical professionals are able to bring
someone from the brink of death. How ever far they have progressed with medical research and
testing, there are still many medical marvels and mysteries they have yet to conquer. The Lazarus
Phenomena is a prime example of a medical mystery that could greatly impact modern medicine.
However, what in the world is the Lazarus Phenomena anyway and why is this important? Well, if
there is an occurrence where humans are able to die and come back to life shouldn 't medical
professionals be using this to their advantage? This occurrence has only been documented 38 times
since 1982. However, with some quick research it has claimed to have been occurring for centuries.
The in–depth research and study of the Lazarus Phenomena combined with current technological
advancements should be used to enhance current resuscitation methods and could possibly be used
to bring the deceased back to life. The Lazarus phenomena is, like most things in medicine, a simple
thing labeled with an overly complex phrase coined by a dead man.

how we should take the chances to achieving happiness in it. The book introduces what drives us
about how we feel toward certain objectives. Optimal experience is what gradually leads to flow at
some point of time by staying the flow range. People want to achieve flow no matter how long it

We can be in the company of other people or not but, can make a difference to the quality of
experience we have; "If we learn to make our relations with others more like flow experiences, our
quality of life as a whole is going to be much improved." (pg.164). Culture seems to play a lot in
optimal experience; "One of the major functions of every culture has been to shield its members
from chaos, to reassure them of their importance and ultimate success." (pg.11). If people start to
believe that the progress is going to happen to matter what, then they can quickly lose courage in the
first signs of adversity. It is not hard to observe these symptoms. Religions are seen to be something
as successful for a short while to help cope with the meaning of life. We fear ourselves, we try to
cover it up by with using many objects and ideas, but also with religion. Crimes, diseases, and many
bad acts are increasing in numbers. We all have a future whether it be tomorrow or the next sixty
years of an individual 's life. Though what can we do to improve our future? One answer to that
question is to become independent of social environment to the degree that we no longer use
rewards or punishments. To achieve this a person has to learn to provide the rewards for them self.
There are many points to make throughout this book; that main point would have to be the human
experience of joy and creativity in which the process is called

Analysis Of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar
Literature often illustrates the mundane is such a manner that the imagination of the common reader
is spurred into a world of emotions that previously remained untapped or dormant. To elicit such a
response requires the ability of a powerful writer that often in tandem achieves notoriety that
transcends generations; for example, Sylvia Plath left a significant impression on the world,
especially that of writing, despite her early passing at the age of thirty. It can be seen that the work
of Sylvia Plath is often idolized due to the broad and relatable nature of the subject matter that is
emotional strife; this work, then, is of great value to society and the world of literature as it teaches
those reading that emotion is not something sparse, but wholehearted and running through the veins
of every individual. Plath is most well known for her work that was heavily influenced by her
ongoing mental illness, clinical depression. The vast majority of her poems, if not all, covered the
subject of her emotional struggles she faced throughout her life. This can be seen within her novel
The Bell Jar, which is her most admired and studied publication (as well as required in most
curriculums across the United States). Notably, The Bell Jar was published less than a month before
her suicide in the beginning of 1963. The raw nature of her writing is what drew a wide spectrum of
people in, for all people have emotions, but she was one of the few that dared to publicize thoughts

Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell
Through attention to detail, repeated comparison, shifting tone, and dialogue that gives the
characters an opportunity to voice their feelings, Elizabeth Gaskell creates a divide between the poor
working class and the rich higher class in Mary Barton. Gaskell places emphasis on the differences
that separate both classes by describing the lavish, comfortable, and extravagant life that the wealthy
enjoy and compares it to the impoverished and miserable life that the poor have to survive through.
Though Gaskell displays the inequality that is present between both social classes, she also shows
that there are similarities between them. The tone and diction change halfway through the novel to
highlight the factors that unify the poor and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Earlier in the story, Mary's mother dies and the event leaves her and her father devastated. The scene
of Mary Barton's death is compared with the scene of Harry Carson's death to show that even if it
may appear that the upper class lives without any worries, fears, and feelings of sadness and despair,
they like the poor go through times of trial and hardships. Mr. Barton "went mechanically and sat
down on the first chair" and "sat on, like a stock or a stone, so rigid, so still" (21) As with
Davenport, Gaskell likens Mr. Barton to a mechanical machine and compares him to a rock to place
emphasis on his emotions that have hardened due to grief. Sophy has a similar reaction to Mr.
Barton when she hears of the death of her brother. Gaskell writes that "Sophy went mechanically to
the dining–room door" (206). The mechanical way in which Sophy is described captures her in a
moment where she is devoid of feeling because she is unable to fully process the death of her
brother. The repeated use of the word "mechanical" places emphasis on the quiet stillness present in
both scenes, as well as the absence of life. Mary's "shriller sobs and terrified cries" (22) mirror Mrs.
Carson's "hysterical cries" (209) that inspire sympathy in the reader when earlier in the story the
reader is made to see her as being aloof and indifferent towards the suffering of the poor because
while she happily left the store with a handful of groceries, John Barton could only watch on as his

Comparing Suffering in Plath's Ariel, Stings, Lady...
Portrayal of Suffering in Plath's Ariel, Stings, Lady Lazarus, Wintering, and Fever
103°
Sylvia Plath's poems evoke the worst of subjective fallacies. Probably some of our charged reactions
are symptomatic of the times and the culture; but more of them seem to stem from the always–too–
easy identification between troubled poet and what might be the tone of imagery and rhythm of the
poem considered. Because Plath worked so intensively in archetypal imagery (water, air, fire as
bases for image patterns, for example), many of her poems could be read as either "dark" wasteland
kinds of expressions, or as the reverse, as death–by–water, salvation poems––destruction implied,
but also survived, phoenix–like.
"Ariel," the title ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The stasis is momentary, for immediately after the pause that the word shadows creates comes the
fragmentary picture of the woman being forcibly taken "through air"––"thighs hair / flakes from my
heels." And the statement–like close of that vivid image is the apostrophe to the naked Godiva
(physically, and emotionally, "white," a link to the many images of purity and chastity in these Ariel
poems), who finds her freedom in the physical act of unpeeling––not clothes, in this case, but "Dead
hands, dead stringencies." There is no motion in either of these things; either the sexual links with
the image of hands, or the compulsive duty–oriented links with the image of stringency.
Once free of these deadnesses, the rider/persona can then take off to the ecstasy that awaits her. That
the progression has been a fairly tortuous one is suggested, effectively, by the back–and–forth
emphasis on stasis and then speed; but that the poem ends with the sheer joy of movement can be
read only as affirmation. Metamorphosis, transcendence blots out even those all–important cries
from the children that other poems of Plath's show to be so beloved, as the poem closes (and the line
arrangement here is, of course, mine):
And now I foam to wheat, a glitter of seas,

Analysis Of The Four Gospels Of Jesus
In the Bible, the four Gospels push different ideologies, views, lessons and different stories that
center around the central figure of Jesus. The Gospel of Luke main themes center on Universalism,
social justice, compassion for outcasts, the role of woman and the Holy Spirit.(Hauer and Young)
These parables are able to connect to the context of when Luke was able bring these stories together
in 85 CE. The Gospel was most likely written in Greek speaking area located in the Roman empire.
(Coogan et al.) This time of stability allowed for the proliferation of Christianity and Gospels such
as Luke. The passages that will be discussed will mainly focus on compassion for outcast seen in
Luke 16:19–31 and warning against greed in Luke 12:13–34. Luke 13:6–9 focuses on a fig tree talks
of the opportunities people and if they use them properly. Finally, the last parable is 7:11–17, which
focuses on holy spirit and the possibilities for miracles and the importance of life. These parables in
Luke are able to give a social justice commentary that can make a person feel compassionate for the
poor and the reckoning they would receive in the afterlife if they didn't follow Jesus's teachings. As,
well the story is able to push across a message that will everlasting importance to people. This has
led to the Gospels of Luke becoming one of the main 4 Gospels and one of the most highly regarded
of the Gospels. (Hauer and Young) The first parable centers on the rich man who does not recognize

Personal Development
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Learning is a development that takes places not only for the benefit of the personal life but also for
the professional life. Doing a reflective practice is not a new concept in the world today. Johns and
freshwater (1998) describes that there is a lot of value due to the reflective practice as a means of
learning and that it is the process of studying about the self and triggered by the asking oneself about
their actions and values that they follow during their day to day activities. The learning could take
place either through the conscious level or through the sub conscious level. But then the main
learning would come in only when an individual interacts with the external environment and not just
within the self. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus in short, experiential learning could be said to take place when an individual is said to
undertake new activities or ways of doing things while undertaking some responsibilities. The
learning mainly would take place when an individual is interacting with other individuals within
given environment than learning within themselves.
Figure 1 shows 3 main ways in which the learning process could be made effective:
Focus to plan an appropriate path for the learning process An environment which helps learning
process Techniques which make learning to be proficient

Figure 1: Learning as a process (Buckler, 1996)
During the period of time, a philosophical theory known as experiential learning came into practice
which was based on the notion that person who has experienced the external environment and thus
make sense of the experiences that they face. Various models based on experiential learning have
been put forward during the years including Kolb (1984, Appendix 1), Gibson et al. (1985) and
Aristotle (1946).
According to Buckler (1996), it would be best if learning process is done in 6 different stages
(Figure 2) which he described as: Ignorance wherein it is the first stage which everyone would fall
under Awareness is a stage in which motivation would be needed for the individual to gain sufficient
knowledge of the subject. Understanding which increases with the increase

Saint Luke: Synoptic Gospel Analysis
Introduction 224
The Gospel of Luke is considered to be the one Synoptic Gospel that is the most emphatic about
how Christian disciples are to share their material wealth and possessions to help the poor. Pope
Benedict XVI has described Saint Luke as "the Evangelist of the poor, and his 'preferential option
for the poor' is unmistakable." This paper will look at the type of relationship that Luke suggests that
should exist between the plousios (i.e. the rich or wealthy) and the ptóchos (i.e. the poor). In order to
understand this relationship, this paper will first briefly examine the Old Testament's understanding
of the ănāwîm (i.e. the poor) and their relationship to the wealthier members of the nation of Israel.
Second, this paper will then pithily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the meal Jesus takes the opportunity to talk about a variety issues: about not taking places of
honour at a meal (14:7–11), about the type of guests that a host should invite to a banquet (14:12–
14), and finally the parable about the Great Feast. The story of the Great Banquet is about a wealthy
man who organizes a grand dinner and then invites many guests to it. When the meal was ready, the
master of the household sent out his servant to fetch the invited guests. One by one the guests give
lame excuses as to why they cannot attend the feast. Frustrated by their responses, the host
dispatches his servant and commands him to "'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town
and bring in here the poor and the crippled, the blind and the lame'" (v. 21). The servant did exactly
as his master ordered, but he reports to him that there is still more room for guests. The homeowner
then tells his servant to "'Go out to the highways and hedgerows and make people come in that my
home may be filled. For, I tell you, none of those men who were invited will taste my dinner'" (vv.

`` Lady Lazarus `` By Sylvia Plath
It is difficult to make me uncomfortable. I feel that most individuals of my generation feel that way.
Desensitized because of the information sensory overload that our symbiotic relationship with
technology has created. The individuals, lack sensitivity. My generation as a whole, that's another
story. Somehow, my generation became the most desensitized at the same time it became the easiest
to offend. This is why I love the poem "Lady Lazarus" by Sylvia Plath so much. In the midst of the
20th century Plath touched on topics of depression and suicide in such a shameless way that, it is
capable of evoking emotion most modern forms of expression fail to reach. To do this Plath
masterfully uses imagery that creates a sense of repulsion and dread that only work to add to the
general tone of the poem. Additionally, the idea of a top 40 artist using holocaustic imagery to
pontificate about how sad they were about the on goings at the club feels quite absurd, not to
mention inevitable outrage of social justice warriors for the use of holocaust imagery in the first
place. "Lady Lazarus" made me uncomfortable. It did so, because out of all of media that my
generation has available to us, this poem is one of the most relatable and accurate depictions of a
personal struggle with depression I've encountered. Nearly 60 years ago, Sylvia Plath, fearlessly
used controversial imagery, and masterful metaphor and allusion to illustrate the personal, and
subtle nuance of depression in a way

Still Falls The Rain

  • 1. Still Falls The Rain Symbolism is used throughout literature in order to create a certain mood or emotion in a work of literature. It is the use of an object, person, situation, or word to represent a certain idea. In the poem "Still Falls the Rain" by Edith Sitwell, she uses symbolism to represent the Second World War. "Still Falls the Rain" is a religious poem that shows war as being sinful, and how people should turn to God for help. The entire poem revolves around the rain which symbolize the bombs from the Battle of Britain. The words "dark", "black", and "blind" create a dark, gloomy mood which can be linked to the great sorrow and mourning of lost loved ones throughout the war (lines 2–3). "The Starved Man hung upon the Cross" is used to symbolize al–Messiah, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Jean Watson Research Paper Nursing theories began more than a century ago with Florence Nightingale and began to flourish around the 1800's, when education became the central focus of nursing (Current Nursing, 2012). Although several definitions and variations of theories exist, generally speaking nursing theories guide nurses in their daily practice and serve as evidence based foundations for clinical decisions and outcomes (Petiprin, 2016). Additionally, theories aim to improve quality of care for our patients and enhance nursing as a profession by inviting application of critical thinking and reasoning towards patient care (Current Nursing, 2012). Caring Science, as a theory has been quietly evolving for years (Rosa, Estes, & Watson, 2016). Dr. Jean Watson ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Analysis Of ' And Mary Shelley 's ' Frankenstein ' Intertextuality is a literary technique that weaves together and creates a relationship between two texts, enriching the reader of the primary text with a look into history, and the ability to further interpret what they are reading. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED Online) "intertext" is defined as "A text considered in the light of its relation to other texts;" ("intertext" def. 1), meaning that intertext is when a text is better understood by having knowledge of the text that it alludes to. In Mary Barton, Elizabeth Gaskell uses intertextuality to further demonstrate key concepts present in the text by alluding to works of other famous authors, well known biblical passages, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. By doing this, she effectively shows how the relationship between the working class and the middle to upper class must be compassionate and understanding of their shared connection in order to be successful. The use of allusions in this text is both a formal and thematic technique. Appendix C of the Oxford World's Classics edition of this novel provides two of William Gaskell's lectures on Lancashire dialect, showing the ways in which he and Elizabeth intensely studied the origin of words from this region. Here, he focuses on tracing the history of words, everything from who created it first, where it has been used since then and the ways it is used in Lancashire at the time of the lecture. Ever since I was a kid, people said I lacked empathy, that something was wrong with me ... as I grow older, I come to realize the same myself. Other people place too much value on human lives, even that of the worst scum, so I have taken it upon myself to cleanse the world of this scum. The only thing better than getting to kill the ones that don't deserve to live? Getting payed for it. I was good at it, maybe a little too good. I started to get more famous, more and more people were hiring me, but I was not careful enough. This is where I made my mistake.. A simple job i was told. Silence a well known name, get a hefty reward. A kill I could easily do, before anybody noticed what was going on. There was one problem. Me. Professional integrity, they call it.. Unfortunately my employers didn't think i could keep my mouth shut. They held a celebration for a successful execution. I drank and next thing I know I'm on the way to the land of the forsaken. Ibanez, known as the land of the forsaken is ruled over by Gerard, the highest rank of the order of the divines. They send criminals here to rot and die in exchange for not having the death penalty. What Is The Theme Of The Poem Planned Suicides The poem has a tight, intricate rhyme scheme interlacing all three stanzas: abcd, abcd, abcd, a feet in itself, but the effort shows in the limp line :"Soon they'll be ruffled," which fits the subject but strains for its rhyme , and the weak "a" and "d" rhymes, especially the latter, push the poem, inappropriately, toward humor. The point of view in the poem is an impersonal telling, distanced until the "we" of the last line. Her poem has obvious strengths–a firm opening line with a powerful verb, alliteration and the musical, a slow build– up to the strangeness of the penultimate line, the terror of the close – – and more concealed effects. The juxtaposition of indifferent nature, night, out there, against the apparently ordered hospital, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her last stanza, once again, she deepens the whole situation, gives more universal meaning, by drawing on Christian symbols: Final Considerations Oh, Judas hanging on the tree was close To Christ in time; in pain perhaps also. He had the chance to make his peace, God knows, But only God knows why he had to go Swinging upon the rope. Men suffer so; I am with them now who revive but chose. (201) A third poem, "Personal Easter," again focused on her attempted suicide, is completely interwoven with the Christian significance of Easter. The opening is more dramatic and striking than usual and the whole sustained by a type of lyric anger and despair. Only the last line with its awkward transitive verb form and pulled stress on "Limbo" breaks the strong tone and effectiveness of this poem. Personal Easter Let them bring gifts, let them bring pious eggs. There are no kings at Easter, only men. Two nights ago, we drained cups to the dregs And did not know if we should live again. • 15. Managing Organisational And Individual Change Essay Managing Organisational and Individual Change (Reflection) 20th of January 2008 is to date the biggest life change I have had. It was a Saturday and I was playing an important tennis match when I fainted. I woke up in Kings College Hospital Camberwell South London. I had fainted because my blood sugar levels where too high and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This is not a change I wanted or asked for but had to accept. (Buchannan and Huczynski 1985 pp.14, 15) define learning as "The process of acquiring knowledge through experience which leads to a change in behaviour". Being diagnosed with diabetes involves learning, "Kolb's learning cycle 1984" activist stage describes individuals that want to dive into the swimming pool and see what happens, I guess I was more forced into this learning stage rather than wanting to be in this stage. One psychological theory I can relate to my experience of change is Piaget's theory of cognitive development which involves 4 different stages. (Blake, B. and Pope, T. 2008). Equilibrium, Accommodation, Assimilation and disequilibrium. Individuals are comfortable in a state of equilibrium as they can take information and either assimilate or accommodate into pre– existing schemes Equilibrium (Agnes, 1999, p. 1282). Assimilation is the process of using new information in the environment so it can be placed in pre–existing cognitive structure. • 17. Sylvia Carrh : A Biography Of Sylvia Plath "Why can't I try on different lives, like dresses, to see which one fits me best and is most becoming?" Sylvia Plath once asked in The Journals of Sylvia Plath (Plath 38). Any reader of Sylvia Plath can instantly recognize Plath's dislike for her life and all that comes with it. Plath grew up with the realities of death in the forefront because of her father's passing at a young age and her struggles with at least one mental illness. Much like her characters in her many works, Sylvia Plath struggled from mental illnesses, such as depression and, possibly, anxiety. Sylvia Plath is famously known for committing suicide and the "Sylvia Plath Effect", the term coined by James Kaufman, PhD in 2001. The Sylvia Plath Effect considers the possibility that creative minds, such as writers, poets and artists can be more susceptible to mental illnesses. Though plenty of studies have not found a causal link, popular psychology has come to continue the stereotype that poets are generally depressed or anxious. While Plath is 'famous' in a general sense for this more commonly known information, her literary work published throughout her life and posthumously is arguably more impressive. Because The Bell Jar is semi–autobiographical, we are given insight into the younger years of Sylvia Plath and have general ideas of how she managed her depression. After numerous suicide attempts, Plath eventually succumbed to her depression and killed herself on February 11th, 1963 at thirty years old. She left behind her forty–poem manuscript of Ariel on her desk, as well as an additional nineteen poems, that her husband later published two years after Plath's death. Leaving the poems behind allowed for Plath to control the narrative of her life, as the poems from "Ariel" have a noticeable separation between the speaker of the poems, and Sylvia Plath herself. Plath's desire to try on different lives not only encapsulates the feelings of the writer, but also her characters with her works, The Bell Jar and "Ariel", specifically, "Lady Lazarus. Like her characters, Plath wishes for the ability to have more control over who she is and her experiences because trying on different lives would allow her to eventually choose the life she ... • 19. An Analysis of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock Essay The editors of anthologies containing T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" invariably footnote the reference to Lazarus as John 11:1–44; rarely is the reference footnoted as Luke 16:19– 31. Also, the reference to John the Baptist is invariably footnoted as Matthew 14:3–11; never have I seen the reference footnoted as an allusion to Oscar Wilde's Salome. The sources that one cites can profoundly affect interpretations of the poem. I believe that a correct reading of Eliot's "Prufrock" requires that one cite Wilde, in addition to Matthew, and Luke, in addition to John, as the sources for the John the Baptist and Lazarus being referenced. Furthermore, the citation of these sources can help explain Eliot's allusion to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed, Though I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a platter, I am no prophet––and here's no great matter... (81–83) The reference is not only to Matthew 14:3–11, but also to Oscar Wilde's Salome, the play upon which Richard Strauss based his opera Salome. In the biblical account, no motivation is ascribed to Salome for wanting John the Baptist killed. In the versions by Wilde and Strauss, however, Salome is passionately in love with the imprisoned John the Baptist, who, because he will not let the temptations of the flesh corrupt his pure love of God, rejects her advances. Wilde's Salome, determined that if she cannot have John no one will have John, asks Herod for the Baptist's head on a platter. John the Baptist spurned Salome's affections while he lived; now that he is dead, Salome lavishes her kisses upon the cold lips of the bloody corpse–head. Prufrock, too, has had his moments of temptation: he has "known the arms already, known them all–– / Arms that are braceleted and white and bare / (But in the lamplight, downed with light brown hair!)" (62–64). And these very sources of temptation, these "arms that lie along a table, or wrap about a shawl" (67), eventually emasculate Prufrock by rejection: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Victorian period was the highest point for industrialization in England. With the increase of industry and growth of urban areas there was social and political unrest within these areas primarily, in working class people who had suffered through great mistreatment and unfair distribution of power. Mary Barton is a story that embodies the political philosophy of its author, Elizabeth Gaskell: The effect of urbanization and industrialization within urban and rural areas, the complex relationship between the upper and working classes, in particular the employer and workers, and the social and political unrest that stems from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gaskell also uses not only her own political ideas to formulate her characters and setting, but, she also uses different opposing political ideologies, such as communism, to create greater character dynamics and more complex characterizations such as John Barton and Mr. Carson. John Barton, the father of Mary Barton, is truly the main character in the novel. The primary function of John Barton's character is to serve as Gaskell's advocate for better communication between the social classes. He served as the manifestation of class conflict. Also, he embodies the political philosophy of Gaskell with religious ideology and the communistic ideology of Karl Marx. This duality of political ideologies can be seen in John Barton in him being a "chairman at many a Trades' Union meeting, a friend of delegates, and ambitious of being a delegate himself; a Chartist" (25). The Chartist movement and those involved advocated for the right to vote to be extended to working class men. So, that working class people could have a voice in parliament. They also advocated for the elimination of the secret ballot to eliminate voter intimidation. And the narrator states that "John Barton became a Chartist, a Communist, all that is commonly called wild and visionary" (169). This meant that he wanted more representation for the workers in working environments such as in the factories. Another thing that he wanted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. A Tough Mind And Tender Heart Analysis A Tough Mind and a Tender Heart Martin Luther King Jr., a prominent American minister and civil rights activist, argues that the combination of a tough mind and a tender heart is essential to end segregation and racism (MLK 13–14). For example, King defines a tough mind as one that is able to think sharply and decisively and make realistic judgements (MLK 14). Having a tough mind gives one the ability to discern what is true from what is false on their own without blindly accepting what they are told (MLK 14). Toughmindedness is essential as shown by how Hitler took advantage of people by recognizing their softmindedness and therefore using appeals to their emotions to mold and control them and not logic or reason (MLK 16). Given that a tough ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Bethune showed her tough mind from a young age, walking five miles each day to her local school because she was so passionate about learning things for herself (Riggs 127). Also, in support, Bethune's tough mind is evident as she attempted to break down major racial barriers, encouraging African Americans "to claim their place as full American citizens" (Riggs 127). Lastly, given her efforts to oppose segregation in the Red Cross, she encouraged African Americans to volunteer in World War I (Riggs 127). Similarly, after the Nineteenth Amendment was passed, she used her tough mind to fight against poll taxes and literacy tests in order to promote black women voting (Riggs 127). Given that Bethune achieved success in breaking racial barriers, she had a tender heart, shown by how she opened a school for African American girls with only $1.50 in order to teach them "practical skills and self–confidence" (Riggs 127). Also, her tender heart is shown by her founding of the National Council of Negro Women with the purpose of uniting African American women, giving them a support system and broader opportunities for success (Riggs 126). Some would argue that one can be successful without both a tough mind and tender heart, as shown with Huey Newton, leader of the Black Panther Party and a civil rights activist. Huey Newton and the Black Panthers used violence to end police brutality and achieve racial equality, showing their lack of a tender heart. Newton's tough heart is shown by his fatal shooting of a police officer and injuring another simply out of fear after being stopped by police (Rout). Even though Newton was somewhat successful in the movement against segregation, Mary McLeod Bethune, was significantly more successful due to her possession of both a tough mind and tender heart. Medical research professionals have left not an inch of the human body unscathed in their hunt for knowledge and answers. As a result of such thorough investigations, medical researchers understand and have cured many illnesses, diseases, and disabilities that have plagued mankind for centuries. Medical advancements have grown to the point where medical professionals are able to bring someone from the brink of death. How ever far they have progressed with medical research and testing, there are still many medical marvels and mysteries they have yet to conquer. The Lazarus Phenomena is a prime example of a medical mystery that could greatly impact modern medicine. However, what in the world is the Lazarus Phenomena anyway and why is this important? Well, if there is an occurrence where humans are able to die and come back to life shouldn 't medical professionals be using this to their advantage? This occurrence has only been documented 38 times since 1982. However, with some quick research it has claimed to have been occurring for centuries. The in–depth research and study of the Lazarus Phenomena combined with current technological advancements should be used to enhance current resuscitation methods and could possibly be used to bring the deceased back to life. Culture seems to play a lot in optimal experience; "One of the major functions of every culture has been to shield its members from chaos, to reassure them of their importance and ultimate success." Analysis Of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar Literature often illustrates the mundane is such a manner that the imagination of the common reader is spurred into a world of emotions that previously remained untapped or dormant. To elicit such a response requires the ability of a powerful writer that often in tandem achieves notoriety that transcends generations; for example, Sylvia Plath left a significant impression on the world, especially that of writing, despite her early passing at the age of thirty. It can be seen that the work of Sylvia Plath is often idolized due to the broad and relatable nature of the subject matter that is emotional strife; this work, then, is of great value to society and the world of literature as it teaches those reading that emotion is not something sparse, but wholehearted and running through the veins of every individual. Plath is most well known for her work that was heavily influenced by her ongoing mental illness, clinical depression. The vast majority of her poems, if not all, covered the subject of her emotional struggles she faced throughout her life. This can be seen within her novel The Bell Jar, which is her most admired and studied publication (as well as required in most curriculums across the United States). Notably, The Bell Jar was published less than a month before her suicide in the beginning of 1963. The raw nature of her writing is what drew a wide spectrum of people in, for all people have emotions, but she was one of the few that dared to publicize thoughts that ... Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell Through attention to detail, repeated comparison, shifting tone, and dialogue that gives the characters an opportunity to voice their feelings, Elizabeth Gaskell creates a divide between the poor working class and the rich higher class in Mary Barton. Gaskell places emphasis on the differences that separate both classes by describing the lavish, comfortable, and extravagant life that the wealthy enjoy and compares it to the impoverished and miserable life that the poor have to survive through. Though Gaskell displays the inequality that is present between both social classes, she also shows that there are similarities between them. Earlier in the story, Mary's mother dies and the event leaves her and her father devastated. The scene of Mary Barton's death is compared with the scene of Harry Carson's death to show that even if it may appear that the upper class lives without any worries, fears, and feelings of sadness and despair, they like the poor go through times of trial and hardships. Mr. Barton "went mechanically and sat down on the first chair" and "sat on, like a stock or a stone, so rigid, so still" (21) As with Davenport, Gaskell likens Mr. Barton to a mechanical machine and compares him to a rock to place emphasis on his emotions that have hardened due to grief. Sophy has a similar reaction to Mr. Barton when she hears of the death of her brother. Gaskell writes that "Sophy went mechanically to the dining–room door" (206). The mechanical way in which Sophy is described captures her in a moment where she is devoid of feeling because she is unable to fully process the death of her brother. The repeated use of the word "mechanical" places emphasis on the quiet stillness present in both scenes, as well as the absence of life. Mary's "shriller sobs and terrified cries" (22) mirror Mrs. Carson's "hysterical cries" (209) that inspire sympathy in the reader when earlier in the story the reader is made to see her as being aloof and indifferent towards the suffering of the poor because while she happily left the store with a handful of groceries, John Barton could only watch on as his son died of ... • 33. Comparing Suffering in Plath's Ariel, Stings, Lady... Portrayal of Suffering in Plath's Ariel, Stings, Lady Lazarus, Wintering, and Fever 103° Sylvia Plath's poems evoke the worst of subjective fallacies. Probably some of our charged reactions are symptomatic of the times and the culture; but more of them seem to stem from the always–too– easy identification between troubled poet and what might be the tone of imagery and rhythm of the poem considered. Because Plath worked so intensively in archetypal imagery (water, air, fire as bases for image patterns, for example), many of her poems could be read as either "dark" wasteland kinds of expressions, or as the reverse, as death–by–water, salvation poems––destruction implied, but also survived, phoenix–like. "Ariel," the title ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The stasis is momentary, for immediately after the pause that the word shadows creates comes the fragmentary picture of the woman being forcibly taken "through air"––"thighs hair / flakes from my heels." And the statement–like close of that vivid image is the apostrophe to the naked Godiva (physically, and emotionally, "white," a link to the many images of purity and chastity in these Ariel poems), who finds her freedom in the physical act of unpeeling––not clothes, in this case, but "Dead hands, dead stringencies." There is no motion in either of these things; either the sexual links with the image of hands, or the compulsive duty–oriented links with the image of stringency. Once free of these deadnesses, the rider/persona can then take off to the ecstasy that awaits her. That the progression has been a fairly tortuous one is suggested, effectively, by the back–and–forth emphasis on stasis and then speed; but that the poem ends with the sheer joy of movement can be read only as affirmation. Metamorphosis, transcendence blots out even those all–important cries from the children that other poems of Plath's show to be so beloved, as the poem closes (and the line arrangement here is, of course, mine): And now I foam to wheat, a glitter of seas, (The child's cry melts in the wall) and I am the arrow the dew that flies suicidal, at one with

Jean Watson Research Paper Nursing theories began more than a century ago with Florence Nightingale and began to flourish around the 1800's, when education became the central focus of nursing (Current Nursing, 2012). Doing a reflective practice is not a new concept in the world today. • 44. `` Lady Lazarus `` By Sylvia Plath It is difficult to make me uncomfortable. I feel that most individuals of my generation feel that way. Desensitized because of the information sensory overload that our symbiotic relationship with technology has created. The individuals, lack sensitivity. My generation as a whole, that's another story. Somehow, my generation became the most desensitized at the same time it became the easiest to offend. This is why I love the poem "Lady Lazarus" by Sylvia Plath so much. In the midst of the 20th century Plath touched on topics of depression and suicide in such a shameless way that, it is capable of evoking emotion most modern forms of expression fail to reach. To do this Plath masterfully uses imagery that creates a sense of repulsion and dread that only work to add to the general tone of the poem. Additionally, the idea of a top 40 artist using holocaustic imagery to pontificate about how sad they were about the on goings at the club feels quite absurd, not to mention inevitable outrage of social justice warriors for the use of holocaust imagery in the first place. "Lady Lazarus" made me uncomfortable. It did so, because out of all of media that my generation has available to us, this poem is one of the most relatable and accurate depictions of a personal struggle with depression I've encountered.
