DNA analysis has helped exonerate people wrongly accused of crimes in one third of cases and freed prisoners wrongly accused of rape or murder. It is also used to establish paternity and identify remains after disasters. DNA is composed of four bases - adenine, guanine, thymine and cytosine - and is found packaged into chromosomes in the nucleus of cells, where it provides the instructions to make proteins through DNA sequences.
