The French Revolution lasted 10 years from 1789 to 1799 and saw the people of France remove the monarchy from power and take control of the government. A key moment was when revolutionaries stormed the Bastille prison in 1789. The period was marked by the Reign of Terror led by Robespierre, who wanted to eliminate any opposition to the revolution. During this time, thousands of people were executed by guillotine, including Queen Marie Antoinette and many of Robespierre's political rivals. Napoleon eventually overthrew the revolutionary government in 1799 and established himself as the new leader of France.
