Male with African American
backgrounds
The genre hip hop
originated from those with
African American
backgrounds therefore a
large percentage of
readers for my magazine
will have African
American backgrounds
and will be of a male
gender therefore this is
used to appeal to my
target audience. XXL
magazine is a well-known
magazine with 67% of
their readers being African
American which appears
to be a key factor in hip
hop therefore by using an
African American cover
star this will denote a
great deal of star appeal to
the reader.
Modern Clothing My target group for this
hip hop magazine aims at
those of the age between
18-26 which is a broad
target who are all of a
modern and upcoming
generation. This links with
the fact that hip hop has
broken into the world of
music properly over the
last 25 years therefore is a

modern genre. With a
modern genre and modern
generation this magazine
must be as modern as
possible due to the fact
that it associates these
readers with their own
lifestyle therefore modern
clothing will be required
for my cover stars to wear.
Ray Bans Ray bans are a modern
brand of shades that are
worn by all of those of the
hip hop genre. This is a
prime accessory
associated with my chosen
genre as many people of
my target audience would
own a pair of ray bans.
Beats (headphones) Beats headphones are a
prime example of a hip
hop generation as they
were created and
developed by hip hop star
Dre who is a well-known
and respected artist in the
hip hop community. This
item links to hip hop and
music therefore is well
suited on a hip hop artist
and by promoting it to the
public I am automatically
displaying its significance
to my chosen genre.

Extras
Throughout my magazine I will add many codes and
conventions that have a direct link to my music genre.
Although I have previously stated the introduction of Beats,
Ray Bans, Modern Clothing, LA Lakers Cap, Gold dollar chain
and African American figures I would also feel the need to
feature vocabulary that is relevant to my chosen hip hop
genre e.g. ‘fresh’ ‘dope’ and many more in order to keep my
magazine as relevant as possible to its genre. I will also use
vibrant colours that match the genre and I have chosen black
and yellow as it displays a contrast between a vibrant colour
to a dark colour which suits the genre massively. Vibe
magazine that are a highly successful hip hop magazine also
use this colour scheme.
