1. In what ways does your magazine use,
develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products
By Daniel Robinson
2. Masthead: In both magazines the mastheads are at the top above the image.
My masthead challenges the conventions of this indie magazine as it is
surrounded by colour and is a lot longer than VMAN.
Model: I was influenced by this magazines model pose for mine as it suites
the conventions of the indie genre. The clothing of the model are similar as
as they are both wearing same colours such as black and the white from the
Vman’s models arms makes the black stand out. Both models are young
males which applies to the target audience of students.
Cover Lines: Both magazines have the name of the front covers model with
information on what the story is about. Such as ‘The next big thing’ and ‘Epic
summer’ are to grab your attention.
Colour: In both magazines the colours are bright but on a dark
background of the image, such as the blue on the grey for the VMAN
magazine and the yellow and red on the background of the image
3. Interview: In the interview I want the questions
and answers to be what the audience would
want to know and read about the model. I read
an existing Q&A magazine double page and
related my questions around them and what the
audience said they would want.
Model: Both models are male. The models
are also on the left hand side on each
magazine
Title: for s title I chose the name of the model as
it grabs the attention of the audience and
informs you instantly of his name.
4. Stories: In the stories I wanted to create a interesting
and realistic stories involving real festivals and artists
but with made up scenarios
Design: In my magazine I took influence from this
contents page but added a few images instead of just
having one, also instead of having a review I had a
festivals information which would support my genre of
indie.
Message: In my magazine I thought to have it as
simplistic as possible due to the conservative nature of
indie magazines.
Features: I thought due to the amount of indie
magazines that have their features bar running down
the side it would be a big challenge on the conventions
of a indie magazine not too.
5. Title: My title is to show that it’s a quick pace magazine
which you can read whilst going through your day.
Subheadings: I thought with my masthead being indie2go
that having arrows would relate to to essence of going.
They also relate to the stories on the contents page.
Images: In my images my model is wearing clothes
which we were comfortable that fit with the genre but
also with the climate at the time which was winter so
a jacket was appropriate.
6. Features: In my features I thought that it would
benafit the magazine if they were separated with the
black rectangles which also give it an aesthetic feel.
Images: in the Q magazine they only have 1 main
image but I thought the magazine would benefit from a
few different models due to diversity.
7. Interview: I knew from looking at other
examples of a Q&A interview that the
questions should be in a different style or
colour than the answer. So I chose to use the
red and grey which has flown throughout my
magazine.
Model pose: In both magazine the models
poses are similar they both have arms by their
side and head at a tilt I did this to show him
looking to the future.
8. Clothing: Due to it being winter I wanted the model to have
a jacket on rather than just a tshirt. But this still stays within
the indie genre.
On the VMAN magazine there is a canvas behind the
model whereas mine has a natural background I
wanted to use the natural light with a good
background.
9. Images: in the Q magazine they have used a group
photo for their main image whereas I have used a
few model to illustrate the contents page.
Advert content: In the bottom right hand side on
the Q magazine there is a review box, instead I
made an advert for the leeds festival later this
year.
Title: in the Q magazine it says ‘contents’ which is straight to
the point but I thought as I am aiming at a younger
audience.
10. Background: In the background of the existing
magazine there is no divide so I stayed with
the convention, but whereas the existing
magazine is all one colour mine is a natural
background with contrasting colours.
Name: On my magazine the artists name
is the title of the double page spread but
the existing magazine has a big question.
Design: on the left hand page it is
solely the image of the model which
both have similar poses and facial
expressions.
