The document summarizes the results of a market research questionnaire conducted to understand what people look for in music videos and what music genres they prefer. The questionnaire was completed by 10 people aged 17-30. The results show that the most popular music genres among the target audience are R&B, dance, and pop. Most participants enjoy socializing and listening to music. The majority watch music videos often and prefer if they include both artist performance and narrative elements. The findings will help the creator design their music video to appeal to the target audience.
Music Video Survey Reveals Pop, R&B and Dance Are Most Popular Genres
1. Music Video Questionnaire
For my market research, I designed a questionnaire in order to find out what people look for in a
music video, and what genre of music they prefer to listen to. I asked 4 males and 6 females from
different social groups around Eccles Sixth Form College to fill in my questionnaire. There are 2
people in which were aged 22-30, and the remaining 8 were aged 17-21 years old, which is a more
suited age for the music video that my group and I will create. My findings will help me consider
what to include in our music video, and what aspects are most appealing to an audience. For many
of the questions that I asked on my questionnaire, I allowed my participants to choose more than
one option, such as genres of music they listen to, so I could get accurate results on the most
popular genres of music.

The first question I asked was ‘what genre of music do you prefer to listen to?’, and my results show
that the most dominant genres of music within the age group 17-30 are R&B, dance and pop. My
music video will be based around the pop genre; therefore this is a satisfying result, as this genre is
the most popular amongst our target audience. This chart also shows that metal is the least popular
genre, as it attracts a more niche audience, and is not a mainstream genre of music.

I decided to ask my participants what kind of things they were interested in, or what their hobbies
were, so I could get an idea of the characteristics of the people I was asking, and what appeals to
people. I found that 9 of my 10 participants are interested in music, and listen to it in their spare
time. Also, 8 of my 10 participants enjoy socialising in their spare time. This suggests that my target
audience like to have fun, as socialising and listening to music comes across as upbeat and fun. This
is a contrast to the one person in which said they enjoy doing sports in their spare time.

I then discovered that 8 of my 10 participants watch music videos a lot, compared to 2 who do not.
This shows that even though many members of my target audience do watch music videos often,
there are also some people that don’t, which motivates me to make my groups music video
interesting and as appealing to a wider audience as possible. It also reassures me as I now know that
music videos are popular amongst my target audience, and I believe that if my group and I make out
music video interesting, then it would be as successful as existing music videos.
3. What do you prefer to see most in a music
video?
10%
Performance
50% Narrative
40% Both
After asking my 10 participants what they prefer to see in a music video, I found that the most liked
aspect of a music video is a performance, as half of my participants ticked this box. However,
narrative follows quite closely, as 4 out of 10 ticked this box. This shows that both performance and
narrative are popular, suggesting that if both are included within a music video, it will attract a wider
audience. This is useful, as I can take this into account, and include both performance and narrative
in my music video to anchor a larger audience, as each aspect will appeal to different people.
