The company was now in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and 4 other states as far
down as North Carolina. Not even a year after the 1000th store opening Rite–Aid sales exceeded 1
billion. It was then listed in Forbes magazine as a top 500 company. They then issued a three for two
stock split. (Gale 2018)
During 1984 and 1985 Rite–Aid began to expand beyond its regular business. It purchased chains
like American auto parts, Encore books, book store in Philadelphia, and opened a grocery chain
called Super Rite. They have experimented with the word growth beyond measure. This continued
until 2003 when Grass plead guilty to two criminal counts. Mary F. Sammons was then named
president and CEO. (Gale 2018)
As of 2015 Rite–Aid was known for being the largest drug store chain on the east coast, third
nationally. They have competition throughout the nation, their main competitors are Walgreens and
CVS. Walgreens is the largest drug chain in the United States with more than 8,200 stores

Should I Invest in Jc Penney
Should I Invest in JC Penney Nadia shelchkov Wilmington University Abstract This paper explains
and explores the financial statements of JC Penney and its four top competitors: Kohl 's, TJX, Wal–

on investment, return on equity, price–earnings ratio, inventory turnover, Beta, etc. and then
compares these variables to the other stores. This information gets analyzed from an investors point
of view and also states my opinion on investments and which company I would invest in. Should I

This means that JC Penney turns over their inventory 2.5 times during year. TJX turns over their
inventory 5 times during the year, in fact TJX is the only competitor whose turn over inventory
average is above the industry average. As stated in Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Stephen
A. Ross, the Beta indicates "the amount of systematic risk present in a particular risky asset relative
to that in an average risky asset" (427). The Beta for JC Penney and TJX is above industry average–
that means that these companies would have a greater expected return. Systematic risk or market
risk is the risk that affects a large number of assets. Examples of systematic risk are inflation or
increasing the interest rate, or any uncertainties in the economy but not the company 's performance.
Unsystematic risk is the risk that mainly associated with specific companies or may be some
competitors and suppliers. The systematic risk affects the whole market and cannot be controlled by
investors. Unsystematic risk however affects the company and is controlled by the company 's
performance. When investors invest money into a company they must research all aspects of that
company so they are aware of the unsystematic risks they may encounter. JC Penney is an
unfavorable choice for investors because the company analysis indicates that the company is

(EDER 1998) By keeping their employees training consistent and investing in the newest
technology, Rite Aid is taking steps to maintain a cost leadership strategy.
Another strategic step Rite Aid has taken is implementing the wellness + loyalty program in 2010.
This is a free program for customers that provide incentives to members who enroll based on how
many points they accumulate for prescription purchases. You are able to achieve a Fold, Silver and
Bronze level in this program. Rite Aid stated that those involved in the wellness + have higher
purchases than their non–member customers and they also achieve larger prescription retentions.
Wellness + members can also able to receive more rewards and additional savings for future
shopping trips. Rite Aid continues to add more enhancements to this program making it more
appealing to their customers. They recently added "Load2Card" which is a coupon management
program and Rite Aid is the first drug retailer to implement this program. This allows customers to
"save, manage and redeem Rite Aid and manufacturer coupons available throughout the internet via
their wellness + card" (Rite Aid 2012).
Rite Aid has also formed a strategic alliance with GNC under which they have opened over 2,100

Walgreen's Acquisition of Rite–Aid
One of the biggest acquisition of the year is the mega–merger between Walgreens and Rite–Aid. In
this event, Walgreens acquired Rite–Aid for $17.2 billion split between $9.4 billion in equity ($9 a
share representing a 48% premium of the market price) and the rest in debt. This acquisition will not
only make Walgreens the largest pharmaceutical chain in the country but will also raise issues with
antitrust laws. To further understand this news, we will need to have an overview on Walgreens.
Walgreens is a pharmacy–led health and wellbeing company that started as a drugstore in Chicago
in 1901. The company grew into a multibillion dollar institution over the century through expansion
and acquisition of local drugstore chains and healthcare systems/providers. Some of the widely
recognized brands it acquired include, Duane Reade, Happy Harry's drugstore, and drugstore.com.
The company operates through three segments: Retail Pharmacy USA, Retail Pharmacy
International, and Pharmaceutical Wholesale. The Retail Pharmacy USA segment sells prescription
drugs and an assortment of general merchandise, including non–prescription drugs, beauty products,
photo finishing, seasonal merchandise, greeting cards, and convenience foods through its retail
drugstores and convenient care clinics. It also provides specialty pharmacy services; and manages
in–store clinics under the brand Healthcare Clinic.

Case Brief
Case Name: Rite Aid Corporation v. Ellen R. Levy–Gray, 162 Md. App. 673, 876 A.2d 115, 2005
Md. App. LEXIS 64 (2005)
Facts: On October 25, 2000, the plaintiff, Ellen Levy–Gray visited the head of Infectious Diseases at
Mercy Medical Center, Dr. Ronald Geckler, who diagnosed her with Lyme disease. In response to
this, he then gave her a prescription for doxycycline. Because Ms. Levy–Gray was concurrently
breastfeeding her baby son, Dr. Geckler ordered her to discontinue breastfeeding until the end of her
treatment, but did not provide her with any further instructions on how to take the medication. The
prescription that Ms. Levy–Gray obtained through the defendant, Rite Aid, came packaged with a
patient package insert entitled "Rite Advice." The pamphlet enclosed instructions on how to take the
drugs including its suggestion to consume food or milk with the daily dose if an upset stomach
occurs. The "How to take this medication" section of the pamphlet explicitly stated, "Take with food
or milk if stomach upset occurs unless your doctor directs you otherwise." On October 26, 2000,
Ms. Levy–Gray consumed her first dose of the prescription solely with water. The following day,
she began to consume milk with the drug because she experienced an upset stomach. She continued
to digest large quantities of dairy products including eight to ten glasses of milk daily in order to

Segment Rivalry Strong The current market is divided between a few powerful competitors that can
relatively easily attract customers from one another as the switching costs are low and practical
absence of product differentiation contributes to the easy loss of market share.
Threat of Mobility Weak While the new entrants only need a relatively simple GUI and a supplier in
order to enter the market, the federal and local regulations will require significant investments prior
to any positive cash flow. Again, the differentiation is practically non–existent and the new entrants
will have to compete with financially established enterprises capitalizing on competitive advantage.

The same approach was taken by CVS to the on–line sales offering the consumers user friendly
intuitive format and live customer support 24/7.
Market
The market is highly regulated and is subject to established relationships between health care
providers and PBMs. Currently the pharmaceutical retail market is divided mostly between large
chain stores such as CVS, Walgreen, Rite Aid, etc. The market is rather saturated and the
competition is strong on the part of the comparable size players as well as online retailers and
supermarkets. The industry faces personnel shortages especially in qualified pharmacists and
pharmacy technicians. In the past the industry was strictly regionally dominated with Walgreen
dominating the West, Rite Aid was strong in the South and Southeast, and CVS spread throughout
the Northeast. However, the CVS broke the balance by advancing into the Rite Aid domain in 1997
creating the nation–wide competition between the companies.
The ecommerce forced the major retailers to launch internet based services to compete with the new
entrants such as WebMD.com and Drugstore.com. The price war in the cyber space resulted in
lowering prices at the retail locations as well as shifted paradigm of in–store pharmacy assistance to
the full–blown internet–based services. New short–lived phenomena emerged in a form of
acquisitions of PBMs by the drug manufacturers in order to

Walgreen Company Case Study
Based on the tables above, the company consisting of the shortest cash–to–cash cycle is Walgreen
Company. On the contrary, the longest cycle is contained by Rite Aid. Therefore, there is a leaner
operation in Walgreen compared to both CVS and Rite companies. When compared to the two
companies, Walgreen is less liquid. Due to the reduced period of cash–to–cash cycle, there is more
operating investment in disposal to be used in Walgreen when compared to CVS and Rite. By
considering cash–to–cash cycle, the best performing company is Walgreen, followed by CVS and
finally Rite Aid.
The highest return on assets from the tables above is 23.8%, which belongs to Rite Aid. CVS
follows with 6.25%, and lastly, Walgreen has 5.20%. Therefore, the most rewarding assets belong to
Rite since they achieve a higher return on investment compared to the other two companies. Out of
the three companies, Walgreen has assets with the lowest returns on investment. Basing return on
assets results, Rite Aid has the best performance, followed by CVS and finally Walgreen Company.

quality results. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If CVS were to start operating on a lean philosophy, various processes would become faster, e.g.,
order–to–cash–receipt process. This would, in turn, speed up activities such as invoicing process,
response to overdue bills and the billing errors would be minimized (Oliveira & Fernandes, 2017).
Reduction in cycle time and error rates would avail more cash for paying suppliers as well as
redeployment of the business. Consequently, inventory levels would reduce while the turnover
would increase. A speeder cash collection would also be achieved with shorter cash–to–cash cycle.
Therefore, it would be better for CVS to operate

Jc Penny's New Image Summary
In the article JC Penny's New Image: Why the Re–Branding Will be Successful, the author focuses
on how JC Penny is changing it's way of marketing. Former Apple employee Ron Johnson, became
the CEO of JC Penny, and had many ideas for how to rebrand the company. He changed the way JC
Penny promotes products, simplified the pricing, the presentation of the company, the retail setting,
and the personality of the store. Johnson reduced the number of promotions a year from over 590 to
12. In addition, Johnson created a 3–tier pricing system. In this system, the first tier is the everyday
low price, the second tier is month long sale items, and the third tier is the "best price" discount,
which occurs on every first and third Friday of the month. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Also, the presentation will be minimalistic, using focused and simplified images and accented colors
in photographs to put the emphasis on the products. The retail setting, or the store itself, had a
makeover as well. The layout and organization changed. The services and now at the center and the
products are at the perimeter of a store, as well as the products being put into "shops" with certain
brand names in each "shop". The personality will change, mostly because of the new framed logo.
With all of these changes, the quality will stay the same, if not even better, and there will be an
increase of over 100 new brands into the store. These changes are crucial to JC Penny to keep the
store in business. I have learned that if you do not change your business with the times or fads,
people will lose interest and you will slowly start to lose customers and money, and eventually your
whole business. Also, with the right changes, your business can last for a long time and stay popular.
Examples of this are Facebook, JC Penny, and Apple. This has also taught a great lesson; to not be
afraid of change. Changes can be good and helpful to you as a person, to your job and business, and

Ethical Issues:
While Walgreens is exposed to all the general ethical conundrums of the business world, the highly
regulated "Pharmacies and Drug Stores" industry does not give much room for them to act
unethically.
Recent Events:
Placed within an industry being pressured by reimbursement rates, plagued by market saturation,
and in constant fear of government legislation, Walgreens is trying to pursue new avenues to
promote company growth. In order to promote market share growth in New York, Walgreens
acquired the drugstore chain Duane Reade in 2010 (WAG to Acquire NY Institution Duane Reade,
2010). Walgreens also recently expanded their online presence in May of 2011 with the acquisition
of drugstore.com (Walgreens Co.). While Walgreens also focuses on traditional organic store
growth, these actions exemplify their large focus on promoting company growth through new
avenues.
Along with the positive growth related developments, Walgreens is being faced with large industry
pressures. Walgreens is currently in a public dispute with the PBM company Express Scripts. In a

company grow. The best way to do that is by throwing your company into your community, and that
is exactly what CVS did as a company. CVS has a Project Health Expansion, which originally was
free health screenings at local CVS's in multicultural communities. What started earlier this year,
CVS/Pharmacy expanded on free health screenings in several of their locations in multicultural
communities with uninsured and underinsured patrons. They will have 1,000 more opportunities for
free health screenings. This project health expansion is part of the company's efforts to improve the
access to health and ensure that the cost is not a barrier to preventative services. It is an opportunity
because CVS can not only give free health screenings to the uninsured or underinsured, but can also
get their name out there more for their help with the health of others. This helps the community be
aware of their health situations without the burden of expensive doctor's visits because you don't
have insurance or your insurance is terrible.

Rite Aid Benefits
In middle school, everyone should have a future career in mind. I would love to be a pharmacist
sometime in the future. Allowing me to visit Rite Aid would benefit both parts. If I am given the
opportunity to visit Rite Aid, it would give me experience. Obviously I won't catch on right away,
but visiting could really help me to get a better understanding of the job. It would expose me to what
I am going to have to deal with, so I won't be caught so off guard on my first day. It would be good
experience to let me visit Rite Aid. Visiting Rite Aid will improve the company's reputation in the
community. People will see that they are helping out the youth and respect them for it. Also, if other
kids see this happening, they will want to visit

Rite Aid Pharmacy is aiming to make itself as a cost leadership company in the national drug
retailer industry. The cost leadership strategy focuses on focuses on lower cost and differentiation
than their competitors (Barney & Hesterly, 2012). Businesses using the cost leadership strategy
focuses on making lower prices and can still make a satisfactory profit. The cost leadership can
charge a lower price but can still make about the same amount of profit with its competitors. Rite
Aid has been successful in implementing this strategy. In 2006, Rite Aid introduced their retailer

corner entrance in the store as well as change to the exterior of the store to look warmer and
included a covered drive through pharmacy.
The interior of the pharmacy was to include wider aisles and nicer waiting areas for customers. At
the end of the conference, Sammons reiterated Rite Aid's six goals: "Marketing, merchandising and

Changes are not seen every decade, but ever year or months at times: relevance, speed and costs are
what to focus on. Making health services easier to access and communicate with the retiring Baby
Boomers and new generations will be the most effective way to keep and bring in new opportunities
for growth. Rite Aid's new Wellness + program is to make health care service more personal, then
why not take it a step further from the competition and bring it home, if not by deliver, by
communication. Overhauling corporate and production to meet public expectation of work ethics,

other half of an opportunity to take advantage of. We live in a time where life and comfort

Keep in mind ROE equals ROA multiplied by Leverage (Assets/Equity). This being said CVS's
drastic downward jump can be explained not by its ROA (it stays fairly constant as we saw
previously) but instead by it's leverage. CVS greatly increased the amount of debt used to finance
business operations between the years 2006 and 2007 jumping from around $9,900 to $31,000. Why
CVS made this decision exactly is unknown. Walgreen's total equity climbed at a constant rate by

J.C. Penney's as a corporation has struggled to maintain a consistent brand, identify with their target
audience and change to meet consumer needs.
J.C. Penney's between 2004–2009: The Ullman Era
In the early Millennium, between 2004–2009 CEO Mike Ullman started J.C. Penney on a trend that
would lead to their massive debt and near failure in 2012. Ullman's leadership started strong, "For
three years, Ullman was hailed as the man who was remaking a legendary retail brand. Not rescuing
it. Not saving it. Just remaking it. Making it more nimble. More hip. Not your mom's department
store. Not any more. Now it was the department store of the future. Sephora, Mango and Liz
Claiborne," (Guinto, 2011). Ullman was known for reimaging brands and gave J.C. Penney a
seemingly bright future with strong brand partnerships they are still known for such as Sephora and
Liz Claiborne.
Segmenting into brand boutiques One of Ullman's grandest ideas was to turn the department store
into more of a brand boutique. He brought, "some of the best–known, best–respected, priciest
brands in the world under his direction. At J.C. Penney, he inherited some of the biggest store–
owned or, as they are called, "private label," brands in the business. Arizona. Worthington. St.John's

Penney Company, Inc. needs to constantly be aware of and actively engaged in reducing or

higher prices the most families are not shopping for. Offering coupons will allow them to leave the

Penney has be the subject of many recent articles shedding bad publicity on their business.
Therefore, the company should be especially careful importing goods from foreign countries, which
could be engaged in substandard labor practices or even human rights violations. The company

perspective, they have lost their identity. To explain, JCPenneys in the past was a department store

catering to families. The company sold family products. It was based on the ideal of the family.
During its peak, that was craze, a nuclear family, and JCPenneys catered to that craze. As time

This is a great present to the drugstore industry. There are new drugs to treat previously untreatable
illnesses, and new diseases, e.g. Viagra for men's unhappiness, Zoloft for depression, Avastin for
colon cancer, Herceptin for breast cancer, Nicotine patches for smokers to kick the habit, Tamiflu
for a potential bird flu pandemic, vaccine for swine (H1N1) flu pandemic, Tekturna/Rasilez for
hypertension and various new drugs for AIDS and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). The new
medicines are very expensive, e.g. a year's supply of Avastin costs about $55,000. Eli Lilly has sold
about $4.8 billion of Zyprexa in 2007 for schizophrenia and yet most people have never heard of
this medicine. There are existing drugs now approved to treat new illnesses and thus increase their
sales revenue. For example, Lyrica was originally intended to treat pain caused by nerve damage in
people with diabetes. It is now approved by FDA to treat Fibromyalgia which affects 5.8 million
Americans per WebMD. Big advances in genetics, biology and stem cells research are expected to
produce a new class of drugs to treat diabetes, Parkinson's and various rare genetic disorders. For
example the new drug Ilaris from Novartis targets genetic causes of an inherited disorder that there
are only 7000 known cases worldwide. However, Novartis hopes to gradually broaden its drugs to a

plans that improve profitability, liquidity, financial structure, reordering, leverage, and interest

Swot Analysis Of Penney. Penney
Analysis of the J.C. Penney Case Analysis The first store of J.C. Penney Company was opened in
Kemmerer, Wyoming, on April 14, 1902, by James Cash Penney. In 1913, the company was
incorporated under the new name, JC Penney Company. JC Penney is one of the largest veteran
retail chain in American which has 110–year–old. The highest sales at all–time was $32.5 billion
and the company occupies a large share of market in department stores. Then the market changed,
the shopper has spent less time at the mall and more time at the discount store, like Walmart and
Target. At the beginning, JC Penny did not find this problem, since 2005, the sales had been
decreased, they loosed a lot of money. Then JC Penny hired a new CEO, Ron Johnson, discovered
this problem and did some change. The new CEO had made a new strategic plan, and a major price–
based campaign to revamp JC Penney's image. In the end, the new strategic plan was not working, it
cannot help JC Penney keep the customer. In this case, we should discuss the JC Penny's new
strategic plan, based on price change and change the company's traditional operation. For the first
question, of the major pricing strategies, which one best describes JC Penney's "Fair and Square"
pricing strategy? The revival of the JC Penney is the key to a new "Fair and Square" pricing
strategy. At the first, the company cut about 40 percent across all regular retail prices, and then they
make a three–tiered pricing

JCPenney: America's Retail Destination Essay
J.C. Penney's has the desire to become America's favorite retail destination for apparel, accessories
and home fashion. With approximately 1,108 operating stores throughout the United States and
Puerto Rico, they serve half of America's families every year. They employ nearly 156,000
associates and strive to be number one in customer service. Despite the recent economic downturn,
JCP maintained a steady cash flow and has been able to keep their company running strong. J.C.
Penney's started out with James Cash Penney operating a dry goods store called Golden Rule with
two other partners in Kemmerer, Wyoming in 1902. Around 1907 the other two partners were
bought out by Penney and he was now responsible for operating three stores. At ... Show more

Some of the other ways just coincide with email and regular mailed coupons. Joining Facebook and
Twitter is also a rather current event for JCP among other corporations. This gives them a
connection to a younger generation which should ultimately create a brand loyalty. The main idea
behind developing new processes is to bring in profit.
More recently, JCPenney's has been revamping their look. They started this process by first
changing the logo that they use. It is a slight change to the color set up, but is noticeable to the
consumer. They are also adding brands to the already long list of designers to give more options to
the consumer. MNG by Mango is brand that they started to carry in 2010. Within 2011 they are
going to expand the concept to 215 additional stores and eventually grow the brand to 500 stores by
the fall of 2011. The idea of this brand is to supply the customer with quality, affordable fashions
that have the runway look and feel. Modern Bride is another idea that was launched at the very
beginning of 2011. The brand has been launched to any store that has a jewelry department, which is
about 1,068 stores in all, along with jcp.com. The Modern Bride collection is collaboration with
Condé Nast to create stylish engagement rings and wedding bands. Call it Spring is yet another new
brand that JCP plans to launch in the 2011 year. This brand is an addition to their shoes and
accessories line which is already one

  • 2. Should I Invest in Jc Penney Should I Invest in JC Penney Nadia shelchkov Wilmington University Abstract This paper explains and explores the financial statements of JC Penney and its four top competitors: Kohl 's, TJX, Wal– Mart, and Target. It analyzes their net profit margin compared with industry, return on assets, return on investment, return on equity, price–earnings ratio, inventory turnover, Beta, etc. and then compares these variables to the other stores. This information gets analyzed from an investors point of view and also states my opinion on investments and which company I would invest in. This means that JC Penney turns over their inventory 2.5 times during year. TJX turns over their inventory 5 times during the year, in fact TJX is the only competitor whose turn over inventory average is above the industry average. As stated in Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Stephen A. Ross, the Beta indicates "the amount of systematic risk present in a particular risky asset relative to that in an average risky asset" (427). The Beta for JC Penney and TJX is above industry average– that means that these companies would have a greater expected return. Systematic risk or market risk is the risk that affects a large number of assets. Examples of systematic risk are inflation or increasing the interest rate, or any uncertainties in the economy but not the company 's performance. Unsystematic risk is the risk that mainly associated with specific companies or may be some competitors and suppliers. The systematic risk affects the whole market and cannot be controlled by investors. Unsystematic risk however affects the company and is controlled by the company 's performance. When investors invest money into a company they must research all aspects of that company so they are aware of the unsystematic risks they may encounter. JC Penney is an unfavorable choice for investors because the company analysis indicates that the company is unprofitable. Along with the bad financial analysis and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
