Weaponry <ul><li>Siege engine-this is used to knock down castle walls </li></ul><ul><li>Mangonel- missels were launched from a bowl shaped bucket at the end of one of the giant arms of the mangonel – not as accurate as the catapult or powerful but is very easy to build </li></ul><ul><li>Ballistas-giant crossbows used to attack men </li></ul><ul><li>Siege towers-used as a weapon because it got them to the height of the castle wall – levers and wheels to control the movement of the tower, covered the siege towers with wet animal hide so that they cannot be set on fire </li></ul><ul><li>Arrows- long arrows were set on fire at the tip and were used to throw at enemy tents so that they could set the tents on fire </li></ul>

Weapons cont… <ul><li>Broadsword or scabbard- a protective sheath for swords </li></ul><ul><li>Flail - Typically, the weapon is depicted as one (or more) weights attached to a handle with a hinge or chain </li></ul><ul><li>Dagger and sheath </li></ul><ul><li>Battle ax- could be hurled as a missile, used for close combat, the blade on the ax was about 10 inches long, could injury knights that were fully clothed in armor </li></ul>

Weapons continued…(you thought we were done:)) <ul><li>Caltrops-spike weapons that were strewn across the battlefield (3 inches tall) </li></ul><ul><li>Guns-fling large round stones or shots by using explosive powder </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Explosive Powder-made of saltpeter (stale urine and maneur), charcoal (partially burned wood), and sulfur </li></ul></ul><ul><li>War hammer- used for close combat action. Often they had a spike on them so that they could be used more often. Small handled war hammers were used for close combat and longer ones were used more for get riders off there horses </li></ul><ul><li>Buckle </li></ul>
  8. 8. Weapons cont… <ul><li>Mace- was a bludgeoning weapon, was used for close contact fighting as well as on horseback, The head of the mace was made of either stone, bronze, iron, or steel. If this struck a knight it could injury him as well as destroy our armor . </li></ul><ul><li>The mace was easy and cheap to make. </li></ul>

Castle Formation <ul><li>Circular castle- so that no one can hide behind the walls of the castle and perform a sneak attack </li></ul><ul><li>This also makes it harder to get inside because there are less entrance </li></ul><ul><li>Walls are extremely smooth so that they can’t climb up the walls </li></ul><ul><li>Nothing that they can attach to at the top of the castle </li></ul><ul><li>There is barbed wire type object along the top so that if a rope is thrown over to try to get in the rope will be cut and the person will be unsuccessful </li></ul><ul><li>Staircase is double spiral so that right handed people have the advantage(so we will trade everybody to be mainly right handed but they can still use their left hand) </li></ul>

Jousting <ul><li>Three rounds of jousting, points can be won in all three rounds </li></ul><ul><li>Our knights have high boards in the front and back to hold the knight securely in place as he fights or jousts </li></ul><ul><li>We tar our people’s pants to their saddle’s so that they do not fall of as easily </li></ul><ul><li>We learn to joust on a quantain </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Training for jousting-after hitting a shield a person must dodge a sack on the other end of the machine </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Rules of jousting: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The challenger gets to choose his weapons first </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Swords are four feet long </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Lances are eleven feet long </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Point winning: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>1 point for striking the opponent anywhere (you may not hit any place dangerous, such as the head) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>2 points for striking so hard that your lance breaks </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>3 points if your opponent falls of his horse </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>AUTOMATIC WIN OF ROUND if your opponent falls of his horse </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If your opponent is knocked off, you receive his horse and armor </li></ul></ul>

Forming an Army <ul><li>Recruit people who owe Lord Theutberga service such as a serf first </li></ul><ul><li>We use scutage </li></ul><ul><li>Scutage- the ability to pay the king or queen and they would be rid of their war obligations for the year </li></ul><ul><li>Most people don’t enjoy fighting so the king could hire them using the money from the scutage so that they would work better </li></ul><ul><li>The men that served were willing to serve for the king in return for payment, so they then became the base for the English armies </li></ul>

Organizing the Army <ul><li>Separation into groups </li></ul><ul><li>Cavalry- knights and sergeants with a small amount of horses </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Lances- teams of 2 or 3 armored men(knights, sergeants, squire, pages, and bowmen) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Soldiers on foot </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Usually arch men(they used different types of bows- crossbowmen, short bowmen, and longbow men </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Other weapons on foot were- spearmen, javelin, axmen, and dagger men </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>These soldiers were put in platoons of about 20 men </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Five of these platoons were under the command of a squire (squire is payed more) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>These platoons then form battalions, which were instructed by expierenced knights </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Knights were payed more because they commanded so many troops </li></ul></ul>

Logistics <ul><li>How to kill massive amounts of people </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Horses carry big wagons with all the supplies that are needed </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Groups of 20,000 men and horses would move five to ten miles a day </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>When they went through the area they stripped it of all food and resources </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>When other people came into and area they would starve and sometimes die because of the lack of local food </li></ul></ul>

Castle Building/rest of area(defense) <ul><li>Has a vault big enough to store lots of food </li></ul><ul><li>Has its own water supply so that it can’t be poisoned </li></ul><ul><li>Very deep foundations so that people can’t make tunnels through it </li></ul><ul><li>Thick walls to try to avoid them being destroyed </li></ul><ul><li>Surrounded by a moat with little land between castle and water so that they have trouble getting in </li></ul><ul><li>Use Mortar(burned lime, cement, sand, and water) as a bonding agent between the bricks </li></ul><ul><li>All food was put in castle when the castle is under attack </li></ul><ul><li>Burned all houses, crops, and trees so that there was no where to hide </li></ul><ul><li>Poison all other water supplies </li></ul><ul><li>Board open areas with wood, so that attackers weren’t safe to hide in them </li></ul><ul><ul><li>We could set them on fire or we could send arrows through them </li></ul></ul>

Tactics (defense) <ul><li>Boiled oil and water is poured on people that are trying to attack the castle. </li></ul><ul><li>To hurt the enemies horse (getting past the hore’s armor) we take a knife and stab him on the underside of his stomach – there is no armor there </li></ul><ul><li>We boil sandbags and when we throw them on people, the sand gets into the armor and blisters people’s skin </li></ul><ul><li>If attackers come to the draw bridge, we leave the draw bridge down so that the people can get in </li></ul><ul><li>(Book Demonstration) </li></ul><ul><li>Build wooden walls that stuck out of the castle so that they could stay behind it, and then when people came they got out of the walls and fired arrows at people </li></ul><ul><li>We put wet animal hide’s over the wooden walls so that they cannot catch fire when we are in them </li></ul><ul><li>Once we are finished, we take off the animal hide’s and set the wood walls on fire so that no one else can use them </li></ul><ul><li>We have a constable that helped us to control our defensive tactics </li></ul>

Tactics (defense continued) <ul><li>We have our men positioned on a high rock </li></ul><ul><li>This forces that attacking people to come towards them </li></ul><ul><li>When this happens we fire many arrows at the crowd – the amount of arrows causes more issue than the accuracy does </li></ul><ul><li>This causes the fighters to be injured and disorganized by the time they reach the castle making them easier to take down </li></ul>

Tactics (offense) <ul><li>Once we have destroyed a castle, we take all parts of the castle (stone’s and such) and use it onto ours </li></ul><ul><li>Are horses are trained to kick and trample and twist near foot soldiers </li></ul><ul><li>If the battle has been going on for a long time, we just surround the castle and wait for them to starve </li></ul><ul><li>When bodies were poisoned we threw them over castle walls to make other people sick </li></ul>

  33. 33. Supplies <ul><li>We will have enough armor for all the knight to have armor and we will have at least 100 backup sets of armor. We will also have a backup horse for each knight. For our weapons we will have enough weapons for all of our knights and we will also have the peasants have plenty of arrows. We will have enough food for everybody in our castle to last us at least a year by preserving our food (meat and other things that spoil) with salt. </li></ul>

If… <ul><li>If people try to dig holes under the castle to get in… </li></ul><ul><li>We drill underground and set the people on fire </li></ul><ul><li>We then dig another tunnel that meets up with the people that are trying to get with the castle, and we put a torch down there so everything catches on fire </li></ul>
