The Importance Of Having A Music Program In Schools
In the article Superintendents Speak up for Music Education by Karen Cross, it was all about how
the superintendents in four different districts viewed the music program. The four districts that they
focused on were Fort Bend ISD, Dripping Springs ISD, Klein ISD, and Mesquite ISD. This article
was more in an interview format, every superintended was asked the same question. The four of
them seemed to agree on one thing, that is the importance of having a music program in the schools.
When asked about some of the benefits that students attain from being in a music program, they all
agreed that it helps them develop life skills. The music program can be seen as a relaxing class by
many students. When using the word relaxing, I am not referring ... Show more content on

This article was mainly about how he was able to turn the Pecos High School band from being
considered bad to a band that did great things. Before, Pecos High School band was low in members
and their scores were low. It is stated that they would mainly receive 4s when competing. To those
that are not familiar with the grading scale for UIL or any competition in band, a four would be
considered the lowest score you can obtain. After Mauldin arrived and was in charge of the band, the
band saw a growth in members as well as its scores started to improve. The music program in more
than just music, it builds life skills. Some of the life skills that a student can gain are to be make a

Should Music Programs Be Mandatory Essay
I believe that music programs should be mandatory in high school. I say this for a number of
reasons, not all of them relating to music. Music programs can do so much more for a student than
allow them to learn to read music or play an instrument; music programs teach the student life skills.
Again, music programs should be mandatory in high school. To begin with, music programs are not
normal classes. What other class requires the complete integration of every student? What other
class encourages healthy competition? What other class has a teacher who is required to have such
patience? Music programs allow students to learn skills not taught in other classes. They allow
straight "A" students who have problems connecting with other people to amend that. They allow
failing students to learn the merits of trying harder. Any student who is in a music program has to
think about who takes the hit for an error or lack of motivation on their part. This kind of thinking
applies to the real world more than a good or bad grade does, as not being the best student or person
you can be puts weight on others as well as hindering your success.
Secondly, music stimulates parts of the brain and body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, students who'd rather not do music usually face other problems and don't want the added
stress. This stress can be remedied by learning how to apply structure to time, and this can be taught
by music programs. Second, one might argue that music programs don't have any impact on other
aspects of a student's education. As I've shown, studies conducted on the subject indicate that music
programs universally raise academic ability. Lastly, one might argue that music is a drain on school
funding that would be better spent on other programs. So, I ask, what programs boast the
educational benefits of a music program? When you have that program, you have a valid

The Music And Arts Program
On Monday, April 18, 2016, I observed a School Board Meeting at Chenango Valley School District
at 7:00 PM. The room was congested with a numerous amount of people that varied in age. The
board members that were present were: Mr. David P. Gill, Superintendent, Mrs. Elizabeth Dicosimo,
Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Stuart Elliott, President, Mr. Joel Luchun, Vice–President, Mr. Jason
Aurelio, Mr. Steve Carr, Mr. John P. Hussar, Mrs. Christine Lomonaco, Mrs. Michelle Porterfield
Wilson, Mrs. Kelly Warwick, Mrs. Susan Cirba, District Clerk, and Mrs. Elizabeth Donahue,
Business Executive. The main topics that were discussed were the music and arts program being cut
in half, updated information on the school districts from principals, and the French Exchange
Program. During my observation, I noticed that the board members were not very responsive. At
first, the environment was very uncomfortable and the meeting felt very unorganized. As the
meeting continued and others took over, the meeting became friendlier and more welcoming. When
the public was speaking on behalf of the music program at the school, the board members were not
allowed to respond to what was being addressed. Mr. Elliott opened the floor to the public to
comment and address any concerns or issues. During this time, he read everything off of a script and
had a very rude tone when speaking. Once parents and students expressed their concern of cutting
the music and arts program, Mr. Elliott seemed very annoyed and

Boston's Music Outreach Program Analysis
College is a growth period for students. It provides students with special opportunities and resources
to allow them to reach their personal and academic goals. My goals are to help others and to expand
my knowledge. During college, I plan to take advantage of any outreach opportunities that come my
way. Boston College's Music Outreach Program is an example of what I do to help the community.
Through the Music Outreach Program, I will be able to give students from impecunious schools a
gift–music. This specific program touches me personally because I learned how to play the violin
through music lessons provided by my local school. In addition, Boston College's Prison Arts
Outreach Program has caught my attention. The Prison Arts Program will

Personal Narrative: My Summer Music Education Program
Lasted summer I attended a summer musical education program. The program is during the summer
and you meet new teachers, learn new classical pieces, and make friends who are also musicians. It
was my third year attending this program. I found that each year my skills improve dramatically
after the summer, and each summer I make new friends. Musicians in the program are placed in a
large group based on their level of musical ability and the type of instrument they play, for example
a student who plays a string instrument at a beginner level will be placed with other students who
are at the same level and play a string instrument. Each year at the end of the summer we are in
many performances. Last year when I was in advanced woodwind ensemble, we had performance at
a summer music festival. We had been rehearsing and planning what pieces to play for weeks.
Everyone was anticipating this performance. When I found out I was going to be playing in the
advanced woodwind ensemble this year, a smile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once I arrived to rehearsal, we immediately began practicing the most challenging pieces first. After
practicing for about four hours, eighteen musicians, eighteen stands, eighteen instrument cases, and
a conductor, packed onto the bus. We were on our way to the festival. When we arrived at the
festival, we set up our stuff, practiced the introduction and bows. After going through the songs
again, I felt like I had played these songs my entire life. It was about three o'clock, we went to the
dining hall and had dinner before the performance, since the performance started at seven. After
eating, we my friends and I walked around the campus talking. I entered the dressing room and
changing into my black dress, and black dress shoes. Once again we went through places and
entrances. We all made our way backstage, holding our instruments and music. We entered the stage,

The Effects Of Music Programs On Students
The Knowledge of reading music, and playing an instrument has proven to be beneficial to the
learning curb in students including those of little to no background in a literary education to students
in college. However, there are schools in America where music isn't offered. Having a music
program could create improved grades, memory, concentration, and quicken the learning process of
literacy, but it is believed that music isn't for everybody. Many parents and administrators believe
that music is just a waste of time and doesn 't help a student academically. It has been stated and
shown in media of all sorts that music doesn't help kids academically and is only a distraction with
potentially harmful effects. For example, in John McDaniel's words on the negative effects of music
in school,: "Music programs in school can promote competition and rivalry among peers. In most
music programs, students compete for certain positions and chairs, and they must practice and oust
their peers in order to climb the ranks in the section. This can lead to bad feelings and competitive
values among young children, which can be harmful to their future development."
It is understood why this has been stressed against music in schools. However, it is faulty. Other
beliefs are that it does more harm than good because "it affects grades negatively". In the words of
John McDaniel, "They claim that students will spend too much time on practicing, trips and
performances, which will affect

Should Music Programs Be Allowed?
Music is something that many people can easily get lost in, whether it is listening to it or playing it.
One thing that no one thinks about often is the amount of funding that is actually given to the music
programs, even the ones in Arizona. For some people, music is their world and for others, it is a
source of relaxation. If the music programs in Arizona do not receive an adequate amount of
funding, people will no longer be able to benefit from all the great things that happen within the
program, such as scholarships. The music programs in Arizona deserve more funding than they are
receiving now because the programs help improve academics, they promote motivation throughout
life and they are necessary for many people in the world, even ... Show more content on

Music programs can even help round out an education or some. "93% of Americans consider the arts
to be vital to providing a well– rounded education for children and a critical link to learning and
success" (Flowers, Klatzer and Pacheco). Without the proper amount of funding that a music
program in Arizona needs, people will not be able to achieve the same amount of academic success
as a music program that does receive a proper amount of funding. Another important factor in music
programs is that they promote motivation within people. It is almost as if a sense of accomplishment
is felt when one becomes proficient in what they are doing. People in music programs even get
motivated to gain skills, such as people skills. "The gaining of people skills is necessary to
collaborate with a group" (Catterall). People can be motivated in many different ways, some people
just get motivated within "Links to the fundamental elements of emotional and motivational
regulation help to account for the close ties that music has with the sense of self. An individual's
concept of his or her musical self–summarizes and integrates the various elements of emotional and
motivational regulation into a coherent whole" (Doucette et. al 95). Motivation is something that has
to be felt within, not just on the surface. "Music programs helped give a deeper understanding of
human behavior, motivation, diversity,

Analysis Of Les Prludes S. 97
Les Préludes S.97 by Franz Liszt (October 22, 1811–July 31, 1886) is the third of his thirteen
symphonic poems. The premiere took place at the Weimar Hoftheater on 23 February, 1854 under
the baton of Liszt for a benefit concert. The instrumentation consists in three flutes (third also
piccolo), two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba,
timpani, snare drum, cymbals, bass drum, harp and strings. The year 1847 was the year where Liszt
was moving to Weimar to begin a new stage in his musical life, he took the decision to finish his
career as a pianist and begin to dedicate to the composition, besides, he met the Polish Princess
Carolyne zu Sayn–Wittgenstein, that she impulse his career as a composer. He found the necessity to
evolve the music, and the way that he found was combining music with literature. In this essay I will
discuss how Les Préludes evolve the symphonic genre.
Mark Evans Bonds in "Absolute Music" discusses Liszt´s "Program" music. According with Bonds,
Liszt in his "Harold" essay, he distinguishes between "¬¬specifically musical composer" and the
composer driven by an overarching poetic image or narrative. In program music, the recurrence,
variation, alteration, and modulation of motifs are determined by their relationship to a poetic idea.
Liszt used the new term to identify a repertory of instrumental music which through an evocative
title, a verbal program, or both, "draws the listener´s attention in advance toward a specific object".
Bonds analyses the opinion of Liszt in his program music, how he tried to convince that program
music is the next step in music evolve, the necessity of break form rules to adequate the music into
literature (in the case of Liszt) and the fact that he was reinforcing the first ideas of combining music
with other arts, like Berlioz in his "Symphonie Fantastique". Liszt proclaim himself as a Beethoven
´s successor, he felt that he had the necessity to create something new, as we know, the Weimar
period of Liszt was dedicated to him as a composer, leaving aside the achievements of other
composers like Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. He looked that form and harmony were like a
formula after Beethoven, because

Reflection On Multiculturalism And Music
For part two of this project, I decided to interview a friend that I became very close to and can relate
a lot to since my time starting at the college, Joseph Ahn. I asked him four questions regarding the
environment in which he was raised in, what the music education program was like there, how he
would describe his own identity, and the outside influences that shaped his identity. This is
significant to me because I think it is important to always get new and unique perspectives on your
own ideas. It is imperative that researchers see multiple point of views so that they can create an
accurate representation of what they are studying and what they want to accomplish. By simply
looking at one's own experience is to only see one side of the argument. I want to make sure that I
am not being as biased as possible. I believe that everyone should try to keep an open mind to
everything that they learn and everything that they take a stance on. If you only look at one side of
the argument, then you will never truly learn and grow. I also wanted to ask someone of color just
like me because I feel like people of color bring unique perspectives on key topics especially to one
pertaining to multiculturalism and music. Sometimes I feel as though the music world is
predominantly made up of whites, and there is barely any representation of other races. The first
question I asked him was: Can you describe what your town is like? Joe grew up in Piscataway
Township. He told me that his

Persuasive Speech : Music Programs Should Be Kept Public...
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that music programs should be kept in public schools.
Central Idea: The government should not cut music programs in public schools because they are
beneficial to children, not only to their education, but also helps express themselves.
Introduction
I. Plato, a Greek philosopher once said "I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but
most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning." A. These
words by Plato are what makes music programs important and beneficial to a child's education. B.
However, during these tough economic times, music educators have to face the fight of budget cuts
to keep their music programs in public schools.
II. Without music programs, children will not succeed in school, nor will they be able to express
themselves in society.
III. After doing research for this speech, I hope to persuade each of you to let the government know
that they can't cut music programs in public schools.
(Transition: Let's start by looking at the causes of why music programs get cut in public schools.)

I. School district decision makers make standardized tests their highest priority for students. A.

A Very Brief Biography of Bethoven
{Quote about Beethoven} According to musicologist Berry Cooper, Beethoven was born on
December 16, 1770 in Bonn, Germany, where his father was the Kapellmeister. His father, Johann,
was a respected tenor, violinist, and teacher of both the clavier and the piano. Although Beethoven is
not considered a child prodigy, Beethoven did start music at an early age. Around age three, he
would often sit on his father's lap and play has his father sang, and abandon his playmates to listen
to his father perform. Some historians believe that he started taking formal piano lessons at age five,
a normal age to start training in piano, from his father. Between the mix of Beethoven natural talent
and his father's pedagogical experience, Beethoven excelled quickly as a piano and violin player. It
was said that Beethoven's father was so intent on Beethoven's lessons, that he would often bring
Beethoven to tears. When he was seven, he made his public debut in Cologne, with two other of his
father's students, where he astounded the audience by the difficulty of music that was played.1 By
1779, his father could no longer teach the young composer and searched for other teachers. After
going through many teachers Beethoven found Christian Gottlob Neefe who was the first to allow
him to compose. In 1782, his first recorded work was a set of variations on a march by Ernst
Christoph Dressler. This was then arranged by Neefe and published. This work, even from such an
early age showed many

Program Music Manifestation
Program Music Manifestations.
The great age of program was at the time of the nineteenth century. Program music is the type of
music that aims to evoke an image, or convey an impression of events. Program music is usually
connected with stories, poems, ideas, or scenes. Program music has four types of manifestations:
program symphony, tone/symphonic poem, concert overtures, incidental music.
Program music, in general, has been around, in many forms, for centuries, but it became highly
prominent in the romantic period, when the music was associated with literature. Also, in program
music they aim for the music to express feelings more than descriptions. The first type of the
program music is program symphony. A program symphony is a composition

Music Programs In High Schools Essay
Music plays an important role in a student's academic success. Being a part of a music organization
gives students a place to belong and a place where they can express themselves. It gives students the
drive to do well in school, helps build social skills through teamwork, and improves their focus
level. In every school, there are students who do not like their core subject classes. I have several in
my choir program and the only reason they get out of bed to come to school in the morning is so
they can be in choir. Harris Interactive did a study in 2006 over graduation rates and they found that
high schools with a music program had a graduation rate of 90% or greater. The national average
graduation rate of those high schools that do not have a music program is 73% (Zuckerman 3). I
believe the schools that have music programs have a higher graduation rate because students have a
motivation to pass. As with other extracurricular activities, choir students have to pass their classes
in order to sing or participate. I pay very close attention to my students' grades as they influence
whether or not they can participate in activities such as UIL Concert and Sight Reading. While a
student may not like math, they are willing to work hard to get their grades up so they can
participate in UIL or go on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

helps with students social development as it promotes friendship and requires cooperation amongst

Student Music Outreach Program
I planned, organized, and currently execute a student music outreach program at the Greenspring
Assisted Living Community. At first, volunteering was simply a way for me to fulfill a community
service requirement for school. I was assigned basic tasks such as delivering the mail, or
transporting residents to church, lunch, whatever was asked of me. The time I dedicated was so
enjoyable that I continued to volunteer after my requirements were complete. Gradually, I was given
more jobs and responsibility which allowed me to directly interact with a greater amount of
residents. Eventually, I was cooking snacks, preparing and leading group discussions, and helping
organize weekly church service. These services, as I thought, were more than ... Show more content

I have played the upright double bass since elementary school and have continually invested my
time and focus into music. Music has taught me discipline through practice and has also brought me
tremendous enjoyment. It is a gift I believed that the residents would appreciate so I decided to share
the benefits of live music with my friends at Greenspring. Just playing bass on my own for a couple
hours would have been incredibly difficult and likely not as enjoyable to the audience. Therefore, I
devised a music outreach program to connect the elderly and student music communities. I
presented my plan to the head of administration at Greenspring as well as the heads of local schools'
Guitar, Orchestra, and Band departments. Next, I approached the student music organizations such
as the Tri–M music honor society to solicit students for my program. Students of all backgrounds,
disciplines, and passions then signed up and performed to fulfill their service requirements. While
many initially volunteered for the same reasons as I did, many students became regulars within the
program. Interacting with widely differing communities of musicians and elders bestowed upon me
a crucial component of leadership: adaptability. I welcomed all residents, introduced each student,
and the purpose of my program. To this day my fellow musicians and I perform special music
exhibitions for the residents a few times a year. There is nothing like the ability to play before a live
audience, fulfill student service requirements, and provide a meaningful service for the elderly
community. I am proud to be the Master of Ceremony, to lead this group, and to share our talents

Budget Cuts are Destroying Music Education: Music...
Throughout history music has played an important role in society, whether it was Mozart moving
people with his newest opera or the latest album from the Beatles. Where would society be today
without music? With schools cutting their music programs, the next Mozart may not get his chance
to discover his amazing talent. Music programs are essential to education. To fully understand this
one must understand how music helps the human body, why schools have cut music programs, and
why people should learn music. According to Laurence O'Donnell, "Music is thought to link all of
the emotional, spiritual, and physical elements of the universe." This proves that music is more than
a simple class teaching random notes. It is a common denominator ... Show more content on

Music can affect the body negatively. One of these effects is the fact that music can be addictive
(Severance). According a scholar, if people go to long without their preferred music they can have
headaches. The same scholar later stated that this is caused by disharmonic tones. Disharmonic
tones are found most often in hard rock music and popular pop music (Severance). However, it
seems as though the positives of music out weighs the negatives. In harsh economic times, schools
tend to cut music classes first. The current economic situation has not helped music classes. In an
Arizona school district, the first classes cut were music classes (Rhoden). Rhoden states, "Tuesday
evening, the Humboldt Unified School District Governing Board made the difficult decision to
reduce the elementary music program..." When times get tough it seems to people that music is just
not important enough to keep in the daily schedule. Current society puts a stress on reading and
math. An article from CNN states,
"Shrinking state and local education budgets matched with the added pressure of the No Child Left
Behind Act of 2001, which sets rigid standards in reading and math that schools must achieve in
order to receive federal funding, have created a new challenge for districts" (Van Harken).

the past couple years and span the entire nation" (qtd. in Van

The Importance Of Music Education
The Importance of Music Education Music is a universal passion. Whether you are three years old
or ninety years old, whether you are a democrat or a republican, or whether you are from North
America or Africa, everyone finds joy and comfort in music. Music plays such an immense role in
the day to day lives of people all around the world. So, why is the funding for music programs all
around the country being slashed? The debate over whether music programs in schools benefit or
hinder children's overall academic achievements. Proponents of the funding cuts argue that it simply
costs too much money to sustain these music programs with all the instruments and sheet music they
require, and that they are a distraction from the "more important" academic classes. On the other
hand, opponents argue that providing kids with an education in music improves brain activity which
in turn allows them to actually excel in other subject areas. While it is true that music can be
distracting in some cases, it is extremely important to fund music programs in schools to give
students the best academic opportunities possible. Proponents of funding cuts have very real and
valid concerns for the education of children. People who support fund cuts for music programs often
argue that they are not against music education, but that sometimes it just comes down to either
cutting music classes or math and English classes, and math and English are just simply more
important. In fact, it is very rare

School Music Programs
Playing music has always been a passion of mine. Growing up in the Bellevue School District I was
fortunate enough to have exposure to excellent music programs. I began playing clarinet in fifth
grade, and in middle school I transitioned to saxophone. Having that hour every day to decompress
and focus on music in school was something I always valued. Later, in high school, I took basic and
advanced guitar classes. It was about that time that I truly became a passionate musician. Although I
do not play saxophone very much these days, I play more than enough guitar to make up for it.

Per the Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide, "Music's power lies in the emotional dance
between the cerebral cortex and the limbic system, the seat of human feeling. This interplay is

main ideas behind music therapy. Playing music is also a great way to escape from the stress of
everyday life. According to University of Washington music professor Patricia Shehan Campbell,
"Many adolescents use music as a release from the academic and social pressures of middle and
high school life, as well as from the pressures of family life and parental authority." This release of
stress is very important to the mental health of students. It is shocking how many health problems

Iditarod Pros And Cons
"Wshhhhh.," the wind roars on the snowy Alaskan tundra. The Iditarod tends to spark some
controversy over many things, one being the dogs. The sled dogs, generally Alaskan Huskies or
Malamutes, are trained from birth for the the annual Iditarod race. The Iditarod, an approximately
one–thousand and fifty–mile race, starts in Anchorage, Alaska, where mushers compete to get to
Nome, Alaska with their 16 sled dogs. In this article we'll go over the pros and cons of sled dog
racing and my opinion on the topic. The Iditarod is long, and can sometimes even be dangerous and
cause injuries for the sled dogs. However, that's not to say that they're not strong, as, "sled dogs
endurance often allows them to press on," says Cristen Conger, "in spite of minor injuries." she
continued (Conger, 1). Besides that, it seems that the dogs enjoy it, as sled dogs have "their love of
running" (Arnold, 1) and "will run for miles on their own" (Conger, 1). The sled dogs are bred for
the harsh environment and can even survive in negative temperatures, which are very common
along the Alaskan trail. Although there are quite a few pros, let's look at the other side of the
argument, the cons. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Pros And Cons Of Creating The Budget
I was assigned to cut the budget for year 1 and year 2 by $750,000 (total of $1.5 million over 2
years) by the CEO. I took a comprehensive look at the budget and my recommendations are that we
should cut the number of participants from 1000 to 910 and let go of 3 staff members. These
reductions would have a cascading effect and help us to cut the budgets of both years by 750,000
dollars.
I believe that the quality of our program is more important than the number of participants we serve.
Consequently, I propose to
decrease the number of participants by 9% (90 participants) for year 1 and year 2. This cut would
cause minimum harm to the program because we would be able to serve the other 910 participants
without decreasing services, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Subsequently, helping us reach our desired program outcomes. The average cost of a certification is
$75 and for our initial budget, we assumed that half of the participants would get these
certifications. In our new budget, this ratio would be maintained, however as we have fewer
participants, we would only need to budget for 455 certifications decreasing our budget by $3,375
for year 1 and year 2.
Another important service that our program offers is background checks. These checks help increase
the number of placements and retentions. Our initial budget reflected that each background check
costs $50 and approximately half of the participants would require a background check. The new
budget for year 1 and year 2 would still maintain the same ratio but due to a decrease in participants,
we would only need to budget for 455 participants. This would help us cut the budget by $2,250 for
year 1 and year 2 without harming the program.
Career advisors are an essential part of our program. Career advisors–transitional help participants
during their transitional employment, which is usually for the first 4–6 months of the program. My
recommendation would be to fire 2 of these advisors as this would allow us to decrease our budget
by $80,000 for year 1 and 2. Currently, these advisors serve 500 participants and their maximum
participants to staff ratio is 35:1. Our initial budget

Program Music: Richard Strauss's "Don Quixote"
Before the Romantic musical age, composers wrote music for the purpose of arranging sounds into
the most beautiful way possible. Because of these goals, they followed some very specific ideas and
wouldn't stray from them. Once the Romantic era hit, composers wanted to express a variety of
things in their music. This is when the idea of program music appeared. Program music is usually
instrumental music without spoken or sung words to explain the story or event that the composer has
chosen to describe with his or her music. However, program music relies on a few non–musical
things to make sure that the listener is interpreting the correct story. These things are often the title
of the piece, a written forward and many times notes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

band of wandering pilgrims. Unfortunately, Don believes they are a great force of villains, so he

revive from this attack. When he finally revives, a relieved Sancho falls asleep next to him. The
band of pilgrims is portrayed by almost stately processional music, but once again Don's defeat is
depicted by a sudden single loud note in the bass voices. After this, his and Sancho's sleep is shown
by a peaceful recitations of there themes. In the next section, Don stays awake keeping a vigil over
his arms and dreams about his ideal woman Dulcinea. This section mainly is comprised of a mixture
of Don and Dulcinea's themes. After this dream, a peasant girl happens upon the hero and Sancho
convinces Don that this girl is really Dulcinea, but she has been put under a spell by a wizard. This
is portrayed by a simple, happy variation of Dulcinea's theme. At this point, a duke and a duchess

Scholarship Application for a Music Program Essay
Music is one of the most fascinating aspects of a civilization, and yet it's importance is often
overlooked by many in today's world. The existence of music dates well beyond any known
civilization, and its gradual evolution drastically varies from culture to culture. To me, the notion
that music is a mere reflection of society is a statement I used to take for granted. Although this
notion is true to some degree, mainly with some popular music, my research has led me to conclude
that all music influences society on a greater scale than one would assume. In ancient times, there
existed many correlations between changes in music followed by changes in society. These range
from the ushering of new eras of prosperity, to the conservation of ... Show more content on

Having found a new direction in my life, I left everything in the hectic New York City behind. I
moved on my own to a rural area in Washington State in an effort to live a more peaceful and self–
sufficient life, and pursue new experiences. Once I moved, my taste in music gradually became
more refined. I began to seriously practice the classical guitar and composed for it as well. Since
then, I also started experimenting with binaural beats and have used them extensively in meditation
and other disciplines. This led me to research the effects of particular frequencies exerted on the
brain, and how they could easily be used to induce different brainwave frequency states. I
discovered how playing music helps to create a lot of new neural networks, increase the bridge
between the two brain hemispheres (corpus callosum) and develop higher levels of perception. But
the rabbit hole was deeper than I thought.
I read books on the influence of music on society throughout the ages. Each specific type of music
has produced an effect on history, morals and culture. I found examples of drastic changes in music
that led to drastic changes in civilization. Different styles of music within a society led to different
coexisting ideals. Sometimes new popular music led to a social revolution. In places like ancient
China, where music varied very little, traditions were maintained for thousands of years. The
Chinese themselves believed it was because of the preservation of

The Importance of Funding Music and Art Programs for Young...
Much too often in America today, modern music and art programs in schools are perceived to many
as extracurricular activities rather than important subjects that are vital to a students learning and
skill development. The truth of the matter is that encouraging music and art education in public
schools has a much larger impact on student's grades, academic performance, and the economy than
the majority people realize. Within the next year city school budgets will be dropping by twenty five
percent, and despite the fact that music and art programs have been showing a dramatic contribution
to student's learning, this substantial drop in funding for the programs will lead to no dedicated
money for art or music programs (Mezzacappa). There is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

"Students who study art are 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and 3
times more likely to be awarded for school attendance" ("11 Facts about Arts in Education"). Music
and art are clearly not two subjects that schools today can afford to cut off funding for based on this
evidence. Music and art programs are responsible for increasing school attendance, which can lead
to being one of the most important things in a student's academic success in school. Students have to
attend school and be present in order to attain the information from their classes and teachers if they
wish to succeed. Better attendance means more students are in class, which means more students are
getting the information they need to excel from their teachers, which ultimately means better grades
and test scores for schools. As of today, arts are defined as core subjects in only twenty–six states in
America (Mandel). If only twenty–six states are treating art education as a core subject, that means
that twenty–four states are currently neglecting art programs and not considering them important to
their student's education. If more states are educated on the importance of art programs for young
students, and the arts are defined as core subjects nationally, then there will be a

Music Programs Should be Kept in Schools Essay
All school districts should retain music programs in their schools. Probably the most well–known
supposed benefit of involvement in a music program is the Mozart Effect. The Mozart Effect claims
that "performance on tasks of spatiotemporal reasoning may be improved for ten–fifteen minutes
immediately after listening to part of a Mozart piano sonata or similarly complex music" (Črnčec,
Wilson, and Prior, 580). While the Mozart Effect has little to back it, there are still many reasons
music and other fine arts belong in schools.
Spatiotemporal reasoning is related to activities involving space and time such as memory, mental
rotation and visualization. However, studies have proven that benefits are inconclusive. Many
studies such as one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One such theory involves private music instruction (Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 582). One on one
private lessons can promote the life–long need to learn. Music training started at an early age can
improve the brain's ability to process different tones and patterns. This can benefit a person later in
life when he or she is trying to focus in a room full of background noise.
Ear–training, "the ability to discern subtleties in pitch and timing," ("Hearing the Music" par. 4)
increases aptitude in children and adults when trying to learn a new language. Musicians are better
able to pick out these changing subtleties in speech and tones than non–musicians. This skill, when
applied to the learning disabled, improves speech comprehension ("Hearing the Music" par. 4).
A 2003 study indicates that two years of music lessons can improve performance on arithmetic tests
(Rauscher and LeMieux qtd. in Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 583). In fact, music lessons can boost IQ
levels simply because they provide a learning opportunity. The most widely cited neuro–scientific
theory is one done by Leng and Shaw in 1991 which states:
Music resonates with inherent neuronal firing patterns throughout the brain; thus, music listening
and music instruction can prime the brain for improved performance on spatiotemporal and other
cognitive tasks. (qtd. in Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 585)
These other cognitive tasks include not only arithmetic, but reading, verbal

I started playing flute when my elementary school would allow both fourth and fifth graders to

A Rough Patch for School Music Programs Essay
It came to my attention that there was clearly a problem when all that the band directors addressed at
band concerts, from the local school concert to the district performance, was that the music
programs were currently going through a rough patch. Budget cuts, an increased focus on "test"
subjects, and loss in popularity of music activities have caused the quantity and quality of high
school musicians to decline. With all of the impressive benefits of being a musician, it is crazy that
student instrumentalists are an endangered species.
Especially in this time of recovery from the recession, budget cuts have forced music programs to
decrease exponentially, or shut down altogether. There are countless cases from all different types of

Research findings show that 21% of seniors in the class of 2004 have participated in school music
ensembles, a decline of about 10% from 1982. Teenagers today enjoy listening to rap and pop songs
rather than compositions by old men Tchaikovsky or Beethoven. Even if high school bands do not
play classical music, there is a distinct difference between current music and band music. Also,
teenagers today are exceedingly preoccupied with their studies, extracurricular activities, and jobs.
Therefore, one usually has to decide which activity to focus on more or completely – sports or
music, both activities that are equally time consuming. High school athlete participation has
increased for the 24th consecutive year so far. Sadly, music does not prevail; there are not nearly as
many student participants in high school music programs. The population of high school musicians
in the US is shrinking. This is due to both schools putting music programs on the chopping block to
save money and focus on core subjects, and students who today seem to have lost more interest in
musical activities. Now more than ever, kids are less exposed to music activities in school, thus
there is a smaller chance of one becoming involved in the music program. Even so, purchasing new
instruments for the student and school is now difficult. Furthermore, the reduction of music
educators leads to an overall poorer teaching of musicality. School music

Review of The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink in 2009
The Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 was composed by Beethoven and was completed in
1808. It is also referred to as "Pastoral Symphony." In 2009, Bernard Haitink conducted the
performance of the symphony by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
From Haitink's concert on Beethoven's sixth symphony, I was expecting to see the original work of

composer's radical ideas as well as highlighting his classical influences. Its programmatic nature is
the main romantic feature though the dramatic dynamic changes, as well as the use of percussion

Programmatic symphonies occurred primarily in the late– Romantic and Classical period. The
repetition of the different subjects is a feature is a programmatic symphony and, therefore, a
romantic trait. For example, the 'bird calls' produced by the strings in bar
151 are programmatic.
Haitink's traversal of the 'Pastoral' is a fine achievement, established on tempi that strike the
viewers. On the first movement, he takes it at a flowing, warm tempo. The Orchestra plays radiantly
for him. The played symphony has a nice, firm bass line, revealingly enriched at intervals by the
horns, and its attention to dynamics is meticulous throughout the whole symphony. The first
movement ends in such a way that, the symphony can be heard as a wonderfully civilized and wise
account of the performance.
The second movement is designed beautifully. Once again the tempo is skillfully chosen.
The woodwinds and the strings afford Haitink some fine playing and there are several lovely
woodwind solos for the audience to enjoy. The third movement is lithe and light – this is a joyful
and well–sprung dance. The subsequent storm is exciting, featuring some thrilling strikes on the
timpani.
The finale brings an excellent summary of the performance. In Haitink's experienced hands, the
symphony is serene, displaying an inner radiance and warmth. The style is demonstrative and
completely natural. The pacing is perfect and the playing is glowing.

Music Programs Should Not Be Allowed In Schools?
The argument of whether music should or should not be allowed in school has been debated by
educators, parents, and students for a long time. These programs provide the students opportunities
to play instruments and sing during the school day. Music programs are usually the first thing to go
when schools have to do a budget cut. Some people believe that there are too many negatives
aspects of music programs, while others believe it is a great addition to schools. So people need to
decide whether or not music programs saved or not allowed at all.
In your article, you state four reasons why music programs should not be allowed in schools. The
article states that music programs are a big budget concern for schools. There are many costs that go
into music programs which include paying for required instruments, space for practices, concerts,
extra music faculty and instructors. The school is not the only place affected by these costs, parents
have to spend a great deal of money too. The parents of the students need to pay for their child's
instruments, or lessons. Another point brought up in the article is that it distracts students from their
academics. Music programs will take the students attention away from more important subjects like
math and English. Having these programs will not allow students to put enough time into their
homework and studying for tests, due to the amount of time it takes up. The students involved in
these programs will also need to practice, attend

Music Programs In Schools
Music programs are not in all schools. (What percentages of schools have music programs?) Music
can help students in so many aspects of life, but schools aren't investing in the music program. (How
much on average is a music program cost?) All high schools need to have elective music programs
in order to see benefit their grade averages, to create career preparation, to build teamwork skills,
and to boost student participation in school. Schools are so focused on grade improvement and
getting better scores on state mandated tests each year that they are not taking the time to think
about the benefit that music programs could achieve in this aspect. It has been proven that music
students score higher on standardized tests than non–music students. (What percentage?) (Where

Of course the beginning first few years of my life did not consistent of heavy articulation and
rhythm interpretation, rather it was to see if I could sing back the ABC's or mumble the Arthur
theme song to my sister.
Most of the music influence I have was harvested back when I was eleven. I listened to a wide
variety of genres of music from pop, to rock, to rap, to country, to concert band music, even to
Bollywood music as that's what would be playing in my home as my mom cooked food for all of us.
The audio quality of the music always interested me. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I learned the correlation between blowing into an instrument and the sounds that come out.
This really changed my perception about music. I found myself enjoying the classical music that I
would be playing on my clarinet, but I always kept it in correlation with the new sounds and
technology music was sounding like. The new electronic based sounds created on the computer with
the melodies and movement like a classical piece set that a part for me. I think this was generated by
sounds from Kanye West and his albums such as Graduation, and 808s & Heartbreaks, even the
blending of genres from Coldplay between pop tunes and classical music using implications such as
organs, bells, and synthesizers in doing so.
So what I ended up learning and continue to learn is I that like music really no matter what
condition it comes in. The examination of the work that takes place behind it demonstrates more
than what someone on the internet can tell me about how bad an album is or how weak the lyrics
are. Of course there's some analysis if a song is deemed as good or bad, but I always respect the
work that is done in order to produce music.

Music Programs Throughout The United States
Music programs throughout the United States are making quite the hurrah, and yet seem to never be
heard by the classmates and staff that walk the same halls as them. The lack of appreciation of the
music and arts programs throughout America is astonishing, and heartbreaking to many of the
students, parents, and staff that are involved with them. There are more than a few causes that can be
held responsible, however the main three are a lack of funding, lack of support from administration
and staff, and the lack of equal support amongst students involved in different activities, such as
sports, clubs, and music programs, all of which have led to a decrease in student participation in
music. However, there may be a solution in sight, with the help of some creative thinking on the part
of the administration, the support of the staff members, and the acknowledgment of the student
body.
There are many benefits to music. It's a way for students to express themselves, create bonds, learn
life skills, and improve their minds. Studies have shown that music can benefit a student
academically, as well as mentally. Not only that, but if introduced in earlier childhood, music can
actually help a child with their linguistic development. As stated by Laura Lewis Brown in her
article The Benefits of Music Education, "While children come into the world ready to decode
sounds and words, music education helps enhance those natural abilities." (1). I have been in band

program did not improve the children's skill of teamwork and self–discipline it shows educators and
parents their child's view in their eyes. Sarazin interviewed students such as Michael, "So, my

Whether the children who are involved in the music program grow up to become a parent or
continue their interest and turn it into a career. Seeing how music affects children, positively and
negatively, allows adults to see the best solution for lacking music programs. Although you must
ask, Is the lack of music programs a good thing? Avoiding the negative experience, such as the
children's experience in London, in paragraph 4, allows educators to understand the view that maybe
the music program is the issue, as well as our own teaching methods or skill levels. Having music
programs obviously expands a child's abilities in other cases, such as the children in juvenile
centers, but what is the solution? Should music programs be important, or do they not matter? As
most parents agree a child's interests are important, as well as being able to explore and find
themselves. Music programs allow students to explore a new side, that not only fulfills their interest,
but develops social skills. As parents raise their children supporting their interests and future,
educators in music help push along the skills each child is developing. Whether the government
provides "arts–rich" music programs in a school determines how much these children can explore

Today, many schools focus on preparing their students for their lives beyond the classrooms. They
do so by focusing their limited resources on programs that they deem necessary for a proper

history, science, reading, etc. Music requires self–discipline, accountability, and teamwork: traits
that most employers seek in young applicants. Students should participate in music programs
because they foster cognitive development, inspire teamwork, and encourage students to adapt a

Disney 's The Pastoral Symphony
Disney 's Fantasia (1940) lies in a class separate from all other animations of program music. While
its initial reception was less than stellar, it has since become a standard film in home collections.
Theatrical performances, games, and many other derivatives of the brand now exist. Despite this, it
has also generated a fair amount of controversy. For example, it contains scenes that allude to
Darwin's theory of evolution, and others that display negative racial stereotypes. Yet the most
controversial scene at the movie's premiere was the animation of Beethoven 's Sixth, the Pastoral
Symphony. This feature upset many classical music lovers who objected to the idea of giving
Beethoven's symphony an explicit storyline and a set of images that he did not have in mind. The
Pastoral Symphony is likely the most familiar example of program music, but most musicians and
critics seem to agree that this does not give a free pass to any form of interpretation. In the intro to
Fantasia, the narrator addresses this by cautioning the listener that the video clips were created based
on the musical interpretations of animators, not of trained musicians. From that cautionary message
to articles published as recently as this year, Fantasia remains a topic of controversy, influenced by
factors such as audience familiarity and general views on Beethoven himself. The reach of this
influence is not limited to reviews of the Pastoral Symphony feature, but rather extends to the whole

Personal Narrative: A Career In Music School
I once had a teacher who told me, "There are no wrong notes, but how you play them, the feelings
you put in and how you play them in time. It's all about your timing." This is one piece of advice
that has always remained with me, and looking back over the past year, I can see that it adheres to
far more than just music.
A year ago, I thought that as long as I could play a solo like Stevie Ray Vaughn, I would be accepted
into any college music program I applied to. However, I was very naïve when it came to the college
application process, and did not know just what it took to get into the music programs I was looking
at. Throughout high school, I really enjoyed playing the blues on my guitar. It was a skill that I
believed would aid me greatly when it came time to audition. But, as I would find out quite harshly,
I could not sight read nor did I adequately understand basic music theory. It was initially a huge
disappointment to be denied from all the programs I applied to, though now looking back, the timing
just wasn't right for me. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The moment I was handed my diploma, I felt as if I had been abruptly dropped into the real world,
knowing I now needed to use my time much more wisely. I quickly set new goals for myself, and
the very next day after graduation, I started lessons with a new jazz guitar teacher. I began taking
classes at my local community college, persevering towards a second chance at applying to the great
music programs I once sought out. I also enrolled there so I could use my time to work towards a
degree by covering my general education studies. It is my dream to pursue an undergraduate degree
in jazz studies, however, this wonderful opportunity is sadly unavailable to me in community

The Importance Of Having A Music Program In Schools

  • 1. The Importance Of Having A Music Program In Schools In the article Superintendents Speak up for Music Education by Karen Cross, it was all about how the superintendents in four different districts viewed the music program. The four districts that they focused on were Fort Bend ISD, Dripping Springs ISD, Klein ISD, and Mesquite ISD. This article was more in an interview format, every superintended was asked the same question. The four of them seemed to agree on one thing, that is the importance of having a music program in the schools. When asked about some of the benefits that students attain from being in a music program, they all agreed that it helps them develop life skills. The music program can be seen as a relaxing class by many students. When using the word relaxing, I am not referring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This article was mainly about how he was able to turn the Pecos High School band from being considered bad to a band that did great things. Before, Pecos High School band was low in members and their scores were low. It is stated that they would mainly receive 4s when competing. To those that are not familiar with the grading scale for UIL or any competition in band, a four would be considered the lowest score you can obtain. After Mauldin arrived and was in charge of the band, the band saw a growth in members as well as its scores started to improve. The music program in more than just music, it builds life skills. Some of the life skills that a student can gain are to be make a choice, making a commitment, and to be aware of the consequences of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Should Music Programs Be Mandatory Essay I believe that music programs should be mandatory in high school. I say this for a number of reasons, not all of them relating to music. Music programs can do so much more for a student than allow them to learn to read music or play an instrument; music programs teach the student life skills. Again, music programs should be mandatory in high school. To begin with, music programs are not normal classes. What other class requires the complete integration of every student? What other class encourages healthy competition? What other class has a teacher who is required to have such patience? Music programs allow students to learn skills not taught in other classes. They allow straight "A" students who have problems connecting with other people to amend that. They allow failing students to learn the merits of trying harder. Any student who is in a music program has to think about who takes the hit for an error or lack of motivation on their part. This kind of thinking applies to the real world more than a good or bad grade does, as not being the best student or person you can be puts weight on others as well as hindering your success. Secondly, music stimulates parts of the brain and body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, students who'd rather not do music usually face other problems and don't want the added stress. This stress can be remedied by learning how to apply structure to time, and this can be taught by music programs. Second, one might argue that music programs don't have any impact on other aspects of a student's education. As I've shown, studies conducted on the subject indicate that music programs universally raise academic ability. Lastly, one might argue that music is a drain on school funding that would be better spent on other programs. So, I ask, what programs boast the educational benefits of a music program? When you have that program, you have a valid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Music And Arts Program On Monday, April 18, 2016, I observed a School Board Meeting at Chenango Valley School District at 7:00 PM. The room was congested with a numerous amount of people that varied in age. The board members that were present were: Mr. David P. Gill, Superintendent, Mrs. Elizabeth Dicosimo, Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Stuart Elliott, President, Mr. Joel Luchun, Vice–President, Mr. Jason Aurelio, Mr. Steve Carr, Mr. John P. Hussar, Mrs. Christine Lomonaco, Mrs. Michelle Porterfield Wilson, Mrs. Kelly Warwick, Mrs. Susan Cirba, District Clerk, and Mrs. Elizabeth Donahue, Business Executive. The main topics that were discussed were the music and arts program being cut in half, updated information on the school districts from principals, and the French Exchange Program. During my observation, I noticed that the board members were not very responsive. At first, the environment was very uncomfortable and the meeting felt very unorganized. As the meeting continued and others took over, the meeting became friendlier and more welcoming. When the public was speaking on behalf of the music program at the school, the board members were not allowed to respond to what was being addressed. Mr. Elliott opened the floor to the public to comment and address any concerns or issues. During this time, he read everything off of a script and had a very rude tone when speaking. Once parents and students expressed their concern of cutting the music and arts program, Mr. Elliott seemed very annoyed and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It provides students with special opportunities and resources to allow them to reach their personal and academic goals. My goals are to help others and to expand my knowledge. During college, I plan to take advantage of any outreach opportunities that come my way. Boston College's Music Outreach Program is an example of what I do to help the community. Through the Music Outreach Program, I will be able to give students from impecunious schools a gift–music. This specific program touches me personally because I learned how to play the violin through music lessons provided by my local school. In addition, Boston College's Prison Arts Outreach Program has caught my attention. • 9. Personal Narrative: My Summer Music Education Program Lasted summer I attended a summer musical education program. The program is during the summer and you meet new teachers, learn new classical pieces, and make friends who are also musicians. It was my third year attending this program. I found that each year my skills improve dramatically after the summer, and each summer I make new friends. Musicians in the program are placed in a large group based on their level of musical ability and the type of instrument they play, for example a student who plays a string instrument at a beginner level will be placed with other students who are at the same level and play a string instrument. Each year at the end of the summer we are in many performances. Last year when I was in advanced woodwind ensemble, we had performance at a summer music festival. We had been rehearsing and planning what pieces to play for weeks. Everyone was anticipating this performance. When I found out I was going to be playing in the advanced woodwind ensemble this year, a smile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we arrived at the festival, we set up our stuff, practiced the introduction and bows. After going through the songs again, I felt like I had played these songs my entire life. It was about three o'clock, we went to the dining hall and had dinner before the performance, since the performance started at seven. After eating, we my friends and I walked around the campus talking. I entered the dressing room and changing into my black dress, and black dress shoes. • 11. The Effects Of Music Programs On Students The Knowledge of reading music, and playing an instrument has proven to be beneficial to the learning curb in students including those of little to no background in a literary education to students in college. However, there are schools in America where music isn't offered. Having a music program could create improved grades, memory, concentration, and quicken the learning process of literacy, but it is believed that music isn't for everybody. Many parents and administrators believe that music is just a waste of time and doesn 't help a student academically. It has been stated and shown in media of all sorts that music doesn't help kids academically and is only a distraction with potentially harmful effects. For example, in John McDaniel's words on the negative effects of music in school,: "Music programs in school can promote competition and rivalry among peers. In most music programs, students compete for certain positions and chairs, and they must practice and oust their peers in order to climb the ranks in the section. This can lead to bad feelings and competitive values among young children, which can be harmful to their future development." It is understood why this has been stressed against music in schools. However, it is faulty. Other beliefs are that it does more harm than good because "it affects grades negatively". In the words of John McDaniel, "They claim that students will spend too much time on practicing, trips and performances, which will affect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Should Music Programs Be Allowed? Music is something that many people can easily get lost in, whether it is listening to it or playing it. One thing that no one thinks about often is the amount of funding that is actually given to the music programs, even the ones in Arizona. For some people, music is their world and for others, it is a source of relaxation. If the music programs in Arizona do not receive an adequate amount of funding, people will no longer be able to benefit from all the great things that happen within the program, such as scholarships. The music programs in Arizona deserve more funding than they are receiving now because the programs help improve academics, they promote motivation throughout life and they are necessary for many people in the world, even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Music programs can even help round out an education or some. "93% of Americans consider the arts to be vital to providing a well– rounded education for children and a critical link to learning and success" (Flowers, Klatzer and Pacheco). Without the proper amount of funding that a music program in Arizona needs, people will not be able to achieve the same amount of academic success as a music program that does receive a proper amount of funding. Another important factor in music programs is that they promote motivation within people. It is almost as if a sense of accomplishment is felt when one becomes proficient in what they are doing. People in music programs even get motivated to gain skills, such as people skills. "The gaining of people skills is necessary to collaborate with a group" (Catterall). People can be motivated in many different ways, some people just get motivated within "Links to the fundamental elements of emotional and motivational regulation help to account for the close ties that music has with the sense of self. An individual's concept of his or her musical self–summarizes and integrates the various elements of emotional and motivational regulation into a coherent whole" (Doucette et. al 95). Motivation is something that has to be felt within, not just on the surface. "Music programs helped give a deeper understanding of human behavior, motivation, diversity, ... • 17. Analysis Of Les Prludes S. 97 Les Préludes S.97 by Franz Liszt (October 22, 1811–July 31, 1886) is the third of his thirteen symphonic poems. The premiere took place at the Weimar Hoftheater on 23 February, 1854 under the baton of Liszt for a benefit concert. The instrumentation consists in three flutes (third also piccolo), two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, snare drum, cymbals, bass drum, harp and strings. The year 1847 was the year where Liszt was moving to Weimar to begin a new stage in his musical life, he took the decision to finish his career as a pianist and begin to dedicate to the composition, besides, he met the Polish Princess Carolyne zu Sayn–Wittgenstein, that she impulse his career as a composer. He found the necessity to evolve the music, and the way that he found was combining music with literature. In this essay I will discuss how Les Préludes evolve the symphonic genre. Mark Evans Bonds in "Absolute Music" discusses Liszt´s "Program" music. According with Bonds, Liszt in his "Harold" essay, he distinguishes between "¬¬specifically musical composer" and the composer driven by an overarching poetic image or narrative. In program music, the recurrence, variation, alteration, and modulation of motifs are determined by their relationship to a poetic idea. Liszt used the new term to identify a repertory of instrumental music which through an evocative title, a verbal program, or both, "draws the listener´s attention in advance toward a specific object". Bonds analyses the opinion of Liszt in his program music, how he tried to convince that program music is the next step in music evolve, the necessity of break form rules to adequate the music into literature (in the case of Liszt) and the fact that he was reinforcing the first ideas of combining music with other arts, like Berlioz in his "Symphonie Fantastique". Liszt proclaim himself as a Beethoven ´s successor, he felt that he had the necessity to create something new, as we know, the Weimar period of Liszt was dedicated to him as a composer, leaving aside the achievements of other composers like Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. He looked that form and harmony were like a formula after Beethoven, because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Reflection On Multiculturalism And Music For part two of this project, I decided to interview a friend that I became very close to and can relate a lot to since my time starting at the college, Joseph Ahn. I asked him four questions regarding the environment in which he was raised in, what the music education program was like there, how he would describe his own identity, and the outside influences that shaped his identity. This is significant to me because I think it is important to always get new and unique perspectives on your own ideas. It is imperative that researchers see multiple point of views so that they can create an accurate representation of what they are studying and what they want to accomplish. By simply looking at one's own experience is to only see one side of the argument. I want to make sure that I am not being as biased as possible. I believe that everyone should try to keep an open mind to everything that they learn and everything that they take a stance on. If you only look at one side of the argument, then you will never truly learn and grow. I also wanted to ask someone of color just like me because I feel like people of color bring unique perspectives on key topics especially to one pertaining to multiculturalism and music. Sometimes I feel as though the music world is predominantly made up of whites, and there is barely any representation of other races. The first question I asked him was: Can you describe what your town is like? Joe grew up in Piscataway Township. He told me that his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Persuasive Speech : Music Programs Should Be Kept Public... Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that music programs should be kept in public schools. Central Idea: The government should not cut music programs in public schools because they are beneficial to children, not only to their education, but also helps express themselves. Introduction I. Plato, a Greek philosopher once said "I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning." A. These words by Plato are what makes music programs important and beneficial to a child's education. B. However, during these tough economic times, music educators have to face the fight of budget cuts to keep their music programs in public schools. II. Without music programs, children will not succeed in school, nor will they be able to express themselves in society. III. After doing research for this speech, I hope to persuade each of you to let the government know that they can't cut music programs in public schools. (Transition: Let's start by looking at the causes of why music programs get cut in public schools.) Body I. School district decision makers make standardized tests their highest priority for students. A. According to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, it states that "school districts must measure and prove that students make 'adequate yearly progress '" on standardized tests. 1. • 23. A Very Brief Biography of Bethoven {Quote about Beethoven} According to musicologist Berry Cooper, Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770 in Bonn, Germany, where his father was the Kapellmeister. His father, Johann, was a respected tenor, violinist, and teacher of both the clavier and the piano. Although Beethoven is not considered a child prodigy, Beethoven did start music at an early age. Around age three, he would often sit on his father's lap and play has his father sang, and abandon his playmates to listen to his father perform. Some historians believe that he started taking formal piano lessons at age five, a normal age to start training in piano, from his father. Between the mix of Beethoven natural talent and his father's pedagogical experience, Beethoven excelled quickly as a piano and violin player. It was said that Beethoven's father was so intent on Beethoven's lessons, that he would often bring Beethoven to tears. When he was seven, he made his public debut in Cologne, with two other of his father's students, where he astounded the audience by the difficulty of music that was played.1 By 1779, his father could no longer teach the young composer and searched for other teachers. After going through many teachers Beethoven found Christian Gottlob Neefe who was the first to allow him to compose. In 1782, his first recorded work was a set of variations on a march by Ernst Christoph Dressler. This was then arranged by Neefe and published. This work, even from such an early age showed many ... Program music is the type of music that aims to evoke an image, or convey an impression of events. Program music is usually connected with stories, poems, ideas, or scenes. Program music has four types of manifestations: program symphony, tone/symphonic poem, concert overtures, incidental music. Program music, in general, has been around, in many forms, for centuries, but it became highly prominent in the romantic period, when the music was associated with literature. Also, in program music they aim for the music to express feelings more than descriptions. The first type of the program music is program symphony. A program symphony is a composition ... • 27. Music Programs In High Schools Essay Music plays an important role in a student's academic success. Being a part of a music organization gives students a place to belong and a place where they can express themselves. It gives students the drive to do well in school, helps build social skills through teamwork, and improves their focus level. In every school, there are students who do not like their core subject classes. I have several in my choir program and the only reason they get out of bed to come to school in the morning is so they can be in choir. Harris Interactive did a study in 2006 over graduation rates and they found that high schools with a music program had a graduation rate of 90% or greater. The national average graduation rate of those high schools that do not have a music program is 73% (Zuckerman 3). I believe the schools that have music programs have a higher graduation rate because students have a motivation to pass. As with other extracurricular activities, choir students have to pass their classes in order to sing or participate. I pay very close attention to my students' grades as they influence whether or not they can participate in activities such as UIL Concert and Sight Reading. At first, volunteering was simply a way for me to fulfill a community service requirement for school. I was assigned basic tasks such as delivering the mail, or transporting residents to church, lunch, whatever was asked of me. The time I dedicated was so enjoyable that I continued to volunteer after my requirements were complete. Gradually, I was given more jobs and responsibility which allowed me to directly interact with a greater amount of residents. Eventually, I was cooking snacks, preparing and leading group discussions, and helping organize weekly church service. These services, as I thought, were more than ... It is a gift I believed that the residents would appreciate so I decided to share the benefits of live music with my friends at Greenspring. Just playing bass on my own for a couple hours would have been incredibly difficult and likely not as enjoyable to the audience. Therefore, I devised a music outreach program to connect the elderly and student music communities. I presented my plan to the head of administration at Greenspring as well as the heads of local schools' Guitar, Orchestra, and Band departments. Next, I approached the student music organizations such as the Tri–M music honor society to solicit students for my program. Students of all backgrounds, disciplines, and passions then signed up and performed to fulfill their service requirements. While many initially volunteered for the same reasons as I did, many students became regulars within the program. Interacting with widely differing communities of musicians and elders bestowed upon me a crucial component of leadership: adaptability. I welcomed all residents, introduced each student, and the purpose of my program. To this day my fellow musicians and I perform special music exhibitions for the residents a few times a year. • 33. Budget Cuts are Destroying Music Education: Music... Throughout history music has played an important role in society, whether it was Mozart moving people with his newest opera or the latest album from the Beatles. Where would society be today without music? With schools cutting their music programs, the next Mozart may not get his chance to discover his amazing talent. Music programs are essential to education. To fully understand this one must understand how music helps the human body, why schools have cut music programs, and why people should learn music. According to Laurence O'Donnell, "Music is thought to link all of the emotional, spiritual, and physical elements of the universe." This proves that music is more than a simple class teaching random notes. It is a common denominator ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Music can affect the body negatively. One of these effects is the fact that music can be addictive (Severance). According a scholar, if people go to long without their preferred music they can have headaches. The same scholar later stated that this is caused by disharmonic tones. Disharmonic tones are found most often in hard rock music and popular pop music (Severance). However, it seems as though the positives of music out weighs the negatives. In harsh economic times, schools tend to cut music classes first. The current economic situation has not helped music classes. In an Arizona school district, the first classes cut were music classes (Rhoden). Rhoden states, "Tuesday evening, the Humboldt Unified School District Governing Board made the difficult decision to reduce the elementary music program..." • 35. The Importance Of Music Education The Importance of Music Education Music is a universal passion. Whether you are three years old or ninety years old, whether you are a democrat or a republican, or whether you are from North America or Africa, everyone finds joy and comfort in music. Music plays such an immense role in the day to day lives of people all around the world. So, why is the funding for music programs all around the country being slashed? The debate over whether music programs in schools benefit or hinder children's overall academic achievements. Proponents of the funding cuts argue that it simply costs too much money to sustain these music programs with all the instruments and sheet music they require, and that they are a distraction from the "more important" academic classes. On the other hand, opponents argue that providing kids with an education in music improves brain activity which in turn allows them to actually excel in other subject areas. While it is true that music can be distracting in some cases, it is extremely important to fund music programs in schools to give students the best academic opportunities possible. Proponents of funding cuts have very real and valid concerns for the education of children. People who support fund cuts for music programs often argue that they are not against music education, but that sometimes it just comes down to either cutting music classes or math and English classes, and math and English are just simply more important. • 41. Pros And Cons Of Creating The Budget I was assigned to cut the budget for year 1 and year 2 by $750,000 (total of $1.5 million over 2 years) by the CEO. I took a comprehensive look at the budget and my recommendations are that we should cut the number of participants from 1000 to 910 and let go of 3 staff members. These reductions would have a cascading effect and help us to cut the budgets of both years by 750,000 dollars. I believe that the quality of our program is more important than the number of participants we serve. Another important service that our program offers is background checks. These checks help increase the number of placements and retentions. Because of these goals, they followed some very specific ideas and wouldn't stray from them. Once the Romantic era hit, composers wanted to express a variety of things in their music. This is when the idea of program music appeared. Program music is usually instrumental music without spoken or sung words to explain the story or event that the composer has chosen to describe with his or her music. • 45. Scholarship Application for a Music Program Essay Music is one of the most fascinating aspects of a civilization, and yet it's importance is often overlooked by many in today's world. The existence of music dates well beyond any known civilization, and its gradual evolution drastically varies from culture to culture. To me, the notion that music is a mere reflection of society is a statement I used to take for granted. Although this notion is true to some degree, mainly with some popular music, my research has led me to conclude that all music influences society on a greater scale than one would assume. I moved on my own to a rural area in Washington State in an effort to live a more peaceful and self– sufficient life, and pursue new experiences. Once I moved, my taste in music gradually became more refined. I began to seriously practice the classical guitar and composed for it as well. Since then, I also started experimenting with binaural beats and have used them extensively in meditation and other disciplines. This led me to research the effects of particular frequencies exerted on the brain, and how they could easily be used to induce different brainwave frequency states. I discovered how playing music helps to create a lot of new neural networks, increase the bridge between the two brain hemispheres (corpus callosum) and develop higher levels of perception. But the rabbit hole was deeper than I thought. I read books on the influence of music on society throughout the ages. Each specific type of music has produced an effect on history, morals and culture. I found examples of drastic changes in music that led to drastic changes in civilization. Different styles of music within a society led to different coexisting ideals. Sometimes new popular music led to a social revolution. Much too often in America today, modern music and art programs in schools are perceived to many as extracurricular activities rather than important subjects that are vital to a students learning and skill development. The truth of the matter is that encouraging music and art education in public schools has a much larger impact on student's grades, academic performance, and the economy than the majority people realize. Within the next year city school budgets will be dropping by twenty five percent, and despite the fact that music and art programs have been showing a dramatic contribution to student's learning, this substantial drop in funding for the programs will lead to no dedicated money for art or music programs (Mezzacappa). Music and art programs are responsible for increasing school attendance, which can lead to being one of the most important things in a student's academic success in school. • 49. Music Programs Should be Kept in Schools Essay All school districts should retain music programs in their schools. Probably the most well–known supposed benefit of involvement in a music program is the Mozart Effect. The Mozart Effect claims that "performance on tasks of spatiotemporal reasoning may be improved for ten–fifteen minutes immediately after listening to part of a Mozart piano sonata or similarly complex music" (Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior, 580). While the Mozart Effect has little to back it, there are still many reasons music and other fine arts belong in schools. Many studies such as one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One such theory involves private music instruction (Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 582). One on one private lessons can promote the life–long need to learn. Music training started at an early age can improve the brain's ability to process different tones and patterns. This can benefit a person later in life when he or she is trying to focus in a room full of background noise. Ear–training, "the ability to discern subtleties in pitch and timing," ("Hearing the Music" par. 4) increases aptitude in children and adults when trying to learn a new language. Musicians are better able to pick out these changing subtleties in speech and tones than non–musicians. This skill, when applied to the learning disabled, improves speech comprehension ("Hearing the Music" par. 4). A 2003 study indicates that two years of music lessons can improve performance on arithmetic tests (Rauscher and LeMieux qtd. in Črnčec, Wilson, and Prior 583). In fact, music lessons can boost IQ levels simply because they provide a learning opportunity. The most widely cited neuro–scientific theory is one done by Leng and Shaw in 1991 which states: Music resonates with inherent neuronal firing patterns throughout the brain; thus, music listening and music instruction can prime the brain for improved performance on spatiotemporal and other cognitive tasks. Even if high school bands do not play classical music, there is a distinct difference between current music and band music. Also, teenagers today are exceedingly preoccupied with their studies, extracurricular activities, and jobs. Therefore, one usually has to decide which activity to focus on more or completely – sports or music, both activities that are equally time consuming. High school athlete participation has increased for the 24th consecutive year so far. Sadly, music does not prevail; there are not nearly as many student participants in high school music programs. The population of high school musicians in the US is shrinking. This is due to both schools putting music programs on the chopping block to save money and focus on core subjects, and students who today seem to have lost more interest in musical activities. Now more than ever, kids are less exposed to music activities in school, thus there is a smaller chance of one becoming involved in the music program. Even so, purchasing new instruments for the student and school is now difficult. Furthermore, the reduction of music educators leads to an overall poorer teaching of musicality. School music ... • 55. Review of The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by... Review of The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink in 2009 The Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 was composed by Beethoven and was completed in 1808. It is also referred to as "Pastoral Symphony." In 2009, Bernard Haitink conducted the performance of the symphony by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. From Haitink's concert on Beethoven's sixth symphony, I was expecting to see the original work of composer. The symphony has qualities of both the classical and romantic periods and illustrates composer's radical ideas as well as highlighting his classical influences. Its programmatic nature is the main romantic feature though the dramatic dynamic changes, as well as the use of percussion and brass, are also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Programmatic symphonies occurred primarily in the late– Romantic and Classical period. The repetition of the different subjects is a feature is a programmatic symphony and, therefore, a romantic trait. For example, the 'bird calls' produced by the strings in bar 151 are programmatic. Haitink's traversal of the 'Pastoral' is a fine achievement, established on tempi that strike the viewers. On the first movement, he takes it at a flowing, warm tempo. The Orchestra plays radiantly for him. The played symphony has a nice, firm bass line, revealingly enriched at intervals by the horns, and its attention to dynamics is meticulous throughout the whole symphony. The first movement ends in such a way that, the symphony can be heard as a wonderfully civilized and wise account of the performance. The second movement is designed beautifully. Once again the tempo is skillfully chosen. The woodwinds and the strings afford Haitink some fine playing and there are several lovely woodwind solos for the audience to enjoy. The third movement is lithe and light – this is a joyful and well–sprung dance. The subsequent storm is exciting, featuring some thrilling strikes on the timpani. The finale brings an excellent summary of the performance. In Haitink's experienced hands, the symphony is serene, displaying an inner radiance and warmth. The style is demonstrative and completely natural. The pacing is perfect and the playing is glowing. Even though Haitink shapes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Music Programs Should Not Be Allowed In Schools? The argument of whether music should or should not be allowed in school has been debated by educators, parents, and students for a long time. These programs provide the students opportunities to play instruments and sing during the school day. Music programs are usually the first thing to go when schools have to do a budget cut. Some people believe that there are too many negatives aspects of music programs, while others believe it is a great addition to schools. So people need to decide whether or not music programs saved or not allowed at all. In your article, you state four reasons why music programs should not be allowed in schools. The article states that music programs are a big budget concern for schools. There are many costs that go into music programs which include paying for required instruments, space for practices, concerts, extra music faculty and instructors. The school is not the only place affected by these costs, parents have to spend a great deal of money too. The parents of the students need to pay for their child's instruments, or lessons. Another point brought up in the article is that it distracts students from their academics. Music programs will take the students attention away from more important subjects like math and English. Having these programs will not allow students to put enough time into their homework and studying for tests, due to the amount of time it takes up. The students involved in these programs will also need to practice, attend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Music can help students in so many aspects of life, but schools aren't investing in the music program. (How much on average is a music program cost?) All high schools need to have elective music programs in order to see benefit their grade averages, to create career preparation, to build teamwork skills, and to boost student participation in school. Schools are so focused on grade improvement and getting better scores on state mandated tests each year that they are not taking the time to think about the benefit that music programs could achieve in this aspect. It has been proven that music students score higher on standardized tests than non–music students. (What percentage?) (Where else, how else do we see grade improvement?) If one is not correct in the timing, all will fall apart and phasing or ripples will happen. This will cause things to sound or look horrendous. If someone is off pitch, it will be noticed, and the audience will not enjoy that performance. (What more can I say about friendship?) There are also many team building exercises that are done when training in order for a successful show. THE INTRODUCTION I've listened to a lot of music in my 514,561,058 seconds of life. Of course the beginning first few years of my life did not consistent of heavy articulation and rhythm interpretation, rather it was to see if I could sing back the ABC's or mumble the Arthur theme song to my sister. Most of the music influence I have was harvested back when I was eleven. I listened to a wide variety of genres of music from pop, to rock, to rap, to country, to concert band music, even to Bollywood music as that's what would be playing in my home as my mom cooked food for all of us. This really changed my perception about music. I found myself enjoying the classical music that I would be playing on my clarinet, but I always kept it in correlation with the new sounds and technology music was sounding like. The new electronic based sounds created on the computer with the melodies and movement like a classical piece set that a part for me. I think this was generated by sounds from Kanye West and his albums such as Graduation, and 808s & Heartbreaks, even the blending of genres from Coldplay between pop tunes and classical music using implications such as organs, bells, and synthesizers in doing so. • 63. Music Programs Throughout The United States Music programs throughout the United States are making quite the hurrah, and yet seem to never be heard by the classmates and staff that walk the same halls as them. The lack of appreciation of the music and arts programs throughout America is astonishing, and heartbreaking to many of the students, parents, and staff that are involved with them. There are more than a few causes that can be held responsible, however the main three are a lack of funding, lack of support from administration and staff, and the lack of equal support amongst students involved in different activities, such as sports, clubs, and music programs, all of which have led to a decrease in student participation in music. However, there may be a solution in sight, with the help of some creative thinking on the part of the administration, the support of the staff members, and the acknowledgment of the student body. There are many benefits to music. It's a way for students to express themselves, create bonds, learn life skills, and improve their minds. Studies have shown that music can benefit a student academically, as well as mentally. Not only that, but if introduced in earlier childhood, music can actually help a child with their linguistic development. As stated by Laura Lewis Brown in her article The Benefits of Music Education, "While children come into the world ready to decode sounds and words, music education helps enhance those natural abilities." In research, based in London, Sarazin observes a program based for the purpose to improve the student's skill sets in certain areas. Although the program did not improve the children's skill of teamwork and self–discipline it shows educators and parents their child's view in their eyes. Sarazin interviewed students such as Michael, "So, my opinion is that Claudia should be stricter" (Sarazin, 2017, p. 10). Seeing how music affects children, positively and negatively, allows adults to see the best solution for lacking music programs. Although you must ask, Is the lack of music programs a good thing? Avoiding the negative experience, such as the children's experience in London, in paragraph 4, allows educators to understand the view that maybe the music program is the issue, as well as our own teaching methods or skill levels. Having music programs obviously expands a child's abilities in other cases, such as the children in juvenile centers, but what is the solution? Should music programs be important, or do they not matter? As most parents agree a child's interests are important, as well as being able to explore and find themselves. Music programs allow students to explore a new side, that not only fulfills their interest, but develops social skills. As parents raise their children supporting their interests and future, educators in music help push along the skills each child is developing. Whether the government provides "arts–rich" music programs in a school determines how much these children can explore music, while staying busy instead of in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Why Do Students Should Participate In Music Programs Today, many schools focus on preparing their students for their lives beyond the classrooms. They do so by focusing their limited resources on programs that they deem necessary for a proper education. Furthermore, when schools make cut backs, music programs are one of the first to be terminated. Ironically, music embodies many of the subjects that are not eliminated: mathematics, history, science, reading, etc. Music requires self–discipline, accountability, and teamwork: traits that most employers seek in young applicants. • 73. Disney 's The Pastoral Symphony Disney 's Fantasia (1940) lies in a class separate from all other animations of program music. While its initial reception was less than stellar, it has since become a standard film in home collections. Theatrical performances, games, and many other derivatives of the brand now exist. Despite this, it has also generated a fair amount of controversy. For example, it contains scenes that allude to Darwin's theory of evolution, and others that display negative racial stereotypes. Yet the most controversial scene at the movie's premiere was the animation of Beethoven 's Sixth, the Pastoral Symphony. This feature upset many classical music lovers who objected to the idea of giving Beethoven's symphony an explicit storyline and a set of images that he did not have in mind. The Pastoral Symphony is likely the most familiar example of program music, but most musicians and critics seem to agree that this does not give a free pass to any form of interpretation. In the intro to Fantasia, the narrator addresses this by cautioning the listener that the video clips were created based on the musical interpretations of animators, not of trained musicians. From that cautionary message to articles published as recently as this year, Fantasia remains a topic of controversy, influenced by factors such as audience familiarity and general views on Beethoven himself. The reach of this influence is not limited to reviews of the Pastoral Symphony feature, but rather extends to the whole ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Graduation High School Recorded Music Program I know how much of a cliche it is to begin this essay with the same, "I knew I wanted to be music ever since I was a little girl", line in which you've probably heard over a thousand times, but I can honestly say that music has been the only passion I have continuously stuck by. For example, the group, as a whole, decided on the materials and how to put the body system together. My experience with the Frankenstein project allowed me to understand the importance of group cooperation and communication. I learned in order to have a productive group you need to be willing to compromise and take others perspectives into consideration. Part of what makes group projects great are the multiple perspectives and ideas that are available, so it is necessary to take advantage of all of them. Another important aspect is communication. Whether it's over emails or text messages, knowing what is going on and when it is going on is key. Within this experience I also learned about what I can contribute into other collaborative environments. As a person I tend to be very easy–going and can get along with most everyone. I find it easy to contribute ideas whilst taking others into consideration. In school, I take part in multiple team/group work environments such as my school's soccer team and the student government. • 77. Personal Narrative: A Career In Music School I once had a teacher who told me, "There are no wrong notes, but how you play them, the feelings you put in and how you play them in time. It's all about your timing." This is one piece of advice that has always remained with me, and looking back over the past year, I can see that it adheres to far more than just music. A year ago, I thought that as long as I could play a solo like Stevie Ray Vaughn, I would be accepted into any college music program I applied to. However, I was very naïve when it came to the college application process, and did not know just what it took to get into the music programs I was looking at. Throughout high school, I really enjoyed playing the blues on my guitar. It was a skill that I believed would aid me greatly when it came time to audition. But, as I would find out quite harshly, I could not sight read nor did I adequately understand basic music theory.
