The Psychosocial Theory Of Human Development
A third development theory that I will discuss is called the "Psychosocial Theory." The psychosocial
developmental theory emerged from the work of psychologist Erik Erikson. Erikson argued that
human development was influenced by social experiences that take place through eight stages. In
fact, Erikson's theory was influenced by his experience in analyzing and studying of various types
of people from various backgrounds and culture. Thus, Erikson believed that human life evolved
through experiencing life crisis in each of the eight stages of development. Moreover, it is through
the experiences of life crisis and their eventual resolution that allows individuals to continue to
grow. According to Erikson, life crisis symbolized a time when vulnerability and possibilities were
intertwined (Fiore, 2011). Erikson proposed that life crisis's was an opportunity where an individual
was trying to achieve, while at the same time working towards creating a sense of self–eventually
this process would lead to the work of self–development. Stage 1: Basic trust vs. Mistrust (birth to
2years, infancy, hope, maternal), Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and doubt (2–3 years old, early
childhood, willpower, both parents or adults substitute), Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt (3–5, preschool,
nursery school, purpose, parents, family friends), Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority (5–12, middle
school, competence, school), Stage 5: Identity vs. Identity confusion (12–18, adolescence, fidelity,

The Phychosocial Theory Of Erikson's Psychosocial Development
Self–Analysis
Every person is a unique individual. Each of us possesses characteristics and traits that may be
influenced either by genetic, environmental factors or both. These two factors are constantly argued
in the field of psychology. In my opinion as counselor, both perspectives have its respective
strengths and weaknesses. It is important to a counselor like me, to have deeper knowledge about
the different personality theories because it allows me to know myself more and understand the
people around me especially the counselees who trust my ability.
The Psychosocial Development Theory of Erik Erikson identifies eight stages that individual has to
pass through from infancy to late adulthood stages. I remember when my sister asked me to look
after my nephew who was at 5 months old. I was afraid to carry him the moment he cried because
he looked so fragile. However, I remember what Erikson said about this stage that it is important to
establish trust to the caregiver and provide the basic needs of the infant otherwise, the mistrust will
be developed. The moment I carried my nephew and hand him a toy, he stopped crying and started
to suck the toy. From the perspective of Jean Piaget, infants have neonatal schemas or innate ability
even before they have more experience about the world. From there I understand clearly that babies
have incredible reflexes which are untold to them and that make them wonderful. As I continually
observe my nephew who appears to

Erick Erickson's Theory Of Psychosocial Development
Theory Erick Erickson (1950,1963) proposed to a psychoanalytic theory of psychosocial
development comprising eight stages from infancy to adult with each stage a person will experience
some sort of psychosocial experience that may have a negative or positive outcome for their
personal development. The psychosocial have eight stages each stage are depending the age of the
child. The stages are; trust vs mistrust this is the infancy stage at this stage the infant is uncertain
about the world they live in to end the feeling of uncertainty the infant looks upon their primary care
giver for stability, autonomy vs shame this is the early child hood stage children who complete this
stage successfully leave feeling secure and confident in themselves while for those who do not are
left with a sense of shame and doubt of self, initiative vs guilt play age children display curiosity
about the world, and begin to assert their power and contract of the world through direct play and
social interaction they also feel a sense of guilt when they take a negative initiative and are
punished, industry vs inferiority the school age if a child is praised for doing their best and
encouraged to finish task then industry may result, while the child who ant master their school work
may think of themselves as a failure and feeling inferiority may arise, identity vs role confusion the
adolescence stage this is the main stage and most important development task for adolescents are to
constructer their own unique sense of identity and find the social environment where they can
belong to and have meaningful relationship( Chen, Lay Wu, & Yao, 2007), intimacy vs isolation
young adult, adults who successful in resolving the conflict of this stage are able to develop deep
meaningful relationship with others while adults who struggles with this stage experience poor
relationship ( Cherry, Gans), generative vs stagnation adulthood stage failing to achieve this stage
they become stagnant and feel unproductive while success in it will lead to the feeling of virtue and
care(McLeod), and lastly ego integrity vs despair maturity stage to be successful in this stage the

How Is Freud And Erikson's Psychosocial Theory Of Development
Introduction
Understanding development and changes in children is an important part of teaching and upbringing
children. Theories of Human Development give us ideas to refer to understand and apply the
process of human development. "They can help us find sources of behavior and trends, and account
for the path that individuals follow, whether these can be called paths of growth or lack of progress.'
(Ayon, 2015) Different psychologists have contributed their theories which are helpful to understand
important concepts and issues related to child development. Sigmund Freud's psychosexual theory
and Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory are two important psychoanalytic theories that teacher's
parents and other care takers need to go through if they are involved in educating and raising
children.
In this assignment I will try to compare and contrast Sigmund Freud's psychosexual theory of
development and Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory of development.

Both theorists recognize the importance of the unconscious on development. They both assumed
that developments take place through a series of stages in a person's life and applied similar age
groups for the stages of development. Differences between Freud's psychosexual theory of
development and Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory
When we compare these two theories, there are many differences between these two theories. The
first difference I have notice is the way they described the stages. Freud proposed five stages of
development while Erikson proposed eight stages. Freud's psychosexual theory emphasizes the
importance of basic needs and biological forces, but Erikson's psychosocial theory is mostly focused
upon social and environmental factors. Erikson extended his theory into adulthood until death, while
Freud's theory ends at an earlier stage of development.

Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory of Development Report
The psychosocial theory of development was formulised by the German psychoanalyst Erik
Erikson. His theory considers the impact of external factors, parents, and the society, on personality
development from childhood to adulthood (Candida, 2010, p. 51). According to Erikson's theory,
every person must pass through a series of eight interconnected stages (split into general age ranges)
over their entire life cycle.
In this assignment, I will discuss these eight stages of development and how Erikson's theory is
similar to my own life. Furthermore, I will address how defining moments in the first stages
influenced my adolescence and identity. The first of Erikson's eight stages of development is
infancy (0 to 12 months). During this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this stage, teenagers feel they need to develop a sense of personal identity. Success in this
leads to an ability to stay true to who they are, while failure results in role confusion and weak sense
of their role in the world (AllPsych, 2009, ¶ 6).
During the first part of my adolescence, I was extremely shy with a very low self–esteem. Even
though I had moved schools since the last stage, I still felt as though I didn't fit in or have many true
friends. I found it really tough to find my identity and went through the first three years depressed. I
believe that it was the events that I experienced in the previous stage which influenced that person I
was during the first few years of adolescence.
It was only in the last couple years of high school when I became more confident in myself and who
I was. I achieved a sense of identity by developing close relationships with the young adults at my
church.
The next stage of Erikson's theory is young adulthood (18 to 35 years). Once we enter into this stage
we start to search for someone we can begin to share ourselves with more intimately. However, if
this does not happen, isolation and distance from others may occur (AllPsych, 2009, ¶ 7).
I am currently less than two months away from turning 18 and am therefore just entering into this
stage of life. Currently, I am in a relationship with a guy from my young adults group at church
named Daniel. We have dating for a

Comparison Of Attachment And Psychosocial Development Theory
Not one theory is more important than the next, each theory holds importance and are commonly
used to describe supported evidence acquired throughout the scientific method. A theory may
possibly rationalize how one interacts with others, human behaviors, or even how one may respond
to a specific stimuli. Social work practice models shows how social workers can carry out theories.
The practice models provides social workers with a blue print of how to be of assistance to others
based on supportive social work theory. (Simmons 2016) "While a theory explains why something
happens, a practice model shows how to use a theory to create an image." (Simmons 2016)
The two social work human behavior theories I chose to talk about today is the Attachment theory
and psychosocial development theory. I though these two theories would be the best to talk about
because, they has always been of interest to me. Attachment theory is a state of having a strong
emotional and physical attachment to at least one primary caregiver. This theory also attempts to
explain the changing aspects long term and short term interaction between individuals. According to
Simmons Staff Psychosocial development theory is an eight–stage theory of identity and
psychosocial developments articulated by Erik Erickson. Erickson believed that each person must

The key concept of this theory is, that a strong emotional and physical attachment to at least one
primary caregiver is critical to personal development (Psychologist World 2016). Bowlby proposed
that each child is born biologically pre– programmed form attachment to people. Attachment theory
does not have to be mutual. One may have an attachment to another person who may not share that
same attachment. In children, behaviors like seeking closeness with attachment figure when

Erik Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development
Erik Erikson was a German born, American developmental psychologist. He is known best for his
theory of psychosocial development, and creating the phrase "identity crisis". He practiced after
Freud, adopting some and disagreeing with some of his theories. Erikson continued the theory of the
id, ego, and superego. However, unlike Freud, Erikson believed that personality development cannot
be explained or identified solely based on sexuality. He believed that society and culture also
influence psychosocial development. According to Erikson, we are innately born with certain
personality traits and, then our environment and upbringing continue to mold us. Each stage of
development builds upon the previous and makes the way for the stages to come. Each stage would
have a "crisis" or a developmental hurdle to jump, but it is our ego's job to find a solution to further
development. In his theory there are eight stages. The outcome for each stage does not have to be
permanent, and can be changed by what we may experience in future stages of life. The first stage
of Erikson's developmental theory is trust vs. mistrust. This stage covers the entire first year of life.
During this stage, the most fundamental principle of life "trust" is formed. While this bond is
typically formed parentally during this year, psychologically wise it goes far beyond that. The child
having this trust allows them to form the basis for a sense of identity, otherwise mistrust brings with
it a

American Beauty And Erikson's Theory On Psychosocial...
THe film AMerican Beauty was reviewed to help explain Erik Erikson's theory on psychosocial
development. The psychosocial developmental theory consists of eight stages that humans go
through from infancy up unto a mature adult over 60. While watching American Beauty several
stages of psychosocial development were portrayed. The biggest takeaway from this movie showed
that one may fail in order to overcome Erikson's psychosocial development. The stage that was most
observed was the identity vs role confusion, during this stage according to our textbook
"Adolescents ask themselves "Who am I?" They establish sexual, political, religious, and vocational
identities or are confused about their roles." (Berger, 2017 Table 2.1) Upon reviewing American
Beauty I will include examples of the different types of behaviors demonstrated that reflect a
particular stage of development or crisis in their life.
American Beauty and Psychosocial Development Erik Erikson developed the psychosocial
development theory that consists of eight stages.
American Beauty and Psychosocial Development Erikson focused on the various stages of
personality development throughout the entire lifespan. "Erikson maintained that personality
develops in a predetermined order, builds upon each previous stage." (McLeod, 2013) The eight
stages begin at birth up and expand into maturity which is 65 years old and older. Erikson felt that a
crisis occurs at each stage of development and he focuses a lot on the adolescent period. As a person
moves on through life and completes each stage successfully it generally results in a healthy and
happy person, failure to accomplish basic virtues throughout the stages generally results to an
unhappy person and a negative sense of self. There is always ways to go back in the stages and
resolve them later on in life. Throughout the movie American Beauty (Mendes, Ball, Cohen, Spacey,
Bening, and Birch) there were examples of several stages of psychosocial development. In the very
beginning of the movie one of the main characters Lester is giving a brief introduction to his life. He
states how he feels dead inside and that basically he's unhappy with his life. Throughout the film

Analyzing Erikson's Psychosocial Development Theory
Erikson was a theorist who focused on his theory for psychosocial development. The article
Psychosocial Identity Development Theories, highlights the keys points and idea of Erikson's
psychosocial theory. Erikson was very focused on the idea of ego identity and obtaining full
potential. His theory or "model" stats that, "identity formation is based on overcoming conflicts that
individuals encounter during adolescent and early childhood."(Karkouti, 2014, p.257) He believed
that all people must endure certain conflicts in their lives, and then overcome them in order to obtain
their ego identity. The idea of psychosocial development is focused on social conflicts, and
environmental factors. In the psychosocial model that Erikson created, it places people into eight
stages. In order for someone to move on to the next stage, they must first overcome the conflict
presented to them in the stage that they are in. A well–established identity will get stronger the more
that conflict is successfully resolved. The eight stages are basic trust versus mistrust, autonomy
versus shame and doubt, initiative verses guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity versus identity
diffusion, intimacy versus isolation, generativity versus stagnation, and ego integrity versus despair.
In this article, it not only focuses on the main idea for psychosocial development, but it continues by
then saying that the theory has two criticisms, "stages are descriptive and they are difficult to be

Stages Of Psychosocial Theory: Trust Vs. Mistrust
Psychosocial Stage 1 – Trust vs. Mistrust The first stage of Erikson's theory of psychosocial
development take place between birth and one year of age and is the most important stage in life. As
an infant is very much dependent, the development of trust is constructed on the dependability and
quality of the child's caregivers. At this time in development, the child is totally depending upon
adult caregiver for everything such as food, love, safety, nurturing, and everything. If a child
positively develops trust, he or she will feel safe and secure in the world. But, if a caregiver neglects
or fails to provide adequate care and love, the child will come to the sense that he or she cannot trust
or rely upon the adults in his or her life. Failure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shame and Doubt The second stage of Erikson's theory of psychosocial development happens
during early childhood and is centred on children developing a greater common sense of personal
control. At this stage of development, children begin to gain a little bit of independence. They are
beginning to carry out basic actions on their own and coming up with simple decisions about what
they prefer. By giving chances for children to make choices and gain control, caregivers can help
children cultivate a sense of autonomy. Like Freud, Erikson assumed that toilet training was an
important part of this process. Yet, Erikson's way of thinking was rather different than Freud's.
Erikson believed that ability to control one's bodily functions indicates to a feeling of control and a
sense of independence. Other significant events involve gaining control over food choices and
clothing selection. Children who do well to complete this stage will feel secure and confident,
whereas those who do not are left with a sense of inadequacy, shame and self–doubt. Erikson
believed that reaching a balance between both autonomy and shame and doubt would develop the
virtue of will, which is the belief that children can act with intention, within reason and

Erik Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory Essay
Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory states that we go through 8 developmental stages in life. Erikson
states that these stages are necessary in the progression and development of human growth from
infancy into adulthood. Each developmental stage presents a crisis that must be resolved during that
stage for a healthy development. Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory outlines that we develop in
psychosocial stages instead of psychosexual ones. I agree with Erikson because one might not get
through the entire crisis within the stages which causes one not understanding themselves and their
identity , the eight stages are a great way to explain the developmental stages that occurs throughout
our life span. Erikson's theory considers children development in terms of their potential to nurture
and simplify healthful emotional and psychological feature progress. Erikson concluded that
children should not rush their development. He perceived eight unique phases of development,
which were trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame & doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs.
inferiority, identity vs. confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation and integrity vs.
despair (Cherry, 2011). Each developmental section is major and must be allowed time to

Erikson 's Psychosocial Development Theory Essay
In this research project several individuals, both parents and children were surveyed and asked
various questions to see what their views on morals and values were and if teaching them had an
impactful effect on children. With the secondary research conducted the teachings of morals and
values will be linked to socialization as well as being looked at through different developmental
theories. Many pages in the Individuals and Families, Diverse Perspectives (Holloway, Holloway &
Witte, 2010) will be used to help relate the primary research to the secondary research of this
project. The ways of socializing children will be mentioned as well as the concept of teaching
morals and values to children and how it can be explained through different developmental theories.
Teaching morals and values to children can be explained through many developmental perspectives
but can better be explained through Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Development theory as well as
Symbolic Interactionism. Erikson's Psychosocial Development theory looks at, "predictable stages
of human development from childhood to adulthood," (Holloway et al., 2010, p.101). Psychosocial
Development assumes that, "There is a depicted series of eight stages in which an individual's
identity emerges and matures" (Holloway et al., 2010, p.100). Whereas Symbolic Interactionism
explains, "How individuals behave based on their perceptions of themselves and others," (Holloway
et al., 2010, p.39). It also describes that,

Erik Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development
Introduction
This paper will discuss one of the most popular and influential theories in developmental
psychology, which is Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development. It is a very interesting
theory, and although it was influenced by Sigmund Freud, it centers more on the social component
rather than the psychosexual stand of Freud.
According to Erikson, our personal development occurs as we interact daily with others and have
new experiences that shape us throughout our lives.
This paper will review the eight stages of the psychosocial theory:
1. Trust vs. Mistrust
2. Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
3. Initiative vs. Guilt
4. Industry vs. Inferiority
5. Identity vs. Identity Confusion
6. Intimacy vs. Isolation
7. Generativity vs. Stagnation
8. Integrity vs. Despair
This paper will also discuss the contributions and impact of this theory as well as any criticisms it
has received.
Erik Erikson's Biography
Erik Erikson was born on June 15, 1902, in Frankfurt, Germany, of Danish parents. He was raised
by his stepfather and mother, and it wasn't until his adolescent years that he discovered the truth
about his parentage, which motivated him to learn more about understanding one's identity.
In the late 1920's he studied the theories of Sigmund Freud at the Psychoanalytic Institute in Vienna,
where he developed and named his own theories as psychosocial development. In 1930 he married
Joan Serson, a dancer and artist. (New York Times) In 1933 they moved to the United

develops and evolves in eight stages from birth to death. Each one occurs in a predetermined order;
the current stage builds upon the previous one and lays the groundwork for future stages
(Wikimedia). Each stage has a specific "crisis" or conflict, a turning point in the individual's life
which must be reconciled before moving on to the next. If the conflict is handled well, the
individual gains "ego strength" in the form of a corresponding virtue. If the conflict is handled
poorly, the individual not only fails to develop that virtue, but his/her ability to complete later stages
is hindered resulting in diminished "ego quality" or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

surrounded by friends and family trying to console me, I had never felt more alone. I was surprised
when their sympathy turned into impatience. When it took more than a few weeks for me to "get
over it," I was labeled a complainer. I quickly realized that no one truly understood what it was like
to lose the one person in their life whom they are closest to. I became socially withdrawn, only

Erik Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory Of Development
Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Theory of Development Erik Erikson, a German psychologist of the
early 1900s, is most known for his theory on psychosocial development in humans. He was heavily
influenced by his work with Anna Freud and her father, Sigmund Freud. However, in his research,
he put emphasis on the cultural and social impact on identity development and studying the ego,
which he believed developed with successful crisis resolving throughout life ("Erikson's Stages",
2007). He proposed the life–long model of development, consisting of eight stages. Erikson assumes
that in every stage of development, there is a crisis that the individual must overcome despite the
conflict of their psychological needs and the needs of society (McLeod, 2008, ¶9). With
achievement of the basic virtue associated with each stage, the individual can move forward with
their development. The conflict between the ego and societal experiences, Erikson coined as an
"identity crisis" ("Identity Formation", 2015, ¶2) The ultimate idea with the stages of development
is that these struggles must be overcome by individuals in order to find their sense of identity and
self–knowledge. His theory heavily influences education, however not like many would expect. His
research lies in helping people understand the importance in a positive relationship between students
and teachers. Erikson's Career For Erikson's time, he was widely recognized and his theories readily
accepted. A former co–worker of

Erik Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory
Erik Erikson 's psychosocial theory and Sigmund Freud 's psychosexual theory are two well–known
theories of personality development with various similarities and differences. While Erikson was
influenced by Freud 's ideas, his theory differed in a number of important ways and was ultimately
created to be an improvement to Freud's personality development theory (Friedman & Schustack,
2012). Like Freud's psychosexual theory, Erikson agreed that personality progresses in a sequence
of predetermined phases. However, unlike Freud's theory of psychosexual stages, Erikson's theory
describes the impact of social experience across the whole lifespan (Hoare, 2005). According to
Freud's psychosexual theory, personality develops across 5 sexual stages while Erikson's develops
among 8 social stages. Freud's theory has fewer stages due to his belief that the last stage of identity
develops during adolescence, while Erikson's theory had more stages because he believed an
individual's identity continually evolved over their entire lifetime (Hoare, 2005). The 5 stages of
Freud's theory: Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency and Genital, will be discussed, compared and contrasted
with Erikson's 8 stages: Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Doubt, Initiative vs. Guilt, Industry vs.

Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory And Psychosocial Development
Theories and Theorists
Theories are the building blocks of psychology. Theories whether old or new has allowed us to
know what we know now. There are many theories in the field of psychology or educational
psychology that are important to further understand human behavior. However, this paper will focus
on only two theories which are; Erikson's psychosocial theory and Alfred Adler's Adlerian theory.
Erik Erikson's psychosocial development has always been a great contribution to the field of
psychology by Erik Erikson (Berk, 2007). Erikson suggested that everyone experiences a series of
psychosocial stages instead of psychosexual stages as proposed by Sigmund Freud. Despite the fact
that Erikson disagreed with Sigmund Freud in so many areas in his psychosexual theory, it was
actually Freud's psychosexual theory that helped Erikson formulate his own psychosocial theory and
Erikson was very much influenced by Sigmund and his work (Erikson, 1968). So even if Erikson
disagreed with Freud, Sigmund actually contributed to Erikson's psychosocial theory because if it
wasn't for Freud's shortcomings in his psychosexual theory, Erikson would not have come up with
his own psychosocial theory (Erikson, 1968).
Freud and Erikson hold opposite views on many things. However, they did agree on a few things to
like how they both believed that personality develops in a series of set stages. But dissimilar from
Freud's theory of psychosexual stages, Erikson's theory depicts the influence of

Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development
When I was in high school, I used to babysit. After each job, I'd not only leave a little richer, I also
left with some pretty funny stories. The kids always had some pretty interesting information to share
with me. I had one tell me that he could talk to horses, and had another that was convinced that the
tooth fairy lived in his closet. Although I find it funny now, when I was their age, I probably had
some pretty crazy thoughts myself. This is account to the different stage we go through during our
psychosocial development. In Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, we go through eight
distinctive stages each with a crisis we must overcome. With successful completion of each stage
resulting in a healthy personality and the acquisition of basic virtues. These stages include Trust vs.
Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt, Initiative vs. Guilt, Industry (competence) vs. Inferiority,
Identity vs. Role Confusion, Intimacy vs. Isolation, Generativity vs. Stagnation, and Ego Integrity

Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory Of Development Essay
In this Individual Theory Paper, I decided to write about Erikson's Psychosocial Theory of
Development. Erik Erikson is greatly influenced by Freud but instead of concentrating on
psychosexual stages, Erikson choose to focus more on the individual's psychosocial stages as well
as their personality development. Psychosocial theory can be defined as a study about human
development as an outcome of the interaction in which involves the psychological or the needs of an
individual, and the expectations from their society (Merriam–Webster, 2016). Freud's stage theory
was too specifically focused on an individual's body zones, and he also vaguely discussed about the
interaction between children and their significant others wherein Erikson was trying to elaborate by
introducing some comprehensible concepts stage by stage in his theory (Crain, 2011). In Erikson's
theory, he tend to highlight the role of society as well as the conflict that can occur, and this made
Erikson an 'ego' psychologist. An assumption was made that every stage is faced with different
conflicts and if the individual fail to resolve it at that time, it will be dragged into their next stages of
life. Thus, Erikson suggested a lifespan model of development for his theory that is set well in eight
stages. The first stage is the most important development stage and it looks into the individual's
basic trust versus mistrust. This happens during an individual's infancy period whereby the infant is
still uncertain of

Erik Erikson's Theory Of Psychosocial Development
Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development suggests that one's psychological and social
development can be categorized into eight distinct stages throughout their lifespan (Karkouti, 2014).
Each stage has its own unique crisis that is vital to the gradual growth of one's psychosocial identity,
depending on the outcome (Sokol, 2009). This theory is observed in my life development from ages
0 to 19, which is then analyzed to the psychosocial identity I have developed today.
This age is the stage of trust versus mistrust crisis, whereby one's basic needs are met by the

Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development
My Reflection of Erikson Erik Erikson was a developmental psychologist known for his theory of
psychosocial development. Unlike other theorists of his time Erikson's theory focused on human
development across the lifespan from birth to late adulthood. Erikson believed that development
change occurs throughout our lives in eight distinctive stages that emerge in a fixed pattern and are
similar for all people. Erikson argued that each stage presents a crisis or conflict which results in
either a positive or negative outcome (Feldman p.16). In this essay I will identify incidents in my
own life that demonstrate each stage of development according to Erikson that I have lived through.
I will also interview my Aunt Tami, who will share her experiences for the remainder of the stages
of Erikson's development that I have not gone through thus far. Erikson's first stage of development
is the Trust versus Mistrust stage that occurs from birth till 18 months of life. According to Erikson
this is the period in which infants develop a sense of trust or mistrust, depending largely on how
well their caregivers meet their needs (Feldman p. 187). During this stage of my life I was being
taken care of by both Mom and Dad, but primarily by Mom. My Mom was a stay at home parent
while my Dad worked. Both my parents went above and beyond to make sure I had everything I
needed food, shelter, clothes and most importantly love and affection. Through my positive
experience in this stage I developed

Erikson's Psychosocial Theory
Many children around the world have been neglected and abused. Abuse and neglect can be
damaging not only throughout childhood but also throughout adolescence, adulthood, and even the
next generation as well. Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory helps better understand the internal
thoughts throughout the lifetime of those who have been abused and neglected during childhood.
Erikson's psychosocial theory has many stages that focus on different parts of a person's lifetime
such as Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt, Industry vs. Inferiority, Intimacy vs.
Isolation, and Generativity vs. Stagnation. Children that have been neglected or abused can have

Erikson's stage, "Intimacy vs. Isolation" is discussing how adults either want to be with and around
with others or become isolated and reject others company. This stage provides some insight into the
rejection or acceptance of the children of the abused. Most of the time the children of the abused do
not get the attention they need due to the intimacy issues of their parents (Ehrensaft et al., 2015, p.
16). Erikson's stage "Trust vs. Mistrust" can go along with this point as well. If the parent is
neglecting the child, the child will not get what it needs from the parent. Therefore, the child will
have a problem trusting others later on in their lifetime (Ehrensaft et al., 2015, p. 17). Another one
of Erikson's stages, "Generativity vs. Stagnation" is discussing how adults either want to contribute
to their children meaningfully or not at all. Most of the children in this study get no positive
contribution from their parents. Erikson's stage "Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt", can help better
understand this point. If the parent does not spend time with their child they can also keep their
child from learning abilities and skills that they need to know. If the child does not learn the
necessary skills required to do certain and basic things, they may begin to doubt their own

Freud 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development
The lifespan perspective is crucial for understanding human development. There are many different
perspectives on the lifespan and the lifespan has been broken down in many different ways. A
variety of scholars and theorists have proposed unique perspectives on lifespan. Sigmund Freud's
theory of psychosocial development considered five lifespan stages; oral, anal, phallic, latency, and
genital (Rathus, 2014). Erik Erikson expanded Freud's theory with a psychosocial perspective on
development and considered the lifespan to consist of eight stages. He viewed and labeled these
stages in terms of crises that individuals are faced with at each stage in their life. This is an
important perspective because it indicates that all aspects of our lives are related and that the person
we are today is a direct result of what we experienced earlier in our lives. Other sources view the
lifespan as having nine stages broken into numeric age categories (Annenberg Foundation, 2015).
From a leisure perspective, five lifespan stages are considered (Godbey, 2008). These lifespan
perspectives exclude the prenatal stage. From an overall human development viewpoint, I think it is
important to include the prenatal stage and I would break the lifespan down into the same eight
stages identified by Rathus (2014). In Rathus' (2014) text, eight lifespan stages are identified;
prenatal, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle
adulthood, and late

The Psychosocial Theory Of Life Span Development
Developmental Analysis
Melissa Snyder
Liberty University
Abstract
Life span development, and ultimately who we are and become as a person, is influenced by many
different things that include biologic, cognitive, and socio–emotional factors. These different areas
of development can be positively or negatively affected by environmental factors and stressors. If
those negative environmental factors are not dealt with by the time a person reaches adulthood,
there is a likelihood that the person will develop dysfunctional personalities and struggle to maintain
healthy relationships. According to Eric Erickson, those positive and negative environmental factors
influence the individual 's development differently when it is experienced during a particular stage
of development. Erickson 's psychosocial theory of development asserts that there are eight stages of
development that each person passes through over the course of their life. Each stage has a specific
goal that can be attained by resolving particular conflicts. This conflict resolution will result in a
healthy, well balanced individual. This paper will look at each stage of Erickson 's psychosocial
theory of life span development and how it applies to my own development.
Erik Erikson 's theory of psychosocial development was greatly influenced by Freud and his
psychoanalytic theory. Both Freud and Erikson believed that the life span included distinct stages

Analyzing Erikson's Psychosocial Theory
Erikson's Psychosocial Theory is the one that would stick with me the most. Lot of it makes sense
because with the different stages he's mentioned such as trust vs mistrust, identity vs role confusion,
intimacy versus isolations to integrity vs despair. The trust vs mistrust sticks because of some of the
stories and clips that was in class. With trust vs mistrust the idea is if a child has bad things happen
in certain situations the child will begin to mistrust. While for trust if positive reinforcement is
established the child begins to develop self control and learns to redirect there feelings or emotions.
In one video about an abused girl she was redirecting her anger toward her baby brother which came
from the mistrust of her abuser.

Erik Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development
Erik Erikson was an ego psychologists who developed one of the utmost popular and prominent
theories of development. While Erikson's theory was influenced by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud 's
work, Erikson 's theory centered on psychosocial development rather than psychosexual
development. Erik Erikson 's theory of psychosocial development is one of the best–known theories
of personality in psychology. Much like Sigmund Freud, Erikson believed that personality develops
in a series of stages. Unlike Freud 's theory of psychosexual stages, Erikson 's theory describes the
impact of social experience across the whole lifespan.
One of the main elements of Erikson 's psychosocial stage theory is the development of ego identity.
Ego identity is the conscious sense of self that we develop through social interaction. According to
Erikson, our ego identity is constantly changing due to new experiences and information we acquire
in our daily interactions with others. As we face each new stage of development, we face a new
challenge that can help further develop or hinder the development of identity.
When psychologists talk about identity, they are referring to all of the beliefs, ideals, and values that
help shape and guide a person 's behavior. The formation of identity is something that begins in
childhood and becomes particularly important during adolescence, but Erikson believed that it is a
process that CONTINUES throughout life. Our personal identity gives each of us an integrated

PSYCHOSEXUAL AND PSYCHOSOCIAL THEORY OF

Human development is a lifelong process, which describes the growth of human throughout the life.
There are many developmental theories which provide a set of guiding principles and concepts of
human growth and development including physical, behavioral, cognitive and emotional growth and
change. Out of those theories
Psychosexual and Psychosocial theories are the two main theories of Psychoanalytic .
Here I am going to focus on these two theories of development and highlight what these two
theories have in common and how they differ.
The theory of psychosexual development is one of the well –known and controversial theories of

According to both the theorists t he child's personality depends on the success of going through all
these stages, because the childhood trauma can change the development of personality. In addition,
it is important for individuals to overcome these different stages of developme nt in a positively
balanced way in order to develop their minds and beliefs.
However, there are several differences as well within these two theories of psychosexual and
psychosocial development. Even though both theorists believe that personality develops in a series
of stages, there are differences that exist between the names of the stages and the developmental
issues that are faced during each stage.
The main difference is that unlike Freud's theory of psychosexual stages, Erikson's theory describes
the impact of social experience across the whole lifespan. Freud's psychosexual theory emphasizes
the importance of basic needs and biological forces, while Erikson's psychosocial theory is based
upon social and environmental factors.
Furthermore, Freud's conflict centers on sex, while Erikson's theory takes psychosocial approach,
which means that people are shaped by society and need to be part of that

a referral from his school counselor. Mr. Sanchez's performance at school has been declining post a
fight in which he was involved in at school. According to the school, four White students engaged
Mr. Sanchez in a physical altercation, during which racial slurs were used. Mr. Sanchez's mother

jumpiness, and stress after the fight.
Theoretical Framework
Psychosocial Theory
Erik Erikson believed that the social environment plays an important role in personality
development, and thus he developed the theory of psychosocial development. Erikson believed that
that personality development occurs throughout our lifespan, and highlighted the influence of family
system, society, and culture in our development. Erikson accepted Freud's basic psychosexual
framework and he expanded on the development at each stage and expanded the stages to cover the
lifespan. Erikson believed that at each stage we gain attitudes and skills that make us active and
contributing members of society.
Per Erikson, our ego identity is constantly changing due to new experiences and information that we
acquire throughout our daily interactions with others. In addition to ego identity, Erikson also
believed that a sense of competence also motivates behaviors and actions, and that each

Psychoanalytic Theory Vs. Erick 's Psychosocial Theory
Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory vs. Erick's Psychosocial Theory Many follow the theories of ether
Freud's or Erickson's that the use of development is through a variety of stages throughout life.
People may believe in one over the other as they are both different theories. While Sigmund Freud,
a Viennese physician who is well known for his revolutionary ideas on psychology and psychiatry,
but also on Western thought in general. He states that "If electronic media were hazardous to
intelligence, the quality of science would be plummeting" (894). However, Freud's and Erickson's
theories stand apart in many ways, but both agree that personalities develop in a series of
predetermined stages.
Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory
His theory suggests that unconscious forces act to determine personality and behavior. In which is a
part of the a person's personality where they 're unaware "conscious awareness", such as infantile
wishes, desires, demands, and needs that are hidden because of their disturbing nature. He states that
"the unconscious is responsible for a good part of our everyday behavior" (Robert 13). Freud would
argue that personality is formed during childhood and that everyone's personality is among three
necessary structures of the human mind: the id, ego, and superego. According to Freud, children go
through five stages the oral stage (0 to 18 months), anal stage (18 months to 3 years), phallic stage
(3 to 6 years), latency stage (6 to puberty), genital stage (puberty to

Erik Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory Essay
There are many methods for studying human social development. In Erik Erikson's psychosocial
theory, social interactions are an important and determining factor of lifespan development.
Although Erikson was influenced by many of Sigmund Freud's studies, his studies were based upon
psychosocial development versus psychosexual development. Erikson, like Freud, emphasized the
importance of childhood on personality development, but unlike Freud, he believed that
development occurred across the entire lifespan. Erikson thought personality developed through a
series of eight stages each signified by a "crisis". According to Erikson, if the individual
successfully overcomes the situation it helps to develop a lifelong skillset, but if the crisis is not
successfully resolved it may hinder development. The sense of competence or the sense of
inadequacy at each stage ultimately develops an individual's identity or "all of the beliefs, ideals,
and values that shape and guide a person's behavior (Cherry)." By examining my own social
development through life and gathering information from my parents, specifically about my
childhood, I made many comparisons to and connections to my own identity. As Erikson's stages are
confined by age, I considered the first five stages of the psychosocial theory of development and
related them to my life. Trust versus mistrust is Erikson's first stage and occurs during infancy,
which is from birth to about two years of age. Because of an infant's

The early adulthood developmental stage starts in the early 20s and continues up to early 30s.
During this stage, young adults are more concerned with the development of their ability to form
relationships, share intimacy, and find intimate love (Berk, 2017). Normally, long–term
relationships that lead to marriage and childbearing are formed (something is missing here, end the

Cognitive development ( of who, a child, specify) at this stage is characterized by realistic and

Psychosocial And Cognitive Learning Theories
Psychosocial and Cognitive learning are just a few of the theories that describe the makeup of
human development and behavior. Psychosocial theories explore the relationship between the social
environment and an individual's psychological condition (Crawford and Hawford, 2011). Whilst
Cognitive Learning Theory explains certain behavioral responses of people based on their
understanding and mental representation of what is happening at the present time. This theory also
explores a person's everyday interaction within their environment and recognizes various social
treatments as having an influential impact on a child's development (Crawford and Walker, 2010).
More specifically, this review of literature will be focusing on key aspects of Psychosocial and
Cognitive Learning theories through the Attachment Theory and Piaget's work respectively.
"Attachment theory is a psychological, evolutionary and ethological theory concerning relationships
with humans," (Becknel, 2012). John Bowlby initially developed the Attachment Theory in 1930,
however, this theory was further extended in the 1950s through to the 1980s when Bowlby
collaborated with Mary Salter Ainsworth (Bowlby and Ainsworth, 1992). Bowlby theorized that in
order for a child's social and emotional behavior to develop normally, a child must develop at least
one relationship with a primary caregiver. This attachment must occur within the first three years of
the infant's life and be with a caregiver that is consistently

Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development Essay
Growing up experiencing his own identity crisis and misfortunes during his childhood, Erik
Homberger Erikson, a well–known psychologist, used this as an inspiration to further one's
understanding of a healthy personality and sense of self. This gave rise to his successful
establishment of the theory of Psychosocial Development. Although derived from Sigmund Freud's
theory of Psychosexual Development, Erickson believed that a person's social experiences cause a
great impact on their sense of identity throughout their entire lifespan in eight different stages of
development, as opposed to the five stages Freud assumed ended when a person reaches early
adulthood (Cherry. 2016). Erickson theorized that a person's ability to successfully complete a stage
of development, regardless of their developmental challenges, directly affected the outcome of a
healthy or unhealthy personality and sense of self. In his attempt to exceed further in understanding
how a person's social environment affects their personality and identity, Erikson's findings became
great contributions to the study of psychology. On June 15, 1902, Erikson was born in Frankfurt,
Germany, to Karla Abrahamsen, a Jewish stockbroker, as Erik Salomonsen at birth (GoodTherapy.
2007–16). His mother married his pediatrician, Theodor Homberger, in 1905, when Erickson was
about three years old (The Famous People. 2007). His last name was changed to Homberger, when
his step father officially adopted him in 1911, and it

Analyzing Erikson's Psychosocial Theories
Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Theory places everyone into stages, from the days where they still need
diapers and bottles, to the days where they can barely remember who they are. We all go through the
stages in life where we learn to walk, communicate, and trust. How easy we are influenced and how
we feel internally is what helps us understand how we are placed within these stages.
With me being 18 years old, I am placed into the Identity vs. Role Confusion stage. According to
David (2014), "An adolescent must struggle to discover and find his or her own identity, while
negotiating and struggling with social interactions and "fitting in", and developing a sense of
morality and right from wrong." (para. 7). I believe there is a close fit between these ... Show more

Eric Erikson's Theory Of Psychosocial Development
Developmental psychology is a study of the growth and the maturation of a person over time. How
the individual grows psychically, cognitively and how they are socially over time. All of these
factors shape us into the person new become. I have decided to study in and focus on Erik Erikson's
theory of psychosocial development. He takes a closer look on the choices that we are forced to deal
with and the conflicts they make during different parts of their life. His theory has eight theories,
there are different types of problems and conflicts with each stage that an individual will encounter
and have to resolve. It's important to deal with these conflicts that are presented to the individual
during the stages, because if they are not taking care of the individual will end up struggling with
them later on in life. Erikson has a developmental process that explains the development between
infancy to adulthood. He explains this within 8 stages; during these stages the individual
experiences crisis which could have a positive or a negative outcome on the person's personality.
Erikson is known as an ego psychologist focusing on culture and society and the conflicts that can
take place with someone's ego (McLeod, S). The first stage is trust vs. mistrust this occurs during
the first year of life where the infant is uncertain about the world and they have to develop feelings.
The infant finds hope in trusting someone, and has to figure out who they will choose not to trust.

Analyzing Erikson's Psychosocial Development Theory
Eric Erikson was one of the most remarkable theorists of the twentieth century. One of his famous
theory is the psychosocial development theory. This theory comes in different stages as part of
human development. The first stage of Erikson's psychosocial development is the trust vs mistrust
stage which occurs from birth to 12 months old. Erikson proposed that "infants learn about the basic
trustworthiness of their environment from their caregivers" (Dunn & Craig, 2013, p.14). This is the
stage where newborns and infants long for the affection of their maternal needs and touch. My
parents and I were talking about how I was when I was a newborn until my early childhood. I asked
them whether I was breastfed or by bottle, they told me that I was fed by bottle because my mom
didn't really like the feeling of breastfeeding. I had to adapt to the situation of not having my mom's

Erikson mentioned that "intimacy involves more than sexual intimacy. It is the ability for an
individual to share oneself with another person of either sex without fear of losing personal identity"
(Dunn & Craig, 2013, p.14). This stage is usually from between 18 to 40 years old. This is the stage
where I am currently on right now. I'm still trying to find different similarities with other friends of
mine. I've had relationships before but it was all short term relationships. I've never had a long term
relationship or any real intimate relationship due to the fact that I've never found the right person
yet. The stages that Erikson proposed for psychosocial development is a very good technique on
guiding the conflict that different stages of human development. Although it only covers a minimal
aspect of the development like certain attitude of the individual towards other people and the overall
outlook in life. Also Erikson built this theory based on his normal experiences and not really based

Psychosocial Development Theory Erik Erikson postulated eight psychosocial stages, an innovation
to the five stages of development of Dr. Sigmund Freud. Each of the psychosocial stages are present
at birth but only begin to unfold according to the childrens' ecological and cultural upbringing. Each
stage is marked by a psychosocial crisis that needs to be resolved so that the individual can move to
the next stage of development (Heffner, 2014). The developmental task for the preschoolers in this
theory is to achieve a sense of initiative and overcome sense of guilt. Erikson believed that children
in this stage begin to plan activitites, make up games, and initiative activities with others. In this
theory, parents and other care takers take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Piaget believed that children are like "little scientists" and that they actively try to explore and make
sense of the world around them. He developed a stage theory of intellectual development that
includes four distinct stages: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage
and formal operational stage. In his stages especially the second stage which is the preoperational,
the child rises above simple sensory experiences. Words can be used as symbolic representations of
objects and events. Children in the preoperational stage can be egocentric. They cannot distinguish
between themselves in the place of others. At this stage, the child does not seem to be capable of
certain logical operations and the child thinks that more things are alive than an older child or adult
would. Further, because the child is egocentric, there is a tendency to blame oneself for the event
(Crain, 2011). With this, Piaget believed that children learn through pretend play but still struggle
with logic and taking the point of view of other people (Cherry, 2016). Piaget theory and its
concepts is applicable to this study because thru this theory, the researcher was able to develop play
activities which involves cognitive, affective, and psychomotor to enchance the childrens' potential

Theories
The development theory chosen was Erik Erikson psychosocial development. The focus was on two
of the eight stages, which includes adolescents (12 to 18 years) – identity vs. identity diffusion, and
young adults (18 to 35 years) – intimacy vs. isolation. According to Papalia, Feldman, & Martorell
(2012), Erik Erikson stated that during the identity vs. identity diffusion stage, the adolescent must
determine own sense of self. Development at this point in life depends on what a person does. On
the other hand, young adults seek to make commitment to others during the intimacy vs. isolation
stage. This stage is where people tend to seek compassion and love. The group decided to use
Erikson 's theory as a guide in choosing the focus group because it seems that this is the stage where
individuals are more acceptable to new knowledge and change.
In regards to the educational theory, the group chose the Health Belief Model. According to Orji,
Vassileva and Mandryk (2012), this theory focuses mainly on health determinants that are most
suitable for addressing problem behavior that have health consequences. Health belief model has six

According to Erikson, as human beings age, we go through eight different stages to mature.
Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, is a theory that describes stages in which a human

positive and a negative characteristic. The personality of an individual changes and develops over a

Erikson's theory has its critics, "the criticism resolves primarily around whether his eight stages
occur in their prescribed order for everyone or whether they can be experienced at different times
for different people (based at least in part on cultural norms)." Erikson's theory remains prominent
today in the study of human development. Many of Erikson's theories were influenced by

The Psychosocial Theory Of Human Development

  • 1. The Psychosocial Theory Of Human Development A third development theory that I will discuss is called the "Psychosocial Theory." The psychosocial developmental theory emerged from the work of psychologist Erik Erikson. Erikson argued that human development was influenced by social experiences that take place through eight stages. In fact, Erikson's theory was influenced by his experience in analyzing and studying of various types of people from various backgrounds and culture. Thus, Erikson believed that human life evolved through experiencing life crisis in each of the eight stages of development. Moreover, it is through the experiences of life crisis and their eventual resolution that allows individuals to continue to grow. According to Erikson, life crisis symbolized a time when vulnerability and possibilities were intertwined (Fiore, 2011). Erikson proposed that life crisis's was an opportunity where an individual was trying to achieve, while at the same time working towards creating a sense of self–eventually this process would lead to the work of self–development. Stage 1: Basic trust vs. Mistrust (birth to 2years, infancy, hope, maternal), Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and doubt (2–3 years old, early childhood, willpower, both parents or adults substitute), Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt (3–5, preschool, nursery school, purpose, parents, family friends), Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority (5–12, middle school, competence, school), Stage 5: Identity vs. Identity confusion (12–18, adolescence, fidelity, ... • 2. The Phychosocial Theory Of Erikson's Psychosocial Development Self–Analysis Every person is a unique individual. Each of us possesses characteristics and traits that may be influenced either by genetic, environmental factors or both. These two factors are constantly argued in the field of psychology. In my opinion as counselor, both perspectives have its respective strengths and weaknesses. It is important to a counselor like me, to have deeper knowledge about the different personality theories because it allows me to know myself more and understand the people around me especially the counselees who trust my ability. The Psychosocial Development Theory of Erik Erikson identifies eight stages that individual has to pass through from infancy to late adulthood stages. I remember when my sister asked me to look after my nephew who was at 5 months old. I was afraid to carry him the moment he cried because he looked so fragile. However, I remember what Erikson said about this stage that it is important to establish trust to the caregiver and provide the basic needs of the infant otherwise, the mistrust will be developed. The moment I carried my nephew and hand him a toy, he stopped crying and started to suck the toy. From the perspective of Jean Piaget, infants have neonatal schemas or innate ability even before they have more experience about the world. From there I understand clearly that babies have incredible reflexes which are untold to them and that make them wonderful. As I continually observe my nephew who appears to ... • 3. Erick Erickson's Theory Of Psychosocial Development Theory Erick Erickson (1950,1963) proposed to a psychoanalytic theory of psychosocial development comprising eight stages from infancy to adult with each stage a person will experience some sort of psychosocial experience that may have a negative or positive outcome for their personal development. The psychosocial have eight stages each stage are depending the age of the child. The stages are; trust vs mistrust this is the infancy stage at this stage the infant is uncertain about the world they live in to end the feeling of uncertainty the infant looks upon their primary care giver for stability, autonomy vs shame this is the early child hood stage children who complete this stage successfully leave feeling secure and confident in themselves while for those who do not are left with a sense of shame and doubt of self, initiative vs guilt play age children display curiosity about the world, and begin to assert their power and contract of the world through direct play and social interaction they also feel a sense of guilt when they take a negative initiative and are punished, industry vs inferiority the school age if a child is praised for doing their best and encouraged to finish task then industry may result, while the child who ant master their school work may think of themselves as a failure and feeling inferiority may arise, identity vs role confusion the adolescence stage this is the main stage and most important development task for adolescents are to constructer their own unique sense of identity and find the social environment where they can belong to and have meaningful relationship( Chen, Lay Wu, & Yao, 2007), intimacy vs isolation young adult, adults who successful in resolving the conflict of this stage are able to develop deep meaningful relationship with others while adults who struggles with this stage experience poor relationship ( Cherry, Gans), generative vs stagnation adulthood stage failing to achieve this stage they become stagnant and feel unproductive while success in it will lead to the feeling of virtue and care(McLeod), and lastly ego integrity vs despair maturity stage to be successful in this stage the person is ... • 4. How Is Freud And Erikson's Psychosocial Theory Of Development Introduction Understanding development and changes in children is an important part of teaching and upbringing children. Theories of Human Development give us ideas to refer to understand and apply the process of human development. "They can help us find sources of behavior and trends, and account for the path that individuals follow, whether these can be called paths of growth or lack of progress.' (Ayon, 2015) Different psychologists have contributed their theories which are helpful to understand important concepts and issues related to child development. Sigmund Freud's psychosexual theory and Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory are two important psychoanalytic theories that teacher's parents and other care takers need to go through if they are involved in educating and raising children. In this assignment I will try to compare and contrast Sigmund Freud's psychosexual theory of development and Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory of development. Freud's psychosexual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both theorists recognize the importance of the unconscious on development. They both assumed that developments take place through a series of stages in a person's life and applied similar age groups for the stages of development. Differences between Freud's psychosexual theory of development and Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory When we compare these two theories, there are many differences between these two theories. The first difference I have notice is the way they described the stages. Freud proposed five stages of development while Erikson proposed eight stages. Freud's psychosexual theory emphasizes the importance of basic needs and biological forces, but Erikson's psychosocial theory is mostly focused upon social and environmental factors. Erikson extended his theory into adulthood until death, while Freud's theory ends at an earlier stage of development. Comparison of Psychosexual and Psychosocial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory of Development Report The psychosocial theory of development was formulised by the German psychoanalyst Erik Erikson. His theory considers the impact of external factors, parents, and the society, on personality development from childhood to adulthood (Candida, 2010, p. 51). According to Erikson's theory, every person must pass through a series of eight interconnected stages (split into general age ranges) over their entire life cycle. In this assignment, I will discuss these eight stages of development and how Erikson's theory is similar to my own life. Furthermore, I will address how defining moments in the first stages influenced my adolescence and identity. The first of Erikson's eight stages of development is infancy (0 to 12 months). During this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this stage, teenagers feel they need to develop a sense of personal identity. Success in this leads to an ability to stay true to who they are, while failure results in role confusion and weak sense of their role in the world (AllPsych, 2009, ¶ 6). During the first part of my adolescence, I was extremely shy with a very low self–esteem. Even though I had moved schools since the last stage, I still felt as though I didn't fit in or have many true friends. I found it really tough to find my identity and went through the first three years depressed. I believe that it was the events that I experienced in the previous stage which influenced that person I was during the first few years of adolescence. It was only in the last couple years of high school when I became more confident in myself and who I was. I achieved a sense of identity by developing close relationships with the young adults at my church. The next stage of Erikson's theory is young adulthood (18 to 35 years). Once we enter into this stage we start to search for someone we can begin to share ourselves with more intimately. However, if this does not happen, isolation and distance from others may occur (AllPsych, 2009, ¶ 7). I am currently less than two months away from turning 18 and am therefore just entering into this stage of life. Currently, I am in a relationship with a guy from my young adults group at church named Daniel. We have dating for a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Comparison Of Attachment And Psychosocial Development Theory Not one theory is more important than the next, each theory holds importance and are commonly used to describe supported evidence acquired throughout the scientific method. A theory may possibly rationalize how one interacts with others, human behaviors, or even how one may respond to a specific stimuli. Social work practice models shows how social workers can carry out theories. The practice models provides social workers with a blue print of how to be of assistance to others based on supportive social work theory. (Simmons 2016) "While a theory explains why something happens, a practice model shows how to use a theory to create an image." (Simmons 2016) The two social work human behavior theories I chose to talk about today is the Attachment theory and psychosocial development theory. I though these two theories would be the best to talk about because, they has always been of interest to me. Attachment theory is a state of having a strong emotional and physical attachment to at least one primary caregiver. This theory also attempts to explain the changing aspects long term and short term interaction between individuals. • 7. Erik Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development Erik Erikson was a German born, American developmental psychologist. He is known best for his theory of psychosocial development, and creating the phrase "identity crisis". He practiced after Freud, adopting some and disagreeing with some of his theories. Erikson continued the theory of the id, ego, and superego. However, unlike Freud, Erikson believed that personality development cannot be explained or identified solely based on sexuality. He believed that society and culture also influence psychosocial development. According to Erikson, we are innately born with certain personality traits and, then our environment and upbringing continue to mold us. Each stage of development builds upon the previous and makes the way for the stages to come. Each stage would have a "crisis" or a developmental hurdle to jump, but it is our ego's job to find a solution to further development. In his theory there are eight stages. The outcome for each stage does not have to be permanent, and can be changed by what we may experience in future stages of life. The first stage of Erikson's developmental theory is trust vs. mistrust. This stage covers the entire first year of life. During this stage, the most fundamental principle of life "trust" is formed. While this bond is typically formed parentally during this year, psychologically wise it goes far beyond that. The child having this trust allows them to form the basis for a sense of identity, otherwise mistrust brings with it a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. American Beauty And Erikson's Theory On Psychosocial... THe film AMerican Beauty was reviewed to help explain Erik Erikson's theory on psychosocial development. The psychosocial developmental theory consists of eight stages that humans go through from infancy up unto a mature adult over 60. While watching American Beauty several stages of psychosocial development were portrayed. The biggest takeaway from this movie showed that one may fail in order to overcome Erikson's psychosocial development. The stage that was most observed was the identity vs role confusion, during this stage according to our textbook "Adolescents ask themselves "Who am I?" They establish sexual, political, religious, and vocational identities or are confused about their roles." (Berger, 2017 Table 2.1) Upon reviewing American Beauty I will include examples of the different types of behaviors demonstrated that reflect a particular stage of development or crisis in their life. American Beauty and Psychosocial Development Erik Erikson developed the psychosocial development theory that consists of eight stages. American Beauty and Psychosocial Development Erikson focused on the various stages of personality development throughout the entire lifespan. "Erikson maintained that personality develops in a predetermined order, builds upon each previous stage." (McLeod, 2013) The eight stages begin at birth up and expand into maturity which is 65 years old and older. Erikson felt that a crisis occurs at each stage of development and he focuses a lot on the adolescent period. As a person moves on through life and completes each stage successfully it generally results in a healthy and happy person, failure to accomplish basic virtues throughout the stages generally results to an unhappy person and a negative sense of self. There is always ways to go back in the stages and resolve them later on in life. Throughout the movie American Beauty (Mendes, Ball, Cohen, Spacey, Bening, and Birch) there were examples of several stages of psychosocial development. In the very beginning of the movie one of the main characters Lester is giving a brief introduction to his life. He states how he feels dead inside and that basically he's unhappy with his life. • 9. Analyzing Erikson's Psychosocial Development Theory Erikson was a theorist who focused on his theory for psychosocial development. The article Psychosocial Identity Development Theories, highlights the keys points and idea of Erikson's psychosocial theory. Erikson was very focused on the idea of ego identity and obtaining full potential. His theory or "model" stats that, "identity formation is based on overcoming conflicts that individuals encounter during adolescent and early childhood."(Karkouti, 2014, p.257) He believed that all people must endure certain conflicts in their lives, and then overcome them in order to obtain their ego identity. The idea of psychosocial development is focused on social conflicts, and environmental factors. In the psychosocial model that Erikson created, it places people into eight stages. In order for someone to move on to the next stage, they must first overcome the conflict presented to them in the stage that they are in. A well–established identity will get stronger the more that conflict is successfully resolved. The eight stages are basic trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative verses guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity versus identity diffusion, intimacy versus isolation, generativity versus stagnation, and ego integrity versus despair. In this article, it not only focuses on the main idea for psychosocial development, but it continues by then saying that the theory has two criticisms, "stages are descriptive and they are difficult to be empirically ... • 10. Stages Of Psychosocial Theory: Trust Vs. Mistrust Psychosocial Stage 1 – Trust vs. Mistrust The first stage of Erikson's theory of psychosocial development take place between birth and one year of age and is the most important stage in life. As an infant is very much dependent, the development of trust is constructed on the dependability and quality of the child's caregivers. At this time in development, the child is totally depending upon adult caregiver for everything such as food, love, safety, nurturing, and everything. If a child positively develops trust, he or she will feel safe and secure in the world. But, if a caregiver neglects or fails to provide adequate care and love, the child will come to the sense that he or she cannot trust or rely upon the adults in his or her life. Failure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shame and Doubt The second stage of Erikson's theory of psychosocial development happens during early childhood and is centred on children developing a greater common sense of personal control. At this stage of development, children begin to gain a little bit of independence. They are beginning to carry out basic actions on their own and coming up with simple decisions about what they prefer. By giving chances for children to make choices and gain control, caregivers can help children cultivate a sense of autonomy. Like Freud, Erikson assumed that toilet training was an important part of this process. Yet, Erikson's way of thinking was rather different than Freud's. Erikson believed that ability to control one's bodily functions indicates to a feeling of control and a sense of independence. Other significant events involve gaining control over food choices and clothing selection. Children who do well to complete this stage will feel secure and confident, whereas those who do not are left with a sense of inadequacy, shame and self–doubt. Erikson believed that reaching a balance between both autonomy and shame and doubt would develop the virtue of will, which is the belief that children can act with intention, within reason and ... • 11. Erik Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory Essay Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory states that we go through 8 developmental stages in life. Erikson states that these stages are necessary in the progression and development of human growth from infancy into adulthood. Each developmental stage presents a crisis that must be resolved during that stage for a healthy development. Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory outlines that we develop in psychosocial stages instead of psychosexual ones. I agree with Erikson because one might not get through the entire crisis within the stages which causes one not understanding themselves and their identity , the eight stages are a great way to explain the developmental stages that occurs throughout our life span. Erikson's theory considers children development in terms of their potential to nurture and simplify healthful emotional and psychological feature progress. Erikson concluded that children should not rush their development. He perceived eight unique phases of development, which were trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame & doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation and integrity vs. despair (Cherry, 2011). Each developmental section is major and must be allowed time to completely unfold. Erikson recounted that a baby's development have to be compelled to not be rushed or an horrible emotional injury may be widespread and damage will be seriously challenge as a baby's potential to understand its ... • 12. Erikson 's Psychosocial Development Theory Essay In this research project several individuals, both parents and children were surveyed and asked various questions to see what their views on morals and values were and if teaching them had an impactful effect on children. With the secondary research conducted the teachings of morals and values will be linked to socialization as well as being looked at through different developmental theories. Many pages in the Individuals and Families, Diverse Perspectives (Holloway, Holloway & Witte, 2010) will be used to help relate the primary research to the secondary research of this project. The ways of socializing children will be mentioned as well as the concept of teaching morals and values to children and how it can be explained through different developmental theories. Teaching morals and values to children can be explained through many developmental perspectives but can better be explained through Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Development theory as well as Symbolic Interactionism. Erikson's Psychosocial Development theory looks at, "predictable stages of human development from childhood to adulthood," (Holloway et al., 2010, p.101). Psychosocial Development assumes that, "There is a depicted series of eight stages in which an individual's identity emerges and matures" (Holloway et al., 2010, p.100). Whereas Symbolic Interactionism explains, "How individuals behave based on their perceptions of themselves and others," (Holloway et al., 2010, p.39). It also describes that, ... • 13. Erik Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development Introduction This paper will discuss one of the most popular and influential theories in developmental psychology, which is Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development. It is a very interesting theory, and although it was influenced by Sigmund Freud, it centers more on the social component rather than the psychosexual stand of Freud. According to Erikson, our personal development occurs as we interact daily with others and have new experiences that shape us throughout our lives. This paper will review the eight stages of the psychosocial theory: 1. Trust vs. Mistrust 2. Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt 3. Initiative vs. Guilt 4. Industry vs. Inferiority 5. Identity vs. Identity Confusion 6. Intimacy vs. Isolation 7. Generativity vs. Stagnation 8. Integrity vs. Despair This paper will also discuss the contributions and impact of this theory as well as any criticisms it has received. Erik Erikson's Biography Erik Erikson was born on June 15, 1902, in Frankfurt, Germany, of Danish parents. He was raised by his stepfather and mother, and it wasn't until his adolescent years that he discovered the truth about his parentage, which motivated him to learn more about understanding one's identity. In the late 1920's he studied the theories of Sigmund Freud at the Psychoanalytic Institute in Vienna, where he developed and named his own theories as psychosocial development. • 14. Erik Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Development Psychoanalyst Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development explains how the human identity develops and evolves in eight stages from birth to death. Each one occurs in a predetermined order; the current stage builds upon the previous one and lays the groundwork for future stages (Wikimedia). Each stage has a specific "crisis" or conflict, a turning point in the individual's life which must be reconciled before moving on to the next. If the conflict is handled well, the individual gains "ego strength" in the form of a corresponding virtue. If the conflict is handled poorly, the individual not only fails to develop that virtue, but his/her ability to complete later stages is hindered resulting in diminished "ego quality" or ... Even while surrounded by friends and family trying to console me, I had never felt more alone. I was surprised when their sympathy turned into impatience. When it took more than a few weeks for me to "get over it," I was labeled a complainer. • 15. Erik Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory Of Development Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Theory of Development Erik Erikson, a German psychologist of the early 1900s, is most known for his theory on psychosocial development in humans. He was heavily influenced by his work with Anna Freud and her father, Sigmund Freud. However, in his research, he put emphasis on the cultural and social impact on identity development and studying the ego, which he believed developed with successful crisis resolving throughout life ("Erikson's Stages", 2007). He proposed the life–long model of development, consisting of eight stages. Erikson assumes that in every stage of development, there is a crisis that the individual must overcome despite the conflict of their psychological needs and the needs of society (McLeod, 2008, ¶9). With achievement of the basic virtue associated with each stage, the individual can move forward with their development. The conflict between the ego and societal experiences, Erikson coined as an "identity crisis" ("Identity Formation", 2015, ¶2) The ultimate idea with the stages of development is that these struggles must be overcome by individuals in order to find their sense of identity and self–knowledge. His theory heavily influences education, however not like many would expect. His research lies in helping people understand the importance in a positive relationship between students and teachers. Erik Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory Erik Erikson 's psychosocial theory and Sigmund Freud 's psychosexual theory are two well–known theories of personality development with various similarities and differences. While Erikson was influenced by Freud 's ideas, his theory differed in a number of important ways and was ultimately created to be an improvement to Freud's personality development theory (Friedman & Schustack, 2012). Like Freud's psychosexual theory, Erikson agreed that personality progresses in a sequence of predetermined phases. However, unlike Freud's theory of psychosexual stages, Erikson's theory describes the impact of social experience across the whole lifespan (Hoare, 2005). According to Freud's psychosexual theory, personality develops across 5 sexual stages while Erikson's develops among 8 social stages. Freud's theory has fewer stages due to his belief that the last stage of identity develops during adolescence, while Erikson's theory had more stages because he believed an individual's identity continually evolved over their entire lifetime (Hoare, 2005). The 5 stages of Freud's theory: Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency and Genital, will be discussed, compared and contrasted with Erikson's 8 stages: Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Doubt, Initiative vs. Guilt, Industry vs. Inferiority, Identity vs. Role Confusion, Intimacy vs. Isolation, Generativity vs. Stagnation, and Integrity vs. Despair (Passer, Smith, Atkinson, Mitchell & Muir, 2011). • 17. Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory And Psychosocial Development Theories and Theorists Theories are the building blocks of psychology. Theories whether old or new has allowed us to know what we know now. There are many theories in the field of psychology or educational psychology that are important to further understand human behavior. However, this paper will focus on only two theories which are; Erikson's psychosocial theory and Alfred Adler's Adlerian theory. Erik Erikson's psychosocial development has always been a great contribution to the field of psychology by Erik Erikson (Berk, 2007). Erikson suggested that everyone experiences a series of psychosocial stages instead of psychosexual stages as proposed by Sigmund Freud. Despite the fact that Erikson disagreed with Sigmund Freud in so many areas in his psychosexual theory, it was actually Freud's psychosexual theory that helped Erikson formulate his own psychosocial theory and Erikson was very much influenced by Sigmund and his work (Erikson, 1968). So even if Erikson disagreed with Freud, Sigmund actually contributed to Erikson's psychosocial theory because if it wasn't for Freud's shortcomings in his psychosexual theory, Erikson would not have come up with his own psychosocial theory (Erikson, 1968). Freud and Erikson hold opposite views on many things. However, they did agree on a few things to like how they both believed that personality develops in a series of set stages. • 18. Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development When I was in high school, I used to babysit. After each job, I'd not only leave a little richer, I also left with some pretty funny stories. The kids always had some pretty interesting information to share with me. I had one tell me that he could talk to horses, and had another that was convinced that the tooth fairy lived in his closet. Although I find it funny now, when I was their age, I probably had some pretty crazy thoughts myself. This is account to the different stage we go through during our psychosocial development. In Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, we go through eight distinctive stages each with a crisis we must overcome. With successful completion of each stage resulting in a healthy personality and the acquisition of basic virtues. These stages include Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt, Initiative vs. Guilt, Industry (competence) vs. Inferiority, Identity vs. Role Confusion, Intimacy vs. Isolation, Generativity vs. Stagnation, and Ego Integrity vs. Despair. The first stage we go through in trust mistrust. Infants are in this stage from birth to about 18 months. During this stage, they are basically questioning if the world is safe and if we can tryst it. To resolving their uncertainty, they will look towards their parents or primary care giver. If the infant receives a lot of consistent, predictable and reliable care, they will be able to develop trust that will carry over to their future relationships. If they find success in ... • 19. Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory Of Development Essay In this Individual Theory Paper, I decided to write about Erikson's Psychosocial Theory of Development. Erik Erikson is greatly influenced by Freud but instead of concentrating on psychosexual stages, Erikson choose to focus more on the individual's psychosocial stages as well as their personality development. Psychosocial theory can be defined as a study about human development as an outcome of the interaction in which involves the psychological or the needs of an individual, and the expectations from their society (Merriam–Webster, 2016). Freud's stage theory was too specifically focused on an individual's body zones, and he also vaguely discussed about the interaction between children and their significant others wherein Erikson was trying to elaborate by introducing some comprehensible concepts stage by stage in his theory (Crain, 2011). In Erikson's theory, he tend to highlight the role of society as well as the conflict that can occur, and this made Erikson an 'ego' psychologist. An assumption was made that every stage is faced with different conflicts and if the individual fail to resolve it at that time, it will be dragged into their next stages of life. Thus, Erikson suggested a lifespan model of development for his theory that is set well in eight stages. The first stage is the most important development stage and it looks into the individual's basic trust versus mistrust. This happens during an individual's infancy period whereby the infant is still uncertain of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This theory is observed in my life development from ages 0 to 19, which is then analyzed to the psychosocial identity I have developed today. This age is the stage of trust versus mistrust crisis, whereby one's basic needs are met by the caregiver reliably helps to develop one's trust (as cited in Karkouti, 2014). Unlike other theorists of his time Erikson's theory focused on human development across the lifespan from birth to late adulthood. Erikson believed that development change occurs throughout our lives in eight distinctive stages that emerge in a fixed pattern and are similar for all people. Erikson argued that each stage presents a crisis or conflict which results in either a positive or negative outcome (Feldman p.16). In this essay I will identify incidents in my own life that demonstrate each stage of development according to Erikson that I have lived through. I will also interview my Aunt Tami, who will share her experiences for the remainder of the stages of Erikson's development that I have not gone through thus far. Erikson's first stage of development is the Trust versus Mistrust stage that occurs from birth till 18 months of life. According to Erikson this is the period in which infants develop a sense of trust or mistrust, depending largely on how well their caregivers meet their needs (Feldman p. 187). During this stage of my life I was being taken care of by both Mom and Dad, but primarily by Mom. My Mom was a stay at home parent while my Dad worked. Erikson's stage, "Intimacy vs. Isolation" is discussing how adults either want to be with and around with others or become isolated and reject others company. This stage provides some insight into the rejection or acceptance of the children of the abused. Most of the time the children of the abused do not get the attention they need due to the intimacy issues of their parents (Ehrensaft et al., 2015, p. 16). Erikson's stage "Trust vs. Mistrust" can go along with this point as well. If the parent is neglecting the child, the child will not get what it needs from the parent. Therefore, the child will have a problem trusting others later on in their lifetime (Ehrensaft et al., 2015, p. 17). Another one of Erikson's stages, "Generativity vs. Stagnation" is discussing how adults either want to contribute to their children meaningfully or not at all. Most of the children in this study get no positive contribution from their parents. Erikson's stage "Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt", can help better understand this point. If the child does not learn the necessary skills required to do certain and basic things, they may begin to doubt their own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Freud 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development The lifespan perspective is crucial for understanding human development. There are many different perspectives on the lifespan and the lifespan has been broken down in many different ways. A variety of scholars and theorists have proposed unique perspectives on lifespan. Sigmund Freud's theory of psychosocial development considered five lifespan stages; oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital (Rathus, 2014). Erik Erikson expanded Freud's theory with a psychosocial perspective on development and considered the lifespan to consist of eight stages. He viewed and labeled these stages in terms of crises that individuals are faced with at each stage in their life. This is an important perspective because it indicates that all aspects of our lives are related and that the person we are today is a direct result of what we experienced earlier in our lives. Other sources view the lifespan as having nine stages broken into numeric age categories (Annenberg Foundation, 2015). From a leisure perspective, five lifespan stages are considered (Godbey, 2008). These lifespan perspectives exclude the prenatal stage. From an overall human development viewpoint, I think it is important to include the prenatal stage and I would break the lifespan down into the same eight stages identified by Rathus (2014). In Rathus' (2014) text, eight lifespan stages are identified; prenatal, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late ... The Psychosocial Theory Of Life Span Development Developmental Analysis Melissa Snyder Liberty University Abstract Life span development, and ultimately who we are and become as a person, is influenced by many different things that include biologic, cognitive, and socio–emotional factors. These different areas of development can be positively or negatively affected by environmental factors and stressors. If those negative environmental factors are not dealt with by the time a person reaches adulthood, there is a likelihood that the person will develop dysfunctional personalities and struggle to maintain healthy relationships. According to Eric Erickson, those positive and negative environmental factors influence the individual 's development differently when it is experienced during a particular stage of development. Erickson 's psychosocial theory of development asserts that there are eight stages of development that each person passes through over the course of their life. Each stage has a specific goal that can be attained by resolving particular conflicts. This conflict resolution will result in a healthy, well balanced individual. This paper will look at each stage of Erickson 's psychosocial theory of life span development and how it applies to my own development. Erik Erikson 's theory of psychosocial development is one of the best–known theories of personality in psychology. Much like Sigmund Freud, Erikson believed that personality develops in a series of stages. Unlike Freud 's theory of psychosexual stages, Erikson 's theory describes the impact of social experience across the whole lifespan. One of the main elements of Erikson 's psychosocial stage theory is the development of ego identity. Ego identity is the conscious sense of self that we develop through social interaction. According to Erikson, our ego identity is constantly changing due to new experiences and information we acquire in our daily interactions with others. As we face each new stage of development, we face a new challenge that can help further develop or hinder the development of identity. When psychologists talk about identity, they are referring to all of the beliefs, ideals, and values that help shape and guide a person 's behavior. The formation of identity is something that begins in childhood and becomes particularly important during adolescence, but Erikson believed that it is a process that CONTINUES throughout life. • 30. Erik Erikson 's Psychosocial Theory Essay There are many methods for studying human social development. In Erik Erikson's psychosocial theory, social interactions are an important and determining factor of lifespan development. Although Erikson was influenced by many of Sigmund Freud's studies, his studies were based upon psychosocial development versus psychosexual development. Erikson, like Freud, emphasized the importance of childhood on personality development, but unlike Freud, he believed that development occurred across the entire lifespan. Erikson thought personality developed through a series of eight stages each signified by a "crisis". According to Erikson, if the individual successfully overcomes the situation it helps to develop a lifelong skillset, but if the crisis is not successfully resolved it may hinder development. The sense of competence or the sense of inadequacy at each stage ultimately develops an individual's identity or "all of the beliefs, ideals, and values that shape and guide a person's behavior (Cherry)." By examining my own social development through life and gathering information from my parents, specifically about my childhood, I made many comparisons to and connections to my own identity. Erikson 's Theory Of Psychosocial Development Essay Growing up experiencing his own identity crisis and misfortunes during his childhood, Erik Homberger Erikson, a well–known psychologist, used this as an inspiration to further one's understanding of a healthy personality and sense of self. This gave rise to his successful establishment of the theory of Psychosocial Development. Although derived from Sigmund Freud's theory of Psychosexual Development, Erickson believed that a person's social experiences cause a great impact on their sense of identity throughout their entire lifespan in eight different stages of development, as opposed to the five stages Freud assumed ended when a person reaches early adulthood (Cherry. 2016). Erickson theorized that a person's ability to successfully complete a stage of development, regardless of their developmental challenges, directly affected the outcome of a healthy or unhealthy personality and sense of self. In his attempt to exceed further in understanding how a person's social environment affects their personality and identity, Erikson's findings became great contributions to the study of psychology. On June 15, 1902, Erikson was born in Frankfurt, Germany, to Karla Abrahamsen, a Jewish stockbroker, as Erik Salomonsen at birth (GoodTherapy. 2007–16). Erikson has a developmental process that explains the development between infancy to adulthood. He explains this within 8 stages; during these stages the individual experiences crisis which could have a positive or a negative outcome on the person's personality. Erikson is known as an ego psychologist focusing on culture and society and the conflicts that can take place with someone's ego (McLeod, S). This is the stage where newborns and infants long for the affection of their maternal needs and touch. My parents and I were talking about how I was when I was a newborn until my early childhood. I asked them whether I was breastfed or by bottle, they told me that I was fed by bottle because my mom didn't really like the feeling of breastfeeding. I had to adapt to the situation of not having my mom's touch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Erikson mentioned that "intimacy involves more than sexual intimacy. It is the ability for an individual to share oneself with another person of either sex without fear of losing personal identity" (Dunn & Craig, 2013, p.14). This stage is usually from between 18 to 40 years old. This is the stage where I am currently on right now. I'm still trying to find different similarities with other friends of mine. I've had relationships before but it was all short term relationships. I've never had a long term relationship or any real intimate relationship due to the fact that I've never found the right person yet. • 37. Psychosocial Theory And Erikson's Pychosocial Development... Psychosocial Development Theory Erik Erikson postulated eight psychosocial stages, an innovation to the five stages of development of Dr. Sigmund Freud. Each of the psychosocial stages are present at birth but only begin to unfold according to the childrens' ecological and cultural upbringing. Each stage is marked by a psychosocial crisis that needs to be resolved so that the individual can move to the next stage of development (Heffner, 2014). The developmental task for the preschoolers in this theory is to achieve a sense of initiative and overcome sense of guilt. Erikson believed that children in this stage begin to plan activitites, make up games, and initiative activities with others. In this theory, parents and other care takers take ... He developed a stage theory of intellectual development that includes four distinct stages: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage and formal operational stage. In his stages especially the second stage which is the preoperational, the child rises above simple sensory experiences. Words can be used as symbolic representations of objects and events. Children in the preoperational stage can be egocentric. They cannot distinguish between themselves in the place of others. At this stage, the child does not seem to be capable of certain logical operations and the child thinks that more things are alive than an older child or adult would. Further, because the child is egocentric, there is a tendency to blame oneself for the event (Crain, 2011). With this, Piaget believed that children learn through pretend play but still struggle with logic and taking the point of view of other people (Cherry, 2016). Piaget theory and its concepts is applicable to this study because thru this theory, the researcher was able to develop play activities which involves cognitive, affective, and psychomotor to enchance the childrens' potential and improve their ... • 38. The Development Theory : Erik Erikson Psychosocial... Planning The process that was required from the group members to complete the Alhambra community intervention project includes our group norms and rules, meeting breakdowns, and our roles, responsibilities and contribution in this project shown in Appendix B. Theories The development theory chosen was Erik Erikson psychosocial development. The focus was on two of the eight stages, which includes adolescents (12 to 18 years) – identity vs. identity diffusion, and young adults (18 to 35 years) – intimacy vs. isolation. According to Papalia, Feldman, & Martorell (2012), Erik Erikson stated that during the identity vs. identity diffusion stage, the adolescent must determine own sense of self. Development at this point in life depends on what a person does. On the other hand, young adults seek to make commitment to others during the intimacy vs. isolation stage. This stage is where people tend to seek compassion and love. The group decided to use Erikson 's theory as a guide in choosing the focus group because it seems that this is the stage where individuals are more acceptable to new knowledge and change. In regards to the educational theory, the group chose the Health Belief Model. According to Orji, Vassileva and Mandryk (2012), this theory focuses mainly on health determinants that are most suitable for addressing problem behavior that have health consequences. Health belief model has six variables: a) perceived susceptibility (perceived risk and concern for contracting the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, is a theory that describes stages in which a human being should pass as he or she are going through life. Erik describes each of the stages to have a positive and a negative characteristic. The personality of an individual changes and develops over a lifetime and these charges may either help or hold one back from attaining their objectives. While Erikson's theory has its critics, "the criticism resolves primarily around whether his eight stages occur in their prescribed order for everyone or whether they can be experienced at different times for different people (based at least in part on cultural norms)." Erikson's theory remains prominent today in the study of human development. Many of Erikson's theories were influenced by psychoanalyst, Freud's work, and Erikson's theory centered on development.
