Assessment Task Instructions for Students
In the 1st year workshop, you will be undertakingthe following 2 tasks.
Station 1 – The Tin Snip Practical.
Station 2 – The Rotary Hammer Drill Practical.
You are required to:
Plan and Prepare for these tasks
Select, check, and use the correcttools and equipment
Clean up at the end includingtools cleaned and packed up.
Assessment range and conditions:
 This is an individual assessment.
 This assessmentwill becompleted duringyour normal classtime.
 You must complete the Job Safety Analysis prior to beginningthis assessment.
 You must complete the Toolbox Talk prior to beginningthis assessment.
 You must have fully completed the Hand Tool Induction with your teacher.
 You must have fully completed the Power Tool Induction with your teacher.
Materials provided: Assessment paper, all tools,equipment, and materials will bemade availablefor each student.
Materials you may need: Full PPE, and a devise to access Ready Skills
Information for students: You may have two (2) attempts for this assessment.
 If your first attempt is notsuccessful,your teacher will discuss your results with you and will arrangea second
attempt.
 If your second attempt is not successful,you may be required to re-enrol in this unit.
Work Order 1: The Tin Snip Practical.
Instructions:
UsingLeft/Right and straightcuttingtin snips,cuta shapeout of sheet metal material.
1. Refer to your set of plans & drawings for details of:
 Sheet metal size.
 Circle- cut out dimensions.
 Cutting configuration.
2. Ensure you are prepared for your practical,you will need the following:
 Marker pen.
 Circlemarkingtemplate.

 Combo square.
 Tin snips –left, right and straight cutting tin snips.
 Steel or foldingruler.
3. Lay your rectangle sheet metal flaton your work bench.
Usingyour combination square,measure and draw Centre lines acrossthe faceof your material.Draw one
vertical and one horizontal line,usingyour circletemplate position template using Centre lines and drawaround
template.
4. Usingtin snips:
Start with right-handed tin snips,cutin an anti-clockwisedirection halfway around thecircle.
Then use Left-handed tin snips,cutin a clockwisedirection,and complete the circle cut.
Followingyour vertical and horizontal lines you previously drewon your circle,cuta quarter out of your circle
with your straightcuttingtin snips.
NOTES:
Take all carenecessary with any sharp edges, round them off with some sandpaper to avoid any cuts and
abrasions.
Disposeor recycleany metal sheeting and ask your Teacher/Assessor for directive!
Ask your Teacher/Assessor for metal shape placement and you areready for assessment.
After successful completion captureyour evidence and load into drop box.

Work order 2: Rotary Hammer Drill
Instructions:
You will be required to drill some holes in masonry using a rotary hammer drill.
Once you get the feel of the tool you will then be required to select a masonry wall plug, select the
correct drill bit to suite that style plug and install it.
1. Watch and Learn
Watch the video “rotary hammer”, participate in the class demonstration
2. Select your tools and equipment
Identify and select your rotary hammer drill and masonry drill bit to be used.
3. Fully check your equipment for serviceability and any faults
Follow standard procedure for reporting faulty tools & equipment issues.
4. Drill basic holes
Your Teacher/Assessor will direct you to the Brick, Block or concrete wall where you will
perform this task.
5. Install a masonry plug
You will identify the thickness gauge of a plastic wall plug. Choose the right gauge masonry
drill bit that suits, drill and insert the plug correctly
NOTES:
Follow all safe operating procedures and wear PPE
Dispose or recycle any left-over materials, ask your Teacher/Assessor for directive!
Ensure the holes are drilled deep enough for your plugs
After successful completion capture your evidence and load into drop box.

Assessment range and conditions:  This is an individual assessment.  This assessmentwill becompleted duringyour normal classtime.  You must complete the Job Safety Analysis prior to beginningthis assessment.  You must complete the Toolbox Talk prior to beginningthis assessment.  You must have fully completed the Hand Tool Induction with your teacher.  You must have fully completed the Power Tool Induction with your teacher. Lay your rectangle sheet metal flaton your work bench. Usingyour combination square,measure and draw Centre lines acrossthe faceof your material.Draw one vertical and one horizontal line,usingyour circletemplate position template using Centre lines and drawaround template. 4. Usingtin snips: Start with right-handed tin snips,cutin an anti-clockwisedirection halfway around thecircle. Then use Left-handed tin snips,cutin a clockwisedirection,and complete the circle cut. Followingyour vertical and horizontal lines you previously drewon your circle,cuta quarter out of your circle with your straightcuttingtin snips. NOTES: Take all carenecessary with any sharp edges, round them off with some sandpaper to avoid any cuts and abrasions. Once you get the feel of the tool you will then be required to select a masonry wall plug, select the correct drill bit to suite that style plug and install it. 1. Watch and Learn Watch the video “rotary hammer”, participate in the class demonstration 2. Select your tools and equipment Identify and select your rotary hammer drill and masonry drill bit to be used. 3. Fully check your equipment for serviceability and any faults Follow standard procedure for reporting faulty tools & equipment issues. 4. Drill basic holes Your Teacher/Assessor will direct you to the Brick, Block or concrete wall where you will perform this task. 5. Install a masonry plug You will identify the thickness gauge of a plastic wall plug. Choose the right gauge masonry drill bit that suits, drill and insert the plug correctly NOTES: Follow all safe operating procedures and wear PPE Dispose or recycle any left-over materials, ask your Teacher/Assessor for directive! Ensure the holes are drilled deep enough for your plugs After successful completion capture your evidence and load into drop box.
