The document provides information about the Hometown News Release program, which takes service members' information and produces news stories that are marketed to local news agencies and family members. It lists examples of achievements and events that would warrant a news release, such as promotions, awards, deployments, and assuming command. Templates are available for common news release topics. The expectations of service members are to take and submit photos of training, write articles, contact staff with ideas/questions, and not directly release information to media. In return, staff will provide resources, editing support, and media training as needed.
2. Why a Hometown News Release?
The Hometown News Release program
takes the information provided and
produces a short story, then markets that
story to the news agencies in your
hometown areas and to those of your
family. This is done with the information
that you provide, so accuracy is extremely
important. It only takes a couple of minutes
to fill out the form so we can share the
Guard story with our local communities,
state and country.

• Remember: What we think is routine is cool to
civilians!
• “If your mother tells you she loves you, check it
out”
• Use language civilians understand (i.e.
operations, not G-3)
• Get out and get photos during drill weekend if
you can!
• If it is worth a picture, it is worth attention to
detail on the 5 Ws!
