Presentation:
The College Application Process
2. ā¢ Consider this saying: āIf you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.ā
ā¢ Your senior year, the college application process, the financial aid
process, senior prom, and graduation are finally here!
ā¢ It is time to gather important information and use your resources,
including:
ā Mrs. Maryssa Hestin, Counselor for Juniors & Seniors A ā Lio
ā Mrs. Deborah Davis, Counselor for Juniors & Seniors Lip ā Z
ā Dr. David Barkovich, Dean of Academic Affairs
ā Mrs. Daria White, Counseling Resource Center (CRC) Secretary
It really is āDecision Time.ā
3. ā¢ You are approaching a very important
crossroad in your journey through life.
ā¢ YOU have the ability to make your dreams
become a reality.
ā Consider what your personal goals are
and work towards them.
ā¢ Donāt let long term goals be influenced by
factors that wonāt be relevant for much
longer.
ā Consider what your personal interests
and strengths are and use them.
ā¢ Find a career that fits what YOU like to do
and are good at.
Choosing Your Own Destiny
4. Achieving Your Goals is a PROCESS.
When choosing and
preparing for different
career and college paths,
you may be required to
complete certain tasks as
part of a larger process.
Itās not going to happen all
at once, so gear up for the
paperwork and deadlines.
5. But how Do I Decide????
ā¢ Do you homework (career homework that isā¦)
ā Gather information via college visit to NH, college fairs,
visit locations, speak with your network, job shadowing,
websites such as www.bigfuture.collegeboard.org
ā¢ Do what best for you (not friends, etc.)
ā Take career tests at www.pacareerzone.org
ā Consider what classes at NH you like and why
ā Speak with your network frankly about what YOU want
to do
6. Get Organized
Keeping track of all of this information can be difficult.
ā¢ You are strongly encouraged to use and regularly
refer to the a checklist to assist you with this.
ā¢ Please make your parent/guardianās aware of this
checklist. Post it somewhere prominent
(refrigerator?) so that you are reminded to adhere
to deadlines.
7. After graduation, you will have several basic
options to consider (These all ābranch outā
a great deal!!!). There is not one path for
everyone, so be your own person.
ā¢ College/University
ā¢ Community college
ā¢ Vocational, technical, or career Training
ā¢ Armed services
ā¢ Work Force
Basic Post Secondary Choices
Hint: Waiting until June to
plan for this may not get
you the results you want!
8. College/Military
Representative Visits to NH
ā¢ Over 90 different schools and branches of the military visit the CRC
from September to November. Itās a great time for you to learn more
about a particular school. Sometimes the representative you meet is
a member of the schoolās admission committee!
ā¢ Listen to the announcements and check out the postings in the CRC,
in your classrooms, and online to find out when the college/military
representatives are visiting North Hills.
ā¢ You will need your teacherās approval to miss class for a
college/military representative visit. Passes can be obtained in the
CRC. Please do so BEFORE the time of the visit.
9. Local Fall College Fair
College fairs are another great opportunity for you to speak with
representatives about their institutions and gain āface timeā
with admission personnel.
North Pittsburgh College Fair:
October 3, 2016 6-8pm
La Roche College: Kerr Fitness Center
A $500 scholarship will be randomly awarded to a
North Hills senior who attends!

12. But how many places
do I apply to????
There is not set magic number you should apply to. Instead, you
may wish to consider applying to a variety of schools in this way:
ā āReachā Schools: You would love to be accepted, but itās
highly competitive. You seem to the qualifications thoughā¦
ā āReasonableā Schools: Youāre pretty sure you meet their
qualifications and should be accepted. Chance of
scholarships perhaps
ā āResponsibleā Schools: Your qualifications definitely match
what the schools state they are looking for. Chances of
scholarship increase as you look more awesome????
13. But what do I Need To Do?
ā¢ Define where you will be applying.
ā¢ Formulate a list of what each school requires to
complete their application process.
ā¢ Begin forwarding all requested information and
documents requested to the schools.
ā¢ Make note of deadlines!! Allow time for processing
and mailing!
14. Application Materials
There are several basic application materials that are standard and
most institutions will expect to receive:
ā Application (most often now completed and submitted online)
ā Application fee (sometimes waived if you apply by an early deadline or visit)
ā Official High School Transcript
ā SAT and/or ACT scores
There may be supplemental materials you will choose or be asked to
supply to increase your chances of being admitted:
ā Essay - Some schools provide/require a topic, other may allow you to choose
ā Letters of Recommendation, perhaps from a teacher, your boss, or counselor
ā Resume or list of extra-curricular activities, including any volunteer work
ā Awards or certificates of recognition
ā Examples of student work such as videos, websites, DVDs, or portfolios
Always know what schools require what materials!
15. Completing Applications
ā¢ STUDENTS should be filling out the applications.
ā¢ Paper applications/envelopes should be completed
in pen.
ā¢ Address envelopes and attach the correct postage.
ā¢ Many applications ask for comments from your
counselor. Please share a copy of your Letter of
Recommendation Information Forms with us too!
16. Electronic Applications
ā¢ Many institutions used the internet for college applications. Some
use no paper at all!
ā¢ Some ācommonā online group applications are:
ā www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org (90+ schools)
ā www.commonapp.org (450+ schools)
ā¢ You complete all materials online e and then your info can be
forwarded to multiple schools (determined by you) electronically.
ā¢ You will not need an envelope or postage. You will need to fill out
a Letter of Recommendation Form if you need a counselor
recommendation.
17. Requesting Your Transcript
ā¢ Visit the CRC or the Guidance Web page to obtain a Transcript
Request Form
ā¢ Submit each form along with an appropriately sized and fully
addressed envelope for the materials you wish to send along with
any additional materials such as an essay, letters of
recommendation, or other materials to all be mailed together.
ā¢ Appropriate postage must be secured to the envelope. More than
one stamp may be required for oversized envelopes or if you are
including additional items. Students may opt to provide $1.00 per
request to cover envelope and postage costs.
Over 1500 transcript requests are processed out of our office each
year! Because of this volume we require a minimum of five
school days for processing. Be aware of your deadlines and
plan accordingly!
19. Pre-Admissions Testing
ā¢ If you have not taken your SAT or ACT tests yet or wish to
retake them, pay attention to registration deadlines!
ā¢ SAT ā www.collegeboard.com

ā¢ ACT ā www.actstudent.org

20. Other Admission Testing
ā¢ ASVAB: Used for placement in the US military.
ā Seniors interested in the military will need to take this!
Can also be used as a career exploration test with no
obligation to enilist.
ā Let Dr. Barkovich know if you want to take the ASVAB at
NH on Wednesday Oct 19 right here at NH during
school.
ā¢ Union/trades testing: Entrance to certain programs
may require tests that assess math and English as
well as technical skills.
21. Score Reporting
ā¢ Your SAT and/or ACT scores DO NOT appear on
your transcript! However, please include our school
to receive your scores when registering: 393752
ā¢ All scores should be directly sent to the colleges
and universities of your choice directly from the
testing company.
ā¢ 4- 6 free at registration, fees charged after the fact.
ā¢ Score choice available for SAT & ACT
23. Letters of Recommendation
ā¢ Letters of recommendation from respected individuals that
know you may assist with your admittance to a college or
university. Consider asking a teacher, your boss, or a
counselor.
ā¢ Letter of Recommendation Forms are located in the CRC or
can be obtained from your counselor. By completing these,
you provide the person who is writing the letter of
recommendation with specific and unique information about
yourself and your history/activities.
24. Representing Yourself Online
ā¢ It is not unusual for colleges to do a search for
you on Google, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
and other social media to learn more about
who you really are.
ā¢ Please be aware of how you are portrayed online
and make sure to represent yourself in a manner
that will not affect the possibility of your
acceptance.
25. Professional Presence
ā¢ Be sure that your email address will not hurt your
chances for admission. Many schools ask you to
provide this and you do not want a joke to cost you
admission. (Example: Indicating an email like
āsk8ergirlzrawesome@yahoo.comā may not send
the message that you are a mature young adult
who is serious about your studies.)
ā¢ Consider establishing an additional email address
for such correspondence. Ex. JDoe@gmail.com
