2. General Information Regarding Vegetable
Waste in Australia (2013, Rogers et al)
• Estimated 277,000 tonnes lost each year
• Approximately 25% of production
• Value of waste approximated $154.7 Million/PA
• Majority waste is due a failure of the crop to meet
strict retail quality standards.
• Otherwise edible product is usually (1) dumped, used
for (2) stock feed or (3) rotary hoed back into soil.
• This also means that huge amounts of the resources
used in food production are going in vain
• FAO have a target to reduce figure to at least 19%
