1. 1. Latin American FRUITS
Ecuadorian Rainforest, LLC.
2. 2. Latin American Agriculture
The Amazonian rainforest contains more plant and
animal species than any other place on the planet!
25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from
rainforest ingredients
More than half of the world's estimated 10 million
species of plants, animals and insects live in the tropical rainforests
At least 3000 fruits are found in the rainforests; of these
only 200 are now in use in the Western World. The
Indians of the rainforest use over 2,000.
Source: RainTree Nutrition The Healing Power of Rainforest Herbs Dr. LeslieTaylor
21. 21. CherimoyaAnnonacherimola
High blood cholesterol levels are consistently associated with higher risk of coronary heart disease, and other life-threatening cardiovascular and cerebro-vascular damage, including fatal strokes. In the present study methanolic extract of Annonacherimola was evaluated for its antihyperlipidemicpotential.
Acute hyperlipidemia was induced by single administration of Triton WR 1339 (Tyloxapol) intra-peritoneally. There was a significant dose dependent decrease in plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol at the same time considerable increase in HDL-cholesterol levels upon administration of methanolic extract at the dose of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/
kg. Fenofibrate was used as reference standard.
Atherogenicindex as well as LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio was lowered significantly in case of methanolic extract treated groups compared to normal control which reflects the antihyperlipidemic potential of Annonacherimola.
Source: "PharmacologicalScreening of Annonacherimola" forAntihyperlipidemicPotential"AdarshVermaM,AjayKumarP,RajaShekar K2,Kranthi Kumar A3,Chakrapani and Roja Rani
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. 33. 33. Guavapsidiumguajava
Guava (Psidiumguajava L.) is a tropical fruit, widely consumed fresh and also processed (beverages, syrup, ice cream, and jams). Pulp and peel fractions were tested, and both showed high content of dietary fiber (48.55−49.42%) and extractable polyphenols (2.62−7.79%).…..
All fractions tested showed a remarkable antioxidant capacity, and this activity was correlated with the corresponding total phenolic content. A 1-g (dry matter) portion of peel contained DPPH• activity, FRAP activity, and inhibition of copper-induced in vitro LDL oxidation, equivalent to 43 mg, 116 mg, and 176 mg of Trolox, respectively.
These results indicate that guava could be a suitable source of natural antioxidants. Peel and pulp could also be used to obtain antioxidant dietary fiber (AODF), a new item which combines in a single natural product the properties of dietary fiber and antioxidant compounds.
Source: Antonio Jiménez-Escrig, Mariela Rincón,‡ Raquel Pulido,† and Fulgencio Saura-Calixto†
Departamento de Metabolismo y Nutrición, Instituto del Frío, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Ciudad Universitaria, E 28040 Madrid, Spain and Unidad de Investigación de Alimentos, Facultad de Farmacia, Universidad Central de Venezuela, Caracas, Venezuela
43. 43. MameySapotePouteriasapota
Pouteriacampechiana, Pouteriasapota, and Pouteriaviridis are tropical plants in the Sapotaceae family that bear edible fruits. The fresh fruits of these three Pouteria species were each extracted, and activity-guided fractionations were performed to identify the antioxidant constituents. Seven polyphenolic antioxidants, gallic acid (1), (+)-gallocatechin (2), (+)-catechin (3), (-)-epicatechin (4), dihydromyricetin (5), (+)-catechin-3-O-gallate (6), and myricitrin (7), were isolated and identified. Extracts of the three Pouteria fruits were analyzed by a selected ion monitoring liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method to quantify their polyphenolic antioxidants.
The highest level of the seven measured polyphenols was found in P. sapota, the second highest in P. viridis, and the lowest in P. campechiana. The levels of the seven polyphenols corresponded with the results of the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay, by which P. sapota had the highest antioxidant activity, P. viridis the second highest, and P. campechiana the lowest.
Source: "Analysis of polyphenolic antioxidants from the fruits of three pouteria species by selected ion monitoring liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
Ma J, Yang H, Basile MJ, Kennelly EJ.
Source
Department of Biological Sciences, Lehman College, and The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, New York 10468, USA
(MIE) on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in rAIM:
RESULTS: The results demonstrated that MIE has anti-inflammatory properties by improvement of clinical signs, reduction of ulceration and reduced MPO activity when administered before DSS. In addition, administration of MIE for 14 d resulted in an increase in GSH and reduction of TBARS levels and iNOS, COX-2, TNF-α and TNF R-2 expression in colonic tissue, and a decrease in IL-6 and TNF-α serum levels.
CONCLUSION: MIE has anti-inflammatory activity in a DSS-induced rat colitis model and preventive administration (prior to DSS) seems to be a more effective protocol.
Source: "PAnti-inflammatory effects of Mangifera indica L. extract in a model of colitis.
Márquez L, Pérez-Nievas BG, Gárate I, García-Bueno B, Madrigal JL, Menchén L, Garrido G, Leza JC.
Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, University Complutense and Centro de Investigación en Red de Salud Mental (CIBERSAM), 28040 Madrid, Spain
61. 61. PapayaCarica Papaya L.
BACKGROUND: A transgenic papaya line (TPY10-4) that is resistant to both papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) and papaya leaf distortion mosaic virus (PLDMV) has been developed in Taiwan. This study investigated the immunomodulatory properties of transgenic TPY10-4 and its native (TCK) papaya fruits using an ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitised mouse model. Both green and ripe papaya fruits at low (0.2 g powder kg(-1) body weight (BW)) and high (1.6 g powder kg(-1) BW) doses were administered to experimental mice by intragastric gavage for 5 weeks. Changes in serum total immunoglobulin A (IgA), IgE, IgG and IgM levels, OVA-specific IgE, IgG1 and IgG2a titres and Th1/Th2 cytokine secretions using splenocytes were determined.
CONCLUSION: this study suggests that transgenic TPY10-4 papaya fruits do not increase the allergenic potential of OVA by oral administration but may have a protective immunity via increasing the serum total IgM level.
Source: Source: The impact of transgenic papaya (TPY10-4) fruit supplementation on immune responses in ovalbumin-sensitised mice.
Chen YN, Hwang WZ, Fang TJ, Cheng YH, Lin JY.
Source
Department of Food Science and Biotechnology, National Chung Hsing University, No. 250 Kuokuang Road, Taichung 40227, Taiwan
