1. Audience Theory
My music video will follow conventions for alternative videos. The age range I
will be trying to attract are teenagers, aged 15-19 years old. The genre of the
music will be indie/alternative and therefore will help to attract the audience. I
will be targeting both girls and boys, however I feel the genre is slightly geared
more towards girls, along with the natureof the video being slightly romantic,
therefore stereotypically be geared towards girls. In terms of race or social
class my video will not exclude nor target any specific type.
I will be using an alternative video to also attract a niche group of teens,
steering clear of the clean cut li syncing meaningless videos, and instead
portray that the song has a level of meaning and emotion within it. This should
help to attract the type of people I want viewing my video, as the narrative
style should initially draw in those with an understanding of genre music and
videos with a story.
The video will also be used to empathise with the teenage audiences, by
showing typical emotions of love and heartbreak. These should attract the
audience as many teenage TV programmes arecentred around the idea of
idealistic love, however my video will break this convention to show whata
realistic relationship is like, and therefore attract teenagers who “break the
image” of an idealistic world.
2. The hypodermic syringeis the theory that the
media is like a needle that injects its views to our
society. I will be challenging this model by breaking
the usualconventions of music videos. I believe
that the viewpoint of my video will show a
different view of relationships.
My audience due to their age and ideology are
unlikely to fall customto the hypodermic syringe
model, as they are vigilant about whatis real and
are likely to despisethe cookie cut view of reality
the media portrays.
My video won’tbe following postmodern theory, due to the genre of music
and tone of video narrativeany postmodern elements would not fit and would
take away fromthe general tone of video.
My intent of the video is to show a changeof typical media and producea
video which offers a stable storylinewithout the need for unrealistic over the
top storylines. This should help to attract the teenage alternative audience that
I am looking for, thosewho are“anti-establishment” and find no meaning in a
perfectly produced lip syncing video which bears no relation or imagery to the
story or the song.
The USP of my video will be the narrative story behind it, the tone and pace of
editing should also provide a unique part of the video. The video should be
used to make the audience feel levels of emotion and empathy for the
characters. Audiences get a realistic story out of my video.
