 Reconoce e identifica el uso de las situaciones irreales y de las palabras homófonas. 
2. ACTIVIDADES PARA DESARROLLAR 
UNREAL WISHES 
1. Read the theory and complete the sentences using WISHES. 
I WISH/IF ONLY 
´I wish´ expresses unreal past (subjunctive). There are different verbal structures to 
use it: 
a) I wish + subject + Simple Past expresses a regret about a present situation: - I wish you didn´t work too 
much = I´m sorry you work too much 
´Wish´ can be used in past without changing the meaning of the verb: - He wished he knew the address = He was 
sorry he didn´t know the address 
b) Wish + subject + Past Perfect express regret about a past situation: - She wishes she hadn´t said that = She is 
sorry because she said something 
Unpleasant 
c) Wish + subject + Would is similar to ´wish + simple Past´ but it´s only used with actions in which the 
subject can control it, a situation the subject could change if he wants: - I wish she wouldn´t sing in the bath = 
she sings in the bath and it disturbs me. 
2- Wish + subject + Would is normally used with inanimate subjects as to speak about the weather: 
Ex- I wish it would stop raining
1) Rewrite these sentences using ´I wish/If only´: 
1. I don´t know many people. 
2. I can´t give up smoking. 
3. I haven´t any cigarettes and I need one. 
4. George isn´t here. 
5. It´s cold and I hate this weather. 
6. I´m sorry because Tina can´t come to my party. 
7. I live in London and I don´t like the city. 
8. I have to work tomorrow and I´d like to stay in bed. 
9. My car is broken and I don´t know anything about cars. 10. It´s a pity that I´m not lying on a beautiful sunny 
beach. 
11. I should have travelled more when I was young. 
12. I would like to be able to afford a country house. 
13. I hate it when you drive fast in the city. 
14. It's a pity I didn't bring my camera with me
