This is a light design for a workshop named Wood and Grass Life Workshop, which was launched in Design of School, Hunan University.
The name of our series lambs is Yun Geng (云耕). “Yun” in Chinese means Cloud. As we all know, most of terraced fields are located in mountains, therefore, terraced fields are always surrounded by clouds in the early morning, which forms a variety of amazing scenery, as seen above. “Geng” in Chinese means cultivate, till, farming. When people refer to this word, maybe you will think of the hard-working farmers, who are cultivating in terraced fields. That’s source of our light name.

Terraced Fields
4. There was terraced fields since the Qin and Han dynasty ( 221BC-221AC )
in China. Rice planting requires large area of reservoir, which was not
enough in southern eastern China.
So in order to solve the rice problem, the farmers built this kind of terraced
fields. They use many layers of dams to keep the water and avoid the soil
erosion. It is very remarkable on water storage, soil conservation and
increasing production. Light and ventilation conditions of terraced fields is
better, is good to the growth and nutrient accumulation of crop. Terraced
fields make it possible to plant large-area crops, solving the local food
problem.

However, from the first
renderings we can see,
the shape of the lambs
are not natural, in the
other word, they still
doesn't look natural.
Terraced fields are
irregularly shaped, and
the line changes are very
rich. Therefore, we have
improved the shape of
the lambs on the base of
the previous scheme.

The Yungeng Light will refract light to exhibit color change and image refracting visual effect.
30. “(1) About the concept: At the beginning of our design process, we analyzed the key factors and local symbols for China and
came up with several design ideas, such as the terraced fields, chopsticks, Buddha, traditional grinding machine...But some
of them is just basic and immature. Then after the selection of ourselves and teachers, we decided to continue with the fields
concept.
(2) About the design process: After we have chosen the concept, we never changed. We focus on this and started to think
deeply about the material, shape and function. We compared different kinds of material and choose the most proper ones;
We changed the shape ever and ever again to find the beautiful shape which is both natural and modern; We tried different
functions like the ceiling light, floor light and the table light and even the separating light and then choose the best one.
(3) About the problems: We have met many kinds of problems.
1 How to control the weight. ------We use wood veneer instead of wood plates. We use supporting structure.
2 How to fix the inner light bulb and hold the whole structure.-----inner holding structure
3 How to make more light come out ( make it brighter)----Add gaps between the plates and make them transparent.
4 How to make it easier to change and fix if it’s broken----add arclic tube around the light, which can be easily replaced and
changed.
Never give up, persueing the best.”

31. “Our design began with the seeking of the imagery. At first we decided to do some light design
using the imagery of terraces, it took only little time for us to make that decision. Then we started
to sketch . In this part we encountered some troubles, it was difficult for us to find the best way to
express our ideas. In discussions with the two teachers,we made a lot modification in our
design, and finally we made up our mind to use the bark paper and acrylic to show the beauty of
the disarray hierarchy and the sense of permeability of the terraces when there was water in it.
Now we are preparing materials, we believe that our concept will bring about soon.”

32. “The several processes of solving problems have given me lots of great pointers,
such as how to make the shape more natural, although sometimes the constant
revision made me feel down. In fact, the constant revision is an essential part
of design process, isn't it?”
