Five-year-old Xian Lei enters kindergarten with little understanding of English. Ms. Sisco, her teacher, sees that Xian Lei has difficulty con- necting with much of what is going on in the classroom if it depends on English. The one time when she seems to brighten up is when Ms. Sisco tells nursery rhymes or reads traditional stories such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears. These are stories that Xian Lei has obviously heard in her own language. That’s when her teacher first hears her say some phrases in Eng- lish, such as “Bears eat” and “Goldilocks sleep,” in her play and as she draws pictures in her journal following story time. Xian Lei also seems eager to participate in the classroom activities that spin off from Ms. Sisco’s storytelling. M any US classrooms today have at least some children with limited abilities to understand and express themselves in English. Because language acquisition is highly social, there is reliable evidence that immersing young dual language learners (DLLs) in playful contexts that high- light language is far more effective than teach- ing isolated skills in resource rooms or through tutoring sessions (Freeman, Freeman, & Mer- curi 2004). Even so, during the initial stages, second language acquisition can be challeng- ing for young children and for the classroom teacher who must create high-quality learning experiences for everyone in the class. Case1 Mechanics from dealerships across the country attended a three day training session put on by the manufacturer. Given the number of trainees, it would have been too expensive to provide three automobiles for each mechanic to work on and it would be nearly impossible to �ind a facility large enough to do so. So the training was designed for the instructor to give instruction on the various systems and then to pose various problems that might occur. The trainees would then try to identify the symptoms that would result. For example, the problem might be given as “The car has a burned-out capacitor.” The trainees would then try to identify the symptoms that would appear (e.g., High current surge demands on the vehicle’s electrical systems can damage the electrical system, including the battery, alternator and voltage regulator.). The training covered a wide range of electrical problems and the mechanics rated the program highly as they left. When doing a follow-up evaluation, the training director was disappointed to learn that the dealerships reported that their mechanics showed no improvement in trouble shooting electrical problems. In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.

(2011). International Economics (13th ed.). Mason, OH: South-Western, Cengage Learning. ISBN 13: 9781439038949 ) might help you come up with ideas. second step: Select as a case study any global economic event or events currently or recently covered in the news media and write a critical essay applying the concept points covered in any module (or modules) of the course. The thesis or point of each student essay will be to evaluate alternative propositions for economic choice by one or more individuals, firms, organizations, or governments applying one or more of the economic theories provided in the course. Students should use and cite at least four published sources to support their positions and analyses in addition to citing at least one discussion of economic theory in the Carbaugh textbook.
