5. His keys to success
Professional life
Ambition
Since the beginning of his carreer, M. Hétier
has always been looking for the best
positions of responsibility. He does not
avoid responsibilities and that made him reach
the seat he now fills in.
Taking opportunities
when they come
M. Hétier is one of the best examples of
success that I have met. When he got out of
his business school, he started working as
Head of Sector. Then, he was smart enough to
grab the opportunities when they came
and he climbed the ladder progressively. He
made the good choices at the good
moments and that is the secret of his success.
Optimism and self-confidence
M. Hétier works on the assumption that one can do
everything if he really wants to and stays
optimistic on the realization. He really believes
that everything is possible.
He appreciates
working with slogans to get ideas across. The
slogans he uses the more are:
“Always aim at the moon because even if you miss
it, you will reach the stars.”
“ Think great and you will succeed in a great way.”
“ Success is a decision”
“They did not know it was impossible, that is why
they did it.”
6. His keys to success
Professional life
Timetable organization
In order to be able to live both his professional
and personal life, M. Hétier has a really strict
schedule. Some of his time is reserved for his sport
training. He manages to get back home not too late to
see his children and wife. In fact, he adapts his
schedule to be able to keep living his personal life.
Moreover, he does not lose time into doing useless
work. He is efficient in his tasks and benefits from the
collaboration with his team workers.
Leadership style : reliability and decentralization
M. Hétier has chosen to use a management
method based on reliability, that is to say that he
relies entirely on his teams and he considers that he
does not have to control them all the time. They work
on an autonomy base. Therefore they feel more
responsible for their work and they work even
better.
“Servant leader” managing method
As every manager, M. Hétier had to
choose a type of management to
supervise his teams. I completely share
his views on managing people. Indeed, he
chose to use the “servant leader”
managing method. He does not
manage his teams by controlling all the
time what they do. He just gives them the
objectives and they find what they have to
do and how to do it. He does not consider
himself as a tyrant but as an assistant
for them to succeed; not as a censor but
as a support.
He believes that managing people
is a question of contact. He is not
distant with his team workers and really
tries to be there for them.

Leadership style :
reliability and decentralization
M. Hétier is a passionate of running. He
dedicates a lot of time to his training and has
already run many races. His dedication to
running shows that he is relentless. Here is
a transcript of his last races:
-
Saintélyon race (75km by night)
6000D (65Kms)
2 times the 100 km of Millau
20 half-marathon (21,1 km)
7 Paris Marathon (42 km)
Chicago/ New York/ London Marathon
His family
M. Hétier also dedicates much time to his
family. He has managed to find a compromise
between his time-taking job and his family.
9. Convergences…
Ambition
As M. Hétier, I am ambitious and I
always try to surpass myself in everything I do.
When I was in « classes preparatoires », I kept
working really hard and gave the best of myself
even if I had the feeling that I was facing a big wall.
At the end, my tenacity was rewarded. Even if
sometimes, it can be ungrateful because I am trying
to reach too high objectives, I believe that ambition
is a necessary skill to reach management seats and
M. Hétier is a really good example for me.
Timetable organization
When I work, I always try to be well
organized in the tasks I have to do. I am
used to doing daily schedules which help me
organize my day.
Reliability on the
teams
I actually work in a subsidiary of Vinci
Energies as Account Manager in Architectural
Lighting. I manage projects and part of my job
consists in supervising the construction site so
that everyday, I have to tell the electricians who
work on site what they have to do. Even if I
control their work regularly, I do not feel the
need to watch every step of their work. I rely on
them considering that they have enough
experience to work well.
10. …and divergences
Behaviour in front of an inquiry from
a team worker
Our behaviours differ on the way
we
answer
someone’s
question.
Indeed, as I am still young, if someone
comes to see me at work to ask me how I
would do something, I will give my own
point of view. However, M. Hétier has a
different way to see things. If someone
comes to question him, he will not answer
the question but ask other questions to
help the person think about it and find his
own solution.
Way to communicate
When he has to get a message across
through a power-point, M. Hétier often uses
photos or images. Thus, he lets his team
workers understand by themselves what he
wants. On the contrary, I will be much more
explicit. With the little experience I have, I prefer
using real words to deliver messages.
Timetable organization
M. Hétier is really structured in his
work. He is able to freeze some slots for his
personal activities even if it is in the middle of
his day.
On the contrary, I find it difficult to manage my
professional time in order to have some free
time. The time dedicated to my professional life
often overrides my spare time. In the future, I
will need to better compromise between
professional and personal life.
