Generic Rifampicin or Rifampin (R-Cin Capsules) is
used in the treatment of all forms of tuberculosis.
Rifampin is used for the treatment of
asymptomatic carriers of Neisseria meningitidis to
eliminate meningococci from the nasopharynx.

Rifampicin or Rifampin Capsules – Brand Names
Rifampicin or Rifampin Capsules are
available as Rifadin, R-Cin,
Rimactane, Rimpacin, Cavidin,
Cavikid, Coxid-450, Gocox, Kemorifa,
Famcin, Montomycin, Macox,
Rifampila, Rimactane, Ticin and
Tricin.

Active Ingredient
The active ingredient contained in R-Cin
Capsules is Rifampicin (Rifampin).
Each R-Cin capsule for oral administration
contain 150 mg, 300 mg, 450 mg or 600 mg of
Rifampin per capsule.

The structure of Rifampicin, also called
Rifampin is given below:

Uses of R-Cin Capsules
R-Cin is a Rifamycin antibiotic used to
prevent and treat tuberculosis and other
infections.
This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections
and will not work for viral infections (e.g.,
common cold, flu).
Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic
can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Generic Rifampin Dosage
➢The daily dose of Rifadin (R-Cin capsules), must
preferably be taken at least 30 minutes before a meal or 2
hours after a meal to ensure rapid and complete
absorption.
➢Tuberculosis: Rifadin should be given with other effective
anti-tuberculosis drugs to prevent the possible emergence
of Rifampicin-resistant strains of Mycobacteria. The
recommended single daily Adult dose in tuberculosis is 8
to 12 mg/kg. Usual Daily dose: Patients weighing less than
50 kg - 450 mg. Patients weighing 50 kg or more – 600
mg. Children: In children, oral doses of 10 to 20 mg/kg
body weight daily are recommended, although a total daily
dose should not usually exceed 600 mg.
The dosage of R-Cin Capsules (Generic
Rifampin) is given below:

Generic Rifampicin Capsules Dosage
➢Leprosy: 600 mg doses of Rifampicin should be given once
per month. Alternatively, a daily regimen may be used. The
recommended single daily dose is 10 mg/kg. Usual daily dose:
Patients weighing less than 50 kg - 450 mg. Patients weighing
50 kg or more – 600 mg. In the treatment of leprosy, rifampicin
should always be used in conjunction with at least one other
antileprosy drug.
➢Brucellosis, Legionnaires Disease or serious staphylococcal
infections: Adults: The recommended daily dose is 600 mg to
1200 mg given in 2 to 4 divided doses, together with another
appropriate antibiotic to prevent the emergence of resistant
strains of the infecting organisms.
The dosage of Generic Rifampicin Capsules (R-
Cin) is given below:

R-Cin Capsules Dosage
➢Prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis: Adults: 600 mg
twice daily for 2 days. Children (1 - 12 years): 10 mg/kg twice
daily for 2 days. Children (3 months - 1 year): 5 mg/kg twice
daily for 2 days.
➢Prophylaxis of Haemophilus influenzae: Adults and children:
For members of households exposed to H. influenzae B
disease when the household contains a child 4 years of age or
younger, it is recommended that all members (including the
child) receive rifampicin 20 mg/kg once daily (maximum daily
dose 600 mg) for 4 days. Index cases should be treated prior
to discharge from hospital. Neonates (1 month): 10 mg/kg daily
for 4 days.

Storage Instructions
Generic Rifampicin (R-Cin Capsules)
have to be stored at controlled room
temperature i.e. 25°C (77°F) with
excursions permitted between 15° to
30°C (59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines
away from children and pets. Keep
tightly closed. Store in a dry place. Avoid
excessive heat.

Generic Rifampin Warnings
Rifampin has been shown to produce liver
dysfunction. Fatalities associated with jaundice
have occurred in patients with liver disease and
in patients taking Rifampin with other
hepatotoxic agents. Patients with impaired liver
function should be given Rifampin only in cases
of necessity and then with caution and under
strict medical supervision.
In some cases, hyperbilirubinemia resulting from
competition between Rifampin and Bilirubin for
excretory pathways of the liver at the cell level
can occur in the early days of treatment.

Generic Rifampin Warnings
Rifampin has enzyme-inducing properties,
including induction of delta amino levulinic acid
synthetase. Isolated reports have associated
porphyria exacerbation with Rifampin
administration.
The possibility of rapid emergence of resistant
meningococci restricts the use of Generic
Rifampicin Capsules (R-Cin) to short-term
treatment of the asymptomatic carrier state.

R-Cin Capsules
Contraindications
R-Cin Capsules are contraindicated in
patients with a hypersensitivity to Rifampicin
(Rifampin) or who have a history of
previous sensitivity to any of the Rifamycins
or any other component of this medication.
Jaundice associated with reduced Bilirubin
excretion.
Premature and newborn infants in whom the
liver is not yet capable of functioning with full
efficiency.

R-Cin Capsules
Contraindications
R-Cin (Rifampin) passes into the
breast milk and therefore should not
be used during lactation.
Generic Rifampicin Capsules (R-Cin)
use is contraindicated when given
concurrently with the combination of
Saquinavir / Ritonavir

Generic Rifampicin Capsules Side Effects
➢Gastrointestinal: Heartburn, epigastric distress, anorexia,
nausea, vomiting, jaundice, flatulence, cramps, and diarrhea have
been noted in some patients.
➢ Hepatic:Transient abnormalities in liver function tests (e.g.,
elevations in serum bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, serum
transaminases) have been observed. Rarely, hepatitis or a shock-
like syndrome with hepatic involvement and abnormal liver
function tests has been reported.
➢Hematologic: Thrombocytopenia has occurred primarily with
high dose intermittent therapy, but has also been noted after
resumption of interrupted treatment. It rarely occurs during well
supervised daily therapy. This effect is reversible if the medicine
is stopped as soon as purpura occurs. Cerebral hemorrhage and
fatalities have been reported when Generic Rifampicin Capsules
(R-Cin) administration has been continued or resumed after the
appearance of purpura.
➢Rare reports of disseminated intravascular coagulation have
been observed.

➢Leukopenia, hemolytic anemia, and decreased hemoglobin have
been observed.
➢Agranulocytosis has been reported very rarely.
➢Central Nervous System: Headache, fever, drowsiness, fatigue,
ataxia, dizziness, inability to concentrate, mental confusion,
behavioral changes, muscular weakness, pains in extremities, and
generalized numbness have been observed.
➢Psychoses have been rarely reported.
➢Rare reports of myopathy have also been observed.
➢Ocular: Visual disturbances have been observed.
➢Endocrine: Menstrual disturbances have been observed. Rare
reports of adrenal insufficiency in patients with compromised
adrenal function have been observed.
➢Renal: Elevations in BUN and serum uric acid have been
reported. Rarely, hemolysis, hemoglobinuria, hematuria, interstitial
nephritis, acute tubular necrosis, renal insufficiency, and acute
renal failure have been noted. They are reversible when generic
Rifampin capsules are discontinued and appropriate therapy
instituted.

➢Dermatologic: Cutaneous reactions are mild and self-limiting and
do not appear to be hypersensitivity reactions.
➢Hypersensitivity Reactions: Occasionally, pruritis, urticaria, rash,
pemphigoid reaction, erythema multiforme including Stevens-
Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, vasculitis,
eosinophilia, sore mouth, sore tongue, and conjunctivitis have been
observed.
➢Anaphylaxis has been reported rarely.
➢Miscellaneous: Edema of the face and extremities have been
reported.
➢Other reactions which have occurred with intermittent dosage
regimens include “flu syndrome” (such as episodes of fever, chills,
headache, dizziness, and bone pain), shortness of breath,
wheezing, decrease in blood pressure and shock.
➢The “flu syndrome” can also appear if Rifampin capsules (R-Cin)
are taken irregularly by the patient or if daily administration is
resumed after a drug free interval.

Generic Rifampin Overdose
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, pruritus, headache,
and increasing lethargy will probably occur within a short
time after ingestionof R-Cin capsules and
unconsciousness could occur when there is severe
hepatic disease.
Transient increases in liver enzymes and/or bilirubin
may occur. Brownish-red or orange discoloration of the
skin, urine, sweat, saliva, tears, and feces will occur, and
its intensity is proportional to the amount administered.
Liver enlargement, possibly with tenderness, can
develop within a few hours after severe overdosage;
Bilirubin levels may increase and jaundice may develop
rapidly. Hepatic involvement may be more marked in
patients with prior impairment of hepatic function.

R-Cin Capsules Overdose
Intensive support measures should be instituted and individual
symptoms treated as soon as they arise. The airway must be
secured and adequate respiratory exchange established. Since
nausea and vomiting are likely to be present, gastric lavage
within the first 2 to 3 hours after ingestion is probably preferable
to induction of emesis.
Following evacuation of the gastric contents, the instillation of
activated charcoal slurry into the stomach may help absorb any
remaining drug from the gastrointestinal tract.
Antiemetic medication may be necessary to control severe
nausea and vomiting.
Active diuresis (with measured intake and output) will help
promote excretion of the medicine.
For severe cases, extracorporeal hemodialysis may be
required. If this is not available, peritoneal dialysis can be used
along with forced diuresis.

Rifampin During Pregnancy
Rifampin (R-Cin Capsules) has been classified by
the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C.
Although Rifampin has been reported to cross the
placental barrier and appear in the cord blood, the
effect of combinations of Rifampin capsules (R-Cin)
with other anti-tuberculous drugs on the human fetus
is not known.
Generic Rifampicin Capsules (R-Cin) should not be
used in pregnant women or women with childbearing
potential.
If Rifampicin Capsules (R-Cin) therapy is judged to
be essential, such treatment should be implemented
only after carefully weighing the potential benefits of
therapy against the risks which may be involved.
