2. Analyze
• I will be teaching this lesson to a 6th grade classroom. There will be 12 girls
and 12 boys. Two of the boys will be African American and two girls will be
as well. The rest will be white.
• Students should already have basic knowledge about civil rights.
• There are a variety of different learners in the class so the lesson will cover
all ways of learning.
3. Objective
• Students will be able to explain the importance of the Negro Leagues and
the breaking of the color barrier. This will be accomplished by having
students complete a group project that they must present to the class. The
project will consist of classwork,artwork, videos, pictures, and audio clips. It
will be presented to the class by the group. This will be accomplished in a
week with 100% accuracy.
4. Day by Day
• Day 1- Ask the students what they know about civil rights and segregation. Then
ask if any of the students know about the Negro League.
• Day 2- Start class with a video tribute to the Negro Leagues, then after ask students
to write a one paragraph response on how the Negro Leagues have affected the
baseball of today.
• Day 3- Take students to computer lab and assign each group of 3 one influential
person to research.
• Day 4- Watch the movie 42
• Day 5- Have each group present their presentation.
5. Technology
• All videos and movies will be watched on the smartboard in the front of the
room. The students will also spend a day in the computer lab with their
group members researching information for the project.
