In the early 1920s, after facing the struggles of World War I, the Palmer Raids, and Wilson's fall, Americans craved stability. Republicans were
promising a return to the settled country we once were, and this eventually led to the election of Warren G. Harding, the first Republican president in
the decade. One of his first acts as president was allowing people to walk on the White House garden, reassuring the citizens that their government was
returning to them after a time of hardship. During his campaign, Harding called for "normalcy", a consistent period of peace and quiet, something that
appealed to Americans after the time of relentless strain. Despite the scandals, President Harding was successful during his term, as he delivered to the
public what he had promised, "a return to normalcy" and revival, by lowing income tax for the rich, passing many tariffs, and initiating the Washington
Naval Conference.
Harding listened to the demands of the rich citizens, in terms of taxes. In 1921, he created the Bureau of the Budget, which provided the government
with an accounting of its income, and it eventually helped in assessing past performances and in planning future government programs. This Bureau

After the end of World War 1, the US economy entered into a new period in which progressive refunds of the 1910's ended. Until Warren G Harding's
appointment in 1920 as president, the economy experienced an economic boom. Inadequate attention to the unions and social problems led to regulated
business. The year of 1910 was a period of trust–busting and 1920 concluded it which went back to the time of non–government intervention.

to organize an evacuation of over 100,000 Americans trapped in Europe. Hoover and many of his wealthy friends came together and created the
Committee for the Relief of Belgium, after Germany's brutal invasion of Belgium. Hoover successful pulled this off without any government help; he
was able to gain several millions of dollars to supply Belgians with much–needed medicine and food. Hoover ran the U.S. Food Administration at the
request of President Woodrow Wilson. Hoover did quite well as the head of the U.S. Food Administration in leading the effort to preserve food and

Rather than facing his opponent, James Cox, Harding campaigned against Wilson. Aforementioned, Wilson was paralyzed, therefore Harding was
only running against the idea of Wilson or what he had previously stood for. He promised America change, but not a progressive change that Wilson

The election of 1932 focused primarily on the Great Depression, the recent economic crisis that had swallowed the nation. At this time, thirteen
million people were unemployed and 774 banks were shutting down annually. Economically unstable, Americans turned to Franklin Delano
Roosevelt who claimed, "better days were ahead" with his New Deal reformation. He promised economic "recovery, job creation, investment in
public works, and civic uplift" (Harvey 88). Immediately upon entering the white house, he began his 3 R process: relief, recovery, and reform
(Bateman and Taylor 73). While this revolution would bring reform to U.S banking systems and help improve unemployment, the restoring of

Most people probably do not think about how much of their lives depend on oil. This profitable commodity is constantly being used around the
world, twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. From the scented creams people use on their bodies, to the airline jets soaring above, oils are
being used. Oil is one of three major forms of fossil fuels, coal and natural gas being the rest. Fossil fuels began forming millions of years ago in the
Carboniferous Period when trees, plants, and small organisms died (DOE, 2015). Eventually the fossils sank to the bottom of many swamps and
oceans forming layers of peat (a brown, soil–like, and spongy material). Over thousands of years, peat was covered by clay, sand, and other minerals
which turned into a type of rock called sedimentary. Over thousands of years rocks piled on top of the peat creating more pressure. Eventually the
pressure managed to squeeze water out of the peat and over millions of years, this mineral rich water turned into the three major fossil fuels that people
know and use today (DOE, 2015). Regardless of its proficiency and success, the oil industry has become one of the most unethical businesses in the

W.T.B Williams of the Tuskegee Institute sought more black involvement in U.S.
–Haitian relations. Moton served as Booker T. Washington's successor
at the Tuskegee Institute. He felt a duty to continue Washington's vision of industrial education for blacks and sought to extend the Tuskegee model
into Haiti. He urged President Harding to include blacks on his "investigation body" declaring he could "suggest colored men who would in no way
embarrass the administration." Moton fell short; Harding did not appoint a black American to the body. However, Moton left an indelible mark on
Washington.
The Department of State invited Moton to an "independent trip to Haiti", but he could not attend; Williams replaced him. In a confidential letter,
Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes discussed the prospect of Williams' trip with General Russell, Hughes remarked that Williams needed the
approval of President Borno to determine whether he would be an "acceptable" replacement for Moton, worthy of the Haitian government. Hughes
continued and claimed "Haitians prefer a white man to a Negro for work in Haiti as the former has more influence and authority." His confidential

treaty. By holding off the vote and making his own changes to the treaty, Lodge knew that he was using Wilson's hatred to his advantage. Wilson
would have accepted the changes if they had been proposed by one of his fellow Democrats, but the fact that they had been written by Lodge made
Wilson see red. He immediately ordered Democrats to vote entirely against the treaty with the added Lodge votes. The only possible path to
ratification would be to accept the treaty with the new changes. Wilson chose to block the passing of the treaty by persuading Democrats to vote
against it. Unfortunately, Wilson had a stroke, and his last efforts in getting the vote to go his way

The "Roaring Twenties" were a turbulent time in American history. The United States had just returned from the carnage of World War I and was ready
to revolutionize their ideas, morals, and most importantly, their presidents. The presidential election of 1920 was a particularly integral election due to
the introduction of the right of women to vote and America's social & political unrest. Warren G.Harding, a Republican, defeated Democrat James M.
Cox, on a platform that urged Americans to "return to normalcy". Normalcy was a play on words of normality by Harding, which meant to conform to
the norm. But the question that stood on many historians was: Why did Americans actually vote to "return to normalcy"? The simple answer was that...
Each of these things worked because the American voting public wanted a less politically complicated government. The public wanted to return the
"good old days" where war, crimes, and international affairs were the least of the country's problems. Clearly, the American public wanted an easy
going president who supported what they felt was right for the country, a break from heavy politics (post–war policies/treaties, idealism vs. capitalism,
etc.). Additionally, Americans were anxious to forget about WWI and go back to an age of innocence. Americans sought to achieve that by keeping
the world at bay and focused their energy internally. Americans wanted to stay neutral and rejected president Wilson's idea for a League of Nations
(Clements 168). Americans also wanted a pro–business environment where the slogan was: В‘Big bucks for big businesses' (Scholastic). The public
desired for industrialization at a national level so that they could be less dependent on imports and earn more money by exporting. And moreover, the
Republican Party candidate Harding promised a new start by isolation from European political struggles, or simply put: a return to the old ways. With
that, Harding won with an overwhelming majority. The public voiced their need for slow seclusion from the world and it was supported by Harding,

While Prohibition did lessen the amount of alcohol Americans had access to, it was not successful in completely eliminating all liquor. Prohibition's
influence on American society was contrary to the original purpose. Many people wanted alcohol and they were willing to risk breaking the law.
Organizations called speakeasies were run by bootleggers who served alcohol illegally, thus increasing crime rates. This contradicted the original
purpose of the Prohibition Act. Specifically, Alphonse Capone did everything the Eighteenth Amendment had prohibited, by controlling the alcohol
black–market. The Eighteenth Amendment was an essential part of American history because it heightened crime rates as mobsters distributed illegal

Harding was born on November 2, 1865, in Corsica (now Bloomington Grove), Ohio. He was eldest of eight children. His father, George Tryon
Harding, was a farmer and a doctor. His mother, Phoebe Dickerson Harding, was a "gentle, pious" woman who devoted herself to her children.
As a boy Warren helped his fater on the farm. In the summer he worked in a sawmill that made brooms, and he drove a team of horses for the

America in the 1920's was called the new era. It is called a new era because it became a turning point in American society, and marked a separation
from the 19th century and the 20th century. We soon begin to develop our own social norms, music, and culture as we evolve into a modern nation.

One well known incident is referred to as the "Teapot Dome Scandal", when Albert B. Fall and Edwin C. Denby were secretly receiving bribes to
allow leasing in Teapot Dome to oil companies. The oil they were leasing was restricted Naval Oil Reserves in Wyoming. Denby was cleared of all
charges while one of his leasers, Sinclair spent six and a half years in prison. Another infamous display of impropriety was when Charles Forbes,
